I dont know if you realized but gale could have picked a subclass and yes it can change playstyle alot.
For reference most classes get their subclasses at 2nd or 3rd level.

@Nythical yeah subclasses can change alot.
The default one for gale you have is evocation which makes him better at using blasting spells
For example for wizard theres
Abjuration - get a beefy damage absorption ability
Conjuration - teleports around
Divination - can reroll outcomes.
Enchantment - buffs/debuffs and charm enemies
Evocation - blasting wizard your allies don't get hurt by AOE spells and your damage is boosted some.
Necromancy - wizard that regains hp from killing and summon undead bonuses
Illusion - can change the enemy sight making it easy to hide.
Transmutation - can create potions and items. I don't recommend it for a character you want as part of the action. The abilites aren't combat focused they are good at items.
