Ha ha I am one of those engineering teachers that assigned it. But I retired five years ago. Nice video, but I am surprised they haven't found something else that's more up to date.
yeah, IMO the biggest problem is the lack of the main basket. What happens when you buy items that aren't bagged (like milk), or you get items that are big (like a night stand or something). Also, the children would be unsafe according to most safety precautions, as they could easily lift the handle then fall out, nothing is locking them in.

Well, I wasn't impressed with the shopping cart. Neither were most stores apparently. So, for those of you taking courses, it's time to learn an important side of design: taking and giving criticism. Let's do a list of everything wrong to make our point! So first off, all four wheels turn. It's a neat idea, but I'd have to see it in use first. While this allows sideways movement, it also makes reorienting the cart harder since you can't provide leverage on fixed wheels. Again, interesting idea, but being unable to slide is a lesser issue than being unable to turn. Also the added complexity reduces long-term durability. We already know how carts with only two turning wheels suffer as they age. Next problem, the bottom storage is practically removed. Larger objects like dog food, boxes, toilet paper, and generally anything that can't fit into a full basket go there, however this shopping cart uses a "W" design which is not only weaker than the standard design, but less able to hold a variety of objects. Bagged or smaller objects would be left precariously perched on a bar that's improperly anchored. Actually, this goes nicely into the next problem: No large basket. First off, hooks are stupid. No one likes carrying the bags alone, and making it needlessly complicated for the bagger and customer simply to "defeat tyranny" is ridiculous. It’s art for the sake of art weakening a device with utilitarian origins. It also puts a lot stress on a small portion of the bags handles, and once again restricts what can be purchased. Do you want to buy milk? Well, you have to bag it, and no you can't use paper for that, and you better hope those bags are stronger than the current affair, because everyone knows those just NEVER break. Also, you could throw in the environmental impact of those plastic bags, although this was from the 90s, so they get a pass. Well, it reduces cart theft you say! Nope! If a person needs a cart, they're still taking it. Don't get me wrong, it's a beautiful selling point to say that even a homeless person (as an example) desperately looking for something to carry their possessions in wouldn't choose your crappy cart over the current standard, but in all truth they'll still use yours because at the end of the day they can use the hooks or baskets to carry their necessities until they find someplace with a decent cart. Also, kids will still find a way to make it into a go-cart. Well, you say, if you’re worried about baskets, why not use the smaller ones!?! Well, that's great, except you're once again left with a smaller holding area (limiting your max product size and what you can purchase with one cart as opposed to a single large basket that can hold a bag of dog food as easily as it can a bottle of coffee creamer, while still allowing for stacking), and you've added something else to steal! Because baskets are easy to fit in a car! Hence why you're not usually supposed to take them outside! Also, who else thinks it is a fantastic idea to leave your main cart behind, possibly with your kid or purse in the back, all the while lugging around a basket you didn't want in the first place because you chose to GET A CART. Also, if I’m just making a short jaunt away from the cart to pick out a few small goods, why would I need to carry the smaller basket that may already have items in it? I can just get the item and come back. Also, just a nitpick, one of the baskets appears to slide a little too far back. I get that it's likely to make up for the reduced carrying capacity, but it just makes it harder to unload your goods after. Alright, let's talk about those handles. Well, for one thing the redesign has removed the convenient rear basket for purses, wallets, and coupons (which was never perfect, but at least had a flap to try and hold in your stuff) all so that some people could fit a kid in there. The bar over the kid's head is also great, because every parent knows how fun that’s going to be, holding the child against the back while fighting to get the bar down from above. It's also easier for them to push up and slide out of without the parent's notice, and there's a noticeable lack of the standard cart seat belt. The cup holder was a nice idea, but it's on the handle that flips up. Ooh, speaking of the flip up, I didn't see any locking mechanism on the handle, so again large loads are at a disadvantage. I get the distinct image of people trying to push the cart, only to have that handle flip up constantly (I've used compacting Dollys with a similar design that did just that). It also has the problem of feeling too low (something to avoid for older customers) while also feeling top heavy. The wheels are all on the same plane front-back, making it feel inherently