Today I am welcoming a new guitar into the family!
Let me know if you'd like me to compare it up against a Les Paul, Tele Deluxe, SG, or something else!
Have a great weekend :)
Darrell Braun Guitar the gretches have a style of their own
Darrell Braun Guitar I think it would be nice if you do compare it to those 3.
Darrell Braun Guitar compare it to a super strat(Ibanez RG, Ibanez Prestige, etc).
Very, very nice looking and sounding. Darrell, would you be able to post a link to the model and year you have there? Is that custom or stock build? I wasn't seeing that bridge/tailpiece combo on any Duo Jets on their site, but I'm not super familiar with their lineup either. I prefer the look of the tailpiece you have vs. the 'V' tailpiece on the non-Bigsby equipped Duos. Again, I'm definitely not well acquainted with their lineups, so I could be overlooking something obvious in trying to find a match for what you're showing here.
I always appreciate your videos, whether its demos, comparisons, tips or teaching. Thanks for sharing!
I have never been a Gibson guy. Nothing against Gibson. I must say though I'm interested in the Gretsch. I would love to see how it sound in my DSL 40
I have a Gretsch Electromatic and love it, Gretsch has its own vibe and the quality is great.
You're such a wholesome man
thanks ❕😉
Japanese built Gretsch are far better built than the original US ones. Almost too high end ! Enjoy your new guitar. And yes after many years I even want a Gretsch. After seeing this walnut streamliner in a local guitar shop. I picked it up and quickly realised I loved it. I was kinda all shakey all over ! Soon I will have to get one !
Agreed. My 2012 is from the Narada, Japan plant, and the only word to describe it is "exquisite". Those TV Jones pups have a huge tonal range, and the natural (no-fx) sustain is the best I've ever heard. Heck of an instrument, right?
Omg, how GORGEOUS this thing is. Love Gretsch stuff, and this seems to be a cut above.
Sweet! There indeed is a world beyond Fender and Gibson! Congrats on the new axe, looks classy and sharp, the tones are amazing. You'll have lots of fun with it. Looking forward to the duels with the Tele and LP! New boss in town!
Nice Gretsch mate !! 6 months ago I bought my first. Gretsch, a hollow body G5126.....I've never been as impressed with a guitar I've bought as I am with my Gretsch. I really like it and I'd say that it's taken over as my favourite guitar.
It has the de Armond dynasonic single coil pickups as opposed to filtertrons but I also have a La Cabronita style tele and that has a set of TV Jones Classics and for me they have 1 of the nicest distorted tones of any pickup and I think that's why Gretsches like the Duo Jet and the ex ACDC guitarist Malcom Young's Gretsch sound so good....and that's because of that overdriven filtertron sound again inside of what is more or less a Les Paul type body, and I think that's the perfect recipe for a good rock guitar.
But whether it's rock or otherwise, I love most Gretsch guitars, solid or hollow.
Wow what a beautiful looking guitar and quite like the tone switch idea as well. Sounds great really smooth.
super cool, always wondered about this Gretsch guitar, thanks for showing and playing, it looks and sounds awesome!
Beautiful guitar! And they sound great! Looking forward to hearing more!
Love your UA-cam channel. Congrats on the album. Keep up the good work Darrell.
Thanks Anton!
That instrument just exudes class; great purchase! Ebony neck = Yes Yes.
I own two Gretsch guitars and I love them both. The Pro Jet (the entry-level version of your guitar) upgraded with TV Jones Classics and the Electromatic 5420T (big-box hollow-body w/Bigsby trem). While I have other single-cut and hollow-body guitars, none sound or play like a Gretsch. There's just something so very unique to them - something even a Duesenberg can't replicate.
Someone once told me that the Gretsch instruments can't do jazz or hard rock. With some Thomastik-Infield flatwound strings, my hollow-body is a jazz king. With the TV Jones Classics, my Pro Jet can handle AC/DC (the very definition of hard rock) all day long. These guitars may not be the most versatile, but they're not stuck in the jangly surf-country-rockabilly niche either. And they are just a joy to play.
Great comment John and yes to anyone who says Gretsch doesn't do hard rock, one word; Malcolm Young.
Cheers!
That baby is beautiful and sounds fantastic! Thanks for sharing.
nice guitar! congrats on the album. I'll definitely check it out. I'm working on something myself. 👍🎸🎼
Thanks Landon!
