Hey Trogly, check out the video Ain't that peculiar live 1972 by the female group Fanny . Their guitarist June Millican is playing a double cut tv yellow LP Junior that happens to have a crown on the headstock. Maybe you could shed some light on that. I myself am guessing it's a replacement neck and Gibson just happened to use an SG Junior neck. Or did they make some intentionally like that?
I'm proud to know just how this axe could sound & play. That gold top profile pic is my non-weight-relief 2018 Gold Top Classic w/ P90's & Bigsby Vibramate. I underestimated P90's for years...MISTAKE! Gibson should do every Les Paul with 2 pick up options-humbuckers & P90s. Don't think I'd get humbuckers again.
Didn't realize there was Japanese porn on the back of the headstock... But really, that's very thoughtful of you to hide the serial number. I never would've thought to do that.
its "you not u" and fuck "gods invisible, non existent work" how is reviewing Gibson guitars "gods work" fucking religious zealots need to become extinct
Looks good from Waukesha. Brings back memories of the 70's. Growing up in upstate NY I had a friend that bought a 1953 gold top for $500. A few years later he needed beer money and sold it for $500. He kicks himself to this day.
Excellent history Austin ! I have seen the original '68 with a crown a few times over the years but never knew the full story . Great job , and lovely geetar ! 👍👍👍
You rock bud!!! I have a 81 deluxe Corina.. With a PAF routed into the bridge and unfortunately a shaved neck to the volute... And it's been gigged since it was new and... I'm just temporary ownership.. Roomate traded for rent and took my SG to play for a while
I had one back in '69. Was my best guitar. Had a SG Junior, about a 63. That was a screamer! Had a mid 60's Guild Starfire III, and a mid 60's Strat -- black with maple neck. Also had one of the first 300 Dan Armstrong Clear Bodies. They all plugged into my Ampeg V4 full stack, with a VT22, with EV SRO's, and a V4 412 cab under it as a double stack. Practice amp was a 60's Ampeg Reverb Jet - with a Utah speaker. Want them all back!!!
Yet again you are providing us all with a very interesting story wrapped in Historic fact. IMHO great information every Les Paul enthusiast should know. Great Guitar too. With the serial number blanked out I fully expect this guitar will be staying in your collection, nice find Austin.
For many years I drooled over a '52 goldtop that had been re-necked at the factory with an SG neck. It was on the NFS rack at Main Street Music in Chico, CA. back in the 70's and 80's.
I have a 1968 with the crown inlay. My dad got it new he refinished it to a sunburst and put PAF’s from a 1961 SG that got broken at the neck joint. He did all the work on it in 1969. It is one of my go to guitars for recording.
Thank you for the details. Btw- a guitar player friend of mine has a 68 LP with P90’s very similar to yours. He bought it used in 1980... The baffling thing is, it’s wine red. He still owns that guitar with a few more but no longer gigs with it. Love the sound of P90’s.

