2023 F1 Monaco GP qualifying analysis by Peter Windsor

- Red Bull's Max Verstappen achieved the near-impossible in Monaco qualifying when he found over 0.3sec in the final sector to take the pole on his final lap. In this video, Peter Windsor offers a suggestion of where Max created his advantage and, with his own photographs, compares Max's approach to the La Rascasse corner sequence with that of his team-mate, Sergio Perez, and also with that of Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso. Fernando nonetheless qualified on the front row in P2 - and P3, thanks to a three-place grid penalty imposed upon Ferrari's Charles Leclerc for impeding McLaren's Lando Norris (the notice of which was too late for inclusion in this video) now goes to Alpine's very impressive Esteban Ocon. Carlos Sainz and Leclerc start P4-P6 for Ferrari, with Lewis Hamilton lining up P5 in the revamped Mercedes after shunting the car on Saturday morning.

Love him or hate him...Max is insanely talented.
Congratulations brutha!
Imagine being 8 years old in 2005, watching Alonso becoming world champion, and then thinking you'd be at positions 1-2 together qualifying in Monaco in 2023...🤯
Ironically both of them want to try endurance racing. Alonso and Vettel have shown an interest in Le Mans alongside Max. The three of them would have a decent chance there in my opinion. It'll be a dream team.
@@powerboy247 only decent? A bit of a understatement isn’t it?
2005 was one of the Best Pole laps in F1 history. Kimi Raikkonen made Fernando look average and everyone else like beginners!. This & Senna 1988 laps are by far the best pole laps of Monaco if not anywhere!.
@@Aaike1 I don't know the kind of carryover F1 drivers would have at Le Mans so I'm just being a little conservative bud. Lol.

I cheered for Esteban and Alonso when they finished. How exciting for a few moments until max destroyed hopes with an absolutely perfect 3rd sector

Same.

My arms went up when they each took provisional pole. Very exciting no doubt!

I have to say, THAT final sector from Max just blew my mind. What a thrill.
Alonso was still ahead until the last corner.
I couldn't believe he made up close to 3 tenths in that final sector
@@ortiz5922 no, at the last cornet Max was ahead. Go look at the side-by-side that F1 posted on youtube.
@@dsar8727 it is not by much tho
Alonso was the slowest in the top 10 in the final sector at 19.1, most others did 18.9, Max did a 18.8. That’s where the .3 came from. All it was is Alonso was fast through Sector 1 and 2 and had a slow sector 3 and Max was the opposite, so it equals out in the end. If Alonso did an average sector 3, he would be on pole. But was an incredible qualifying.
Max and Alonso, it doesn't get any better. I think Max dreamed of this as a child.
wow thats such an awesome way to think about it
Max did... He was,as a young child, fan of Alonso.. And now these two are 2 times WC and fighting now with eachother. They are good friends and very respectful.
Ocon was also a revelation
@@patricklemire9278 The years-long battle between Esteban and Pierre about who is the best driver in equivalent material is now gradually becoming clear. Well done Ocon.

Max is the Master NO Doubt unreal driving.
Max did that sector 3 amaizing , its was a trill to watch, it was not the car it was max , he is so talented its insane.
To be fair, both things can be true. Their car has been .8th’s a lap faster around every track this year so far.
No its not the car, but it'll never happen without such a car.
@@TunedIntoCars Yea sure I mean Perez showed us what the car can do ???
@@JeLifeCoach True, yet Monaco nullifies speed advantages. It is the car's balance combined with the driver's ability that does it there.
I'm a huge Max fan but the car did have something to do with it. The Red Bull Iwasn't the best around Monaco today, the Aston Martin looked more comfortable, but Max made the difference. The final sector reminded me of my hero Gilles.
The Jeddha lap Max didn’t finish!
That was nuts
You are 100% here
So true.
Still wish he finished that one
@@bensonkalima7076f he could have finished that one, it would have been one of the best quali laps ever.
That qualifying session was spectacular. A pure example of driving skill - the speed Max takes through the swimming pool makes me want to step back from the screen!! Another example of why F1 should be focusing on promoting the driving, not just overtaking statistics.
Also good work by the TV directors today. They showed most of the fast laps and we really saw the skill. Now let's see how tomorrow goes!
TV directors indeed did an amazing job today! Great images of all relevant moments and some very nice new camera angles.
And then the race will be boring as hell, that's Monaco!!!
@@theGoogol In Monaco they had their own people broadcasting the event for years . This year it was the first time the people from Formula 1 took it over

