The Traveling Wilburys were a ten day project started by ex-Beatle George Harrison and Tom Petty, who along with Bob Dylan, Roy Ordison and yes Jeff Lynne from ELO formed probably THE GREATEST Supergroup ever formed. Unfortunately Roy passed soon after this recording session, and now George and Tom have passed. Fortunately we still have Bob and Jeff, for now.
Wrong, the supergroup was co-founded by Harrison and Lynne, and it was those two who decided which other legends to invite to the band.
It was an accidental group that just happened when they were taking a guitar back I think to Tom Petty! And then they formed a group and had fun jammin
@@memorast That's not true, George and Jeff had previously discussed forming their own band, including who they'd want in it.
@@Cosmo-Kramer that's partly true. George needed to record a side B for his cloud 9 album and Jeff was going to meet with Roy to discuss producing a new album with him. George already had an outline for the song and wanted to record it. Since they were in LA, they called up Bob Dylan who had a recording studio in his house. George asked Jeff and Roy to come along, but remembered that he'd left his guitar at Tom Petty's. After grabbing his guitar, George asked Tom if he'd like to join and that's more or less how they got together.
@@elgenetiamzon1062 I'm well aware of that story (Petty remembers is very differently, FWIW). My point in correcting memorast was that he was making it sound like it had not been discussed prior to that day, when in fact George and Jeff had already privately discussed starting their own supergroup, including who they'd each want to invite into the band. George told Jeff that Dylan was his first choice, and Jeff responded that his ideal first choice would be Roy.
The Traveling Wilburys were a super group of musicians from different bands. They were all friends and hanging out and decided to start a band and jam.
First singer: George Harrison of The Beatles
Second singer: Roy Orbison
The blonde guy with the hat: Tom Petty
The guy with beard and sun glasses: Jeff Lynne of ELO
The guy with dark curly hair: Bob Dylan
These are 5 of the BIGGEST selling artists EVER.... friends, just hanging out and writing songs. They didn't want people to know it was them, the album came out and went flying up the charts before this video came out. AMAZING... the whole album is just amazing. Sadly, Roy died shortly after filming this video.
@@RobinT-treehugger When did they record End of the Line because Roy died before making that video.
@@ajruther67 "End of the Line" was recorded during the sessions for their first album. The video was made months later after the album was completed and released.
Literally legends, all of them.
@@ajruther67 the album was fully recorded and released, but they only had done 1 video when Roy died. That is why you hear his voice on all the songs but he is just an empty chair or just a guitar against the wall in each video.🥲
They stood in a circle because they are all equal in greatness
Their other hit song was End of the Line. Roy recorded the song with them but died before the music video was made so they honored his memory with a photo of him in the video during the part Roy sings and Roy's guitar sits in a rocking chair rocking as if Roy was sitting in it playing.
My favorite was Tweeter and the MonkeyMan, great storynsong
@@jlb6 You should check out the Headstones' cover of "Tweeter and the Monkey Man". It is very different from the original, with a driving, hard rock sound.
The greatest thing about them is that even though they were all legendary superstars in their own right, there were no egos, no fighting about who was the leader, etc. They just treated each other like their closest buddies and just had fun playing music together. Everyone respected each other as fellow artists and they even came up with pseudonyms as a group of half brothers who formed a band. Lefty (Roy), Otis (Jeff), Lucky (Bob), Nelson (George) and Charles T. (Tom).
The Willbury name came from an inside joke between Jeff and George concerning weird happenings with the recording equipment, so they said: "We'll bury them in the mix".
Such a beautiful song

The band came together in April 1988, when George Harrison was in Los Angeles to oversee the filming of his HandMade production. During a meal with Jeff Lynne and Roy Orbison, George Harrison asked Jeff Lynne to help him record the track and invited Roy Orbison to attend the session, which he then arranged to take place at Bob Dylan's garage studio in Malibu, CA since no professional studios were available at such short notice. Tom Petty's involvement came about when George Harrison went to retrieve his guitar from Tom Petty's house and invited him to attend.
In Tom Petty's recollection, George Harrison and Jeff Lynne then decided to realize their idea of forming a Wilburys band, and first invited him to join before phoning Bob Dylan, who also agreed to join. That night, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne and Tom Petty drove to Anaheim CA to see Roy Orbison perform at the Celebrity Theatre and recruited him for the group shortly before he went on stage. In Tom Petty's description, Roy Orbison performed an "unbelievable show", during which "we'd punch each other and go, 'He's in our band, too.' ... We were all so excited."
