This is real Americana. I met Charles three years ago when he played a small gig in a small bar in my small rural town in Sweden. I chatted with him before and after he played. Lovely man. Ther were only about 50 people in the place on a weekday night. After he'd played, he walked off the small raised corner stage of the bar and more than half the people left. Then a couple of minutes later he pulled up a chair way forward of the stage by the 20 or so of us still sitting at a few tables, and started to chat with, and asked "do you want to hear a few more?" And went straight into a cover, Country Roads, which coming from his home and his heart was the greatest version I'd ever heard.
What a great evening, the music and the back and forth between us.
His music hits you where it hurts in a good way that also soothes.
Listen to his Seneca Creek album if you haven't already heard it. My signed copy is almost worn out.
A few months later Joshua Ray Walker played in the same bar, also a fantastic singer/writer.

Love folk music a lot. Both US and UK styles. Ironically, I have a deep hatred for country music, like it makes me angry. But real folk, deep story, well written. I can get with that all day. :) Love this

Who’s watching after the Kentucky coal miners stick. Apparently they haven’t been paid since December 16th and had to work 16 hour days.
They blocked the train shipping coal, saying it can’t be shipped without paying them for there labor.
Apparently all of them are owed at minimum $2,500 to $3,600 and some are owed more.
Not surprisingly the company denied it. The behavior of a guilty party.
My guess with the struggles of a dying Industry they wanted to cut costs, so tried to get away without paying the miners. But they got caught.

Yeah it is sad in a way. The end of an era. People mined coal for generations. It was a hard and dangerous job, but paid decently. Then market factors shut the coal fired power plants. Which is for the best environmentally. But even as an environmentalist it is sad to see a domestic industry to go. That is why on my plan to transition the country away from fossil fuels, they get retraining and even better paid jobs.

This guy literally praises scrip, which was a very effective means of enslaving and abusing miners and their families. You think you were rich when the company even owned the bed you slept in? Ask Merle Travis what that was like! This guy talks about battles and wars, but he's totally confused about which side is which.
Y'all are so desperate to hear a pretty song about WV that you'll thumb up anything, no matter how terribly distorted the story is.

Christopher Gudger-Raines it is the juxtaposition of the good and bad parts of life as a coal miner. You make the most of what you have and always try to get by even if that involves a necessary evil. Many of the families on welfare in WV hate not being able to work and provide for their family but atleast their kids aren’t starving. This is a song about the struggles of WV and how little people understand it.
