My grandma used to crochet and quilt regularly. She once tried to teach me to crochet when I was 10 or so, but I just couldn't catch on. Years later, when I was 17, my sister finally got through to me and I managed to learn on the same day that she announced she was pregnant with her third baby. Delighted, I went home and began a baby blanket for her, staying up all night to get it done. The next morning I gifted it to her and she was FLABBERGASTED. LOL, it was such a fun surprise.
Grandma taught me the basic stitches and I taught myself to read patterns and after watching these videos, I am realizing there are multiple things I have been counting or doing wrong. 😂 Wishing I had these videos back when I was making I was making baby blankets for my children.
I did a V stitch blanket this very same way and by beginner's luck or maybe I'm just blessed cuz somebody up there likes me , I used a fudgy brown color and a cafe-au-lait color and a variegated yarn that had both of those colors plus a lovely turquoise with some in-between beigy color in it. As I altered from fudgy to Cafe Au Lait back to fudgy and then the variegated w/ turquoise, and then reverse the order again, it ended up that the variegated yarn stitches in between the two fudge colored strips looked as though I had done some sort of fancy Magic Stitchery! It was just the way the colors fell as I made my stitches, it was as though I had done some sort of fancy zig-zag stitch which the v-stitch is, sort of, depending on how you look at it on each row, but that's not it, folks kept telling me it look like some sort of Indian woven blanket or something. . . It was amazing! Very striking color combination. P.S. after I realized this was happening after I had said it down a couple of times to have a break or go to work and I laid it out one time to check all of my stitches for sure because I had forgotten to do that and had to rip too much out at one time, I did end up pulling some out so that I could gauge my stitches a little bit better and in some places because of the short length of one of the colors in the variegated yarn I had to pull my stitches tighter or even change down or up a hook size to make sure of placement for the ebb and flow to continue to work as well as it had luckily so far and now I think I learned that that is called color-pooling am I right? I'm self-taught I don't know.
@@dilemmix , right ! I saw in duplicated a V stitch that started out this way with a simple chain and then when you turn and go back on the chain you just make V stitches. Ty and not in the end and cut at the same length as your beginning was and it will look okay with the single strings or you can add tassels. To cover the end strings. Can't tell you how many compliments I got that the tassels were not flopping in somebody's face when they borrowed an afghan!
Thanks so much! I primarily knit kids sweaters that I donate to a charity, but that leads to lots of leftovers that I usually crochet into scarves to donate. I like to crochet scarves better as no blocking and I am all for no lengthy finishing work! That is a nice stitch to use for scarves of many colors, so I will definitely use it next time I go to my basket of leftover bits! One grandma taught me to knit and the other to crochet about 60 years ago- the gift that keeps on giving! I was not very interested at the time, but I really appreciate it now!

@@SecretYarnery I was going to ask if it could be done without the tassels. I will be making for a cancer patient and I don't think they will want tassels to wrap up in the car and go to chemo but I know they will appreciate a nice warm blanket. I went through chemo also and that was my main requirement.
I am a beginner and this seems so easy! I self taught to crochet and knit years ago to keep my hands busy so I can stop smoking 🚬 🚭 😌. I never learned how to make anything really, just put a lot of chains ⛓️ together then tossed it in the trash 🗑. Thanks to UA-cam I am learning more. Have u met up with T L Crafts (TLC), maybe it's T&L Crafts? Love her! Have you ever checked out any video titles for crochet or knitting (some these non-english speakers call crochet "knitting" I suppose by the dictionary definition of knitting together or being knit together, it pretty much means the same thing if something is tied together/strung together or otherwise heals together again, it is by definition knit2gether - see whut i did there? )l have weird words or scribbly writing or even Russian these ladies are phenomenal their skills are unmatched by any American videos I have ever seen and they take the time to show everything very carefully. You may not understand a word that they are saying but you can tell that they are warning you about something that you need to watch out for but regardless of not understanding the language they pointed out to you either with the hook or a darning-needle or a close-up or pointed out with their finger... and you can always go to the three dots up in the corner of your screen or settings it wherever they are on your laptop if that's what you're looking on, and you can change your playback speed to slow it down as much as you need to so that you will not have to keep rewinding. I have even begun to learn a little bit about counting in Turkish,I already know how to count in Spanish and Italian is close enough, Portuguese is not too far,and the Malaysian ladies and oh my goodness the ones south-of-the-border and on into South America from the United States OMG the mosaics and some of the complex things they do are really not so complex after all! Some of these Turkish ladies videos that I have found eventually encouraged me to literally knit with two needles some very extremely easy things they look so complicated but they go so fast I was a novice who knew nothing more than to cast on one way... but now I know that there are probably about three or four ways to cast on, six ways to knit and im very interested in speed knitting and lever knitting which I have not seen done but I did learn that it exists and I'm going to look that up. I have also learned that Tunisian knitting goes faster than all of them and is thicker and still uses less yarn then regular crochet. That was from an article I found on which yarn art uses the least that I found on the internet. Happy hooking!