unstable, and again bad at turning. Ooh, almost forgot that scanner! Interesting idea, but all it can do is provide a single price scan for estimation, something that in-store price checkers, and also the clever invention of "Labels with numbers on them" have removed the need for. If it tries to tally everything, it will undoubtedly be left with errors as people mis-scan or forget, and while it may help with some estimations, in the end it just slows down the shopping experience, and raises the price of the cart from the simple metal frame. It also needs to be constantly updated to changing store prices, and maintained. It can't be used as an official scanner since people won't scan everything (theft is always an issue) and no one wants to lug around the weight of a measuring system like the current personal checkouts. Oh, and speaking of stealing, that thing is ridiculously easy to steal. I mean, I don't know how else to say it, it's just perfectly pocket sized. You could chain it, but that reduces the freedom of movement and is still easily cut. You could place it in the handle as was originally proposed, but then maintenance becomes even harder. Last thing to think about, it’s harder to store. Yes, they still could (with a slight redesign) slide into each-other like regular carts, but then you have to have another stack alongside with a far greater number baskets, with the 5 per cart shown here making the number of additional baskets absurd. If you try to go to a lower end of the curve, like 3 per cart, busy days and holidays will leave dozens of carts unusable because those hooks do jack if you don't have bags, which are part of checkout. Honestly, this feels like the 90s edition of Solar Roadways. Everybody thinks it’s cool until you realize that it’s cheaper, longer lasting, more durable, safer, and produces more energy to just build regular angled panels along the side of normal asphalt roads with (maybe) glowing reactive paint. Listen, I get that this was a 5 day challenge in the 90s, and the video was focused on teaching new workplace principles rather than good design, but this was….ugh. Let’s just say the cart was very distracting for me. And yes, I know, most of my complaints could be argued. My arguments don't account for all the factors since I just whipped this up after a first viewing, and I am by no means a professional cart maker (or professional anything), and even then some stores focused on selling smaller quantities of items (like Whole Paycheck) wouldn’t run into these issues, but the reason we have the carts we do is because it is the easiest design that fills the greatest number of requirements. When working to design something for large-scale general use, like a shopping cart, you can’t sacrifice certain generalized features (such as a large basket) for specialized features (such as modularity) that at best add situational benefit. You have to design it for the 90 year old grandmother as much as you do for the 20 year old college student, or the 1 year old passenger. A lot of the ideas are interesting, and could maybe be implemented in another way, but the cart itself- as it stands now- is not salvageable. Sorry if that comes across as a little overly critical.
+TheFirstObserver Some ideas are or were reality here in the netherlands. The thing that all four wheels turn is used on every shopping cart here and it works great for me. I can also remember we used to have the scanner. It was used exactly as they showed it in the video. You just scanned the product and when you left you payed with a computer system. There was a guy at the end that randomly checked if people didn't steal anything. You also couldn't steal the scanner because of the guy watching at the check out. I can see why they removed it though. But I agree. There must be a reason why every shopping cart doesn't look like this already right?
+freddie4321 It looks like the principal on building that cart would be more than for most carts. I don't buy the idea that it won't get stolen, people will steal cart just to ride them. It holds less volume. The bag hooks on there are going somewhat obsolete as grocery stores these days typically make you pay for bags or in some cases have even banned plastic bags.
I might be echoing the sentiments of many others here, but as a technical person deeply immersed in R&D, I found that video to be incredibly inspirational and enjoyable. It encapsulates the key ingredients for success within an innovation-driven environment!
Hey Comment Scavengers, to everyone watching this for homework or classwork, I recommend changing the Speed setting to 1.25 or 1.5, just to get done faster because this is a looong video. Other than that it's a good vid, would watch again, I rate 8/8 pretty great.
Uhhh...they legit predicted the Amazon store's process of purchasing groceries. Also, that cart looks awesome, however I feel that the bag holders would be destroyed from bumping and other sources of wear and tear.
For everyone saying it is old and out of date. The Engineering Design Process is still valid. Even the Amazon checklist ordered online was developed using Brainstorming, Prototyping, testing, teamwork, etc. The bones of the program are still relevant, if not the round glasses and mustache.

