I remember watching these videos back when I was in high school when they were coming out. Crazy how time flies - and how video quality has drastically increased too
Incredible guitar! I believe the sustain from :50 to 1:00 has you checking the floor for a sustainer pedal! One of the best sounding guitars on UA-cam played by the best reviewer.
I played my friends '59 the other day. The tone was so rich and clear! It's one of those things that make you ask yourself "Is it even possible to get tone this good? I thought only Heaven could have such vibrant sounds!"
The 1959 les paul is the reason i play guitar. It is the ultimate guitar in every way shape or form. everything about it is just PERFECT. i can only dream of someday playing one. (which probably would be problematic cuz im a left player lol) still, Ill always crave it.
After listening to this I sat & just stared at the screen for 5 minutes with my eyes wide open, jaw to the floor & goosebumps all over me in amazement. Then 5x more repeats in listening.. AMAZING..!!!
They were never that much. And now there not anywhere near 250 grand either. Baby Boomers are dying and nobody else cares that much to pay huge coin for these guitars. In twenty years 59 bursts will be right where they should be around 30 to 70 grand.
doublestrokeroll I have a 1993 Epiphone Les Paul, and it sounds just like a 1959 Les Paul. I think the reasons for this is that it's fairly light weight for a Les Paul and the pick ups are unpotted, just like the old 59ers were unpotted. The light weight gives it more of a hollow body tone, while the unpotted pickups pick up more of the wood's resonant tones. Just a hunch, but I'd put money on it that I'm right. I own three vintage Les Pauls and sadly none really fool me into thinking I've got a 59 tone, but that Epiphone never fails to make me think it sounds like a 59. I love Jimmy Page, and even used to be in a Led Zeppelin tribute band. So I'm very familiar with Page's tone.
It's interesting cause somewhere on line the have a list of the weights of many of the 59's on record and they are almost all under 9lbs. I was a bit surprised to see this one as being nine and a half. I do think that weight range has a big part to play in the tone. I've got an Oville by Gibson (Japanese made gibson) that is 8 pounds even....solid...no weight relief or chambers....and it sounds amazing too. So yeah....I agree with you....people think LP's need to be heavy...I think it's the other way around...they need to be light....not too light.....but that 8 to 10 pound range is where it's at.
@LosMouertos thanks for your message, but the guitars are actually quite different when you check the photos side by side. There are marks on the front and back of the Howard Leese LP that distinguish it from this guitar.
Fuck I love watching this guy. Because whenever I put my guitar away and think: time to make a coffee, take a break, maybe listeon to some music or read something... so whenever I do this I go to youtube and there's Frettedamericana film in recommended yt section. As soon as I hear him playing I think: nah I'd rather play guitar more. So fuckin' inspiring :D No shit man I love that, there's so much rock n' roll in you :D
really, people need to come down off of their clouds. I like old guitars, but they are ''old'' guitars with old weak magnets and worn frets. Lets be real about this. Its 10% guitar and 90% amp. And that ain't no shit.
finally someone intelligent and PS Les Paul himself said it, "electric guitar sound is 90 percent the amp" I would also add that the player and his vibrato are quite important too, PS how come nobody has ever done a blindfold test, say a 59 burst and a reissue burst and let's see the experts tell the difference
Beautiful guitar. People should just make stuff that looks exactly like this but has modern features. The guy really knows how to sing well as well. Nice.
My guitar teacher actually has a 1959 les paul, MADE in 1959. Its amazing, its become a light red over the years, but sounds amazing. He picked it up 10 years ago at a garage sale for only $800!
@dokdorian im sorry ur right. i stand corrected. so yeah i dont get why its the 59 either than. (i could be wrong but) wasnt 59 the last full year that they made the les paul in this way before they changed it to the sg (and yes i know it was still called the les paul for a while after it was changed)
The more a guitar is played, the more the guitar resonates. Another fact is that creating such a high-end guitar to day costs so much you wouldn't believe it!
In 2019 Bon Jovi came to Munich with Def Leppard opening... I actually only wanted to see Leppard. The only reason I stayed for the Jovi part of the gig is because of Phil.
@guitarcrazzzydude92 Brazilian rosewood fretboard with 22 medium jumbo frets. Inlaid pearl trapezoid (crown) position markers. Two PAF humbucker pickups (double-black) with outputs of 7.86k and 7.78k.
