In the 80s Mr. T naturally gained the reputation of someone not to mess with as he is a certified badass due to his background as a bouncer but also because of this movie and the tv show The A-Team, where his characters initials of B.A. meant Bad Ass to the public. However, in real life he is one of the nicest and most respectful people you'd ever meet. He loves kids and did everything he could to help underprivileged kids make something of themselves. A genuine nice guy.

Actually, the character B.A. Baracus initials stood for his full name, Bosco Albert Baracus. But because of his temper, the other soldiers in his platoon would joke that his initials stood for “Bad Attitude” (not Bad Ass).
Sadly they never went into as much background detail with H.M. Murdock as they did with B.A. With Murdock the H.M. always stood for “Howling Mad”, although I’m fairly certain that they were also the initials for his legal given name as well (in my Star Trek: TNG/A-Team crossover fanfic “Family Tree” I wrote that it stood for “Howard Matthew”, because “Howard Matt” sounds a lot like “Howling Mad”).
      Anyway, just a little FYI.

Orginally Stallone wanted "Another One Bites the Dust" by Queen as the theme song for Rocky 3. But for whatever reason Queen refused permission to use it. So Stallone comissioned Survivor to write "Eye of the Tiger". The band was very inspired by the first 10 minutes of Rocky 3 that Stallone showed them. The rest is movie and music history... Without Queen and Stallone, "Eye of the Tiger" might never have been written.

To rationalize the wrestling match scene, the movie at least partially recognizes that wrestling is a staged spectacle, but Rocky at the beginning of the match commits a faux pas by jokingly telling Thunderlips (Hulk Hogan) that wrestling's "fake." So Thunderlips started "working stiff" on Rocky (hitting the other guy hard instead of pulling your punches) to teach him a lesson in respecting his profession. Apparently a lot of wrestlers even today would respond that way.

    • @danielgibson7948
      @danielgibson7948 2 роки тому +4

Working stiff on a guy is a normal way to give a "Receipt" to someone. Normally if someone messes up, especially in a dangerous way, they may get some hard knocks to tell them to "clam down and don't be wreckless". Most wrestlers understand that if they get beat up for real, they probably deserved it.

Funny thing is, Mr. T (Clubber Lang) is actually a really good guy in real life. Mr. T. is the actor that plays Clobber Lang. He (Mr. T) became a huge celebrity in the 1980s. A TV show that he acted in was the hit TV series "The A Team" which I watched as a kid. If I remember correctly, he entered a bouncer/doorman competition which, after winning that, started his career. He has done a lot of charity work throughout his life and was famous for the amount of gold chains he used to wear around his neck, but he sold them all because he thought it was an insult to god and, I believe, donated it all to charity. He is an amazing man who is definitely so much more than he appears to be.

In WRESTLING part of it is pure entertainment (scripted) and most of the time they motivate the crowd for sales. I recommend you watch "The Wrestler" starring Mickey Rourk to see the drama behind the sport/entertainment. Mr. T (Clubber Lang) brought his Mommy during the premiere of this movie. His mother walk out and told him she did not raise her child to be like this villain. Mr. T eventually redeemed himself in the hit TV show. A-Team. It's comedy action of wrongly accused former Vietnam soldiers who help various people in need .

9:41 The Rocky statue has an interesting history. It really did stand at the top of the Art Museum steps, and then the base, for some time, until the Philadelphia Art Commission decided that it was a “movie prop” and not “art,” and so didn’t belong there. So it got moved to the Spectrum in South Philadelphia for several years, got moved back to the top of the steps briefly for one of the sequels, then back to South Philly, then finally the city government gave in and (with great fanfare and a free showing of the original movie, as well as the first showing of the trailer for “Rocky Balboa,” the sixth movie) put it at the base of the steps, where it now gets a constant stream of tourists - who I still wish would actually go into the darn museum.
There are two other “original” copies of the statue struck from the same cast - one is in Boulder Colorado at the sculptor’s own studio, and the other was in San Diego for a while, then auctioned off to an anonymous bidder - who turned out to be Sylvester Stallone himself, of course. A Croatian artist actually made a copy of the statue, and it’s in the town of Žitište is Serbia.
Watching you reacting to the end fight reminds me: There’s a famous speech that Stallone gives in Rocky Balboa that translates his fighting style to a philosophy of life in general. You’ll probably see the whole thing, assuming you get to that movie, but the essential line is, “It’s not about how hard you can hit, it’s about how hard you can *get* hit, and keep moving forward.”

I'm reminded of one of my favorite quotes from Napoleon, by Apollo's speech, and Adrian's speech, to Rocky.
"The moral is to the physical as three to one."
What that means is, your _attitude_ is 3 times more important than your physical condition.
You can have an army that is under-supplied, worn-out from fighting, and/or traveling, with bad, or no food... but if they have high spirits and confidence, they can still win against a more powerful opponent who doesn't have such high spirits... or who is overconfident because, they, too know how over-matched you are...
What's that saying?... "your altitude is determined more by your attitude than by your aptitude"

You may not read this but if you do I wanted to stress that at that point in time when this movie came out back in 1982 I believe, some people still thought wrestling was real but the whole point of that scene was a charity event and that it was staged between the wrestler and the boxer. I see a lot of younger people watch that scene and not understand that context.

