- In the realm of horror manga, no one is more well-known than Junji Ito. He has garnered a sizable fan base since his debut in the late 1980s. Over the years, some of his biggest works have also been made into live-action films or dramas. Junji Ito was born in the prefecture of Gifu in 1963, and began writing comics in 1987. His first manga contribution was acknowledged with an honorable mention from the Kazuo Umezu Prize, and that was only the beginning. “Tomie”, a manga series about a supernatural girl/entity named Tomie, that was suitably terrifying, was one of his earlier works. Ito is the author of several notable works, including “Gyo”, “Uzumaki”, “Cat Diary: Yon and Muu”, and a few others. Many of his short stories have been included in a few anthologies. One such collection is “Fragments of Horror”, which was translated by Viz in the United States. “Tomie” and “Uzumaki”, for example, have been transformed into films and television programs.
Junji Ito has his own set of tricks and tropes that he enjoys using. Aside from the obvious ones like Cosmic horror, and unfathomable supernatural power, Ito employs a variety of additional ways to communicate his terror. Some are subtle, while others are more obvious. The audience is kept on edge by a combination of body horror, scary surroundings, and an overall sense of unease. He truly is a master of horror, and today we will look at some of his most bizarre and horrifying monsters of all time. Put your seatbelts on because you're in for one hell of a ride.

I could be wrong, but I remember in the manga it said that after Hiroshi's parents saw the growing window they decided to move out of the house right away, so I assume they are safe.
Who the fuck wouldn't
That's correct. The narrator clearly doesn't really watch the episode thoroughly.
Ito did theorize it wasn't the woman who caused the house to become monstrous, but the previous inhabitants refused to let go of their sentimental nature to the house that became dangerous. Think about that, allowing the past to become the future.
@@stephanustheodorus3614 The episodes are whack.
Manga is absolutely elite, though.
That does not happen in the manga to my recollection; I refused to watch that horrible anime.
And despite all of this horror, Junji Ito is seen as a pleasant and upbeat person to interview and spend time with. Which I can’t tell if that is a good or bad thing lol
I’ve seen some videos from Viz Media where they have him react to other people’s art. He does not seem like the person who would make the stuff he does
@@adiosarisen8301 He seems like a total sweetheart.
A very chill guy and down to earth as well
I'd call it a charismaniac
@@adiosarisen8301 Bill Gaines, one of the writers of "Tales From The Crypt" comics was a chill guy too.
That's kinda scary actually...lol.
Gotta give mad respect to FUCHI. She's proof that you can be ugly, terrifying, a bloodthirsty monster and STILL be able to follow your dreams of having the job you want, be married, and have a child🤣😆
The spiral curse terrifies me, even though I don't have any other phobias. I'm cool with snakes, bugs, spiders and sharks. Also, I live in Australia, so I'm used to things that can kill you if you just step on them, but this is what freaks me out. The artwork is genuinely beautiful though. So much detail. The Hellstar also scares me. There's literally nothing you can do against something like that
I agree, it's hard to decide whether you'd rather suffer any fate that anybody suichi encounters ends up with, or suffer in maddening confusion and terror like suichi himself, truly a terrifying story
Ngl a Australian being scared scares me 😂
After reading alot of his stories first thing that came to mind was : " Is Junji Ito Ok?"
Heard he's nice in real life and his wife is a children's book author
Hopefully. He seems like a nice dude. There's a few UA-cam videos of him reacting to things like siren head
There are multiple interviews that show him as someone joyful and quite friendly, so... Maybe?
@@johnlawful2272 now that's what I call balance!!!
@@LordofSadFac and that's exactly why this question needs to be asked. Because it's the seemingly nice ones you gotta watch lol.
I love how Junji Ito introduces this central idea and evolves it until it completely overwhelms and dominates the entire world of the story. It’s truly genius how he is able to conjure these absurd yet breathtaking images. Uzumaki for example, started with the image of a spiral of a snail’s shell and at the end of the manga, there was an entire spiral world underneath our own, and reading that was truly admirable
It's not supernatural or anything, but "The Bully" would have to be one of the most terrifying to me that Junji Ito has done. It's very short yet scary.
I think scariest thing is that its possibly the most realistic one out of all the stories
I hate how underrated and overlooked The Bully is. Yes, there's no supernatural monsters or mystical oddities, but the realism shown in its premise alone is enough to make you feel true terror.
