This movie is sooooo underrated. it has to be in my top 50 or 100 or near somewhere. The movie is clever for the 90s & people were still more realistic & down to earth than today's abstract meta awareness culture that the movie feeds off of. Breaking the 4th wall wasn't as common back then as today, I remember Burt Reynolds doing it a few times & some rare other movies but this is the next level meta aware. One of my favorite parts is when Jack meets Arnold and says "I don't like you, you've brought me nothing but pain.". That is some real shit. Imagine if Iron Man could speak to Robert Downey Jr. and his life like that.. No. This movie is dare I say perfect. I don't see a thing wrong with it structurally. It's a homage not only to itself & pop culture of the time but Houdini, Sherlock & Moriarty AND Jack the ripper as villains. Then an appearance from Death! and Danny says "Now?" Common! The one liners are perfect as intentionally cheesy. "Two days until retirement.". I could go all night off the top of my head one liners. "Practice! John Practice.".
I wonder if this movie failed because it made fun of the action genre, maybe people back then took those Schwarzenegger action movies a bit too seriously or something, just like some people take show wrestling seriously. I don't know. I think the movie is great and I have tons of respect for Arnold for being able to laugh at himself.
Man Arnold meeting a character he played was prob one of the most insane things I've ever seen. Esp knowing how confusing the whole exchange is cause both of them are real in their own way.
People weren’t ready at the time for this type of parody, especially self parody…I mean, parody movies were fun like hot shots, but having someone SELF parody was a new thing. I loved this movie.
Simple, like the movies that are done this days, a movie comes out, rarely gets very high reviews unless it’s a drama, people hate it and when many years go by they see a clip from that movie they criticized and say ‘they don’t make movies like that anymore’ people have convinced themselves that old is always better
Arnold said the movie would have done better if it wasn't released with Jurassic Park. He told executives to delay the release but they didn't listen. Everyone was so excited by Jurassic Park, they didn't even pay attention to this one.
Let me put it this way. This is a love/hate movie. As child you love it because you are living out your dream through Danny. As a late teen/young adult you look at it as a silly gimmicky kiddy flick. It takes a certain level of maturity to grasp and fully appreciate the humor and depth of this movie, and those who reach that level absolutely love it, or at the very least can appreciate its accomplishments. I went through those three stages myself. I must’ve watched this hundred times as a kid but then stayed years avoiding it. But when I came back to it, I had an entirely new outlook on it.

I dont care how corny this movie is its still one of the best of all time
“Arnold Braunschweiger is to Arnold Schwarzenegger” is as close as it’s gonna get to being equivalent to “Old Ben Kenobi is to Obi-Wan Kenobi”.
Doesn't schwarz mean black and doesn't negger also mean black¿
Oooh the enegger means from egg or ridge someone from black ridge

More like dumbfounded and frustrated for being stuck with this kid.
This movie might not have created Meta, but it's certainly the first big example of it.