Working on a song that Harrison had recently started writing, the ensemble completed the track, which they titled "Handle with Care" after a label on a box in Dylan's garage.
"I think that guy with the glasses, he might be the guy from Electric Light Orchestra."
Yes, he is. Keep going...
The band members decided to create a full album together, Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1. Video footage of the creative process was later edited by Harrison into a promotional film for Warner Bros. staff, titled Whatever Wilbury Wilbury. The album was recorded primarily over a ten-day period in May 1988,[35] to allow for Dylan's limited availability as he prepared for the start of what became known as his Never Ending Tour and for Orbison's tour schedule.[38] These sessions were held in the house of Eurythmics member Dave Stewart, in Los Angeles.
The five band members sat in a circle playing acoustic guitars in Stewart's kitchen; once each song's basic track had been written and recorded there. The group recorded their vocals in another room, usually after dinner each night. Petty recalled that, as a friend but also an avowed fan of Dylan's, Harrison felt the need to clear the air on the first day by saying to him: "We know that you're Bob Dylan and everything, but we're going to just treat you and talk to you like we would anybody else." Dylan replied: "Well, great. Believe it or not, I'm in awe of you guys, and it's the same for me." While most of the songs had a primary composer, all of the band members were creative equals.
A Once In A Lifetime Gathering Of Legendary Music Icons...R.I.P. Roy,, George & Tom...Thanks For All You Gave Us..Gone But Definitely Not Forgotten.🙏❤
So much talent in this group, quite unbelievable really, between them these guys have sold nearly one billion albums !! A real pleasure to see this group of friends having fun together....🙂
Now that I'm older... every time I hear Roy singing in these reaction vids, he just reaches in and pulls out every longing, yearning fiber of emotion I built up in my life, and have got left. And believe me, I love Tom and George immensely, too... Tom's passing hurt me the most so far of all our lost artists. I've deep respect for Bob, and really enjoy revisiting the wonderful opus of work from Jeff and his Orchestra... takes me back to younger days, taking for granted the brilliance coming through our radios way back then.
That bridge sung by Roy Oribison keeps me crying.
Yes that is him, And all legends
The Wilburys are a super group, nothing but hugely successful singers and songwriters. Definitely worth checking them.out some more. Roy Orbison died between making this video, for the first single from the first album, and making the second video, for "The End Of The Line." They showed an empty rocking chair during his vocals.
just to be clear, the rockin' chair was not "empty", it held and honored Roy's guitar.
@@angusrocks939
And, Roy didn't die until after they recorded " End Of The Line " , he passed before the video came out!
In 1988 I was totally obsessed with Traveling Wilburys ❤ Especially Handle me with care🔥. RIP Tom Petty and George Harrison and Roy Orbison ❤🥰
Yes guys, you recognized a few of the guys in this supergroup. The first singer was George Harrison of the Beatles, then Roy Orbison followed by Tom Petty and Bob Dylan, then Jeff Lynne of ELO. All legends in their own right and together even more so.
Roy was an original member. In another video, they made, Roy was on the record, but died before the video was made. As a tribute, in the video, you see a rocking chair with a guitar in it rocking, when his singing part is being played. It's such a beautiful tribute to a wonderful man.
They already reacted to "End of the Line" but didn't catch that or know about it.
My man Roy Orbison!!! Look at the ears on that boy...❤❤ Thank you!
These 5 Major talents (great friends) happened to get together for a jam session and on a whim decided to make an album together = They brainstormed and wrote all of the songs and recorded them = Look the Wilburys up on UA-cam = a couple of great documentaries with these guys telling the story of how all happened to come together
I’m so excited to see you reacting to the Traveling Wilburys! Last week I dug out their 2 cd set and have been listening to them over and over again!
Thank you for your great reaction!
A absolute blinding song from this super group of top musicians and singers ,perfect 👌
Group of LEGENDS right there! Thank you Shawn and beautiful Mel.
Don't comment to often but just want you to know how much I appreciate and enjoy your reactions. You bring so much joy to so many people. You are both the best!
Quite simply the greatest SUPERGROUP ever ..
