Hey Kelsey! Great video, as always. I love hearing your thoughts on making money as an artist. Keep it up! (BTW. Just so you know, my sister just said that you are pretty😊 (she's 11))
You're so right about UA-cam/audience building advice (and most business style content too, tbh) being lacking when it comes to artists. I've watched tons and tons of it, and almost everything is about education OR pure entertainment. I don't want to be a teacher and do tutorials nor do I want to be a comedian and do weird challenges. Nor am I a weeb and do just fanart. Tell me how to make engaging studio vlogs, how to attract viewers with fine art. Idk if it's just the problem of content over art: a 100 hour painting twice a year doesn't really feed the beast.
I’ve struggled immensely with this same dilemma, and I have very recently come to a conclusion (I wouldn’t say it’s THE conclusion) that people consumer art BECAUSE it’s art. People will look/watch/read/listen to the thing because it is art. This sucks when you try to apply it to the content model. Because like you said, two 100hr paintings a year are not effective as “content”. And so learning how to walk that line is something I’m learning about. One thing I’ve been doing is finding artists online who make just art as their content and finding ways to be inspired by them. I’ve mostly found that those artists post WIP updates or they make tiny versions of their usual art. Also a good podcast that helps is the Creative Pep-talk Podcast.
Same for me, except that I do want to make illustrations and manga in my own style. But like you mentioned, I don't want to do fan art unless it's just for the fun of it and just show it to others on social media if I wanted to. Not intending to have any art at galleries either since it's usually frowned upon, they may take a huge chunk of the money, and I'm not too interested.
Luckily, i already have 10k followers on Facebook, so i can use that to my advantage. Im at the point where i can start focusing on creating the artwork/designs and start sharing. Hopefully i start selling soon. 🤞🤞
Thank you for this vid!! I'm having a LITTLE trouble brainstorming. I've been working on these designs on these creatures/entities that all sold out to collectors/supporters. A long term goal I have is creating a comic (manga-inspired) that can MAYBE eventually turn into an animated show in the future. I'm having trouble figuring out what problems people may currently have with this line of entertainment. Currently my designs were digitally sold, nothing physically made as of yet (I may be doing trading cards (not a game, just collectibles)). Any ideas of potential problems people may currently be facing that I can work to try solving? Thanks!
Amazing video!👍👏 I just began my comic book collection and found Toon Haven. They have an incredible range of digital comics for every genre, including the hard to find ones. Lifetime updates too!
Hey Kelsey! Awesome video, and thanks for the info. Was wondering if you could give some guidance on starting up selling digital downloads and prints as well please, I'd really appreciate that! Thanks in advance 🙏🏾
Valuable advice, thank you!! Im thinking about starting a template business as well using canva. Where do you think I should focus my efforts.....niche wise? Was thinking about creating templates for service based business, things they can use for their socials etc, but the amount of ideas and templates required is daunting. Any advice?
Hi! I don't know if you've discussed this in previous videos before but it's been something that I've always wondered about when it comes to selling commissions and digital goods online--did you ever have to apply for a sales tax permit for your state/other states? (this is a very US specific question sorry oof). I want to sell but I get paranoid about having all the proper measures to do so, and I've gotten mixed answers from Google, and looking through the Comptroller's site [for my state] just confuses me on their parameters. If this isn't a question you're able to answer because tax advice and stuff is tricky, that's totally cool; could I ask what resources helped you on that front, though? Thanks!
honestly, I'd just ask a tax professional in your area and have them guide you through it. Also, don't underestimate the power of a phone call. When I'm confused about this stuff I just try to get a hold of someone that works at the state department of commerce, or even a city level worker, and they're pretty helpful!
Unless you’re selling on a marketplace (example: Etsy, Amazon, etc.), you don’t have to worry about taxes. If you’re selling on your own with your own site, then you do have to register with the state. Every state is different, so yes, you’d have to speak to a CPA.
The thing is I don't really want to like teach people how to draw or make like make a tutorial for anything. I'd rather just sell Prints and things like that on Etsy or my own website. Maybe you could make your video and how you get started with Prints there seems to be so many options with them so many websites.
Thank you for this video, truly inspiting and transparent. I'm looking for an option to get there as well, I'm a developer, have some experinece in teaching others: did meetups at job Do you think it's a good to start doing some courses for this?
Really need to meet you. I quit my 9 to 5 job because that made me overwhelmed and less appreciated. From the beginning of my life I always wanted to draw and spend my time crafting this and that. Now, I think I need to choose this as my profession but I am afraid of losing everything. Don’t know what to do.
As a note, it may help to have it not be an all or nothing set up. Sit down, review your finances. How much do you need to make? Then look at work options that allow you to get that baseline amount, but also let you schedule in time for creative work and development. It takes time to build up the path you're taking if you want it to be full-time. Keep that in mind.
Tried selling Canva templates, notebooks with clever inspirational quotes, created a workbook which took me two months to do, tried selling website templates, small business templates. Book covers. I have sold zero products. Everything failed. Does not work.
The most important thing is for your products to be actually good enough that ppl want to buy them. And then you need to have ppl actually see the product, which could be followers (if you have any), seo, ads, etc
@@maureenp2248do you seriously think this person created products that she thought wasn’t good 😅enough? Thsts kind of insulting of you to say given she tried so very hard already
Im new to content creation and off the back you have great content with such a clear camera and the audio quality is great as well. I see that you have the equipment linked but what mic does you use or is that the camera?
