Visiting the American Cemetery in Normandy was one of the most profound moments of my life. I am humbled by the sacrifice of these selfless young heroes.
My Dad took me there in the 1960s, he was very quiet looking at these headstones. As a former British paratrooper, he had great respect for the fallen Americans who came over to free Europe of tyranny.
it's beautiful, my uncle Leo is buried there. His plane was shot down July 12, 1944. 3 of his brothers (including my dad) were also in World War 2. Adolph, Walter and Edward. I can't imagine how my grandmother felt having 4 sons involved in that war. Heartbreaking I'm sure.
i was there yesterday. I wept for their sacrifice and the loss to the families of the lost; and then thanked them...I am here and I exist because of their sacrifice. Every American should see this memorial, it brings it all home.
I can't even begin to imagine what is was like for the parents of those 45 pairs of brothers. It would be hard enough losing one son, much less two of them at the same time. May they rest in peace.
Humble is the man who pays his respects, Humble is the man who serves to honor those, Humble is the man who can kneel and ask those be remembered, ...for their sacrifice is ultimate...for they have no more tomorrows.
As the 80th anniversary of D-DAY is today, we will never forget D-Day, and what these great heroes sacrificed. We can never truly thank these heroes enough for their sacrifice. RIP heroes.
i visited this when i was 5- 6 years old. even at that age I understood what all those crosses meant. and i couldnt stop crying. the scale of the place is breath taking like no other
I visited the cemetery with the Cub Scouts from Belgium. They walked from Pointe du Hoc to the American Cemetery. The Chapel is amazing and heart wrenching at the same time. There were many veterans walking the grounds. It was a humbling experience. 🇺🇸

As with all cemetaries from WW1 and WW2, British, French and American I was impressed by the care that is taken of the last resting place of these brave men. May they all rest in peace. Remembering particularly F/O Charles A Wambier and Capt Carl F Ekstrom, both of the 358th FS, both KIA December 30th 1943.

I have an ancestor buried there. My paternal grandparents named my dad after him, my father carrying his first name as his middle. I would like to visit and leave a penny to pay my respects but I do not know if that is ok. Would someone please let me know. Thank you!

I saw it in 1966, we were being kicked out by the french, only short 22 years after freeing them from the NAZI occupation. My dad wanted us to see all the dead that had died for the ungrateful french. just in case they never allowed visitors gain. anyway, it was peaceful then, we were the only ones there and the trees have really grown in 55 years. ill never step foot on French soil so help me god.

I am 50 years old but I will always remember and respect our fallen Heroes there in France...from Chicago, Illinois.
My wife and I visited there in 2019. All the headstones face west, towards home.

How come all the headstones are crosses? Did none of them belong to religions other than Christianity?
There are probably some Stars Of David as well..just a guess on my part…