Thanks so much for your reaction to the Traveling Wilburys! It made my heart happy, especially when you recognized Roy Orbison. I grew up with his music and I’m a huge fan. 😊
Thank you for doing this reaction. It's so much fun to see all these guys together though it does give me a touch of melancholy to know that that only Jeff and Bob are still with us.
Well done Shawn, you are spot on. How far have you come since you started this journey? ❤🎶🔥
Shawn made me smile big when he recognized Jeff Lynne! I love these all the legends but I’m a huge ELO fan so for him to recognize one of my favs just made my day.
Where have you been? . You don't know the Traveling Wilburys? Now you will never forget.
You are still young and just learning about how much great music you missed out on.
Keep rocking
This is jamming with the best and yes they are all legends
So many greats now gone thankfully we have these video to see them forever!
Love this legendary super group.
This is an all-star gathering of friends who were all stars on their own. I Have their special edition collection.
Oh my goodness, yes. Roy Orbison. George Harrison (The Beatles) Jeff Lynn (ELO) Bob Dylan & Tom Petty. Collectively the Supergroup The Travelling Willburys
The biggest super-group in the history of music, easily!
The wall behind you is simply awesome.
Roy orbison was the best.. so cool and smooth
The moment you 2 realized this was the super of all super groups was beautiful.
Thanks for enjoying and loving this video... it's a musical museum
I'm not sure there could ever be another supergroup like this...perfect combination!!
They were all legends who formed a temporary band!
Haha you are bang on. The man with the glasses is Jeff Lynne of ELO. Oh yeah he was a gopher in Abbey Road Studios for yes The Beatles.....
One of my favorite songs by them ...the lyrics by all these genuis musicians just affect me in my soul ..for all of us that have been hurt 💔 handle with care . All these guys the goats of thier craft 👏
Legendary legends
I never get tired of hearing Mel announce herself :)
yes the guy in sun glasses and fro, is Jeff Lynne from ELO
I saw an interview with George Harrison, and the story behind the group goes something like this. Harrison was in LA to cut a single for the B side of a 45. He was dining out with Lynne, and asked where he could find a studio. Lynne said that Dylan had a home studio, and called Dylan to ask if Harrison could use it. Dylan said yes. Harrison needed to retrieve his guitar at Petty's home. When they went to pick up the guitar, Orbison might have been there. Anyway, they all went to Dylan's, and decided to jam together, and this song was the result. They don't know what to name the song, but there was a box in Dylan's garage that had "Handle With Care" printed on it.
Shawn & Mel, great reaction!! Next up, their "Heading for the Light" !!!
The group is Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison and Tom Petty. Roy died before the video of "End Of The Line" was created, which you reacted to.
I STILL can't get over that they STILL don't recognize GEORGE HARRISON, or even realize that he was one of the BEATLES, and there is a PHOTO of the BEATLES on the WALL BEHIND THEM. PLUS they reacted to "END OF THE LINE" awhile ago and STILL didn't recognize George and the others, even though people commented below "End of the Line" telling them WHO every one was....that makes me wonder if they even READ the comments. If they HAD, they would have recognized everyone in "Handle With Care." It's sad
@@patticrichton1135 I'm not sure they read the comments. I don't see where they responded to anyone. I'm not sure why they would say 'tell us in the comments'.
"Handle me... WITH PRAYER!"
Roy was stoked to be a member as he'd been a solo act most his career. The album went platinum before he died, so he went out on top.
Yes, Roy Orbison was a founding member of The Wilburys (the oldest brother, according to the "myth'), but he died soon after the filming of this video. In the video for "End of the LIne" he's represented by an empty rocking chair. His passing meant there would never be a live performance by The Wilburys.
Yes,yes,yes... Legendary ..
Ohh the good ol days 😉🤪😎💯
The Band was formed by Jeff Lynn of ELO , the main Singer was George Harrison (The Beatles) Tom Petty and Bob Dylan.
No, it started with George Harrison and Jeff Lynn. Look it up
@@patticrichton1135 OK
COME ON, GUYS.
It would have been so much fun to see you GOOGLE "The Travelling Wilburys" and THEN see your reaction as each of the Five Superstars was revealed.
Firstly a member of the biggest Band and top-selling Artists of ALL TIME=The Beatles and that was George Harrison then Roy, as you rightly said, then Jeff Lynne and you were correct again and then BOB DYLAN and TOM PETTY. It would have taken 30 seconds and the look of surprise would have been great but, maybe, next time...
