I worked for Boss Game Studios in Redmond, WA 1999-2002. They were Boss Studios doing special effects for movies: such as Fright Night, Multiplicity, Ghostbusters II and one of the Batman movies. They switched to game production they said because everyone could do special effects and they had to move on. They were owned and managed by people from the UK. They were great to work with and I only left because a team I worked with at Sierra On-Line wanted me back. Boss Game Studios went out of business around 2003.

Alien 3 was fine, it closed off the story in a dramatic way, everyone dies in interesting ways. trilogy done. Then some @sshole thought it was a good idea to clone Ripley back to life and attempt to continue the story with a strange Art-House director even though Sigourney was visibly only doing it for the money. Was waiting for this episode! Have heard so much about this production, so the deep dive was super interesting. And really look forward to the rest of the series!
It’s stunning when you think about the advancements that have been made in technology since this film. When you were talking about interpolation from high frame rates to lower frame rates, I thought, “well, that’s easy.” Easy now, not so easy then.
Every time I make videos on older films it's always insane how they were able to pull some of this stuff off. Click of a button today but incredibly complex then.
The Alien movies are my favorite movies. My youngest daughter saw the 2nd with my husband and her dad at way too young of age while I was grocery shopping. Anyway She used to say that I was Ripley and she was Newt, and I would always save her from the monsters and I told her yes I would always save her from the monsters. I really like Alien 3's story line. The Prison planet was terrifying itself then added the aliens. I love Ripley's character in all the movies . I could go on for hours....
Surprised this film still turned out as good as it did. One of the best looking and sounding Alien films, Weaver's best performance in the series. Yes it's down beat and dark, and that's also OK. This film was never supposed to be a "shoot 'em up" sequel to Aliens. It's still a Fincher film, even if he's disowned it.
Boss films was of course originally Trumbull’s EEG effects group - replaced by Richard Edlund’s company using the same building and facilities in Marina Del Rey. I did not know this when given a tour in 1986, Edlund then showed us the famous cloud water tank and commented it was the same one used on Close Encounters.
What I would GIVE to see a WOODEN MONK PLANET as a setting for Alien 3. What a bonkers insane concept that would have been so visually interesting for a cold, stark franchise as this.
I was one of the few who actually liked this one. I saw it in the theaters with my brother. We were huge fans of the previous 2 films but were too young to see them in theaters so this was our first time seeing Alien in a theater and ... we loved it. Especially the Dog Alien. But all things considered I thought it was a cool premise and I think it was a good idea to sort of limit the scale. Great friggin mini doc. btw! Really well done. I will revisit these.
Underrated. Great ending to the trilogy. Yes, the other movies doesn’t exist. I actually like it better than ”Aliens” which is dated 80’s action, loud and with characters that aren’t believable at all. But of course, ”Alien” stands alone as a work of art, the perfect film.
It'd be interesting to see William Gibson's adaptation on screen. It would focus a lot more on Hicks & Bishop barely on Ripley or Newt but at least they don't get killed off and we'd get an interesting take on the xenomorph. I like 3 but it's depressing to have Ripley lose her entire surrogate family through everything she went through
Yeah honestly would have preferred that film 😅 just outright killing them after you got attached to them was kind of a wasteful way for them to die. Though the alien universe is a hellish place
Killing Hicks and Newt added to the tragedy of Ripley's dark journey and was a reminder that she will see all her loved one's including everyone on Earth die if she wasnt willing to make this final sacrifice to stop the Alien forgood.
@@FrameVoyager Yeah I have absolutely nothing to base this on other than behind the scenes interviews from the Alien documentary, but there something slimy about David Giler. He may have been a perfectly nice man, but he just reeks of a slimy, scheisty producer and not in the endearing Robert Evans kind of way.
I love A3, especially the assembly cut. I'd really like to know what Fincher's version would have looked like... what was his original story for A3? Unfortunately, we'll probably never know or did Fincher ever give any hints about his ideas?
I know the wooden death star monk station is impopular among Alien fans. But I'm actually a bit sad that we never got to explore that fantastical side of the alien universe. I mean. It could just be explained away as an extended cryosleep nightmare by the fourth movie while Ripley questions her sanity during her inevitable next run in with the Xenomorph saga.
Honestly the idea sounds super cool and "artsy" would love to have seen that personally. It would have been interesting to see how they pulled that off back in the day
Having it all "be a dream" is a disastrous way to make an entry in a franchise usually. It simply always seemed to fantastical for the Alien series, which is rooted in the Blade Runner style dystopian future (I know the first Alien came first, but the book of Blade Runner didn't).
It may not be a director's cut but Fincher's first Assembly Cut was released on DVD and Blu-Ray and it's well worth a watch. It's the closest thing we'll get to a director's cut and greatly improves on the theatrical edit.