Not gonna lie The Bully made me nauseous. Cause I know somewhere that premise is really happening.
i agree its probably my favorite episode in the new adaption and one of my favorite chapters it like messes with you mentally
The bully isn’t really scary but I mean the story is realistic because it’s human nature for a unforgiving spouse to take it out on the child
That anime they made just didnt do his artwork justice, a lot of the uneasiness and weirdness from his stories come from his art, and it just doesnt show through in that anime imo. Compare the widow in the anime, compared to the manga. Its so much more insanely detailed and structured.
alot of his stories are very interesting. It's a shame that he mostly makes short stories because almost all of his short horror stories would be interesting if it was longer and we can deep dive more to the story. Alot of his short story endings are rushed. It's like counting up to 20 and when you reach 10, you straight up go to the number 20.
I think one of his short stories with the most perfect ending is The bully. Literally gave me chills than the supernatural, lovecraftian stuff that he makes because the bully's story actually happens in real life.
Some of his short stories are make up an even bigger story they also. It's just of you get a collection you may not get all of them. They work well as stand alone stories as well.
Because the people are more of set pieces, his stories are spectacle driven not character driven. Why do you think the characters are drawn nondescript. No flashy clothes, no fruit colored hair, no particular quirk. The forces within the plot don't revolve around the "protagonists" and work independently such as the concept of Spirals, a planet devouring being, a human shape size hole in the mountain. Heck even the so called recurring "characters" are acts more like spectacles rather than characters to drive the plot.
The Suichi stories are a whole set, there is Gyo, Uzumaki, Tomie, Ito did make Frankenstein into a manga and I believe the the Oshikiri story is also a multi-chapter one.
There is a lot of lovecraft elements in his work, so much so that many people say he copycat some aspects of his work. But I could fairly say that his work is not a copy cat of lovecraft but a love letter to him and he made it into his own style and flavor. After all greatness comes for previous predecessors shoulders.
Lovecraft was the father of existential / Cosmic horror, so of course Junji Ito's work resembles his. its impossible not to when you compare an example of a genre/subgenre to the works of the one who created said genre/subgenre.
Lovecraft is interesting in that (If I recall correctly) he stated in his will that his work became Public domain so other writers could play with the world he created and continue it.
It is because of this action we have so many Lovecraft inspired works the man opened up an entire literary universe for people to explore and expand upon.
(If I got any info wrong I blame my insomnia induced exhaustion and crappy memory )
i hate the whole idea of anything even being in the same genre is a copycat, remember pubg and fortnite?
@@wacky-physics7506 Agreed.
Uzumaki and Hellstar Remina are in my opinion his most “Lovecraftian like)
@@wacky-physics7506 The PUBG/Fortnite drama was more complicated than that...
Bluehole games was using the Unreal Engine from Epic Games (makers of Fortnite). Their issue was that they were one of their most successful customers, were paying a load of royalties to Epic Games, were working CLOSELY with Epic around the development of the title, even before its release, and they were then releasing a direct competitor to them. Hurting their business and possibly using background knowledge they gained from working with Bluehole.
It wasn't just a "Look! They're doing a BR game!" they took issues with. That was just what Epic Games made the story look like. I say this as someone who despises Bluehole. They honestly suck for what they did to that game.
Uzumaki isn't really one of my favorite stories, but it is amazing how it progresses. The stort starts out relatively tame, but gradually gets darker and more insane with each story and has one of the most depressing/bittersweet endings of all his major stories.
Tomie is one of my favorite stories. Its bothering me how hes pronouncing Tomie
The fact that the Spiral Entity that curses the town in Uzumaki isn't on here baffles me
I've read that and I feel like if that kept happening in a town, they should just bail.
@@gasmasker7409 The spiral is pulling them in. That's what spirals do.
@@gasmasker7409there's actually a reason they don't, they're almost mind controlled to stay
I recently reread The Bully after buying Deserter and i forgot how disturbing it is. Its one of his few stories that is pretty much grounded in reality with no type of supernatural elements and has one of the creepiest downer endings i've ever seen in any of his stories simply for how it can and probably has happened in some form in real life.
In regards to the Window Monster? The family moved at the end of the story so, assuming her area of affliction is bound to a single location, I think he’s safe … also dude it’s pronounced “Toe-me-aye!” 😖😖😖
Lol it's not Tommy, it Toe-me-aye. Love the video!
I hate it so much when people put no effort into learning how to pronounce foreign words that they use
It's physical painful to hear you pronounce Tomie's name like that. It's Tome-ee-ay.
Same.
exactly
I wanted to skip that section.