All legends!
A favourite!
Another good song by them is called The End of the Line.
They already reacted to it.
@@patticrichton1135 Thanks. I'm surprised, because they gave the impression they didn't know the Travelling Wilburys and hadn't come across them before.
@@heliotropezzz333 They mostly just focused on the lyrics and the songs messaging. I don’t think they realized….
“I was having dinner with Jeff Lynne, he was having dinner with Roy Orbison and I said to Jeff ‘do you feel like coming along’ and he said ‘sure’. Roy Orbison said ‘well if you do something give me a call’. I went round to Tom Petty’s house to pick up my guitar which was at his house and he said ‘Oh I was wondering what I was going to do tomorrow’. And the meantime we were, with such short notice, I didn’t know of any studio that I could find that quickly. So I called Bob and he said ‘sure come on over’.” - George Harrison on the forming of the Traveling Wilburys
Golden. Thank you
It was beautiful to hear this song again. It's been years. It was so nice to see all these veteran performers come together and just have some fun with the music together. I really miss Tom Petty, he was a real favorite of mine. They made a great group.
Yes, Roy Orbison was a member of The Traveling Wilburys (although they went on to record a second album together after his death). Check out "Not Alone Anymore" for the Roy-est Wilburys song.
You two are incredible, you reacted to this great song! It's fun to discover your videos. greetings from Germany
The Traveling Wiburys were a super group of musical giants put together by Jeff Lynne the lead singer of ELO "The Electric Light Orchestra " the band mates were George Harrison of "The Beatles" Roy Orbison, Tom Petty of "Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers and Bob Dylan. Their only record came out in 1988 and not to long after that the great Roy Orbison passed away.
they recorded TWO albums together "Traveling Wilburys" and "TRAVELING WILBURYS 'VOL. 3 (even though it was really the SECOND album and LAST Wilburys album, they called it "VOL. 3" as a JOKE.
Lynne and Harrison co-founded the group.
Love Harrison!!!

sending you both much love and respect from england
Yep, probably the biggest ever super group_ George Harrison(The Beatles), Jeff Lynn(ELO), Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan & Tom Petty.
The band formed by accident, Jeff Lynn was a friend of George Harrison helping George produce latest album, they needed to record something at short notice but needed a studio, Jeff was friends with Tom Petty and knew he had a studio at his house. So Jeff & George went to Tom's house, at Tom's house one of Tom's friends was just hanging out, Bob Dylan. The 4 of them started jamming together plating some of the songs Jeff & George had been working on. One of them suggested they needed a different vocal, Bob suggested Roy Orbison who was a friend of his. So they called Roy who popped down to Tom's house and joined them and the Wilburys were formed.
there is an entire VIDEO here on YOU TUBE, about the MAKING OF THE TRAVELING WILBURYS. It's easy to find and will explain everything
Definitely the biggest
Basically right, but according to George Harrison, he and Jeff were having lunch with Roy when George told Jeff he had to pick up a guitar at Tom Petty's house and asked if he wanted to come along and Roy said "if you guys do anything give me a call." When they got to Tom's house George mentioned Jeff was going to help him finish a song and Tom said "Oh, I was wondering what I was going to do tomorrow." And it was such short notice that they couldn't get a studio, so George called Bob Dylan to use his studio and he told them yes, come on over.
George and Jeff were in Dylan's garage when George spotted a box stamped HANDLE WITH CARE and they started writing the song. George decided it would be crazy to have all those guys there and not have them on the recording, so he invited Tom, Bob, and Roy to join in. And he specifically wrote the chorus for Roy to sing.
But some of the details seem slightly different in Jeff Lynne's memory of how they started too.
Bob Dylan is one of my favorite artists also known as the greatest American poet Bob Dylan's (tambourine man) is my favorite lyrically
The traveling Wilburys are Jeff Lynn(ELO), Bob Dylan, George Harrison(The Beatles), Roy Orbison (who passed away before the second album was released) and Tom Petty.
the members are/were: roy orbison; george harrison; tom petty; bob dylan; and jeff lynne. the conceit behind the formation of the band was that they were the sons of the same father by different mothers.
These guys did this as a side project during spare time, only doing 2 albums. They were former Beatle George Harrison, Jeff Lynn founder and front man of ELO, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, and the legendary Roy Orbison.