Alien 3 gets way too much hate from fans who just want a repeat of Aliens with lots of action and happy endings. Fincher brought it back to it's claustrophobic horror roots and it's more true to the original than Cameron's vision. People are too shallow in their criticisms, the film is dark and fatalistic because it's meant to be a tragedy, it's like a stage play and most are oblivious to the masterful symbolism and themes present, it deals with some deep topics and the sacrifice motif at the end was the best way to send off the Ripley character. People really just wanted another action popcorn flick and it's too bad, this one had incredible cinematography and acting and feels true to the franchise roots, it's a horror film, of course it has an unhappy ending and characters you love die.
My main issue was the alien was too inconsistent as far as how it looked. Parts looked great when it was practical but others looked terrible on green screen. In the 3rd it shouldn’t look worse than the first two. I get it was sign of the times and they tried new things but is what it is. I also just didn’t like the whole prison thing either. Outside two of the characters, all of the prison characters kinda just annoyed me. It’s a film that has the potential to be great but fell short for the reasons in this video
I saw this in the theater and admit I was disappointed. But I've come to appreciate this movie, especially considering the crazy production. I'd recommend the longer 2003 "Special Edition" as it fleshes the characters out better. Its got some very underrated performances with Weaver and some noticeable British Actors early in their carriers like Charles Dance and American actor Charles S Dutton.
I know I’m in the tiny minority here, but I rank this one second in the franchise, just ahead of Aliens. I love the prison colony setting, the complex relationships she forms with the prisoners, the scene where she gets the flight log data from Bishop, and the ending. If we pretend Resurrection never happened, I felt like this was an emotional and fitting conclusion to the trilogy. Great series of videos btw!
It's just behind Alien and ahead of Aliens for me, too. I have always liked that it went back to its horror roots and wasn't marines in space. I also like all the same things you listed.
ALIENS is a great action-flick but a very poor ALIEN-movie. I will never understand the love for ALIENS as ALIEN³ has much better dialogue, a better score and a great production design. Also, the fight against XX121 is tense again.
There is something special about the films from the 80s to the late 90s. Due to how primordial the CGI was by today's standards I'd say the films have aged really well due to the advanced prosthetics ,location work and puppertiering work. Terminator 2, Aliens, The Matrix and even Event Horizon. As for Fincher, the man deserves all the praise in the world for not only being able to get this film out as his debut but juggling the imbeciles at the Studio. His work following this only further proves his quality.
I like the Theatrical Cut but I prefer the assembly cut except in two Scenes: The Aliens' birth (coming out of a live dog instead of a dead ox just hits harder) and Ripley's death (mostly because the music works better). Overall, the death of Hicks and Newt right at the start is a hard pill to swallow but once I get past that point, A3 is a very well shot, wonderfully dark Horror-Movie, featuring Actors all turning in good performances at least and an excellent Score. I really wish Fincher could get over himself and make a directors cut. I can understand being pissed off, but its been well over 30 Years. If I were him, this bad experience would feel like an itch I'd love to scratch and I would do something about it, especially if my name was still attached to it.
Apart from the dated CGI, I really love this movie, and don't understand why it gets all the hate. The weird looking green halo round the CGI definitely wasn't present in the original cinema release. Only when it was transferred to the small screen.
2 things saved Fincher.... 1 was Sigourney Weaver staunchly defended Fincher to the press and 2 was that Arnold Kopleson had no respect for Fox's management and decided to take a shot on the young director with a little film called Se7en. the rest is history.
I know it's an unpopular opinion- but Alien 3 doesn't deserve half the criticism it gets... I remember seeing this on VHS when it came out, and though the suspense and horror were great. That came out over 30 years ago, I've only seen it a few times since then, yet I remember more scenes from it than any other in the franchise.. David Fincher rules.
I was on holiday in the US when this came out, and as a Brit, I found it hilarious when the prisoners called the Alien a 'W@nker!" as if they were in a pub on a Friday night! I also did some college work experience at Pinewood Studios, and one day during a break happened upon the 'back door' of an Alien 3 sound stage. Unfortunately, there was no Sigourney in sight... sigh...
That was an interesting analysis, I've always enjoyed Fincher's movies. It's a shame we weren't able to see his unrestricted vision for Alien 3. Your retro segment transitions look really nice! Were they made with after effects? Looking forward to your next video 😉
It really is. But he refused to do a directors cut 😅 don't blame him honestly. But thanks! I actually have multiple old CRT TV's that I run HDMI from my computer over to and then play from my editing timeline and record with an fx30 back through obs 😅 so it's actually all practical. You can see them behind me in the few studio shots I use!.
This is a good dive into the production, but I must say that the choice to present this in 1.90:1 is baffling. All of the archival footage is now windowboxed or awkwardly cropped in.