You can actually sing (unlike me) so I'll be looking forward to it!
I just bought a Gretsch and it's already my new favourite guitar!
Seeing a Gretsch in the hands of Darrel Braun is the most wonderful Friday the 13th present I've ever received.
😄 Thanks TD!
Happy New Guitar Day! Always anticipated with great excitement and one of the best days of the year! Slobber, slobber!
It Looks And Sounds Awesome Darrell, Thats One Fine Lady You Got There, Cheers
Congrats on the album just got it thru iTunes (well recorded), looking forward for more music and videos. Cheers!
Thanks so much!
I really appreciate the support 👍
Congrats on the new Grettsch. Love the tones and the ebony. Cool how the extras like the G make a big impression.
Thanks!
So many nice little touches like that ☺
Wow Darrell! That’s a beautiful piece you have there. I hope you make the most out of it and learn to play it to it’s limit! Great video as always!
Thanks so much Pablo!
Love the looks and sounds of Gretsh!
Sounds amazing! That tone switch really does the trick!
Great axe, top shelf pickups.
Different animal to a Les Paul.
These are used a lot in church.
Mainly used Clean with lots of delay &
Low overdrive sounds.
Wow 😃👏👏👏👏 Super cool! Really liked it too! Have a great weekend Darrell.
Thanks Beck!
In theory different from the Les Paul?!
Oh. It's its own league.
Welcome, to Jurassic Gretsch.
*Dun duna nuh nuh, dun nah nah, nuh nuh*
The Gretsch Duo Jet was introduced (as an "Electromatic") a year earlier than the Les Paul. In 1951.
It has virtually nothing in common with a Les Paul.
What a fantastic guitar! Amazing tones. Can’t wait for your in-depth review! ✌🏻🎸
Bought 4 years ago a Gretsch Electromatic 5420 in mint green and i am still in love with that great Gretsch sound!!!
Nice!
It's looking great. Happy for you Darrell! I suppose it would be a comparison against the single cuts you have. Traditional Les Paul, Ultimate Epiphone, Tele Deluxe. Throw in a curve ball entry if you wish. Haha! Cheers!
☺👍
Awesome guitar!! Sounds great!! I got my first Gretsch a little over a year ago and love it!!!! w00tz for that great Gretsch sound!!!
Nice guitar! Wow! I'm jealous......lol. The Gretsch sounds awesome! I will have to check out your album. Cheers!
That is the most beautiful electric I've ever seen. And it sounds like you can do some rockabilly with it. Congrats on the guitar and album. SDG.
Thanks so much Steve!
I think it's going to be a lot of fun!
SDG
I've always been more interested in the Gretsch semi hollow guitars, but now I really want a Duo Jet.
Nice!
Being a lifelong Beatles fan I have always considered getting a Duo Jet.
☺👍
Philtration first thing I thought of Gretsch= George Harrison(early)
Looks great!! Pure black. I had chance to try out this with Gibson Les Paul Traditional. Of course different vibes but I must say its easier to play than LP especially after 12th fret. Its more Jazzy, beautiful cleans but interestingly sounds really nice on heavy distortion as well
Sweet tone! And a beautiful guitar. Awesome!
I purchased a new Tenesee Rose as a gift for my son, I am still in awwe at the workmanship, got to be the best on the PLANET, you get what you pay for, Japanese craftsman are extraordinary ! ! !
I have this guitar's little brother - the ProJet. I love it! Great sound and awesome to play.
Awesome!
Ahh I always wanted to own a Gretsch my man! Really authentic and mysterious feeling to me!
Congratulations. That ebony fingerboard is so beautiful and inviting.
Congrats!!! I LOVE my Duo Jet! It took me 6 months to find a BLUE one - found a used one too MINT.
The .tone switch is nicknamed the Mud Switch. :-D Not everyone likes them, but I love mine. In the middle is tone full one like Tone dial at 10, Forward is tone half way down as if you had rolled it half way, and Back towards you is Tone off as if you had rolled it all the way down. Have Fun!!!
Thanks Julie!
I'm glad you found your perfect Duo Jet too!
I appreciate the "mud switch" info 👍
You are one of the best contributors to the guitar community on UA-cam. Regards from England.
Cool tones from that gretsch! It has a country vibe to me... The neck had more twang than I expected... Also sounds great driven!
That sounds fantastic & it's beautiful.