He was a part of them when he past away they put his guitar on chair he was still a part of them
Members are George Harrison of the Beatles, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan and Jeff Beck from the Electric Light Orchestra (ELO)
Yes Shawn, you are correct... the Traveling Wilbury's are.... Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty, and last but NOT least George Harrison of....THE BEATLES. also, it's still hard to believe that,....ROY, TOM....and GEORGE are no longer with us. Keep listening.
You got it Shaun..great reaction…sensational group😀🥰
look forward to your videos. thanks.
George Harrison, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynne (ELO) all stars in their own right..and friends... got together to help George with a song, and it took off from there. All their songs are treasures . Drummer, Jim Keltner, very in demand session drummer and worked with George a lot, called himself a "Sidebury".
roy was in the wilburys, but he passed away during some of their recording sessions. also george harrison of the beatles and bob dylan along with tom petty
ROY ORBINSON was part of the band along with George Harrison, Bob Dillon and others. The band broke up after Roy passed away.
Roy Orbinson was part of the band! He died while he was recording with them of a heart attack!
Well they could have called them "The Rock and Roll All Stars" but that would kind of give it away. Travelling Wilburys adds a sense of Holy Crap I never knew...
George Harrison and Jeff Lynne who were working together on Harrison's Cloud Nine, put the group together. The understated multi instrumentalist and all round genius Jeff Lynne co produced the Wilbury's with Harrison.
1. Lynne co wrote a few songs and co produced Cloud Nine with Harrison, giving his best selling album since his debut and best selling single with Got my mind Set On You since My Sweet Lord.
2. Lynne co wrote and produced most of the songs on Full Moon Fever for Tom Petty, a 5m seller and Petty's best selling album with Wallflowers, and one of Petty's biggest single success Free Fallin'
3. Lynne produced and co wrote You Got It for Orbison giving him his last hit song and produced and co wrote on Orbison's Mystery Girl, his biggest selling studio album.
4. Though essentially a guitar driven band, Lynne played bass and any and all keyboard/piano parts on the Wilbury's and oversaw all of the vocal harmonies with George.!!
It IS Jeff Lynne from ELO and Roy Orbison was also inthe group

Some really great songs from a truly great band.
Don't know if you realised but in the video you watched a few weeks ago of The Travelling Wilburys singing "End Of The Line," features Roy Orbison singing one of the verses but he died shortly before the song was released. The guitar you see in the rocking chair in the video is his and was done as a tribute to him.
Anyway, love the videos so keep enjoying the music!
Two albums by this super duper group. Not a bad song in the lot...Enjoy!
The Traveling Wilburys were a rock supergroup from 1988, made up of Roy Orbison, George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, & Jeff Lynne. They had a lot of great songs. "End Of The Line", "Heading For The Light" "Tweeter & The Monkey Man', "Dirty World", "Last Night", "She's My Baby" etc. Sadly only 2 guys are now left from this group (Bob Dylan & Jeff Lynne).
Yes, the guy with the glasses is Jeff Lynne, vocalist for ELO. Then there is Roy Orbison , George Harrison, Tom Petty, and Bob Dylan, all greats in their own right. We have lost 3 of them. RIP Roy, George & Tom. xxx
I know it’s an old video. Roy Orbison (who passed away about the time the album came out) Tom Petty, Jeff Lynn (ELO), Bob Dylan, George Harrison (The Beatles). Really was about as big a classic rock super group as you could have.
READ THE COMMENTS and you would know all about them , you reacted to this legendary band in August !🥸👀👀👀🎼🎶🎸
Yes , it's Jeff Lynne from Electric Light Orchestra (ELO). The sound here is very very ELO
Rocking the Ravens hat!!!!
The names in the band Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison , Tom Petty, George Harrison and Jeff Lynn from ELO
For the longest time I tried to figure out who played the harmonica in this video. I could not find anyone credited. Bob Dylan and Tom Petty both play harmonica, I thought it was one of them. Watching the video this time, I noticed a pair of hands raising the harmonica. Based on their outfits, it was Roy Orbison!
A SUPERGROUP FOR THE AGES!!
Is this your first Wilburys reaction? Oh my! Great work recognizing Jeff Lynne! You have to react to End of the Line, and to really hear Roy take a lead, please give Not Alone Anymore a listen.