David Fincher’s films are a masterclass in style over substance, a carefully crafted illusion that mesmerizes with its aesthetic but falters under scrutiny. I want to call his work, terrible, of course, an exaggeration, but it’s a reaction born out of frustration with the relentless hype that elevates his every project to revered status. His movies are undeniably polished, meticulously designed to look strikingly “Fincher,” yet they remain trapped in their own glossy sheen. There’s a stillness, a coldness that permeates his work, a calculated mood that overshadows the narrative rather than serving it. Fincher’s meticulous direction, the carefully composed scenes, and the restrained performances often overshadow the story itself, creating a veneer that’s more about how the story is told than what it’s actually saying. His films are beautiful, yes, but in a way that feels choreographed to the point of sterility, lacking the depth and emotional resonance that elevate cinema from mere visual spectacle to something truly impactful. It’s as if the substance is sacrificed at the altar of style, leaving a lingering sense of something missing, a hollowness that keeps his films from achieving the kind of lasting, meaningful impact they so desperately strive for.
I love Alien 3 the most because it brought it back to horror. No advanced weapons. Just an unlikely group of people trying to survive by outwitting it. Just like in the first film. Dillon and Morse are million times better than Hicks and Newt.
Better than Newt, agreed but better than Hicks? No way, but i really like Dillon and Morse. I like how Morse was an unlikely only survivor. I thought for sure he was gonna get a bloody death scene but he turned out to be the last man standing, I mean limping.
I enjoy Alien 3 for what it is. Still don’t like they killed Newt and Hicks and off screen. Unforgivable after such a great previous movie and the onscreen chemistry of the 3 actors. Recast newt or something.
Don't know why but since I was really young Alien 3 has been my favourite. Even before I even knew who Fincher was, it just seemed to he the scariest Alien film to me. Ripley literally has no safe space to fall back to. The prisoners might have a few good souls amoung them but they're still convicts who can't be trusted. All adding to the constant suspense.
@@ethanmckerrow1012 alien was my first r rated movie my grandparents let me watch as a kid. I also share a name with Kane. Then I got AvP on dvd & watched it nonstop. @DorisDay-lw4xs nah I watched them all in Order and watch them once a year. To this day I really love Alien 3 and wish Fincher had been left alone to do his thing.
Why do people hate on this movie? It's stylistically fantastic and totally rewatchable. Yeah the story is silly but so was the story in Aliens. And Aliens watches like an advertisement for the Marines. Plus did anyone see Prometheus? Utter horsesh$t
I really don't think Alien 3 is that bad. A little slow in the middle, but overall I enjoyed it. It's much better than 4 which felt like a B movie and was overall pretty goofy.
I really enjoyed it at the time. Mostly because it offered another perspective. Now, with Romulus, I appreciate Alien 3 even more. The most Alien movie of them all… because you can sense, even when they don’t state it directly, that the COMPANY is the main villain through centuries….
There should be another ALIEN film that happens on "Fury" 161. Where "the company" has decided to reopen the prison and has a "new" portion that still connects to the "old" section used in ALIEN 3. Then have a plethora of ANIMAL Xenomorphs wrecking havoc. It would be like the Dark Horse comics. Bulls. Lions. Gorilla. etc.
Alien 3 could haver been better, but I still consider it one of the better Alien movies. The atmosphere they created was fantastic. It had several great scenes but lacked a more embracing plot.
I really wish the puppet work had been composited better because everytime it was the puppet composted in it looked terrible. But the puppet here looks great.
Problems aside - it's still a more original film than Romulus (which started off interesting and ended up nothing but a 'member berry slideshow). Charles Dance was amazing in Alien 3.
I really like this film, particularly the assembly cut. I hope one day DF can reconcile himself enough to revisit it either with a commentary or a proper documentary. I think there’s enough of his style to make it distinctive and the bits that do work are down to him but I’d love to know what is and isn’t his. My only real “beef” with Alien3 is the arbitrary way they kill off Hicks and Newt, I think there should have a been a better way of separating them, maybe have Ripley’s pod found solo leaving Hicks and Newt’s fate open and an option for a future sequel.
Loved Alien 3. Look at the superb British casting, Brian Glover, Paul McGann et al. OK the Alien effects are dodgy, but it had a good concept of no weapons. The directors cut is much more of a story.

I truly appreciate your site; it's very informative and I love the various segments you offer.
Appreciate it! Glad you're enjoying it!
Bro, David Fincher shading FOX is not what I expected to see but I'm glad I seen it cause he's so right.
My new favorite channel!
Love your videos. New favorite channel!!!
Appreciate it!
I'm in that minority with you!
ALIENS is a great action-flick but a very poor ALIEN-movie. I will never understand the love for ALIENS as ALIEN³ has much better dialogue, a better score and a great production design. Also, the fight against XX121 is tense again.

Same. 👍
Alien 3 is a fantastic film
Apart from the dated CGI, I really love this movie, and don't understand why it gets all the hate.
