I'm an overseas born Chinese, our family left China during the late 1800th, I got married with a cute Japanese Gal.
During courting, my father inlaw interview me and ask about what's my future plans, and my reply was, I try my hardest to take care of your daughters future and take care of the rest of my futures wife's family the best I can. Not anytime during the discussion did the inlaw mention anything about dowry. The only thing I provide during the ceremony was paying for the wedding funds, which wasn't bad.

When a product has significantly more demand (in this case, demand is males), then supply (in this case females) the traditional price, called a dowry, go's up. Greed is definitely a factor. I think some of these young women, who are insisting that any prospective husband be wealthy, are going to be disappointed when they discover that youth doesn't last forever.
As a chinese, everything is about money in our culture. We are being told to work hard to make lots of money so we can have better material life, it;'s all about saving face for our family and ancestors. When I got married some 20+ years ago, I already had a house and regular car,. I paid a dowry of $1500, which over several months, was returned to me in a surreptitious way. For example, my mom in law gifted me a pair of pants, and there in the pocket, I found $200. Same with shirts, baskets of fruits or food. I fixed my car and found that the bill already paid. I am so lucky I had a loving mom in law. She passed away some 10+ years ago. Today I am still happily married and growing old together.

I would not blame the women because let’s be real their culture heavily still prefer men and many baby girls were killed/sold/abandoned/possibly trafficked/given up to adoption. So of course the women will fight back and prioritize themselves because in a culture like that the men and even their own family aren’t reliable in protecting them and their potential daughters. My wife is Chinese from north central China. I told her flat out, none of this will happen. No dowry, no car, no house. Guess what? We have been together over 6 years now, happily married. The point is to actually refuse outrageous stuff like this and marry anyway. If a girl won't marry you for these reasons, toss her aside. Because in societies that traditionally didn't have retirement pension, sons took care of their parents while the daughters left the families. So a bride price is a way to offset the cost of raising a daughter without the return of her taking care of the aging parents. It is really simple, but the bride prices got inflated because 1) people could only have one child so if they had a daughter then they wouldn't have anyone to care for them in old age and 2) as a result of 1) people chose to have boys and killed off their daughters creating an imbalance. And when you have less of something, that something becomes more valuable because of its scarcity. They're just reaping what they sown.

Thank God my Chinese wife was against this. We discussed that and understood that although cultural tradition it is somewhat akin to buying a person, kinda freaking me out. Of course we help her parents when needed but we made it clear that any money was for our growing family and not a transaction.

Is there any wonder why the divorce rate and domestic violence in China is so high, if there is no mutual love and respect and the relationship is built on cash and material goods then it won't work. Something like this pertained in Southern Ireland, the eldest son would get the farm but the other siblings would leave and emigrate. Result a lot of male farmers but most of the females emigrated to the US and Britain where they often worked as nurses (I think at one stage the proportion of Irish nurses was very high in the NHS) leaving a lot of these farmers with no women to marry. It wasn't a dowry problem but more a factor that the women moved away.

I've always found the idea of dowries so interesting. In western culture, the dowry usually came with the wife. The point was that the bride-to-be would have funds to furnish a house, but it was the groom's responsibility to provide a house.... and I'm talking super, super old days here.
In my current country, western cultures don't practice it but african culture practice "labola" which is essentially a dowry to the bride-to-be's parents. The idea is to pay back the cost of raising the girl, sending her to school, etc. but recently the expectations have also been increasing.
It's interesting because different cultures have different ways. It seems that our current path is going to lead to more arranged marriages worldwide as people are not naturally pairing up much anymore.

Jokes aside, the problem of dowry has drastically reduced in India as the Government has made it a criminal offence to demand dowry. Probably, CPC can do the same.
Usually couples like such are very modern and don’t request for dowry. Most Indians and Chinese don’t marry interracially unless in a mixed/liberal environment, as they are traditional.

I'm Chinese American and went with my parents to visit their village. Match makers were frantic to pressure my parents to get me married. We were called "金 山 客", so the dowries and demands got ridicules. I always carry US $2.00 bills in my pocket. I said "Yes" and handed the mother a $2.00 bill. A riot started. Never heard so much cussing and swearing. The cabbie driving us away and my parents were crying from laughing so hard. Bad joke I guess.