Was the design team's intention to merely sketch an idea and be done? Was the intention to come up with an idea, build it, and stop there? Or, was it it the design team's intention to design, build, and test an idea? What expectation(s) did the design have to meet before it would be considered a successful solution to the problem? In other words, what did the solution have to do? 3. What criteria did the solution have to meet? What limitations did the design team have to work with? Was there time constraint to get the project finished?

I've always wanted to get into Engineering, but I don't have the money to go to University. What kind of assignments are given based on this video? I've experienced an example of the deep dive at a manufacturing conference.
As a MBA student, I am here because my Entrepreneurship and Venture planning professor asked to watch this and make a report on design thinking in class tomorrow.
You all complaining should pay attention. Good designers use this method to create good products. If you think this is boring, you probably should reconsider the course you are taking, and probably even your career path. I'm not trying to be a jerk, but for real, if you are taking courses in college to be an engineer and think this is boring, design engineering is probably not for you. Look into other discipline of engineering, or worst case scenario a career path that best fit what you like.
Fun shopping cart design but haven't seen it anywhere. I'm thinking the new cart is still of value to thieves or homeless since they carry their loot or wordly possesions in bags. The creative process or lack thereof was the most fun part of the video. Maybe the cart needs to be something that is not a cart? Hmmmmm, I think I need to go and patent a new idea:).

It can't be used as an official scanner since people won't scan everything (theft is always an issue) and no one wants to lug around the weight of a measuring system like the current personal checkouts.
Oh, and speaking of stealing, that thing is ridiculously easy to steal. I mean, I don't know how else to say it, it's just perfectly pocket sized. You could chain it, but that reduces the freedom of movement and is still easily cut. You could place it in the handle as was originally proposed, but then maintenance becomes even harder.
Last thing to think about, it’s harder to store. Yes, they still could (with a slight redesign) slide into each-other like regular carts, but then you have to have another stack alongside with a far greater number baskets, with the 5 per cart shown here making the number of additional baskets absurd. If you try to go to a lower end of the curve, like 3 per cart, busy days and holidays will leave dozens of carts unusable because those hooks do jack if you don't have bags, which are part of checkout.
Honestly, this feels like the 90s edition of Solar Roadways. Everybody thinks it’s cool until you realize that it’s cheaper, longer lasting, more durable, safer, and produces more energy to just build regular angled panels along the side of normal asphalt roads with (maybe) glowing reactive paint.
Listen, I get that this was a 5 day challenge in the 90s, and the video was focused on teaching new workplace principles rather than good design, but this was….ugh. Let’s just say the cart was very distracting for me. And yes, I know, most of my complaints could be argued. My arguments don't account for all the factors since I just whipped this up after a first viewing, and I am by no means a professional cart maker (or professional anything), and even then some stores focused on selling smaller quantities of items (like Whole Paycheck) wouldn’t run into these issues, but the reason we have the carts we do is because it is the easiest design that fills the greatest number of requirements. When working to design something for large-scale general use, like a shopping cart, you can’t sacrifice certain generalized features (such as a large basket) for specialized features (such as modularity) that at best add situational benefit. You have to design it for the 90 year old grandmother as much as you do for the 20 year old college student, or the 1 year old passenger. A lot of the ideas are interesting, and could maybe be implemented in another way, but the cart itself- as it stands now- is not salvageable.

+TheFirstObserver Some ideas are or were reality here in the netherlands. The thing that all four wheels turn is used on every shopping cart here and it works great for me. I can also remember we used to have the scanner. It was used exactly as they showed it in the video. You just scanned the product and when you left you payed with a computer system. There was a guy at the end that randomly checked if people didn't steal anything. You also couldn't steal the scanner because of the guy watching at the check out. I can see why they removed it though.
But I agree. There must be a reason why every shopping cart doesn't look like this already right?
+freddie4321 It looks like the principal on building that cart would be more than for most carts. I don't buy the idea that it won't get stolen, people will steal cart just to ride them. It holds less volume. The bag hooks on there are going somewhat obsolete as grocery stores these days typically make you pay for bags or in some cases have even banned plastic bags.

For everyone saying it is old and out of date. The Engineering Design Process is still valid. Even the Amazon checklist ordered online was developed using Brainstorming, Prototyping, testing, teamwork, etc. The bones of the program are still relevant, if not the round glasses and mustache.

I love this cart!! The scanners are used at Stop and Shop stores (Massachusetts). I don't like that child seat thing (since I don't have children, if I had to babysit, the kid would slide right on out of it..what about a baby carriage...they didn't have anything for that.
*They need more women and minorities in the think tank/design groups at Ideo!! (at least back when they created this)

You all complaining should pay attention. Good designers use this method to create good products. If you think this is boring, you probably should reconsider the course you are taking, and probably even your career path. I'm not trying to be a jerk, but for real, if you are taking courses in college to be an engineer and think this is boring, design engineering is probably not for you. Look into other discipline of engineering, or worst case scenario a career path that best fit what you like.

Fun shopping cart design but haven't seen it anywhere. I'm thinking the new cart is still of value to thieves or homeless since they carry their loot or wordly possesions in bags. The creative process or lack thereof was the most fun part of the video. Maybe the cart needs to be something that is not a cart? Hmmmmm, I think I need to go and patent a new idea:).