The weird looking green halo round the CGI definitely wasn't present in the original cinema release. Only when it was transferred to the small screen.
Alien 3 is better than anything after it.
Romulus is so much better than this sleeper of a film
Assembly cut is brilliant.
This is the best of all the Alien movies and I don't understand the tone of contempt.
I think this film is underrated
Just excellent work all round on this video. Wow.
I love the idea of Newt leading a group of underground xenomorph hunters on a periapocalyptic earth.
2 things saved Fincher.... 1 was Sigourney Weaver staunchly defended Fincher to the press
and 2 was that Arnold Kopleson had no respect for Fox's management and decided to take a shot on the young director with a little film called Se7en. the rest is history.
The assembly cut is way better than theatrical version , Alien 3 isn’t that bad really
I hated it at first viewing. After going back I realized how good the film really is.
Unfortunately, there was no Sigourney in sight... sigh...
I once called the Predator a slag and the Terminator a robo-nonce. I spent too long living in SE England, you see.
@@FrameVoyager Wow! Your practical effects turned out much better than those displayed in Alien 3 😅, keep up the good work!
@@hectorthespector 😅😅😅 Appreciate it!
You can never convince me otherwise this movie was great! And Charles S. Dutton was the man!!!
I actually liked this Alien movie, granted not as good as first two but it had a dark aura about it that I liked.
It's wild to think that so many movies had alternate scripts that never saw the light of day.
I think it was a brilliant film - for me there is Alien and Alien 3 and I think they have a lot in common
Alien 3 is a classic for me. Ends Ripley perfectly. My only complaint is one of the cuts when she jumps into the fire goes way too quickly,
Just Wow... and a HUGE THANK YOU to all the film magicians and creators.
@@cesarmedina7080 Agree to disagree.
This whole story is such a bummer. I genuinely love the Assembly Cut so it’s always sad to hear how much of a horror story it was for Fincher.
I actually watched this again and I really enjoyed it.
@DorisDay-lw4xscan vouch resurrection was the first alien movie I saw and I has a special place in my heart no matter what anyone says about it
@@ethanmckerrow1012 alien was my first r rated movie my grandparents let me watch as a kid. I also share a name with Kane. Then I got AvP on dvd & watched it nonstop. The special features made me wanna watch all the movies. Then I went thru my grandparents VHS collection & bam, there was resurrection. My next binge until I started collecting the rest on DVDs
Love Alien3. It has such great moments and characters. They could remake the CGI parts, that would be cool.
Fincher did a magnificent job here, thank you Fincher.
I keep forgetting Danny the dealer was in this movie. "This doll is extremely dangerous...it has voodoo qualities" 😅
There needs to be a Blade Runner / Alien crossover movie asap.
Alien 3 was a good movie.
Bulls. Lions. Gorilla. etc.
8:22 Pretty sure that is supposed to be "monks" and not "months." In the earlier drafts, it was supposed to be a monastery instead of a prison.
@@clayschmoldt8933 ah yes, I must have misspoken. Thanks for the heads up!
@@FrameVoyager No problem. Loving this series so far!
@@clayschmoldt8933 appreciate it!
If anything, as a fan this movie has some hilarious lines to quote in daily life. 😂 "No ******* Icecream !!!"
The film is so underrated.
Crazy that they worked so hard on the Alien puppet just for it to look awful in the end result.
Those are some excellent title cards
Appreciate it!
Problems aside - it's still a more original film than Romulus (which started off interesting and ended up nothing but a 'member berry slideshow).
Charles Dance was amazing in Alien 3.
I like this film better than "Aliens." In the latter, Newt is just an annoying plot device, as bad as "Boxy" in "Battlestar Galaxative" on TV.
11:42 - talks abouit how great the puppets were...then shows a shot of a man in a suit.
Whoops 😅
I really like this film, particularly the assembly cut. I hope one day DF can reconcile himself enough to revisit it either with a commentary or a proper documentary. I think there’s enough of his style to make it distinctive and the bits that do work are down to him but I’d love to know what is and isn’t his.
My only real “beef” with Alien3 is the arbitrary way they kill off Hicks and Newt, I think there should have a been a better way of separating them, maybe have Ripley’s pod found solo leaving Hicks and Newt’s fate open and an option for a future sequel.
It had a great concept and it is in I opinion a solid movie …
If i met him today i would do my best to convince him that he did the best job he could of possibly done
Loved Alien 3. Look at the superb British casting, Brian Glover, Paul McGann et al. OK the Alien effects are dodgy, but it had a good concept of no weapons. The directors cut is much more of a story.
How many years combined was Ripley floating around asleep in space?
Pretty much the whole time 😅 57 years for the first film and then they don't officially say for alien 3 but some estimate a year for that
I like the alien dog version. So cool.