Apollo was never truly a villain in Rocky II. He acted the part of the villain while being interviewed on TV because he wanted to fight Rocky again and felt that that was the only way he could get Rocky to agree to the rematch. It was a calculated choice, not his true feelings.
Clubber Lang, on the other hand, was a terrible sportsman through and through. There’s a video on UA-cam explaining Clubber’s backstory. Apparently he had spent time in prison (for assault I think). While incarcerated, he took up boxing as a way of focusing his anger in a more positive manner. He ended up winning the prison championship. When he was paroled, he chose to go pro. His “strategy” (if you can call it that) was always to just throw haymakers until his opponent went down. With his extraordinary strength, that was usually enough to get the win.
Rocky’s strategy, up to this point, had always been to let his opponents hit him until they tired themselves out, then go in for the kill (real life former World Boxing Champion, Mahamid Ali, whom Apollo Creed was loosely based on, did something very similar which he called “Rope-A-Dope”). This CAN be a very good strategy, as you use more energy to successfully deliver a punch than you do when you swing and miss with your punches. It’s risky, but if you can absorb more punishment than your opponent can deliver before he gets tired, without getting knocked down/out, then you can trick your opponent into punching himself out. The reason it didn’t work on Clubber Lang in his first fight with Rocky was because he was just so damn strong he ended up delivering more punishment than what Rocky could take. In their rematch, for most of the first two rounds Clubber Lang was missing every punch. So later in the second round and in the beginning of the first round he was already getting tired. So when Rocky started letting him land his punches, they weren’t at full force anymore so he could Rope-A-Dope Clubber into burning up even more energy trying to knock him out. And THAT was when Rocky went on the offensive and knocked Clubber Lang out. It was a combination of Apollo’s strategy of making Clubber miss all of his punches and Rocky’s strategy of using the Rope-A-Dope method. Which is why it worked.

The reason why rocky is punching with his right hand is the style he's using, (note that in boxing the stance always has the dominant hand held back with the non dominant in front) Rocky's own style of boxing is swarmer, which the most often used punch is the uppercuts and the style he uses in the rematch is out-boxing which the primary punch is the jab (a straight punch delivered by the non dominant hand).

Rocky jabbing right IS using his left. The bulk of the strength of the punch comes from pushing your body into it by rotating into the swing. If you're squaring off with your right hand in front, you're setting up your left to have more power. You use your right hand to jab and jab to maintain spacing and probe for openings. When you find an opening, you can rotate into a straight left punch through, rotate around for an upercut, or rotate a little wider for the hook around. The straight punch generally has the most power, but if you can hook around or under his defense, you do it. Plus, a really strong uppercut or hook that makes solid contact with the temple or chin can knock you out right there no matter who you are

Also, it's kinda funny to see Duaffy get so confused about Rocky's match with Thunderlips. Thunderlips is not a boxer, he's a pro wrestler. Wrestling is different from boxing, and it's much more about theatrics. It's very much a mix of athletics and acting. I believe the reason Clubber Lang said Rocky was tailor made for him, was because Rocky was a straight ahead fighter, who really wasn't very good at avoiding being hit. Rocky was a bruiser who survived on his toughness. Problem was Clubber was a bigger version of Rocky and Clubber was very hungry for the title. Apollo trained Rocky into becoming a fitter and more agile fighter who could avoid punches and ware down his opponent. So the second fight Rocky was a much different fighter than in the first. Truth is I don't believe Rocky could beat Clubber as a straight forward bruiser, but as a skilled technical fighter Rocky was a much better fighter. Thank you for this great reaction video. 😃 😊

Rocky franchise is the only one where many of the movies start with a "Previously....on Rocky!" scene just so the audience can get caught up quickly in case they forgot what had already happened.

28:27 Sylvester Stallone (and thus Rocky Balboa) is left-handed. In boxing that means your strongest arm is to the rear and you jab punch with the other, the leading one. Those straight punches Rocky is throwing here are jabs, which are always thrown from the leading hand. A right-handed boxer like Apollo Creed jabs with his left.

  • @abraynor84
    @abraynor84 Рік тому

24:00 that's because it's a jab. The jab is the lead hand, aka the weak hand. Most punches are jabs. If you're right-handed, you would use your left hand. His left, aka a cross is the power and defensive hand as a southpaw. Now you can defend with your lead hand, but it's mainly offensive.

