To the kids that HAD to watch this for school: Wait ten years after working a 9 to 5 job where people are drones and great ideas are few and far between. Then watch this again. Sorry for sounding like an old man...but I am.
As a grocery bagger this would not work, the reason why this would not work is because most bags are too heavy to hook onto a hook without ripping, there is not enough space on the cart for bags in general, the bottom does not have enough space for big items such as bags of dog food, water etc. By eliminating the area at the top of the basket near your hands you just eliminated where I would put your eggs, bread, chips, wine. The wheels were a good idea for putting the baskets back into place outside, but the problem is I do not see an area to hook the rope on for cart pusher in the parking lot. If they wanted a good design they would need to consult with someone who bags groceries, pushes carts, and customers, I do understand that they were under a time constraint.
The cart is stackable, it's just as space efficient as the "old" version. The baskets move around inside the store only. You leave those when you pack your stuff into bags - not necessarily plastic ones. You can hang the bags on the cart. However, this renders the cart not usable for people who usually steal these, making it less preferable for them.
I loved the new cart idea. I would love to see these actually in a store. Moreover I loved the way they went about the research, actually talking to "experts" that work, fix and use the products. That seems like it would be a great job.

I used to play this video as a training tool in a corporate setting. Great at first but it does your head in watching it every bloody week and nodding enthusiastically at the predictable participant responses.
I did watch this for high school, but I come back to it because holy crap the industrial design era that this represents to me is totally what I mean when I talk about “Epcot industrial design futurism”
What a jewel! The very first thing we did with the class on the very first day when I started in design school back in 2001 was watching this video. Great to stumble upon it and see it again.
Kinda. This cart wasn’t, but many of the ideas have been used elsewhere. IKEA most notably has carts with the sideways wheels and carts you can hang their yellow bags. Many grocery stores have doubt deck carts that are reminiscent of these, just no removable baskets. It’s less complicated but offers the same advantages. But also people hate change and I bet for this to gain traction, they would have had to been widely implemented. IKEA gets away from it because they force a very different shopping experience on their customers, so it’s unsurprising their customers would be open to the different cart styles.
Love this idea and IDEO. Would be nice to see REUSABLE shopping bags over plastic. :) As an eco blogger, that stuck out for me. But as a shopper, I can see this being a great option. I like the idea of scanning your own items as you put them in the cart. Then just pay the total at the check out. No line ups! Way to go IDEO!
watching this video more than a decade later but still amazed by the futuristic and the brilliant idea of the people of IDEO and intrigued that they created this stuff it suchha less time.
This company could give a rip about the product they are producing...don't you get that? Their methodology is what is being highlighted here. I would love to work for this company!
they failed when it comes to storing these carts. Usual Carts go into each other so they don't take to much space in the store. But still i like the idea.
The carts can be stacked. You take the baskets out of the cart at the checkout aisle, stack the baskets, hang your groceries on the cart in bags, take them to your car, then stack the carts.
Damn they showed this in my intro to Engineering class and that's why I went mechanical route. I just graduated in Dec 2021, struggling to find a fucking entry level job in the industry. Screw you abc for making this video
It really isn't immediately obvious that the frame (cart sans baskets) is stackable, but I guess it would be a terrible design otherwise. I suspect a cart like this would cause people to buy fewer items than one giant bucket. It would be interesting to study.
This shopping cart looks way too complicated than being intuitive. But it surely led the way to other shopping carts which evolved and you can find nowadays. Like some of the prototypes they presented.
i think in the future we will just scan products we want to buy and it goes into a computer system, and into a bag already in the trolley and we just swipe our card and pay. It takes out the time having to take stuff out the trolley onto a conveyer belt to be scanned. But i haven;t worked out how to guard against fraud, unless at the end you have to weigh it all. And if it matches up you can go.
PutinindaclubIbiza99 I'm sorry, I'm not buying any groceries online. Who knows how long those groceries have been on those shelf's. I want to see my groceries right there. That doesn't seem like a good idea to me.
anyone is forced to watch this for uni or highschool ?
LOL I need to watch it for my science assignment and I'm in 6th grade
haha, yes, Just started the design course...and I am looking for shared study materials playlist. What's your uni?
I was lol. But I'm glad I did, it was a good video.
Learned from a fellow student forced to watch. 🤓
For a second stage interview at a company...
"He's only been here for six years."
LOL. My thoughts exactly!
hahahah I was like that's a loooot of time dude. Glad to make it to one year nowadays before getting fired or the company collapsing.

We just got a shopping car like this one in Germany now. It’s called easy shopper and it is a great example that their idea actually works 👍🏼
11 year passed and Still most of us here are watching this for our assignment or homework, That makes sense,
Though it was forced, But enjoyed 😀
It's been 14 years ....and its my time to watch now

This Video is today 11 Years old, and i have not seen such a shopping cart yet, burned 50K within one Week with all that people - great :D
Man.. was about to say that.
Exactly! Cannot agree more
Yet 12 years later and I for one have only ever seen the old metal basket style carts.
IDEO is my dream company. I am a designer and this is the greatest company for me.
Did you ever get into IDEO

It's amazing that they did this in five days. Normally stuff like this takes months to develop and create.

I did watch this for high school, but I come back to it because holy crap the industrial design era that this represents to me is totally what I mean when I talk about “Epcot industrial design futurism”
Actually, I don't see Wholefoods or any other supermarkets use this kind of cart design today in CA.
Well, Cheer for the IDEO Homework!
OMG those scanners only came to the UK in 2012 so this thinking was ahead of its time.

I don't see why you couldn't bring your own bags if that's your thing. This design doesn't rob you of that opportunity.
watching this video more than a decade later but still amazed by the futuristic and the brilliant idea of the people of IDEO and intrigued that they created this stuff it suchha less time.

Take out the baskets, stack the baskets and push the carts into each other normally.
It really isn't the best cart design. All they did was throw a bunch of ideas together and call it a day.
@@spikedblade they had to call it a day, it was a 6-day challenge. I'm sure they spend months usually.
just amazing ideas and great video!!!

no way this was made like 12 years ago and we still need to watch this for homework smh
I have a DVD recording of this that I've had since I was about 10. I still never get bored of it!
cool! I'd give it a spin. plus it appears that it would weigh less than the standard steel carts, that's nice on the knees and back.
Since 2009 a cart for hand baskets was introduced at my local store, though it's got none of the other features, and it's for just one basket.
The carts can be stacked. You take the baskets out of the cart at the checkout aisle, stack the baskets, hang your groceries on the cart in bags, take them to your car, then stack the carts.
Those sideways turning wheels allow us to now drift shopping carts
