Whichever producer stopped Scott from having the alien bite Ripley's head off at the end deserves massive kudos. Good grief what a bad idea.

On an interesting note that really shows that the alien in the first movie was supposed to be an intelligent creature, not just a bug like in the rest of the series.

I wasn't alive for the first movie, but my dad recalled that the marketing didn't say a whole lot about what it was about. People bought tickets knowing only knowing that it was a science fiction movie and it was scary "In space no one can hear you scream", and that was about it.

@@CombatMosquitoTrainerThere was one trailer (without the very recognizable scenes flashing in the trailer featured on this platform.) It was a dreamy, classical music montage of some of the extremely beautiful shots in the film, which took their cue from Kubrick's '2001" and ran with them. No one had ever seen like it, I remember that, and a single flash of a red-lettered "WARNING" and then speed picked up to almost strobe light flashes, with alarms blaring, steam blowing, the crew running, then a black screen, silence and a slow pan down to the original poster: a creepy chicken egg with warts and a crack and a green light shining inside. THEN the famous tagline appeared, and a familiar, ominous man's voice: "In Space, No One Can Hear You Scream.) It was GALVANIZING. 💥

thats when a movie at the theater was under 5$ and popcorn+drink was another 5$.. now.. your looking at 50$ absurd.. have not gone to a theater in 5 years. No wonder they are all shuting down or going super expensive 30$ per seat in a recliner with a table and a waitress.. to bring you that massive 20$ soda with a 30$ organic pop corn that taste ok, but not great. I think the reality is that theaters are going the way of the old DRIVE IN.. EXTINCT.

@@TheMarlinspike You get me wrong. I feel the same way about all films that make cynical studio-led virtue-signaling choices over artistic ones. I don't want to see a white Beverley Hills Cop. Or a male Kill Bill. Or Ripley. Frankly, it's not diversity I have a problem with, it's the cynical mindset of those behind the curtain who feel in a position to ethically educate us. Its the concept of corporate lecturing that's the problem, and Scott and Cameron were coming from the right place (as the latter was with Linda Hamilton). You can tell by how well the actors suit their roles (of which far too few are earnestly and effectively written for women ... the real problem). Honestly, when I saw The Hangover, I thought it was "bro" trash, and MUCH preferred Bridesmaids. Because, frankly, it was funnier and more sincere. I can share countless examples. And if you must know, I'm from Africa, and find the Western obsession with optics and rhetoric over genuine progression at times amusing and infuriating.

I cant confirm it, but i read somewhere that the actors did not know how the alien was going to come out of Hurts chest. The script they were given supposedly just said "the alien emerges" and so their reactions are genuine. The team even made the actors leave the room while setting up the fake body for Hurt so the actors didnt see what they were doing.

The scene where the commercial towing vessel “Nostromo” detaches from its payload and lands on the planet is an absolute Masterclass in practical effects and still one of my all time favourite scenes in any movie. Then James Cameron upped the ante and gave us the hero shot of the Sulaco and the drop ship sequence. I actually dusted off the alien and aliens blue ray discs last night in preparation for my annual lounge room alien one and two Film festival and then this awesome little mini doc came up in my YT feed which will dovetail nicely with my plans to eat take-away Indian food, drink rum and watch two of the greatest movies ever made while sharing the couch with my Doberman lol. And then the expression I use EVERY day: "We're on an Express Elevator to Hell! Goin' DOWN!" Cheers. (I went to see' Romulus' here in Manhattan, where the crowd is...discerning, at its most forgiving. And I can't lie: Not Too Shabby. The few self-referential nods to Ridley Scott are subtly well-placed and amusing. He is a co-producer, so there's that. Next stop, 'Gattaca, Titan.' Safe travels.

What I always notice is that Alien is shot on much better film stock for dark scenes. The blacks are simply gorgeous in Alien. And the dynamic range is way more than I have ever seen on digital.
In Aliens the film stock has washed out bluish greys instead of blacks. And a ton of noise. It's probably owing to Aliens being much faster paced while many scenes in Aliwn are static or slow pans.

Saw premiere at Grauman's Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood 1979. First we drove around looking at line around the block. When we got back to front of theater somebody was pulling out of a parking space across street from box office, we pulled in. Walked across street to get tickets thinking that's quite a line to wait in. We bought our tickets and an usher or somebody came up and took us right inside, no wait at all. We immediately entered into the corridor of the Nostromo then a touchable walk by of actual full scale The Pilot set and then to our seats. Never have understood what happened but there was no argument from us. A great event made even better.

Sometimes limited budgets are a blessing in disguise as it required the VFX artists to be more creative and hands on. CGI has it's place but it's become an overused crutch that makes me long for the days of practical effects, particularly squibs verse CG blood.
Alien and Aliens are still the best movies in the entire franchise.

    • @noth606
      @noth606 5 місяців тому +1

I think you have some peculiar definition of 'effort' that nobody else shares or even knows what it is. This was by no means a hugely involved project as far as movies go, there are ones where a smaller crew have put in a lot more not only own time and money but taken risks for, like the original Blair Witch Proj. Some of the Evil Dead, Dario Argento early stuff - heck even later things to some degree, and myriad others. Well, maybe the Blair Witch is a bad example since it was stupidly cheap to make so to speak, but my point is this was a movie where people got paid to make it, they had sets, they had a budget etc. A lot of the way it came out as the final creation was not 'in the script', parts were storyboarded on the fly more or less or not even storyboarded and shot on a whim. Again, not sure what you mean by effort. There was planning but bits were skipped entirely and others modified or partially scrapped, so it is kinda a side effect that it has some disjointed feel, it changed mid shoot with film in the can already.
But in man hours modern movies largely dwarf Alien, because of the distribution and release cost today being bigger for anything going to theatres, anything going straight to streaming is made on a budget that makes this look like a blockbuster.

And this is a perfect example of why I love older movies and absolutely despise newer ones.
Where as much as possible everything is practical, it is so clear that there went so much time, passion and creativity into making those movies.
With movies where literally ever is filmed before some green or bleu screen and then digitally added i just can’t see all of that.
But luckily there are still directors that actually want more practical than digital, it is just sadly😊 way more rare nowadays.

I first saw Alien 3 years after it was made. The last week in my year 7 class the teachers thought they would put on alien (they were thinking it was more like Star Wars!!) right after the chest burst scene the teachers yanked the tape out of the VCR. It took me another 8 years to see the rest of that movie!! 🍿 and yes it’s an absolute classic!! You can see the genuine shock on the other actors faces as the Alien bursts out of John Hirt’s chest!!😮

Had the honour of working with Derek Vanlint (NAME DROP!) and couldn't help but ask him about Alien. @@jackreacher. If that is even true: Revealing that without the reason WHY she turned on you might be a giveaway? Or you still don't know... I have found such a beautyful Girlfriend with an amazing character, and a long time I asked myself why it ended. 10 years later I know every little reason why. Digging in the reasons why she did what she did from her standpoint helps! A big reason for her was that I did not want a kid too soon and that I did not apprechiate her enough, rather spending my weekends with my friends than her later on. That helped me to get her out of my head and find annother beautyful person where I did not repeat my former mistakes.
