The first Vanilla orchid to be hand pollinated was by a 12 yr. old slave on the island of Reunion in the West Indies. A French colony, the plantation owners and botanists of the day did not know how to hand pollinate the flower. The young slave studied the plant and came up with the method we use today. His name is Edmund Albius. He never got compensation or freedom for his amazing discovery and died a slave. Because of him the West Indies have a booming Vanilla trade.
Hey there, just wanted to let you know that you don’t have to destroy the bloom to self-pollinate... Just use a D-3-3.25MM (small size) crochet hook. Gently insert the hook into the top of the bloom opening and slide it away from you to up and behind the rostellum, then gently slide the hook back towards you and the anther lifts up by itself and the rostellum folds under the anther (which is where the pollen is). Then just hold the anther in place with your finger for a few seconds, then let go and the bloom should be pollinated and not destroyed. At least that’s what I do. Best of luck!
@ Ann Kobilis : Good day An , You make me very curious about your way of pollinating vanilla flowers with a crochet pin without destroying the flower . I've never heard or seen this on the internet. I don't quite understand your method. Do you have photos, film or drawing of that or website? You would do me (and presumably many other people) a great favor to clarify this even further. Thank you very much ! Greetings from Belgium! Lily-Anne
I figured out this method myself because I didn’t want to split and destroy the flower when self-pollinating. If you Google a diagram or drawing of the inside of a vanilla bean bloom, and familiarize yourself with the names of each part of the bloom, then it will completely make sense the way I detailed the procedure. The crochet hook has a blunted end, so it does not harm the inside of the bloom when I gently insert it. It is such a simple procedure and only takes a few seconds to do. 😃
Have 3 vanilla orchids in a 12 inch pot growing up a ceder wood post six foot tall. Three years old looks great, just waiting for blooms. It's a great conversation plant, because people are amazed when I tell them that vanilla comes from a orchid.

MY Orchid Adventures I haven’t any at the moment. I grow rice, but the markets dropped out. So I’m looking at what else to grow. Vanilla beans sounds good. So I rather grow the best return. I will keep in touch if this ever gets off the ground.
@@taffythegreat1986 Oh okay. The only issue with the vanilla is that it is so labor intensive and it does take a lot of work to get it to the point of having the bean ready for sale. Just something to keep in mind.
Thank you! I water mine once a day or once every other day. It is kept outdoors and we have high moisture and humidity in my garden area. This is a plant that needs high humidity if it doesn’t get it the roots will dry out and die and the plant will suffer. So depending on your area will determine how often you would have to water.
I dunno if you know this but even though both flowers are male and female but you have to cross pollinate or it will stall. It’s another reason it can be difficult to produce💚
That’s actually the first I’ve heard of that. All the videos that I have seen even of the vanilla farms pollinating and producing vanilla never mention or have shown that. I’ll research further and see if I can find evidence of that.
MY Orchid Adventures that’s what i’ve heard whenever i look up vanilla propagation or what have you. I have vines on their way and I’m so excited to yield a harvest!☺️
one piece of constructive criticism: it is ok to have a second or two, here and there, without dialog. just silence... i have been noticing a fatiguing trend of "infomercialization" in regards to YT video production. it's not necessary, and it is not adding value in any way. it can be overwhelming. cheers.
I do understand your point but please understand also we get so much constructive criticism with everyone trying to tell us how we should do our videos...it is impossible to please everyone. Do you have a UA-cam channel with many subscribers? If you do than you know exactly what I am talking about. You have to get to a point where you have to simply be satisfied with what you can do. I think the effort in why many of us use all the space we have to talk is because there is so much info to share and it is in effort to make our videos as short as possible as there are many that won’t even watch if the videos are too long. There are also many that hate down town and moments of silent. So the advise that I give to youtubers is make it your own and do what you are most comfortable with. I’ve listened to many advise over the years and even changed how I did some things on my channel...but only if there is benefit to gain on both ends. You are the first and only person that has brought this to my attention and I don’t believe it will make a massive difference one way or the other to be honest with you. But thanks for sharing your input.

HA HA HA!!! Yes I have found that is the case with many of our orchids...patience is definitely key to growing and blooming them.
MY Orchid Adventures I’ll still have a go anyway cheers 👍👍👍
@@taffythegreat1986 Yes indeed! You never know until you try! What type do you have? Be sure to keep me posted on how it goes for you...you may have the magic vanilla touch! Best wishes and I will keep my fingers crossed that all goes well!
OH NO. OUR VANILLA ORCHID. IT'S BROKEN
I desperately want a vanilla plant but can’t find one anywhere :(
Taylor greenhouses. Has them
@@damomajanet The only problem is that I live in South Africa : (
Wow so nice vanilla.how many time your put water per day my darling?
Thank you! I water mine once a day or once every other day. It is kept outdoors and we have high moisture and humidity in my garden area. This is a plant that needs high humidity if it doesn’t get it the roots will dry out and die and the plant will suffer. So depending on your area will determine how often you would have to water.
😄😄, thanks for sharing from Malaysia.
MY Orchid Adventures yeah forget what i said about pollenating it. There’s a lot of conflicting info🤔
Many people have problems with the vestibular apparatus. Your camera turns, sharp zooms and someone felt bad ..
Hi the malipona bee is only endemic to Mexico
In the wizard of oz she wore red slippers lol
HA HA HA!!! I know!!! but that wicked witch must’ve hid them from me because I could not find them!!! LOL! 🤣😂🤣
MY Orchid Adventures that’s terrible lol 😂
Omg, stop spinning the camera. I'd love the content, but I get motion sickness and couldn't make it past the first minute and a half. I'm nauseous.

Can I have more of ur videos through WhatsApp
one piece of constructive criticism: it is ok to have a second or two, here and there, without dialog. just silence... i have been noticing a fatiguing trend of "infomercialization" in regards to YT video production. it's not necessary, and it is not adding value in any way. it can be overwhelming.
Why do u talk like a robot
Oh very very interesting and amazing I have desired Bloom
