Cheverny in the Loire Valley: The chateau that inspired Tintin's castle

  • The château of Cheverny is the most homogeneous and best preserved chateau of the Loire Valley. It was built in 10 years and was never restructured. It also didn't suffer much damage during the French revolution and all the sculptures and furniture are original to the castle.
    The château of Cheverny also inspired cartoonist Hergé when designing the château de Moulinsart (Marlinspike Hall in English) where the adventures of Tintin take place.
    Another thing to see at the chateau of Cheverny is the feeding of the dogs. Cheverny is a hunting lodge and they have a pack of more than 100 hounds. The feeding of the hounds every morning is an incredible spectacle to watch.

    Another gorgeous video from the Loire Valley! I can’t believe that was built in only 10 years…I thought it would took so much longer, given how huge it is! The guard room looks cool…I love that stuff! Dinnertime for the dogs is hilarious! Thanks for sharing guys!

    You two have a great niche with chateaus - I love all of the history and information y'all give us. The meticulously decorated rooms really show off the beauty of this place. And the facades are breathtaking for French architecture. -c/t

    1:02 The ceiling has a sort of Himalayan thing going on. Not the painted motif so much but all those narrow beams. I've seen that in interior photos of Tibetan buildings, monastaries, I think.

      It is actually typical of the Renaissance era architecture all over Europe. Not sure who copied whom :).

    What was your favorite part of the castle? There is so much detail in every room they certainly don't make things like this anymore. Loved library I am a book nerd so I would be all over that!

    Wonder how they keep the tapestry clean and prevent it from degradation over hundreds of years.
    I expected to see a painting of Sir Francis Haddock on the wall BTW 😉

    We are doing a study on Cheverny and was wondering if you could place a value on Cheverny what would it be with ?

    • @JamesandLaurent
      @JamesandLaurent  4 роки тому +1

      Very hard question to answer. From a cash flow point of view, 350,000 visitors x 12 euros + ancillary revenue fro the restaurant and souvenir store, we would guess $7 million per year x 15 or 20 = $100 to $150 million. However, buying a chateau in France is like buying a 10-year old German car. All you are buying is lots of future maintenance. The chateau probably just breaks even. Cheverny also has a lot of paintings and antique furniture inside. Probably $50 million worth. But these are all wild guesses on our part. The unknown is whether a billionaire would be willing to pay a lot more than this, for the prestige, like they would be buying a football team.

    • @JamesandLaurent
      @JamesandLaurent  3 роки тому

      While we were there, we were wondering whether these dogs living in a pack were better of or worse off than Huskies living in a studio apartment in Arizona or Florida.

  • @MParix

    They have "hunt dogs" and make a show of them! Terrible.
    Such a shame to hunt!!!
    And dogs doesn't like to be used. Like all other Animals. Such a shame! Nothing to do with "nobility". Anyway no soul nobility
