- Many of us who had the 2nd gen Tacoma miss the grab handle for the driver in the 3rd gen Tacoma. This video shows the installation of an aftermarket grab handle.

At the time of this post, I've had the grab handle installed for about 3 weeks, and it has come in pretty handy. However, as said in the video the rough cuts and misalignment of the handle bother me. I've asked KTJO for a replacement, and unfortunately, it's difficult to get a response from them. They said they would process a replacement, and asked me for pictures. I've sent them pictures and requested multiple status updates, but haven't gotten a response. I hope this doesn't discourage anyone to buy from them because this product is absolutely what we Taco lovers have been wanting. If I get a response, I will absolutely update you guys.

PRO TIP: For those of you having issues threading in the top bolt, it's a minor alignment issue. On my 2019, the original bolt hole was angled too far upwards. To fix this, you can thread in one of the bolts, and then just apply gentle downward pressure to get the hold to angle slightly downwards to match the new handle. It's just thin sheet metal so it's somewhat pliable.
I have one in black for my 2023 TRD Sport. Waiting for warmer weather to install. The screw driver handle socket tool is brilliant. Need to find my set.
Makes life easier. Especially installing it mid-summer
Do you have a part number for the replacement clip that you got…and where store did you get from?
If you need this, you're better off getting a step ladder so you can get into your truck.
installed my driver's side grab handle in my 2020 tacoma couple months ago, same broken nutplate for me as well. went to tacoma screw and got MUCH better nutplates.
Wow. Yeah looks like it's definitely a problem with the company as a whole. Hope they clean it up.

Thanks for the video! Without it, I never would have discovered KTJO shorted me one of the bolts! I thought I had to use the original bolt, too. Rather than go through the hassle of contacting the company, I just purchased a bolt from my local hardware store. Once I had the 2nd bolt, the installation went off without a hitch. It did take a lot of patience to get the top hole to line up, but after that, no problems. Thanks again for the video!
Most definitely. Yeah that would have driven me crazy if I was trying to use the factory bolt and it wasn't long enough to catch the threads.
Thanks for your video! It is the best I've seen on the subject both in terms of sound & camera work. It took me an hour to install the grab handle (Tacoma 2020). That lower bolt was difficult but it did not break as yours did, although it slipped out of position so much that I had to tape it in place with blue masking tape. KTJO should have included a nut of the type that you purchased ... that clip on the backside of it is what is needed to firmly secure it in place & should have been included instead of the lame one that came with the kit. Thanks again!

My top bolt broke pain on the butt had to use vise grip had to go to the hardware store bad move buying it that hole don't line up.
I did this on my 2018 Tacoma. Had to really put lots of pressure on those to get them to go in. Good video.
Pressing in the bolt hard is how I broke the u-clip that came with it lol. Glad it worked for you.

No. The side air bag deploys along the top of the window lining. Thank you for the question
From the several videos Ive seen, clip breakage is common. If I decide to order this handle, Id definitely source my own clips like you did first. That extra tab on the clip really seems to help hold things during install.
Excellent point. Why go through the heartache of making a trip to the auto store while your already doing the install. Best to you.

I ordered one and after 6 month of waiting and no customer service or communication of any kind, I had to get PayPal to get me my money back. This is the worst company I have ever dealt with. Also from what I read it seems that the quality is poor. I finally bought a passenger OEM handle from Toyota for $60 and installed it on the drivers side. It looks OEM and it doesn't stick out like the after market one. Not that hard to do. BTW great video. I have to learn to do my videos without shaking so much.

After what I have seen and read about this company and their “customer support” not really feeling confident on this mod through them, so BravoFix, would like to know how easy/difficult it was to do the OEM passenger grab handle install to the driver’s side. Seems like at this point at least, that might be the route to go??
@@MichaelSmith-57 I don't know how handy your are with tools so I can't answer that for you. Take a look at the video I did installing the OEM $60 handle on the drivers side and you can see if you can do it. For me it wasn't that difficult because I like doing that can kind of stuff.

Is this part from Toyota? The reason I'm asking is because of the curtain airbag in that A-pillar. Will the air bag still deploy?
Not quite sure, but it looks like it should be able to in respect to where the airbag deploys out of. No, it's not from Toyota. I don't think Toyota makes a grab handle for the driver side at all.
You made a great video about a cool mod. I was getting tire of the 100 videos of people installing cup holder liners. I think the old T100s had duel grab handles.

Thank you. The clip breaking was kind of a blessing because the clip I bought seem to be better. I think I'll message them again about that replacement handle though.
@@jasonstacotrail4823 BTW, I read your comment on my last posting but somehow I couldn't reply back. I think it has something to do with Google. At any rate, there is an easy way of accessing all the buttons/switches below the radio console. You don't need to remove the arm rest and everything else just to get at them. I'll post the video hopefully by this weekend on the relocation of my AC power switch. Catch you later!

I bought this and had to return it, the same thing happened to me, I thought I had a fluke but KTJO would not replace it after many emails and I had to get my bank involved to even get a refund! Incredibly disappointed in the product as much as I really really wanted a drivers grab handle, I was willing to compromise without it.
It really doesn't make much of a difference. I mainly use it because I try to justify to myself that I made a good decision to keep it on 🤣🤣🤣

I have the same very slight misalignment with the driver side grab handle as well. I was thinking maybe to loosen the bolt and kinda move/nudge put some pressure on the handle until it lines up and sits flush, then tighten the bolt back up. Or just leave it as is for some time and see how much it bugs me. Thanks for the video bro.

The whole airbag thing scares me. What's it gonna do, throw the whole a piler at me if I get into a wreck? Too many unanswered questions but good video!
which bolt goes on top the long or short one one is 53 mm long the other is 59 mm long. ?
i bought one of these kits and have the same trouble you had and have ored new speed nut to replace the one that snaped off. mine also wigles and wonder if i put the wrong bolt in the wrong place. if you now where which bolt goes where that would be a big help..
I also found that getting the top bot to take in the thred holder was not easy becase the bolt is not tapered at the start of thred like the one i took out. you have to put it in flat and right on i found it helped to look over the top of the piller untill the bolt gets stared and ten put the piller in place.

Any thoughts on how the grab handle installation will affect the operation of the air bag?
My only thought is that I hope it doesn't affect it. It's only an assumption that Toyota has mirrored the airbag operation to the passenger side.
The companies quality control needs improvement, supply better clips, and check for flaws in product KTJO ! Good job pal, hope the outfit helped you out.

I believe all 3rd generation tacomas have the same form factor. So you should be able to get the same one and it'll fit. Be prepared for me to be wrong 😬. Also, I recommend you check out review videos on this brand before purchase.

Did your kit come with bolts that were identical? Because my two bolts are most certainly different from each other. About 1/8" difference in length and the threads take up around 40% of one bolt and 30% of the other bolt. I don't want to install it incorrectly.
I don't recall which bolt length goes where, but size up your kit's bolts to your existing bolt. One will be the same length and will go into the existing threaded hole.
The first thing you wanna do is disconnect the battery. So, your AIRBAG doesn't go off, lmaolololol
