    Hi Ben, I am both very calm when watching your content and also very stressed at the same time. The calmness is virtue of your measured delivery. The stress is due to watching you walk past yet another (in my eyes anyway) epic composition. That Tree!, That Sandstone Wall!! Those Bushes!!! But I guess that's what makes photography so inclusive as there are compositions for everybody.

      That's the beauty of doing both photography and video on these trips. For those scenes that don't have good light or that I wasn't able to find a great solution for a composition, it's fun to show those subjects on video. So in that sense, it's not that I was oblivious to them and chose not to shoot them, more so that they caught my eye which is why I decided to show them in the video, but ruled out taking a photo at that point in time for one reason or another. I keep a small notebook and jot down subjects to pursue on future visits. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    I’ve said it before, but I admire Ben Horne and his work inordinately. The dedication to craft and his unsparing appraisal of his own work (maybe a little too unsparing; I personally thought the mud-ripples shot was pretty cool) are, as always, a real inspiration. Watching a real photographer at work makes me feel like what I am, a digital dilettante.

    Health and safety always comes first, especially when traveling alone. I am glad that nothing was broken. Expired film is so unpredictable but I have to admit that I still love the image of the mud ripples. I remember I once shot some expired Velvia on 4x5 and despite already giving it an extra 2 stops, it was still severely underexposed and the color change was "special" 😂 but because of this the images also had their own magic. Anyway, thank you for taking us along on another enjoyable trip to Zion :-)

      Thanks Martin! Even though it seems not long ago that I last visited Zion, I look forward to spending some more time there this winter with all the snow and ice. Thanks for watching!

    When you took your tumble I assume your camera gear was safely in your back pack. I did the exact same thing years ago out by checker board mesa. Was walking on steep slopes with a Yashica mat mounted on my tripod, stepped on some moss and bit the dust. Boom, no more Yashica mat, smashed! Learned my lesson, never walk around on slopes with a camera mounted on your tripod.

      Hi Ed! Thankfully when I took the tumble I had no camera gear with me at all. It was while scouting the maples not far from my truck that I took the spill, after which I returned to my truck and grabbed my camera to take the photo. The endorphins were doing their thing while I was composing that scene, and it was after they wore off later that evening that I realized I hadn't escaped without injury. So sorry to hear about the camera getting smashed on your trip! The dormant moss sure is slick as ice once it get a bit of moisture. I also pack my camera whenever I'm on the move. In addition to the camera getting damaged, not having two free hands is only a recipe for a more significant injury. Thanks for watching and commenting Ed!

    Zion is a magical place for sure but you make it looks more interesting. Amazing how you find your subjects on things or elements sometimes I don't pay attention. Thank you very much for the inspiration.

      Thanks Marcelo! That's the great thing about Zion. There are so many hidden places to wander, and so many wonderful subjects hidden in plain sight. Often times the best way of finding subjects is to wander without a camera. :-) Thanks for watching and commenting!

      Thanks as always Prashant! Thankfully in the past week or so I revisited the sheets of film for that photo and found I in fact have all the detail I need in a scan, so it's not as much of a lost cause as I had originally thought. It took a couple weeks or so for my wrist to come back to (mostly) normal, and now I can do pushups and lift weights like nothing ever happened, so that's good. Hopefully I won't have a repeat incident on my winter visit. :-) Thanks as always for watching and commenting!

      Thanks Travis! Yeah, it's those small things that we all take for granted when we're healthy. Turning the knobs on my geared head proved extremely difficult, especially since it really needs to be operated with both hands for even pressure. The following morning, I had a heck of a time trying to tear open food containers or coffee packets. I remembered I had a small clamp in my 4Runner that I was able to tighten on the package to open them one handed. I hoped to expose some black and white film in my last couple days, but I suppose that will have to wait until next time. Thanks as always for watching and commenting Travis!

    Dam I was waiting all week for that crack with the cactus and the stones, and you blew it!
    OK the film did but it was great to see the difference with the light as you set up both in the flat light then the beautiful warm you had described last week!
    Been a great series as you hinted at in the beginning, excluding your fall that cut your visit short, looking forward to the next visit or review
    Thanks for bringing us along.

    Hmm, horizontal? I was envisioning a vertical. Cactus image, of course. Just another example of how people see things differently. You mentioned considering hanging around a couple of more days (until your wrist said otherwise). I was under the impression that Zion was booked solid in the fall. Is it easy for you to extend your stay?
    Glad nothing was broken: photographer nor gear!