    Great reaction! 😊
This is one of my favorite Rocky movies. And it has my 3rd favorite training montage.
Mr. T is great as Clubber Lang.
One of my all-time favorite scenes in this movie is the talk between Rocky and Adrian on the beach.
And I love Apollo not only take over training Rocky after Mickey's death, but also became Rocky's best friend.
Be sure to continue on with the two "Creed" movies. And you'll find out who won that sparring match between Rocky and Apollo from the end of this movie.
Looking forward to your next reaction. 😊

"Don't tell me what you think !" ~ when Apollo yells this in Rocky's face ~ there's a special reason for it !
The favour Apollo wants from Rocky ~ as we now know ~ was the private fight between them two alone.
"Don't tell me what you think !" = he doesn't want to know what Rocky thinks while fighting ~ Apollo wants to beat Rocky for himself ~ no tricks ~ no nothing ~ just beat him with his own boxing abilities.

The exhibition against Thunderlips (played by real life Professional Wrestling Superstar Hulk Hogan) was only supposed to be a "show" fight. While Rocky was using boxing rules at first, Hogan was performing typical wrestling antics by throwing him around the ring and shoving the referee. Professional wrestling is mostly theater, but those fighters are real monsters, and they have a huge following in the USA. If you've ever seen a wrestling match, you would see that scene in a very different light.
BTW - The Rock (Dwayne Johnson) was also a professional wrestler early in his entertainment career.
The reason Apollo (Carl Weathers) seemed to be able to run so much faster than Rocky was because Weathers was a professional football player (Oakland Raiders) after a football career at San Diego State University. At the time Rocky 3 was filmed, Weathers (34) was still a SERIOUS athlete...so he had to (rumor has it) slow down for Stallone to beat him in a race.

There are two schools of boxing; the Rocky Marciano school, and the Mohammad Ali school.
When Roman style boxing first began, during the Roman republic, two men would "toe a line" facing each other. They would wrap strips of leather around their hands.
Then they would take turns punching one another, until one was forced to step back or was knocked down.
That's the Rocky Marciano school; you wade in, whale on your opponent, trading blows until one of you can't fight anymore.
The Mohammad Ali school was to dance around like a matador; keep your opponent enraged and on the attack. Only step in to provoke him and keep him swinging at you. Sometimes taking a bit of a beating while doing this.
Mohammad Ali even had a term for this tactic; "rope a dope"... let your opponent get you on the ropes, cover up, and let him wear himself out beating on you without really doing much damage to you.
Then, when your opponent is worn out from attacking you... you go in and finish him off.
I understand most modern people prefer the Mohammad Ali school; and it _is_ more entertaining.
Personally I prefer the original Roman style.
In the first movie, Apollo represented the Mohammad Ali school, and Rocky the Marciano school (he even had a poster of Marciano in his apartment).
Now, in this movie, they've chosen to reverse roles for Rocky.

To my mind Rocky's first fight with Lang was a replay of Rocky's first fight with Creed, except this time Rocky is the overconfident one who doesn't take training seriously.
Apollo brought him back to his roots in the street.
To a degree in the second fight Rocky emulated Ali's "rope a dope" strategy, where he covered up and let his opponent exhaust himself punching Ali to no great effect. Naturally they had to show Rocky suffering damage since this is a movie.
Either way, he wore Clubber out, then went to town. As you noted, he fought a lot more like Creed did in this fight.

I think Stallone should do a small little drama about what made Paulie the way he is. Watching the Rocky movies as much as have, I always figured something really bad happened to him. Maybe something happened to him in the war? (We see a photograph of him in uniform.) Maybe he and Rocky were boxing buddies when they were very young and something happened then? Maybe he was majorly screwed over by a friend? Maybe Rocky saw this and that why he feels sorry for Paulie and helps him so much. I feel like there is a story here that needs to be told.

Your reactions are such a joy to watch, THANK YOU! You nailed it in regards to Apollo -- he was the antagonist in the first two fights, but he was never the villain. Here's something to remember -- you will learn who won the third fight -- "the favor" -- if you continue to watch the rest of the series, including the "Creed" films. The winner of "the favor" fight will be revealed in the first "Creed" film. Again, thank you!

The match with Rocky and Thunderlips was an actual wrestling match, meaning a staged performance. Thunderlips was playing the badguy (the egotistical attitude, the dirty fighting, attacking offficials), so all that stuff went as planned. Back then, wrestling was still protected and treated as "real" so the movie didn't explicitly say the match was a work, but they did imply it with the two men being friendly afterward.

"Is this normal?" No its not normal but it does happen from time to time. There usually isn't police there but security personal and they don't really have the authority to do anything. What will happen is the athletic commission will hold a hearing afterwards to determine what action they should take. They can revoke your license to fight or just fine you. My roommate fought this guy and he had some bad blood with his trainer and after he won he slapped the guy in the face in the ring and everything went to hell and we all ran into the ring. Fortunately it didn't go farther than pushing and shoving but we did have to go before the athletic commission and we all got a warning.
