Microtech did a bolster-actuated D/A (manual action with thumb disk or automatic action by pressing on the bolster) Terzuola ATCF more than a decade ago.
The ATCF is a serious side opening auto. Only issue I had was that thumb ramp made my larger hand feel a bit cramped with certain grips. It also kicked like a mule.
Lol happens every time!!!!!I was showing my dad a sng protech I bought and as soon as he fired it after I showed him......bam straight across the room!!!!
I got their TR3 but if money was no issue, I would have gotten that one. Either way, I'm a happy camper. I do like the pocket clip but you're right, it is not as practical. I'm going by looks.
I just got my TR3 fish scale Magnacut yesterday and it was $270 from Southern Edges. Maybe the maker gets a percentage of the price and that's why it's so expensive. I could buy a minty fresh working finish or possibly battle black Eklipse bowie for $475.
Thanks MC for the review. I wish I owned this knife. But why, oh why, after making the nicest (98.5% perfect OTS Auto) one would not put a deep carry, bidirectional, over/thru the end clip?! Based on current market, I'd expect to pay $400 (if they fixed the clip). Kudos to TriStateEDC for the loan.
I always like having the option for both deep carry and normal pocket clips but the awkward placement on this knife makes that difficult. Though to be honest if I bought this I would probably keep the normal clip on to make it easier to grab out of the pocket. Hopefully protech can make this design cheaper in the future… no way I’m paying that much especially when similarly spaced knives will be going for half the price.
Just got my TR4.3 yesterday in CPM D2! New favorite knife and holy SHIT it kicks like a pissed off bull. Shame that the ATCF has been literally out of stock since the day it was released. :/
Boy that price is out of line. I’ve always been happy with ProTech prices. They’re very competitive, especially when you factor in the disadvantages US manufacturers face relative to the Chinese. I sense the collaboration is responsible for the high price. Hopefully a one time aberration.
Wow, $480. I mean, the Magnacut is super cool, the design is super cool, the ivory micarta looks great, comes from a cool designer, but wow. I'd be comfortable spending $350 on this one. *EDIT* I finished typing that literally 5 seconds before you said $350 LOL.
I love Pro--Techs, but as soon as the scale has any item other than aluminum the price skyrockets. The price of a basic Godson nearly doubles with a small wood or leather inlay.
Knife makers with higher secondary market knives are taking some of this for themselves. If it was a $350 & you wanted it, you'd be paying $480++ anyway. Oh! You just mentioned CRK & Hinderer. Good luck finding a Hinderer at retail. It's $30 more than a CRK PJ at retail. If they're the best side autos on the planet, magnacut, and only 200 pieces, $480 would seem reasonable. You also can't really call something way overpriced when it sold out that quickly. I scored an enthusiast Facebook limited, #10/50. It's worth it to me.
I literally just bought a Hinderer for my 90k giveaway. Full price, right off the website. No special treatment from Rick. It was too easy. I absolutely can call it overpriced. Please be seated.
@@metal_complex you think I watch your videos standing up? Personally, with the existence of the 0562ti, Hinderers are overpriced. I still want one. I'm just waiting for it to be too easy for me.
@@jonnypescado1 it already is. You need to be following Hinderer and the major retailers on various social media. It doesn't take much to know when/where drops are happening. The reason you can't get one is because you're waiting for it to fall in your lap. The 0562 was the same or better than the XM back in 2013/2014, but with all the upgrades and improvements to the XM over the years, the 0562 just doesn't measure up anymore.
I know... it's sooo fugly, that the knife design is legendary. One of, if not the first, Tactical Folder. The guy sells versions of the ATCF for thousands of $$$$ & has been doing so for decades....
Steel cost are 30% up from last year, not to mention impending gas price hike and all the aftermaths of the recent events. Brace yourself, "overpriced " is going to be the norm.
@@metal_complex Sorry, I may have come across wrong. I don't think everything made in the U.S is over-priced, that's just my first thought, and I have to make sure and look really good at a product or company to change that feeling. The sad part is that is the first feeling I get, and I'm not alone. Same with the "cheap Chinese" feeling, there is a lot of quality stuff that comes from China, but I have to be wary at first glance.
No one is alone in any thought about anything. Our intuition is often shared by many, but wrong in the end. The gut feeling of something being "overpriced" is ever present. It's part of the journey. Eventually an unexpected good purchase will surprise you.
Then just buy a straight up authentic custom Terzuola ATCF... You'd be lucky to find a used basic ATCF for under $600.. IF you could find someone willing to part with a Microtech ATCF, I'm betting it'd go for ~$1,200-$1,500.. Easily. Those were so nice. I kick myself often for having sold mine.