Your reviews are the best, thanks for the great videos you make 😁
Thanks Ricardo!
Wowww what a gorgeous piece... !
I can't even play the guitar, Darrell, but have been watching loads of these videos. Find it fascinating and you are excellent screen presence, sir!
Thanks Russ!
I'm glad you're a part of the channel, even if you don't play guitar...yet 😀
Ha ha! Yes, I am falling into wanting a guitar now (although all the ones I really like seem very expensive!)
Sounds like a Gretsch all the way for sure - love Japanese guitars!
Sweet guitar! I think a floating bridge would be a hassle, and I would want a bigsby personally, but still awesome! I’d love to own a Gretsch myself
Thanks!
Yeah, you have to use a little low adhesive painters tape to hold the bridge in place when changing strings - or just change them one at at time so the bridge doesn't move. Other than that, it's no hassle.
Bigsbys are pretty sweet though!
Awesome sound. Can’t wait to see you do a side by side with your Les Paul or even your SG. Congrats on the album, will definitely be checking it out.
Thanks Bill!
Beautiful black and silver scheme!!
And the sounds are even better!
Very cool!!
That thing sounds insane!
This guitar is very beautiful!
be careful...once you get into the fabulous world of Gretsch you may never truly go back to anything else! they are their own category of class and tone...it is addictive! Great Jet! and demo! love the way you repeat lines and toggle different ways - not just Neck then Both then Bridge
Thanks Jonathan!
I'll have to be careful with the Gretsch addiction! 😄
Wow! Beautiful baby! Congrats man!
Thanks Danilo!
its sounds really great! btw i love your shirt!
From Leo: Happy for you getting a new guitar. I have the lower price Electromatic Jet, but I love it. Yours is nicer. My controls are different, and I have a tone pot, but no master volume.
You always do the best gear reviews
Thanks man!
That is BEAUTIFUL ! Sounds great !
thats a great jazz tone on the 1st switch down
This one's Classy😄will go for Cherry Red or Sparkles range of I were to pick, tones and colours are what makes Gretsch so vibrant n exciting😍
True! They've got some seriously cool finishes. 👍
For no tone knob, that thing has a lot different sounds! Awesome looking guitar!
Hello Darrell. Watching your videos frequently. Found now this. I was an Ibanez guy, but since I own an Gretsch, it changed. Still playing the two Ibanez but the Gretsch is an other number for my Blues Sing- and Songwriting
very pretty. good gawd, I thought we were never gonna get to hear that thing! (sounds lovely)
Got your album, love it. I love my Gretsch, the thing that surprised me the most was how "shreddy" it is, oh and the tone... yum.
Thanks John!
I really appreciate you supporting the album!
i love the clean sound
Many players bash the 'mud' switch, but I find it very useful. I set my amp brighter than normal, then use the down position to bring back the bark and growl for PAF type sounds. When I need a bright country tone or sparkly clean I put the mud switch in the middle (bypass). Mud switch up is fat and amazing for solos.
Good to know!
I just bought a Gretsch Centre Block double cut! She’s a pretty one😍 yours is too! I’m also new to the Gretsch world.
Oooh nice!! Congratulations 👍
Which finish did you choose?
Just added your album my music to explore playlist. Love your videos. Keep it up
Thanks Lior!
Beautiful guitar. Ebony fretboards are unbeatable.
☺👍
Absolutely beautiful !
MAJORKOOOL!!!
Man these modern Gretsch guitars a fabulous. I have the PowerJet MIJ and the 2017 Electromatic g5420tg MIK. Both are amazing feeling and playing and on par with my 2010 USA Les paul.
Beautiful guitar Darrell
Holy Chet Atkins! I never find stuff like this used. Definitely has the Gretsch sound. Congratulations on the new album and guitar.
Thanks so much!
Darrell, you and your first class educational videos have to be the best on the web.
You deserve to be SIR Darrell for all of your hard work, grateful thanks and best wishes to you, thanks again 🎸 yeh.
Wow. Super cool.
I had a late 90's version of this guitar, it was a doublecut and an electromatic bir it had the mud switch like yours. I modified it heavily. Super a we esome guitars. I've since traded it for a telecaster but I'll get another duojet. Congratulations and enjoy it!
Thanks Bradford!
A Tele and a Duo Jet would be a pretty sweet combination!👍
Dude, love Gretsch, can’t wait for some videos with it.