A lot of it is just nostalgia, but the saying "they don't make em like they used to" still holds true and the minor imperfections that they since then have ironed out gives each model a unique personality. It is pretty much universally agreed that unless you're willing to spend at least 1500, you're better or not buying a Gibson (unless it's vintage).
Beautiful guitar. I have a 2007 gibson les paul standard in iced tea and it sounds great but you can really tell that this one sounds much more vintage and velvety.
pockleberry says, i just translated it= "You, Eyo Did you? ! In my country, Les made in 59 "show only person willing to buy" stance, so just shop, where I get to see you play this way crunchy, very grateful. Do not know English, was written in Japanese tea myself."
hey phil you are awesome bro. i really like your style of just good hard rock playing, with your jazz and country influences instead of just hanging on blues like most guitar players. just a little constructive criticism though, the whole lotta love riff should be three muted strums in between each strum on the E5 chord. it seems strange at first but when you figure it out it feels amazing.
I remember watching these videos back when I was in high school when they were coming out. Crazy how time flies - and how video quality has drastically increased too
Phil is a veritable genius on guitar.
When ever I get bored at work i watch Phil's guitar reviews... and then I LMAO..!! Thank you Phil X..!!!
AWESOME DUUUUUDE
I still come back to this video at least twice a year. Vintage Phil X on a vintage 59, it doesnt get much better than this.
Love this dudes vibe
I wonder how it feels to be holding $750,000.00.....
It probably feels a lot like holding onto wood
my cock is worth a million dollars and i hold that every day
honestly surprised this demo was done standing up. when I played a 59 they made me sit down and they walked up to me and handed me the guitar.
@@snapascrew so did you buy it?
This guy actually has a cool sounding voice. Very nice 👍🏼
He should be in a band like Bon Jovi or sumpthin’ , right?
@@tonybulmer6365does he sing in Bon Jovi?? I never watch their performances so I wouldn’t know
Great player, gorgeous guitar, love this video.
yep, well said
This guitar never ceases to amaze me... It sounds so beautiful.
For $900,000, it better not come with a gig bag
I imagine it would come in the original hard case
Ryan Thompson Guitarist it was a little sarcasm
it wasnt 900. It was 385
every person reviewing a guitar should be like this guy.
"and i didnt drop it this time! ....or last time"
There is only one Phil X
Incredible guitar! I believe the sustain from :50 to 1:00 has you checking the floor for a sustainer pedal! One of the best sounding guitars on UA-cam played by the best reviewer.
59 les paul is king of all axes!
+geovanie flores actually the 1957 les paul is the best
+Peter Adolph Michaelsen Zegarra we all have opinions. the 59s are rare and they're used by ma man jimmy page
I played my friends '59 the other day. The tone was so rich and clear! It's one of those things that make you ask yourself "Is it even possible to get tone this good? I thought only Heaven could have such vibrant sounds!"
Just to clear things up there was 1600 59s made but only 600 are accounted for
That Ziff guy probably has 200 of them. I heard he has Beano too. God these are the Grail.
I have some great guitars but this thing screams
This guy's the best. I could listen to that clean tone all day.
I love how he treats this like any other guitar even though it is worth 300,000K
The Les Paul 1959 is the best Les Paul and possibly the best guitar ever made!!!!
I just love this guy!
I think you guys are selling this for less than it's worth. So great deal to anyone who buys it. Piece of history and literally one of a kind.
this guitar is probally worth over $900,000.00 by now in 2016. yes sir, i think u should go ahead and install emg bro. each to his own.
nah just about $8,599.00
Xavier Balzola it would be a travesty to mod a museum piece like this. These idiots don't under stand what "1959 sunburst les Paul" means.
@@fargeeks lol wut?
@@skullkrusher4418 even elvis presley reissiue of his guitar was worth over $80k
@@fargeeks And? What's your point?

$750.000??? Uff... not in this life. :(
I've seen some way cheaper than that but you'll still have to sell your house and car to get it ;)
Sunjay Patel In 1979 I had the chance to buy one for $6000. Instead I bought a 64 Strat for $650.
Just some history and perspective.

That 59 sounds decent but I would pop some EMGs in there
jclev99 what in god's name is wrong with you
I'd put in some generic pickups like dragonfire or wilkinsons . I bet they'll make the guitar sound better . Yup