@@Duyf Hopefully no badly-timed Lance Stroll replays tomorrow haha
To everyone who is interested, there is a side by side of the laps of Max and Fernando up on the f1 yt channel. If I watched it correctly, Max is .2 behind between turns 14 and 15. He take that back to .1 behind in the 15/16 chicane at the end of the swimming pool. After Rascasse, he is ahead. So Peter is right, it is not just the speed he carried through the chicane, although that did look spectacular. It was his cornering at Rascasse. I just watch Fernando and Max take that corner ten times in a row and it is absolutely magnificent.
Just see it side by side Wow😮
Yeah I had to rewind that many time too! How was max able to take back all that time in 2 corners!
SuperMax! He will go into F1 history as one of the greatest drivers.
When i saw Max coming out of that final corner like a bat out of hell i knew he had it. I didnt see anyone the whole qualy come out of that corner so fast like it was on tracks.
the interaction between Alonso and Max is so genuine, forget all the drama that goes on everywhere, 1:35 the respect that they have for each other, is so pure.
They're pure racers.
No BS between them hence the respect.
Like I said before, if you would offer Alonso a seat at Red Bull and pay him just one dollar for that season, he would grab this chance straight away. He doesn't need money anymore. He needs a winning car and a rival like Max who really forces him to go over the edge ech and every race. The passion for racing is unbelievable
with this man. A living legend. Max and Alonso in the same team, they would write history together.
That's why Alonso congratulated Max while he was still in the car.
By far Max's best completed pole lap!
I see what you did there. Agreed. 😋