Thank you so much for this. I have seen the crown on other les paul models, including the robot guitar, the classic antique, and a few LPJ models. I always wondered about it, and thought it was pretty cool. I had no idea that it was a simple blunder though haha.
Thanks to you and The Les Paul fan community at large Ive decided to cancel Slurpees and put some cash towards a 2018/2019 goldtop Tribute Gibson LP 150 bucks in 1150 to go[ I live in Canada 1300 up here]. By September my Epi will have a bro thanks for getting me facinated with these things exciting.
recently bought this guiatr but the aged model. a real beauty, i really am glad i bought it, i like aged guitars and i havent been able to put it down.
I love this thing. Being an SG player/fan/collector who prefers p90's as well, the crown on the peg head and pickups really appeal to me. It would be neat to add to my stable.
You should look at the "guitar of the week" gold top from 2007. It has the crown and binding around the headstock. I have one with sanford magnetics p90's in it (and the original gibson mini humbuckers). It's for sale.
I had an original '68 with the crown inlay. The guitar is actually documented on the '68 Les Paul website. Damn heavy guitar it was. The top strap button was in a slightly different location too from the later models. Someone before me had stripped the top to reveal a beautiful blister maple two piece top. Some work had been done in the pickup cavities too. I assumed a previous owner had been tempted to put humbuckers in but had got cold feet and returned it to P90s. It was missing it's original pickups when I got it. Had some 70's model's in there so I pulled them and stuck in a pair of 50's P90s. Sold it to a guy from Germany around 1992. Wonder where it is now? Ahh the memories...
This Gold Top 68 Reissue replicates the actual 68 Crown inlay Reissue of the 56 Les Paul Gold Top that sported the Tailpiece and Bridge for the First time , Whether a mistake was made with the Crown inlay or it was due to Les Paul himself not contracted with Gibson at this time it makes the Goldie look Special . I have two Japanese C S L Les Paul Copies that sport the Crown inlays in Brown Sunburst so it's kind of Funny that Gibson started to use this " Mistake " inlay on Les Pauls a few years back ! 😎 🎩
I remember a few years ago that someone posted a video of a tour in the custom shop via Vimeo and had asked one of the luthiers about the crown on the those guitars from that 2-Wk period and the luthier explains how it was a typo on the build sheets they used to use. I thought it was common knowledge at that point :) great post! I’ll try to find that original video post on Vimeo and forward the link when or if I do.
Yes, in 1967-68 I always envisioned the Gold Top Reissue having the crown inlay (change for the sake of change) but you were spot on with it as it was a wrong part number at the Gibson Factory. Moving forward to the year 2000 Guitar Center had Gibson make Les Paul standard (limited) in Cherry and Honey finish. These guitars had a crown inlay on a bound small head stock and ebony fret boards, burst bucker pickups and button Kluson Tuners (the Les Paul I always wanted - I bought the cherry finish). This guitar is too cool to describe and plays just as great as it looks. So, all of this started way back in the late 60's when I saw a picture of the original 68 Les Paul Standard with crown inlay. I still have the guitar today and would love to send you pictures.
This was my first Gibson, with the silkscreened headstock, bought used for $200 (maybe $225) in '76. It was a long time ago but I'm fairly certain the P90 plastic covers had the Gibson logo molded in. Traded it for a cherry burst Custom because, well, I just had to have humbuckers!
Reissued my BUTT! Gibson's first bumblebee caps were Mallory caps wrapped in more plastic. The mighty hammer strikes again! Chances are those are Chinese film foil and oil caps wrapped in more plastic, or they are just more Mallory 150 caps.
I don't think that it was a typo. It's just that when they started making the Les Paul again, in 68, they just used the headstock that they were already making, the SG headstock. What happened afterwards is that the people were complaining about the headstock, saying that they wanted the Les Paul as they knew it, with the "Les Paul" script on it. So they changed the specification of the guitar to the original code. If it would've been a typo, it should be noticied and changed right away, not after 6 months
I sent you a message on Facebook with pictures of my '69 Les Paul Standard that was stolen. I've been searching for years trying to find it. Your reply was "am I trying to sell you a guitar?", No, I was asking if you might have seen it or could help me find it. Thanks Again
Is this perhaps the same as Neil young’s guitar? He has a crown on his headstock. I read somewhere that people speculated it had been re-necked also his started out as a gold top and was then painted black...

Beautiful guitar, but I must ask what was the lighting you did the sound demo under it visually changed the colour and Perl crown to a light bronze hue and the body to a much deeper orangy gold mixture, surely it wasn't tungsten lighting was it?
I had to check their latest video to believe that news. That is crazy! I'm sure I could do that job but my playing skills and location don't exactly line up haha

But really, that's very thoughtful of you to hide the serial number. I never would've thought to do that.
I was wondering about that. Anything outstanding about this SN to make it necessary to hide?
Why is it thoughtful? Only reason to hide it is if it was fake or stolen.
Because it's for sale

Neil Schon's (Journey) wife just got him a 1954 LP P90 Gold top for his birthday. It's beautiful...and so his she.

True
This is likely
Robotuners might trump the crown headstock as far as blunders are concerned.
And now it’s “play authentic”
The robo tuners hold a place in Gibson history. They mark an era.
Beautiful sounding Guitar 🤗
Now I really want one! The Crown , the Soap bars , come on , beautiful !!! PEACE

the fact that SG stands for solid guitar really disappoints me.
You can always go with “Second Generation “ . But I doubt it’ll make you feel much better. “Smokin’ Guitar” may work though.
How about the fact that Ibanez' RG stands for Roadstar Guitar, and they don't actually call them Roadstars anymore? Lol

Questions. Why is the crown lower than all the others and why did you pixel are the back of the headstock where the serial number is?
The crown inlay on all Gibsons that had them were moved lower in '68, so the crown on this guitar is probably accurate. The top carve looks right for a '68 - less (if any) "dish" than the 52-60 models. It looks like it has the thick binding in the cutaway, which is correct for '68, as well as a 14 degree headstock.

The angle of the headstock is brougth back to 14 degrees instead of the
Usual 19 degrees.
Its going to play easier.

Woaw, this is absolute guitar porn (over 8 minutes of monologue rocking a goldtop back and forth)! Still super interesting, kudos!
I love me a Goldie w' P90s (got a 56R but I really dig the crown inlay, like those early 00's GOTM LP's)
Thought SG stood for Spanish Guitar?
I've always wondered about Neil Young's Old Black. It has the crown headstock but (and it's been a while since I read about it) he claims it was a 50's LP. The only way that could be is if it had been re-necked.
Jason Allen Old Black was renecked in 1968, hence the crown inlay.
Am i imagining things or does this guitar seem to have a slightly scooped tone rolled off type quality? Is that down to the nylon? I like it.
Well, it's not bad, could you give me the name of the store where you bought it, or pass me the link please
I'm not a LES PAUL expert although I've got a few of them but isn't the plastic covers on the back supposed to be cream like the plastic parts on the front? I've always thought all the plastics on the actual body should match? Just asking, thanks, great video!!
Nope - the correct historic color is black or brown. On some USA models you can find cream and nearly all fakes use cream too
