I’m growing vanilla bean orchids inside under LED lights and they are doing great. I figured it out. I keep them in pots inside giant ziplock bags which keeps the humidity high. I’m growing them in Yacolt Washington near the volcano Mt. St. Helens.
@Ernie H I was backpacking near the mountain and Spirit Lake in August before the mountain blew. It was beautiful, hot and we would have been killed if the mountain had erupted while we were there. I’m glad I got to experience it before it erupted because it will never be like that again in my lifetime.
Seattle here; apartment dweller; looking to grow these and ginger together in an oversized (55 gal) aquarium space. Ginger in a potting soil pot; vanilla orchid in an orchid chip based pot. Likelihood of success?
@@MagesseT1 I live south of you in Yacolt Washington. I just started growing vanilla bean orchids and they are doing great. I put them in a large 5 gallon ziplock bag open just a bit to keep humidity up and the cuttings are growing like crazy. I bought 12 cuttings. New growth all over.
Hi I just purchased my vanilla orchid from same nursery and researching information about vanilla plant care I came across your channel. Thank you for the information.
Just saw a video about a girl used plastic chicken wire in a circle around a pole to allow to grow upwards, apparently it curls around, if you place inside if gets cold, she is in south Florida, she said that this is the way Philippinos grow in their country
What is PNG? I’m growing mine in pots under LED lights inside a giant ziplock bag with the zipper open a little bit to allow gas exchange. The cuttings I bought from Indonesia are growing like crazy and sending off new growth.
I'm going to a Local Orchid Grower nxt week, has this for $60. But I think I'm going buy online, I saw cutting, $20. He told me I would need to, have to get a greenhouse, which am going to get before purchasing. Now I'm going to go learn abt Saffron, I've never used it, but I might get the plant if I can find it lol
Saffron is really hard to grow in Australia as we dont have cold winters, so they generally turn are annuals instead of perennial. I hope you get a vanilla plant soon!
@@TheGardenersLife I wonder if you could grow it in pots and stick it in the fridge or freezer. Better yet if you can just dig it up like potatoes or onions to chill for the winter -- if that works you could store a lot of bulbs in a pretty small space.
@@LarimarP Growing well. I repotted it into a larger ceramic pot and mist it regularly (keeps the climbing roots hydrated) I tried spelling it during summer but no flowers yet. I bought another plant from bunnings about a year after this one but haven't repotted it yet and it seams to be growing slower.
I wondered why vanilla extract seemed expensive, then I saw a video of how it is grown in Madagascar, and the fact that it takes over a year, needs expert care, is only hand pollinated, is risky with some crops lost….wondered why it was so cheap.
I havent experienced this before. Are you sure it is mildew? First step is to properly identify what disease it is. It sounds like it could be either fungal or black rot. If from overwatering, then would suggest drying out soil or repotting, removing infected sections and applying fungicide. Wishing you the best of luck. Hoping to do an update video soon on my plant growth.
I stopped black fungal spots from appearing by doing two things: 1) first cleaning with peroxide then using a spray fungicide (I happen to have Garden Safe brand "Fungicide 3" with fungicide, miticide and insecticide for my fruit trees which are prone to black mold as well), then 2) increasing air circulation using USB-powered fans (small 2-3" PC cooling fans).
Thank you so much for the video. You mention your climate as being suitable for the vine, so what region of Aussie are you in? I'm back in N.Z now, just north of Auckland, so maybe not ideal for outdoor growing? I kind of wish I'd experimented with this in Derby or Milingimbi when I lived there. Cheers.
Aw sounds like that would have been so interesting. Thats okay there are many plants you can experiment in New Zealand with now. Im in New South Wales, the vine is still going strong. I should update on my tea and vanilla plants soon.
I have an idea for anyone who is growing vanilla beans since it takes a very long time for the process play some in your house even to control the temperature find out what temperature they can be in to make sure they won't die so maybe you can put some around your house if you can't or raise flower bed on your back porch or something so after the process is done and you get what you need for the time period of what you want it for you can possibly see if you can sell it at a farmers market for cheaper and you would make a wonderful prophet sorry about the typo then you'll have some for you and make money on the side because now vanilla beans are super crazy expensive they're like $18 where I'm at and I'm sure it varies from areas and state to state I'm just trying to help fellow people who love to cook or learning how to cook because let's face it prices are going to have a garden herbs add food I would get at the store and don't forget to find out the shelf life from when you pick it and either turn it into powder find out the shelf life on that and the shelf life on the liquid everything has a shelf lifeso make sure you look up the details so you know how long it's good for I'm a beginner and I've been progressing over the years
We had a plant/vine like that growing like a weed in a house mum rented when I was a kid in Ballina NSW. And, yeah, grew beans. Mum told us not to eat them because we didn't know what they were. She'd pick them and chuck them. All over everything. Ha, wouldn't it be funny if 🤣👍🏿🇦🇺
Hi 👋 ive had a really rough year 😔 its been hard but wanting to get back into videos. I am planning an update on the vanilla plant - yes, its still growing strong 💪 Thanks for everyones lovely comments. Ill be coming back soon 🥰
Nice video but if you're going to put a video with the title growing your own vanilla bean it should be about that and not about the history of the vanilla bean I'm just saying you wasted the entire video

Wow. . . Such a lengthy growth and harvest time. . . So grateful for vanilla 🙏🙏🌱

I’d be most interested in growing this and Cacow together.
Would you please offer suggestions for soil amendments for both?

I probably cant grow cacao in my home now as its quite small. Would love to if i had a farm. Ill do a video on soil for orchids 🙂

the music in the background was a little too much
Hi, do you know if this plant produces seeds? I have grow some small cacao from seeds and would love to do the same with vanilla
Yes, the vanilla pod has the seeds inside. It is difficult to grow from seed, though not impossible. People mostly use cuttings to propagate.
This was a great advice, thank you!
What do you do when the black dot mildew starts to appear