I purchased this few weeks ago as my first protech and now I will be looking at getting more a great value for the money
As always, I love seeing premium knives like this. That being said, that is an absolutely insane amount of money.
Microtech did a bolster-actuated D/A (manual action with thumb disk or automatic action by pressing on the bolster) Terzuola ATCF more than a decade ago.
Sounds better. I regret getting my arch, not worth it at all
Tony at Microtech made an auto ATCF FYI So not the first time it is in automatic form
Huge protech fan and collector . I been kicking myself self for missing this one .
The ATCF is a serious side opening auto. Only issue I had was that thumb ramp made my larger hand feel a bit cramped with certain grips. It also kicked like a mule.
U didn’t like that it kicked out hard??
@CloudyShinobi as a lover of all things protech your fingers will be cramped just from bracing for impact. Still wouldn't want it any other way though
Lol happens every time!!!!!I was showing my dad a sng protech I bought and as soon as he fired it after I showed him......bam straight across the room!!!!
I really like the tuxedo look of this knife

The designer wouldn’t let protech make it with his “signature” clip it’s a Tezula clip and all his knives feature it.

I have a pro tip for the ProTech. You don’t want to be holding the button as you close the blade, or you’ll get blade rap.
What is blade rap

Love Tri-state!!!

That and general price increases. Seems like cost of manufacturing/distribution has hit knife companies hard.
If you’re broke just say so.
i really want to get the ultem protech looks so sweet
Looks more like a knife a mafioso from the 30s-60s would carry. Cool piece.
Great review, I love the "Tuxedo" colors. Like you said, it is a bit overpriced for my tastes and budget as well...

You forgot about the inlay
I love Pro--Techs, but as soon as the scale has any item other than aluminum the price skyrockets. The price of a basic Godson nearly doubles with a small wood or leather inlay.
The Magnacut blade steel here certainly isn’t helping the price either
Really nice. But, definitely something I wouldn't want to carry edc and use it to work.

I passed on this one due to the thumb ramp.
They should have numbered them!!!
I keep wanting one of these, but it's just too much to pay.
Aren’t all auto knives made in usa due to laws ?
Pretty sure that's a no. Some states may be more strict about importing them though. But I'm sure some sellers wouldn't care.
No. Tons of autos are foreign made
actually like hex more than torx :D
Oh man that pocket clip must’ve been inspired by a Picasso painting. Looks like some weirdly placed nose on a face. Thanks MC!
Tezula wouldn’t let them manufacture it unless it had his clip, called the protech Deep carry clips “ugly”
The pocket clip goes almost 3/4 of the way down the handle and is butt-fugly. Why? Way to screw up what would otherwise be an awesome knife.
Tezula makes every knife have that clip design…

you're not wrong. nice knife; but no way it's worth $500...
Show us on the doll where the price hurt you…
it's an overall body ache
Right in the pooper
Hate price whiners. Knife sold immediately sorry you don’t have a better job
@@getula100 I own knives that cost substantially more. Be seated.
Begrudgingly a fan.....the "unicorn horn" is outta place. What is the purpose/utility?...cause if it's for esthetics...BIG swing and miss.
Sad part is, when I hear "Made in the U.S.A." all I think of is over priced. It's not always the case, but more often than not.
Enjoy a mediocre knife world experience 👍

Too bad that it is an auto!
Be a lot sweeter if was not AUTO 👎
there are manual production atcf knives
