I agree on your scalping criteria. Excellent! Get rid of the brown! At my last place I always did this and then I hand raked with a wire or toothed grass rake made out of metal, and sucked up the junk with the lawn mower. Small lawn. Had the best front lawn on the block. Then the choice of minerals and fertilizer is very important. Keep up the good work! After scalping, I like to use a quickly available nitrogen with some more moss killer which has iron, magnesium and a little calcium cuz our soil acid level goes up over the winter.
It is early February here in central texas 2021. I just ordered my pre emergent, pfg complete and humichar. According to the 2021 grass calander , it says to use these products earlier than scalping in late March. I just want to double-check and make sure that I am safe to put out the 3 products that I mentioned before scalping. I don't want to have the scalp done and the benefits of the product be stripped away. Hope I made sense....
Just bought a house with new sod. After the winter should I still scalp? or let it go one year before that time? BTW I'm in Central Texas and I really really appreciate your videos!
I scalped my bermuda after the first season, the only thing is you can't go as low because usually a new lawn is not level enough to take it down super low. Go as low as you can without digging up the dirt. Work on leveling the low/high spots this second season and next year you should be able to go even lower. If your new sod is relatively flat, I would say go for it and scalp it good.
Hey Doc, got a bit of a crisis. Lol I bought my house in July. 100° degree heat. DIY projects renovating. Anyways, in that time I almost saved the yard... Almost. The bam, lots of disease and weeds and soil dried up Quick! Cracks everywhere. Anyways, I figure it's fall and I should basically start my yard from scratch. It's bad It's embarrassing. Should I scalp, kill weeds, aerate, seed? I basically just need to get to a foundation ready for spring. Quick two-worded step by step would be appreciated. FYI, I'm in San Antonio, TX. If that helps.
Great videos. I’m a new subscriber (activated the bell). I’m in the Dallas TX area. I’m going to commit to using your calendar! Should I start now with getting it scalped now (September)?
Gday Doc, I am looking for a little advice.. I plan on top dressing my law in about a month from now as I live in Australia. As its already getting warm here could I scalp my lawn now let it grow for a month then top dress it or should I just leave it? Any advice would be appreciated cheers!
I scalp after the pre-emergent is down. I'm in Florida Panhandle and I just put down Prodiamine this week. I won't scalp for a couple more weeks. Pre-emergent is on the soil so you're not affecting it by scalping the vegetative material off the grass. You might want to consider a second small app if you disturb the ground too much during the scalp. You can do two half-apps if this is a problem for you. I don't scalp all the way to dirt so I think my pre-m should hold until the next app.

Hi doc, which lawn service do you use to scalp? I'm also based out of GA.

Literally in the EXACT same situation (sod laid July 2018). Any help on this would be very appreciated! Thanks for making these videos!

It's May. I'm in NC. Bermuda is currently at 2 inches. Is it too late to scalp? Thanks.
How long does as it to green up again after scalping?
Can you put down pre-emergent before you scalp or should you wait till after?

Maybe kill everything and plant annual rye. Then in the LATE spring do bermuda seed.
What's a good seed to use Bermuda grass

Scalping is done in the spring only.
Thank you for the video, What are your thoughts of burning off the dead grass ?
No burning..... too many problems.
Thank you , I just see a lot of people here in Augusta Ga doing it . Thank you for your reply @@HowTowithDoc
Don’t do it-
Gday Doc,
I am looking for a little advice..

Should I still scalp if I don't have much Bermuda, but mostly weeds. I'm planning to aerate, fertilize and overseed.
Leave the weeds long and spray them. Wait for a week, then scalp. The killer needs to be on the surface to work.
How To with Doc I've put down some pre emergent and weed and feed down. What spray should I use to kill the rest of the weeds?
Do we scalp after we apply pre emergent or scalp before?

4-5hrs of work for $200? Better keep that lawn service, that's a deal.
Have you tried burning?