It was same levels of cringe as somebody pronouncing nuclear as 'nucular'.
@@no_one01-5 or libary instead of library. Or kinniegarden instead of kindergarten. Or ambalance instead of ambulance. Mispronunciations drive me nuts😂😂
mh yes, i do enjoy the classic Junji Ito manga Tommy. Loved the crossover with Power Rangers.
Ahh and here I thought it was Tommy Pickles from Rugrats that was causing all this trouble 😂 Too be fair, if Tara Strong actually voiced Tomie I think she’d make a great voice for her.
I'm glad i'm not the only one who was going nuts over the way he was pronouncing that.
@@JDKT002 You are not alone dude, it is really difficult to watch the Tomie portion. Their knowledge of her is correct, but the Tomie = Tommy kills me 😂
How the hell did he get ''Tommy'' out of Tomie
@@Pherioxus might be a german native speaker; in german / austrian, IE is pronounced like a long e (like in Lee).
You're saying Tomie's name wrong, and it's making me cringe.... it's pronounced "Toe-Me-Aye"
Thank u
I was about to comment the exact same thing.
I say "Tommy" and don't care.
Yeah.... its just one of those things that hits a nerve. Idk why. I dont usually care about how people pronounce things generally. But... Tomie..... something about that name being said wrong just hits weirdly. Like part of the curse itself lol
It was a common mistake no need to be rude 😿
Fuchi is basically just Sarah Jessica Parker 😂😂😂
How are you not gonna put Hellstar Remina in the list. That manga is as Lovecraftian as it gets.
Kinda strange that he put it in the title card, but not on the list
tanks for the video, cuz of it i got the collection to binge watch tonight =)
Awesome video and ty for turning me onto Junji Ito.
Unfortunately, the anime adaptations don't make justice to the source material's greatness
I wanna believe that Planet Remina is where all the horror creatures are from.
Love this theory
Absolutely outstanding!my favourite Junji Ito story's was fashion model and the next door neibour!😎👍
Window next door mess with me the most. It plays with your comfort zone and violates it.
It's pronounced "Toe-mii-ay"
fr bro really said tommy 💀
Good video, it's just funny to hear "Tomie" pronounced as "Tommy" lol
Tomie be like "You fools! I have 70 alternative accounts!"
Out of everything Junji has done the Oil Story just grosses me out lmao. Especially with the chick having her mouth open when homeboy was squeezing it out of his face
Yeah, I literally feel a bit sick every time that image pops up somewhere 🙃
Oh yeah, it's grease. That one is disgusting as hell
Glyceride/Greased
Marvelous work
For those who may not know Tomie is actually pronounced Tome-I-ay, I did not know this until I watched the animated remake of a few of his stories,
I am not the person who has watched much anime or read manga but i am proud of my Junji Ito collection, love Junji Ito works so much
I was literally crying when you called Souichi ‘The landlord’
And Binzo ‘the boy’
JUSTICE FOR BINZO 💔💔💔
All of it was a dream too. Luckily Souichi doesn’t actually turn out to be like that
One of the most incredible authors/artists/storytellers of our time. I absolutely love his work. TRULY terrifying, yet also straight from the heart.
A WAW AWESOME VIDEO
Junji Ito is a true mad lad
Even the "Army of One" is analogous to the recent Operation Covaids.
That moment you realize your nightmares you had in your preschool years scarred you so much you feel nothing from these stories and images.
Man, don't use the anime version of these stories, they're considered the worst version of his works. Uzumaki looks promising tho.
To be fair, the fashion industry does love "striking" looking models. She is skinny, tall and very memorable, so her being a model doesnt surprise me.
I feel like junji ito was the inspiration for little nightmares
I know coraline was one of the inspiration
Someone has probably said this but…
It’s not Tommy.
Toe-me-Aye. Japanese is almost always said in letter pairs.
Glyceride draws out feelings of disgust and discomfort from me in such a visceral way and I hate that it was one of the stories that got animated 🤢
In Junji Ito's world , nobody ever goes to the doctor or news organizations when weirdness happens. But No one cares because his stories are so compelling you don't really want reality breaking in.
i love junji ito as my fav horror manga author, but you can def tell that some of his endings are pretty bad/rushed like in Army of One
I thought that myself, but apparantly in some interviews with him and his editors, their favourite is those kind of endings, because like in real life you don't often get a narratively satifying ending conclusion,
ey wonderthigh lol
Honestly, I think it's on purpose. Like, to me it looks clear as day that he simply doesn't want to give a conclusion to most of his stories, but with some cases, he does
It’s also scarier without a conclusion as there is a sense that the horror never truely ends. Plus explanations and conclusions lessen the impact of the monsters and the horror.