What a lap by Max! As a Max fan, I feel a bit bad for Fernando and he would be the only person I’d be “ok” with getting the pole from Max… That said, hope Max has a clean and strategically-sound race tomorrow and takes his 2nd Monaco victory!
He did!
Max is a magician i had thought Michael or Ayrton was magical but wow he just knows where to get the absolute most out of every lap you don’t need to be a fan to realize just how talented he is with a car - it’s a bit unnatural
Or supernatural!
Max wasnt 3 tenths off. He was 0,240 off and made up 0,380 in the last sector. He simply drove an outstanding s3 Peter. And that was not only the last corner. He was absolutely on the limit at the swimming pool too. Very good qualy from Ocon too. Biggest surprise of the day.
2.4 tenths is basically 3 tenths when talking casually, stop being such a pedant.
he was 0.204 off and gained 0.288 in the last Sector = 0.084 advantage
I dont want to take anyhing from Max's outstanding lap, but the car allows him to drive at the absolute limit. That can not be said for the rest of the field.
@@sr1v3r whats wrong with you ?
Isn’t that what he said??
For a moment, I really thought some of the lads really could prevent Max from taking the pole. Starting with Ocon. But damn, that last sector of Max really blew everyone's expectation at that moment prior to smithereens.
Peter your analysis of Perez is spot on. In my opinion, the reason a lot of drivers can't compete with Max, Lewis, or Alonso is they try to drive like them instead of using their driving style which has gotten them to F1.
This. You're not gonna Out-Max-Lewis-Alonso those three because they're at the top in their style of driving. Alonso for example loves understeer and can simply make it work even though cars which oversteer are theoretically quicker. Max and Lewis prefer oversteer in contrast. They won't ever beat Alonso trying the same things he does. Perez in my opinion just believed in his own hype a tad bit too much. Always blaming the car like in Australia and then in Miami. He tried to Verstappen that corner and lost the rear. Simple. Also he came in with way too much speed. If you observe Gasly slowed down as well as even he picked up on it and wanted to avoid any incidents with Perez.
Thought it was unfair assessment of perez crash that it happened because he was trying to be faster than Max into the corner. I think when the alpine suddenly pulled off the racing line in the lead up to the corner it distracted him enough to cause him to misjudge his entry. Still a mistake of course but the narrative by Peter was just a cheap shot.
@@tmyersf4 Yea I fucken hate the incessant need to psycho analyse everything that these drivers do when none of these guys have any idea what goes through an elite driver's brain under intense situations when we expect that they will be making split-second subconscious decisions. Its the same type of thinking that leads people to come up with crazy conspiracy theories where they claim to know the exact intentions an thought processes of people they dont like
alonso /max both magic !!
Probably the most exciting qualifying in awhile. It was great seeing many different drivers got to the top. I hope the race will be exciting to watch.
Thanks man, for again being spot on. That sector 3 analyses is what does it for me. No drama, no stories to create attention, likes and cuffuffel. Just pure passion for racing and the nitty gritty stuff.
Cannot be more excited for the race. That was one of the greatest qualifying sessions I can remember seeing in all my years of watching F1. Truly on the edge of your seat entertainment.
This is a thrilling and most exciting qualifying session in a long time. Worth experiencing it in a lifetime.
Pulling hard for the Old Ronin, Alonso. He's so immaculate on the track, both in quali & in race! In 'sharp' contrast to The Ferrari Boys, who seemingly always either brushing walls or stopping in tunnels or some other B.S 🤭
But when it comes to qualifying Charles is one of the best. He just makes to many mistakes during the race. If he can fix that and has the right car he will be champion one day.
Dear Peter, more photographs welcome. Quality is not an issue (with me!!). Your insights are very informative. Thank you.
It does to me, how difficult would it be to put your lens beyond the railings?
the media was too quick to anoint him as the street king, that got into his head, and the pressure got to him as well.
He's been called the king of the streets for a while now. That aint it. More or so pressure to repeat the win and stay in the fight. Season is still long. You never know.
@@grod6998 He was nothing more than the pupil yesterday. I wonder what Checo's father has to say about his blunder.
@@grod6998 He has been called king of the streets without merit. Every single win he took over Max on a streettracks was because Max had some sort of problem. Baku this year was the only time I felt Checo had the pace to beat Max on merit. Even with that, Max is still leading the head to head on street tracks against Checo.
historic run from young max
Hi Peter, as always a very good analysis - it works well accompanying your explanations with photography. Please do more of that
Yes, please do!
Monaco is a track which reveals the best pilots/drivers...not so much the best cars....thats why it is so special !
We are very lucky to be living in an era we get to see Max. He’s the real deal and up there with the greats.
That last sector was amazing
Overrated: RB were quicker than aston in that sector all weekend, and max did his lap last out of everyone which means the track was at its quickest when he did the lap.
@@andrewmelton2686 Agree. He was the last to post a time (better track), his previous sectors were slower (probably better temperature in the tyres in last sector) and he's driving a freaking Red Bull. The real hero is Alonso.

@@andrewmelton2686
I have to agree. It’s just the usual fanboys. Sector 3 is perfect for RB-19 and they were far quicker all weekend there than anybody.
The technical stuff in sectors 1/2 they weren’t actually as good as the Aston and similar to the Merc in parts. It’s just that speed it pulls when it lays down the power is like nothing else on the grid. That’s where the time came from. He did nail it too to be fair but let’s be objective about it.
I think Max has done this before: easy in sector 1, speed up in sector 2 to have the tires to go full blast in the last sector. I think it is a planned strategy.
He did the same in the first q3 run, green/green/purple -> pole
It's because of the car, Rb19 is very kind on it's tire, so warming them up has been it's weak point. Max was understeering whole way through first sector, he was not holding back. Even in practice session, he would go faster on 2nd or 3rd lap because of tire warm-up issue they have.
No, the Aston was superior in the first 2 sectors. Max wasn't taking any of that lap easily.
@@prahardarji6147 This. That's also why Max frequently does two or even three runs on a set of softs while most others do only one.
Great analysis PW, I think you got it spot on where Max had the upper-hand. My first GP was the British GP back in 1957 (Aintree) and I honestly think this was one of, if not the best Q sessions ever. The quality of the drivers on this years grid is outstanding and they showed it today. Alonso as always pure class, Ocon, Leclerc and Sainz spectacular and Max in a league of his own.
That's incredible that Max pulled 3 tenths out of the last sector. Just insanity.
You are right! I was watching Alonso va Max qualy laps (split screen) and up to that corner Alonso was in front. Because of that different Exit of that corner Max got first at the finish line.
Thanks Peter! Loved the pictures. Really helps us visualize the differences!

