    Ben, I really wish more people got to enjoy your videos. The problem with not monetising your channel is that UA-cam doesn’t recommend it to nearly enough people. If you could change this (with say, ads only running at the start or the end of each video), I’m sure more people would get to enjoy your calm style of video making and photography. Yes, you’d need to modify your outro, but you could still maintain the claim that your videos are ‘clickbait-free’. If impacting the right people matters to you (and I’m sure it does), then this might allow you greater leverage to achieve that goal.

    • @BenHorne
      @BenHorne  Рік тому +12

      Hi Peter! I've done some experiments from time to time over the years, and based on my own findings, monetization status has only a small impact on whether UA-cam chooses to recommend that video to a larger audience. As an example I produced a video a couple years about about making accurate inkjet prints, and that's the only video I've monetized in recent years. The stats for that video are about the same as my other videos.
      What DOES seem to make a big difference is clickbait titles and thumbnails-and especially thumbnails with big faces with strange facial expressions. This is what UA-cam favors. It's when people combine the ads with the clickbait game that their channel will grow quickly, but from my standpoint, that's mostly because the ad income only further encourages the production of more clickbait-which the algorithm rewards.
      I've found that side-stepping the clickbait/ad game attracts a higher quality audience, allowing me to produce the sort of videos that are true to myself rather than trying to please an algorithm. The growth is slow yet sustainable, and often comes from word of mouth. Channels that grow rapidly often flame out because the creators must continue to play the clickbait/ad game. I certainly see myself as a tortoise in a world filled with hares. :-)

      @@BenHorne You make a lot of valid points there, Ben. Certainly, you know your audience better than anyone - you’ve been doing this longer than most. Like you, I hate how the many of the big-sub channels take a formulaic, ‘shouty’ approach to titles and thumbnails, but there are definitely exceptions - and I suspect there’s a happy medium between your version of ‘click-worthy’ and UA-cam’s. Attracting the *right* audience (vs ‘everyone and anyone’) is a worthy approach, and I respect and admire you for staying true to that. 👍

    Gorgeous and quiet. I like the pine needles in the snow. It somewhat resembles bird foot prints. It'll be refreshing to come back to this video during the summer heat. Thanks for sharing, Ben!

      Thanks as always Bryan! And the way things are going, summer will be here in no time. I'm still watching the weather for a nice sunny stretch before heading to Utah on my annual backpacking trip. The rain is sticking around for a while this year. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

    What a pleasant surprise it was to find that one, I had a new Ben Horne video to watch and that two, I had just enough cell signal to watch a low res version while curled up in my trailer in Yosemite Valley. Of course I had to watch again in 4k once back at home. Wonderful video. For what little it's worth, I prefer this slightly longer time format.

      Thanks Robert! Fall is still my first choice since there are so many options and with the elevation changes throughout the park, you'll find something new and interesting each day. Winter of course has some fantastic opportunities as well depending on the weather. And although it's still beautiful during the summer months, it's hot and crowded, which makes photography difficult at times. Definitely worth a visit though!

    The dancing patterns of the flowing water under the ice (~@9:10) - what a find! That would make for a nifty .gif (ie pipe in some "dad jazz" in the background🙂). Thanks for sharing!

      Thanks Darren! That sure was a fun little scene to find with the water flowing under the ice. I had to wait for some quiet moments without any cars driving by to really get the audio from it. The sounds were quite fun!

      Thanks Ash! Truth be told, I was still wiped out from my visit to Death Valley, and I didn't have the energy to balance photography with video on this trip. I debated whether I should record any video at all, but then decided to just let the camera record while I was working. Since I didn't have the commentary for each day like I often do, I wasn't really able to break it up into separate videos so I packaged it all in just a single video. Now that I'm rested and recharged, my spring backpacking trip will be back to my usual style with multiple videos. I'm watching the weather now and waiting for some storms to clear out before heading out. Hopefully within the next week or so. Thanks as always for watching and commenting Ash!

    Good to see s many films being exposed Ben and it seems that you have made changes to your presentation also. It would have been nice to see photos scanned digitally.
    Anyhow nice exposures and you seemed extra calm and happy. :)

    • @BenHorne
      @BenHorne  Рік тому

      Thanks Vishwas! Truth be told, after only recently returning from Death Valley, I was wiped out and I didn't have the energy to do my usual videos with all the commentary in the field. Instead, I just let the video camera roll while I was working and bundled all of those clips into a single video. I didn't have enough material to tell the story of the trip day by day. That's the main reason why I didn't show any of the scans or have the usual voiceovers. I'm now watching the weather for my upcoming spring trip, and I'll be back at it with the usual videos for that one. Thanks as always for watching and commenting Vishwas!

    Beautiful set of images Ben, always enjoy to see those amazing ice patterns. Don't get anything like that in The Netherlands. The second snow and pine needles image is my favorite, love the simplicity. But there is still so much to see, in those details!!

  • @mitchellmysliwiecphotography

    That was wonderful! The sound of the snow underfoot changed and especially that last day it sounded wet. The storms this year were crazy. Maybe those pine needles melting the snow or rock-in-ice will be contenders for a slot in the box set? I especially liked that scene near the end. Great work!

    • @BenHorne
      @BenHorne  Рік тому

      Thanks Mitch! You are very correct that the snow changed quite a bit from day to day. It was fascinating watching some of those scenes being created from one day to the next. I've done test prints on a few of those photos to see how they will do for the portfolio this year, but haven't made any big decisions yet. Hopefully I get some good stuff from my spring trip as well. Thanks as always for watching and commenting Mitch!

    wonderful 🙂
    living near the South Wales coast means we (ever more) rarely see heavy frosts and ice let alone snow fall. makes it all the more special when we get them I guess.
    the first stone in the ice image at 17:45 looks a bit special :-)

      That sounds a bit like my hometown where it's seldom ever cold enough for ice, and we rarely ever have any snow. It sure is nice to be able to visit winter, but I'm glad I don't live in a place where that's the norm. Thanks as always for watching and commenting!

    Ben, another fine outing overall. These days it is the only time ZNP is not overpopulated and tough to move around. That water traversing under the ice at 9:05 was very interesting to see. I have that same grey exposure disk. Works fine last a long time...😃....Looks like the ratio of ice pattern keepers was extremely high from the few quick glances of the images at the end of this video......😎

      Thanks Paul! It sure was nice to have the park mostly to myself. There was a weekend when things picked up a bit in the main canyon, but other than that I had a lot of flexibility which was fantastic. Although it never quite got as cold as I was hoping, there was certainly a lot of ice to work with which was nice. Perhaps next year I'll try to be there during a storm again, but it was nice to arrive in the wake of one on this visit.

      Thanks Brian! It sure was nice to visit Zion when it was so very quiet. If I had stayed in the park another couple days I would have been there for the monster snow event of the season, but I was already running low on energy and I was quite satisfied with the work I had done, so it was nice to head home before the freeways closed. :-) Thanks as always for watching and commenting!