Uzumaki was the first story I’ve read by Junji ito and I’ve been hooked since then
This man is an absolute genius 👏
Oh boy, Trypohobia.
From the Shivers episode.
One thing is like to point out: The Human Chair is not originally a Junji Ito story. The manga is based on a short story written by the author Edogawa Ranpo
The background song is amazing, what is the name?
The Tomie part was really hard to listen to, how in the Cold Hell did he get '''Tommy'' out of Tomie?
I like your Horror Content.
Ah yes “Tommy”
Would love to be able to watch these
**Remina closing in on Earth**
"Serious Pu.."
Remina: Why do I hear boss music?
Miss Fuchi is just Sarah Jessica Parker
The story of Glyceride is like me when I'm on the Keto Diet.
One of my favorites is the man with a hundred scalps I don’t know what he’s called I just saw him in junji ito coloring book my first exposure to junji itos art, I stood there just going through the art book I was glued and I love his art now
I like that you said "and A nightmare fule"
Not Tommy 🤣 good video though
Junji Ito's nightmares are Marvelous!
I got junji ito phone case. Sick af and I love it
Nice! I just bought a tshirt with Kirie from Uzumaki on it. Where did you get your phone case?
Exponentiating, trans- or multi-dimensional horrors are truly Eldritch. They are also analogous real world problems faced today, especially the last couple centuries.
Ok but the way this guy pronounces Tomié makes me want to climb into one of those mysterious holes in the wall and never come back
The art of the anime and manga are creepy and amazing
Glycerin still haunts me to this day
The scene where her brother pins her down haunts my nightmares. The fact that she screams instead of closing her mouth makes it even worse 😱
The jade statue one could disturb some people greatly.
The widow next door seriously creeped me out
No junji ito story has hurt me the same way people pronouncing Tomie as Tommy
That girl would never be a fashion model
Ilka Bruhl.
Glad to make you less stoopid
I think you GREATLY underestimate the human lust for weirdness.
Considering we already have trap fashion models and models with various skin conditions and deformities, I can imagine that thing would absolutely make it in the western world, because the western world is f*cking weird.
The amount of ads are crazy......
Remina scared the crap out of me... That vile star.
The ballons sold me Ito, I’m buying stuff.
He said console like it was a game system😂😂
Nice video, but I couldn't help but laugh at how u pronounce Tomie😊
Kind of surprised at how often you chose to use footage instead of more from the manga.
Note to self never eat while being shown a review of Gyo almost had chokes of meatloaf on my floor
the Cannibal boy reminds me of Shin-Chan's schoolfriend Bo-Chan
you shouldve put more of the comic art in here
Shinya Tsukamoto please
I love the way FUCHI talks normal, it's makes her more scary
Watching this made my skin crawl
Murdered in a car accident 19:05? That is quite a contradictory cause of death as murder and accident are generally mutually exclusive unless a murder is disguised as an accident in which case no one should publicly be aware of it.
Amazing video.. im so watching this..
That said.. the word "draught" is pronounced "draft" and means "a drink". A "draft" is a wind coming through a hole and is what you meant when you said "drought".
Fuji reminds me so much of Glenn Close
Junji Ito was set to be hired by Hideo Kojima to work for their project with Guillermo Del Toro. Until Konami canceled the project.
Yeah, I just ruined your day. Youre welcomr.
Popeyes vs that evil planet
Hellstar and the one with the neighbor ❤️
This man really just pronounced Tomie as Tommy XD
To-mi-e...."Toe-me-aye." 😑
the monster in 2:46 surely is Sarah J Parker?
I love junji itos work ngl
Jesus the old lady is terrifying
Ah so Japanese goosebumps but it's actually beyond terrifying. Awesome.
the constant mispronunciation of "Tomie" is driving me nuts here.
glad it wasn't just me who felt pain hearing the mispronounciation of tomie.
I'm sorry but I couldn't help but laugh out loud at how you pronounced Tomie 😭
FR" TOMMY "
Yeah it doesn't seem like many people in the comments know the correct pronunciation either lol.
Cannibal Boy's dad made the mistake of taking his traveling show overseas; He got a couple of shows in America, before too many attendees had guns for the boy to overpower.
guys he said Tomie wrong so people would comment and he'd get more engagement
I'm trying to decide if I think that makes him an asshole or an evil genius 🤔