😀👍
Congrats, very nice and Duo Jets are great. I had one with the Bigsby in the early 2000's I picked up when I went into Guitar Center just fro some strings and they had it half off brand new. Unfortunately had to sell it a few years later but hoping to add another one at some point.
Yeah! I'm late to the Gretsch party, but have been very pleasantly surprised ☺
Turd Ferguson that’s why I try not to buy so many strings at gc...I always end up with a mod guitar...😬😬😬
Wow! A Duo Jet with the filtertrons
sounds like a winner to me ! I'm used to Gibson, Epiphone recently got a telecastor from a friend who died from a heart attack, His mom wanted me to have it, he had wrote a lot of songs, well we wrote a lot and played for many years. Also he kept all his recordings But I'm just sort of getting into Gretsch and can't wait to get me one, sounds great man!
The looks of everything being machined and what have you.to me that's one of the big things that set Gretch and the rest of the builders apart. Solid looking kinda like a Rolls-Royce
😀👍
You are so lucky to have a diverse taste in guitars. I actually tried a Surf Green Gretsch Duo Jet (with Bigsby)at my local guitar store...but I need my Daphne Blue/Surf Green Strats, can't help it. Congratulations on your new guitar, she is a beauty! Why not a Bigsby Vibrato?(just curious, I don't think I can get one on a Strat, but I do like them). Love those TV Jones pups, beautiful tones...compare it to a Tele-Deluxe, very comparable guitars/tones.
A surf green duo jet would be gorgeous!
I was looking for a fixed tailpiece Gretsch for the looks and tuning stability ☺
You're gonna love the TV Jones pickups; I'm guessing that's an upgrade from the previous owner. I dropped a pair into my Gibson es-137 because it sounded too much like my Les Paul. It's like a whole new guitar! Great company, TV Jones.
Jim Howard hmm...wonder how a Strat would take those tv Jones(I think you have to extend cavities with router tho) I have a Star(t)caster that I Frakenmod every so often(best sound I got was hot rails n humbucker combo)
Great Video!! I Love the sound of a Gretchen!! They can cover all the bases of different music styles. A Les Paul sounds very good but it seems everyone has one and I like the little different sound of the Gretsch, a little more snappy in my opinion!! And looks are to kill for!! Please keep up the Good Work Sir!!!
Thanks Rick! Will do!
@@DarrellBraunGuitar The bridge hasn't the string height and intonation fine tuning capability as the Les Paul does! otherwise I luv the screw string gap adjustment part of it!
That guitar is so pleasing to thw eyes! Wish i had one :)
Gretsch sure make some cool stuff! Can't wait for a Gretsch vs Gibson video! :D
Yes, but what if I just wanted to get a dbg shirt like yours?
got some Beatles vibes with George Harrison rocking that guitar in the early days of the band.
MIJ = Cant go wrong ! Best guitars always, any brand counted in.
Ok first your playing is awesome loved it as well as your technique and the album cover...like half your face(a bit of a nod to the Beatles was it Meet the Beatles) and also like saying this is just part of me...there’s more. Kudos my friend.
Second wow I usually poo-poo technology because it seems all people do is text or Facebook(or ahem UA-cam...🤭) but for you to put out your music and reach an audience without heavy costly studio time(I think) and for me to be able to listen to it...wow. To use a Seinfeld quote(in his high pitched voice) “I’M BLOWN AWAY!!!”
Thanks SP!
I really appreciate you taking the time to check out the album ☺
I definitely agree with you; technology can open up some amazing doors, but also can be really unhealthy (social media) for us!
Always wanted a gretsch. Bought ajet club 5425 used. Upgraded electronics supposedly. Seymour Duncan at the bridge and tonerider vintage at the neck. I actually really like this guitar. It feels super nice. Been eyeballing a 2420. Just a beautiful guitar.
What about comparing it to an epiphone dot or something similar?
She's a beauty! Would love to own one :)
I was just at Guitar Center checking these out.
Darrell Braun Guitar It was yours I believe in a dark blue and white pickguard. Don’t remember if it had TV Jones pickups though. Probably too many switches for me.
cool guitar, great sound, well build guitar. thank you for review :)
What a beauty!
That bridge pickup is insane...and the neck pickup is twangy sick...yessss a real black ebony fretboard not just darkened...awesome all over