Hi there! I agree, finding someone teaching who take their time to not only explain thing's clearly but to actually show us 'exactly" where to put the next stitch! I know when I first started crocheting again I had trouble recognizing which was the next stitch, it tripped me up a lot and I did a lot of frogging and it was extremely aggravating. And I almost just stuck with knitting and that would have been a tragedy bc I've gotten quite good thanks to these awesome teacher like Christa!

Thank you for this pattern. I recalled learning it many, many years ago, but couldn't remember how to start or finish. I was cleaning my craft room and used all my left-overs of baby yarn to make the cutest scrap afghan for a sweet friend who's having a baby boy. She adored it.
The way you work your tails in with the tassels is the best idea/hack that I’ve seen in a long time! There’s so many stitches where this would be a great time saver. In fact I’m working on a stitch sampler blanket where some of the stitches I’m using you change colors every row and I was dreading having to weave in all those tails but now I don’t have to so thank you so much for this tip! I decided on this pattern to use up the yarn I had left over from other projects, but I liked it so much, and so did my husband, that I bought more yarn and kept going! I just finished today and I love it. It's 53" x 77 1/2" and lovely and heavy and warm. All I have to do now is decide whether to keep the ends on and make more tassels, or to cover them with a border!
As I make blankets for charity. I probably would not change colours every row. Or create a fringe asits for local shelters. However the concept is great for using random colours and create a dense non-holy warm blanket. Thank you. Your instructions are very clear and concise. Also glad to hear other people have dogs that’s bark cuz mine can sense a rabbit in the yard from a distance. And barks accordingly. Although I do like the idea of the strands at colour changes.

I took a 'vacation' from needlework to raise my babies (also being Very Careful to spend only on the necessities, nothing extra for yarn), but I've been back in the last 16 years. Lots of friends are either stopping or starting, so I get extra needles and hooks and all varieties of yarns and cords, and sometimes I can give away and sometimes receive. Right now my yarn bags are 'sort of' sorted by what I want to work myself, and what I want to bless others with..... Lots of flubs - increasing too much, decreasing too much, having too tight of tension, a hat turning into a pencil case. a rug turning into a giant rolling ocean totally out of control! ..... Lots of Flubs! Lots of tearing out and starting back where I first went 'off track." But I was teaching myself, and in 4th grade I was on $1 a month budget. And back then there was no internet. You can imagine how much I envied y daughter-in-law, when I found out she could just watch somebody do it, and she could copy! So Now I do that too! Christa has become one of my best friends, and a comforting voice when everything around me is going crazy.

Thank you so much, I just finished this blanket and it turned out beautiful! When doing the tassels I took a little shortcut by pulling the 2 tails through the loop together with all the other strings. I did the colours to match my sofa, and now I want to make matching cushion covers!
I love this pattern. I haven't croqueted anything in years because of arthritis but my sister is about to have a baby! Its the first grandchild my parents are going to have. My sister grew up having a croqueted security blanket and thought it would be great if her son could have one made with love. This pattern is ideal, it looks great but also not too intricate that my hands are able to handle it. It also lends itself to taking breaks at the end of a row very easily with out having to use a stitch marker. Thanks so much!

If just using 3 colours you can change colour every row and also take your yarn with you up the side...then hide with a nice border...no ends to worry about...I have started one with fawn grey and red and it looks fabulous...the colours I mean 🤣🤣🤣
Beautiful Pattern Krista! However, I was taught that is the Long DC or spike stitch your doing not the Extended DC1EDC. An EDC has an extra yarn over in the same stitch.

I enjoy listening to the classics as I crochet, things like Little Women and Pride and Prejudice since it's not possible to hold a book and hook at the same time. Very easy directions. I am going to make a series of red/white/blue afghans for my nieces and nefews this next year. Just want to say, that when I add a new color, I take the two ends and make half of a square knot before I continue crocheting. That way they are less likely to pop out of place before I can weave them in. Thanks for the video.

Thanks so much! I primarily knit kids sweaters that I donate to a charity, but that leads to lots of leftovers that I usually crochet into scarves to donate. I like to crochet scarves better as no blocking and I am all for no lengthy finishing work! That is a nice stitch to use for scarves of many colors, so I will definitely use it next time I go to my basket of leftover bits!
One grandma taught me to knit and the other to crochet about 60 years ago- the gift that keeps on giving! I was not very interested at the time, but I really appreciate it now!

I will be making for a cancer patient and I don't think they will want tassels to wrap up in the car and go to chemo but I know they will appreciate a nice warm blanket. I went through chemo also and that was my main requirement.