@@Retr0Static yes, some people get over the top.
One should always think twice before using the word 'ever'.
@Rens van der Ploeg yep, max is certainly in the upper echelon of f1 drivers(most likely motorsport drivers), but it's difficult to flat out call him the best ever. He is hardly the first driver to have a "send it" driving style. One driver that comes to mind has to be Gilles

Perez has got some amazing skills but he has to have these off days that cost him so much.
We've seen why Perez can't beat max over a whole season since he joined RBR. In those 2+ years the only time Perez looked on par with Verstappen was Baku this year. He's simply not as talented as Verstappen is.
That's why Redbull should let them race and stop favouring max . unless perez got lucky or has an amazing race he can't beat max and you can't get lucky or have amazing race whole season.
@@pantrofl I'm not sure anyone's as talented as Max.
@@neilwilliams2883 I'm a Max fanboy but that's a bit of a stretch brother. Lewis, Alonso, George and Charles are right up there. Does max have the edge over them for now? Yes. But that can change very quickly from track to track especially if the others have a car that can compete with Redbull. Though if you would go by their junior karting records then yes Max is simply ahead of everyone if history is an indicator of the things to come.

Yes, for me too, Max is up there with Schumi, Senna and Lewis, a once-in-a-generation talent.
@05:06 It surely gave him an edge, but the real reason he raged through S3 was, in his own words, that he kept an eye on his delta all the way.👴🤔
So coming out of S2 he saw the gap and immediately ['started to trow as many buckets of coal in the fire as possible and'(my words)] took all the "reasonable" risks in S3.😳
He touched every wall, some even quite hard in virtually every apex to have the straightest line as possible there.😨😳
That resulted in this mesmerising S3 and an unbelievably pole for him.😎

I clapped Max for a long time after THAT pole. It’s not something that I’m moved to often but THAT pole will be remembered for ever. Charles was slightly conservative in that evil Ferrari - he had to be to avoid damage - but was very close. Peter didn’t know of Charles 3 place drop to 6th. I can’t see him making progress in that Ferrari but you never know. Hope Fernando has a clean race and his relentless pace will stand him in good stead. Looks like no rain unfortunately.
That lap reminded me of his lap at Jeddah a couple of years ago where he binned it but this time he finished the lap but just barely
Fine Analysis Peter
I have to say that was one of Max best Poles very exciting especially because i think Max was down in 5th near the end and they did 3 runs in Q3 which mostly its only 2 runs so i was surprised to see others putting it on pole one after the other, and great lap from Ocon
This is the 2nd time where Perez crashed in Q1 and that is why he is behind Max, the difference between a racing driver and a good driver. Yip agreed Peter why go so fast in Q1 when it was not necessary???
What a quali! Man!
What an amazing qualifying session. I would happily watch 2 of those every time we go to Monaco! With the limited strategy options of the Monaco race I think it would be a wonderful weekend to have 2 shorter races, both with a mandatory pit stop. The only downside would be the lack of running for drivers to get settled and build confidence.
Ocon was the star today imo
You didn't mention him, but shout out to DeVries for turning things around, so far, this weekend.
Also, great music; you and Aiden Millward ought to do some music compilations.😄