    • @BenHorne
      @BenHorne  Рік тому

      Hi Mike! Although a vertical composition could also work for the scene with the cactus, I felt the crack was such a dynamic element that it needed to be set against a calm backdrop. By going with a horizontal composition and visually leveling the image with the horizontal layers of sandstone on the right, my goal was to show enough calm negative space to help balance the visual dynamics of the crack. Hopefully that all makes sense. It truly is fascinating how different photographers will approach the same scene, and sometimes it's tough to put the thoughts behind it into words. When it comes to my stays in Zion, I always book the maximum number of days allowed which is 14 days, though the longest I've ever stayed has been about 11 days. I figure that approach gives me the most flexibility in case I need to spend a bit more time in the park.

    It's interesting to see what comes out of expired film; it can be a hit or miss. That's a bummer about your slip and injury, but I'm glad to hear it was not serious. Thank you Ben for sharing your fantastic series and photos of your adventures.

      I certainly learned my own personal limit when it comes to expired film. And although it caused me to miss a couple photos, the vast majority of them turned out just fine. With that limit in mind, I can now make sure I keep my film stock fresh. Thanks as always for watching and commenting Bryan!

    In addition to her composition tips and tasty scones, my wife has 40 years of medical experience, just something to keep in mind in case we're around. We both liked the crack and cactus, but are baffled we haven't seen it before. Overall, looks like a good collection of images despite the out-dated film. Perhaps we'll cross paths again at DV over the next 10 or so days.

    • @BenHorne
      @BenHorne  Рік тому

      I still have fond memories of eating the delicious scone while driving out of the campground on my final day after packing up camp. I was saving it for something special, and memories of that wonderful scone are forever etched into my memory. :-) It's great to know that she also has so much medical experience as well! And with regard to that cactus with the crack, I suspect you've walked past it at some point. It's in a canyon I know you've been up in the past. I'll be heading to DV very soon, and unless you've already left by the time I get there, it would be fun to cross paths again. Thanks as always for watching and commenting!

    Nice compositions as always. I liked the cactus image, the left corner space of the image might look a bit messy or that you have composed something (pine cone ?) to show up there ? Hope to see it again in the coming trips.
    Wish you come back with great images from Death Valley. I also wish you could get some wide landscape images.

    Ben, I'm really liking all these images. However, you're obviously seeing something with the expired film we may not be picking up here in the video. I have finally purged all my older outdated film with mixed results of either film issues or just missed exposure calls on my part. Just bought more E-100 in 120 & 4x5 as all Fuji stuff is buried these days.
    We've touched base on the need for carrying a satellite spot locator and your fall provides strong reasons for having that safety measure in place especially as you travel alone in the outback. Your fall event is quite timely as I took a "header" on Thursday at JTNP. It was in pitch dark and on a granite slope. Like you it was no big deal until the next morning. Now left knee and elbow has alerted me to the exact impact points..GROAN !...🥵

    • @BenHorne
      @BenHorne  Рік тому

      Hi Paul! It was a strange issue with the film, and not something easily noticed on first glance. Essentially the black border wasn't as black as it should be, and so the dark tones within the photo also weren't as dark as they should be. With the darkest tones a bit muddy and strange, it's tough to edit the photos in a natural way. The dark tones aren't very graceful if that makes sense. Thankfully the photos with plentiful bright tones were just fine. It's good to now know the limits of what I find to be acceptable with the expired film. So sorry to hear about the tumble you took in Joshua Tree! Ouch!!! It sounds like one of those moments where everything goes into slow motion. I hope you've recovered well enough in the time since leaving the comment!

    @alpharho_photo Рік тому

    Hi Ben. I'm glad your wrist is OK and that you recovered promptly. By the way, what is your means of communication if you run into trouble while on location? Are you always within cel phone coverage or do you use emergency transmitters or sat phone?

    • @BenHorne
      @BenHorne  Рік тому +1

      Thanks Luis! While in the field, I always have a Garmin inReach Mini satellite messenger clipped to a belt loop of my pants. It's a small gray unit so it doesn't stand out much, but you'll see it in all the videos. I use it to primarily keep in touch with my wife via text message, but it also has a SOS button just in case. Very few of the places I visit have a cell signal outside the campground area, so it's nice to be in constant contact via the satellite messenger. I'm a huge fan of them.