I am a beginner and this seems so easy! I self taught to crochet and knit years ago to keep my hands busy so I can stop smoking 🚬 🚭 😌. I never learned how to make anything really, just put a lot of chains ⛓️ together then tossed it in the trash 🗑. Thanks to UA-cam I am learning more. Have u met up with T L Crafts (TLC), maybe it's T&L Crafts? Love her! Have you ever checked out any video titles for crochet or knitting (some these non-english speakers call crochet "knitting"
I suppose by the dictionary definition of knitting together or being knit together, it pretty much means the same thing if something is tied together/strung together or otherwise heals together again, it is by definition knit2gether - see whut i did there? )l have weird words or scribbly writing or even Russian these ladies are phenomenal their skills are unmatched by any American videos I have ever seen and they take the time to show everything very carefully.
You may not understand a word that they are saying but you can tell that they are warning you about something that you need to watch out for but regardless of not understanding the language they pointed out to you either with the hook or a darning-needle or a close-up or pointed out with their finger... and you can always go to the three dots up in the corner of your screen or settings it wherever they are on your laptop if that's what you're looking on, and you can change your playback speed to slow it down as much as you need to so that you will not have to keep rewinding.
I have even begun to learn a little bit about counting in Turkish,I already know how to count in Spanish and Italian is close enough, Portuguese is not too far,and the Malaysian ladies and oh my goodness the ones south-of-the-border and on into South America from the United States OMG the mosaics and some of the complex things they do are really not so complex after all!
Some of these Turkish ladies videos that I have found eventually encouraged me to literally knit with two needles some very extremely easy things they look so complicated but they go so fast I was a novice who knew nothing more than to cast on one way... but now I know that there are probably about three or four ways to cast on, six ways to knit and im very interested in speed knitting and lever knitting which I have not seen done but I did learn that it exists and I'm going to look that up.
I have also learned that Tunisian knitting goes faster than all of them and is thicker and still uses less yarn then regular crochet. That was from an article I found on which yarn art uses the least that I found on the internet. Happy hooking!

I know when I first started crocheting again I had trouble recognizing which was the next stitch, it tripped me up a lot and I did a lot of frogging and it was extremely aggravating. And I almost just stuck with knitting and that would have been a tragedy bc I've gotten quite good thanks to these awesome teacher like Christa!

The way you work your tails in with the tassels is the best idea/hack that I’ve seen in a long time! There’s so many stitches where this would be a great time saver. In fact I’m working on a stitch sampler blanket where some of the stitches I’m using you change colors every row and I was dreading having to weave in all those tails but now I don’t have to so thank you so much for this tip! I decided on this pattern to use up the yarn I had left over from other projects, but I liked it so much, and so did my husband, that I bought more yarn and kept going! I just finished today and I love it. It's 53" x 77 1/2" and lovely and heavy and warm. All I have to do now is decide whether to keep the ends on and make more tassels, or to cover them with a border!

As I make blankets for charity. I probably would not change colours every row. Or create a fringe asits for local shelters. However the concept is great for using random colours and create a dense non-holy warm blanket. Thank you. Your instructions are very clear and concise. Also glad to hear other people have dogs that’s bark cuz mine can sense a rabbit in the yard from a distance. And barks accordingly. Although I do like the idea of the strands at colour changes.

I took a 'vacation' from needlework to raise my babies (also being Very Careful to spend only on the necessities, nothing extra for yarn), but I've been back in the last 16 years. Lots of friends are either stopping or starting, so I get extra needles and hooks and all varieties of yarns and cords, and sometimes I can give away and sometimes receive. Right now my yarn bags are 'sort of' sorted by what I want to work myself, and what I want to bless others with.....
Lots of flubs - increasing too much, decreasing too much, having too tight of tension, a hat turning into a pencil case. a rug turning into a giant rolling ocean totally out of control! ..... Lots of Flubs! Lots of tearing out and starting back where I first went 'off track." But I was teaching myself, and in 4th grade I was on $1 a month budget. And back then there was no internet. You can imagine how much I envied y daughter-in-law, when I found out she could just watch somebody do it, and she could copy! So Now I do that too! Christa has become one of my best friends, and a comforting voice when everything around me is going crazy.

I love this pattern. I haven't croqueted anything in years because of arthritis but my sister is about to have a baby! Its the first grandchild my parents are going to have. My sister grew up having a croqueted security blanket and thought it would be great if her son could have one made with love. This pattern is ideal, it looks great but also not too intricate that my hands are able to handle it. It also lends itself to taking breaks at the end of a row very easily with out having to use a stitch marker. Thanks so much!

If just using 3 colours you can change colour every row and also take your yarn with you up the side...then hide with a nice border...no ends to worry about...I have started one with fawn grey and red and it looks fabulous...the colours I mean 🤣🤣🤣

Beautiful Pattern Krista! However, I was taught that is the Long DC or spike stitch your doing not the Extended DC1EDC. An EDC has an extra yarn over in the same stitch.

Oh, my. I love old books and have several...even my first grade reader with Dick and Jane! I enjoy listening to the classics as I crochet, things like Little Women and Pride and Prejudice since it's not possible to hold a book and hook at the same time. Very easy directions. I am going to make a series of red/white/blue afghans for my nieces and nefews this next year. Just want to say, that when I add a new color, I take the two ends and make half of a square knot before I continue crocheting. That way they are less likely to pop out of place before I can weave them in. Thanks for the video.

I really appreciate your way of explaining how to do your projects. I have watched some that were very simple but descibed excruciatingly slow. Ive taught myself how to crochet from a book, and know the basic stitches, and use them to make blankets for Cancer patients. This pattern is bright, easy and fast. Right up my alley. Thank you.