First of all, thanks for the content. I have a question regarding digital products, do I need to register them so that I can sell online? For example, an ebook or a workbook?
kinda confused about what you mean but i didn’t register anything anywhere! you could file for copyright protections though if you wanted (maybe that’s what you mean?)
@@KelseyRodriguez Yes, that's what I meant 😆 I thought it was necessary to sorta 'register' for copyright protections. I have so many ideas for digital produtcs, thank you a lot for the answer!
You're automatically granted some copyright protections when you create a thing, but if you want additional protections you can go through here if you're in the US: www.copyright.gov. Generally I don't think this is necessary to start selling!
*Who is your product/services persona? *What this product/service actually solve? *What sets your product/service differentiat (competition)? 1.Products photos is the packaging of your selling 2.Product description (With for who your product) (Value) (Difference) 3.Delivery Mechanism
Is it okay to sell different products but your target buyers are different from my other products? I've been told by someone that I should perform and create a consistency over my products so I can create a name (Or should I say "Value")
I have a question, is there a possibility that someone will steal my account or even hack the PDF files that I sell, or is there a safe alternative other than PDF files?
I've tried advertising on social media, but I feel like a friend or family member is gonna have to be the 1st one to buy from my Etsy shop. Is that usually how it goes?
Design and Art are 2 diferent things. One is not better then the other, but are indeed diferent. Design is "artistic" because have artistic elements, however exist some major diferentiator factors bwtween the two. For exemple, when you have the intention of making something for a specific group of people, the question: "who is your product for" you are no longer doing art. Because art is something that you dont do for a specific group of people. Anyone can relate or apretiate or even have an expirience with, no metter the age. So thats never a consideration. And isnt made with the intention of solving a specific problem. Well, if you feel bad and that pice of art makes you feel better, in that sense is solving a problem but isnt a specific problem that you bring in the briefing. Art dosent even have a briefing but rather a concept. And is important to mention that and to make that diferentiation in the first place. But thks for the videos im gonna keep watching... i mean, sure
Kelsey.....plenty thanks. Great video. Very helpful. Thank you for giving to the community. One small suggestion, while I was watching the whole video, I was hoping if there was a real life example while you are explaining. Noted! I didn’t have a new product I was working on to show the process of in this video but I’ll consider making a spin off where I show that in more detail!
Hi! I 'm new to etsy and wanted to sell digital products. how do I make 3 separate package options for the same listing? I wanna make 3 choices for the same listing and they'd come in different prices, of course. I can see it on other sellers where they have a drop down for package options but I'm having a hard time finding that part on the set up section for pricing and inventory. can you help?

@@maureenp2248do you seriously think this person created products that she thought wasn’t good 😅enough? Thsts kind of insulting of you to say given she tried so very hard already
Thank you so much for this
😃😃
Im new to content creation and off the back you have great content with such a clear camera and the audio quality is great as well. I see that you have the equipment linked but what mic does you use or is that the camera?
The mic is the Elgato Wave 1 with a custom EQ in GarageBand!
you just convinced me on doing it
Great video!
@@KelseyRodriguez Yes, that's what I meant 😆
I thought it was necessary to sorta 'register' for copyright protections. I have so many ideas for digital produtcs, thank you a lot for the answer!
You're automatically granted some copyright protections when you create a thing, but if you want additional protections you can go through here if you're in the US: www.copyright.gov. Generally I don't think this is necessary to start selling!
@@KelseyRodriguez thank you once again for the information!
Much gratitude 🙏🏾
Pretty face to start my day ❤
& tnx for the video 👌

*Who is your product/services persona?
*What this product/service actually solve?
*What sets your product/service differentiat (competition)?
1.Products photos is the packaging of your selling
2.Product description
(With for who your product)
(Value)
(Difference)
3.Delivery Mechanism
If I am just starting out and have zero followers on any channels.. can u suggest a way of marketing a $ 10 product?
your lashes are so beautiful!
Is it okay to sell different products but your target buyers are different from my other products? I've been told by someone that I should perform and create a consistency over my products so I can create a name (Or should I say "Value")
Thanks Kelsey!
I thought I was subscribed to you already lol wish you had a podcast just talking bout this
that’s a good thought honestly 👀
Hello sister is krita good for making art wall prints and sell it ?
I low-key thought you were going to be sponsored by square space💀
I have a question, is there a possibility that someone will steal my account or even hack the PDF files that I sell, or is there a safe alternative other than PDF files?
I've tried advertising on social media, but I feel like a friend or family member is gonna have to be the 1st one to buy from my Etsy shop. Is that usually how it goes?
Thank you ☺️!
I love how she talks
i love the idea of selling your arts as digital product from etzy to fiver, but doesnt come easy as it is,
Ma'am which website is best for selling digital products
Great video. Thanks for the info.
Cz you are explaining meticulously the cycle, I was thinking how can is that applied to a product?
Over all great stuff. I cheer for you.
Salam!!
Noted! I didn’t have a new product I was working on to show the process of in this video but I’ll consider making a spin off where I show that in more detail!
what platform did you use to make your online store please
Squarespace!
my question is very important what platform or website you can use for sell our digital products no Etsy please ...... thank you
Create your own site?
Would you be willing to share where you get your mockups?!
Creative Market!
@@KelseyRodriguez thank you!
I don't use Etsy, there are lots of Etsy UA-cam tutorials out there though!
New here to your channel , awesome video… in the part where you talk about the outline you do for the workbook in adobe, the visual outline, can you tell us more about how to get that if we don’t have adobe ?
the process isn’t specific to adobe, you can make workbooks in any document or design software
