Are you kidding? The way that this is literally the manga panels coming to life is nothing short of amazing. I can't wait for the release.
I just want to see a board meeting of "okay CRAZY IDEA...what if we made an adaptation of something popular...HEAR ME OUT...and kept it faithful to its source material so it retains the things that made it popular in the first place?"

I agree with you my friend, respecting the source material = EZ profits
Exactly, very well made!

I can see why this is taking so long - the attention to detail in the animation and how closely it matches Ito’s art is genuinely incredible.
Dap him up once ur finished
How it should be, the netflix adaptation seemed lazy & they picked the worst stories from his collection to present to potential new fans.
Also, you know, covid.
They want to get it right this time after the last two tries.
Sure like a year, but four?
i LOVE that they kept it in black and white, they can focus more on the details of the animation aswell as it's more true to the manga and it fits the horror vibe more
for real, I've always talked with my friends about how if there's a Junji Ito adaptation, a black and white style would be PERFECT.
I kinda hate it like I wanna see what their wearing 😭

The little flourish at 1:28 where Kirie tries to make her eyes rotate independently of each other is such a cute and fun detail. And it feels like something a real person would do on hearing that. I have never seen anything like that in an anime before. This show is in very capable hands.
I was also thinking that was such a realistic and cute detail!
Watch some studio ghibli movies bro, you will not be disappointed.
I haven't either it's era defining
If they're going to be adding little details like that, it makes me want to watch it even more. I admit at first I just thought it was going to be a copy-paste of the manga with music (however great it may be) and voice acting. I was still hyped, of course, but now even more so !!! hope they expend on the lore
I burst out laughing, its all so well done! I really hope the rest lives up to this
Kirye's little attempts to move her eyes independently are so endearing, I'm glad we aren't losing any of the silliness that goes hand in hand with the unrelenting horror in Ito's work

i agree, that bit was really cute
The power of animation, it's great to see the team have made use of the medium and that it's not just some pointless adaptation
I missed when studios/creative teams stuck to the "it'll be ready when it's ready!" approach without fear of forced crunch time to meet a deadline. This was worth the wait.
Japanese animation has always been dictated by deadlines. The only time it wasnt was the 80s era of OVAs where they could basically take as long as they needed due to income from VHS rentals making more money than TV serialization.

Straight up just finished the book rn, it was so good. I had no idea there was a anime version in the works for it! Can’t wait!
Insane fact I just learned, the guy who is making the soundtrack for Uzumaki is the same guy who made the soundtrack for Hereditary.
Colin Stetson
I had been hearing that sound for so long and only after watching hereditary’s behind the scenes footage did I find out it was a sax all along
It sounded like him, I was wondering. Especially with the saxophone playing at the end.
I knew it sounded familiar
@@CoraTheCobra He plays the sax and "sings" at the same time during the same recording, for this soundtrack. The track is called Spindrift. He is amazingly talented
Hereditary was horrible mate
I love that little detail of her attempting to spin her eyes like he was describing. It’s kind of silly to say, but it’s small stuff like that that makes me so excited for this adaptation and confident that the people creating it actually care and are going to deliver a fantastic show.
I completely agree!
That was one of my favorite moments! Perfectly captured those little bits of humor Ito will add to his works.
YES i loved that bit. its insane how they haven't skimped on the movement whatsoever. Anime usually cuts so many corners, this is really crazy.
It’s small stuff like that’s the reason why it got delayed 3 entire years, quality over timeframe!
Absolutely. The fact it's not such a literal adaptation and they felt it was necessary to add small character moments really pushes the detail from page to animation. Incredible stuff.
Such an unbelievably expressive adaptation of these scenes, brilliantly faithful to the original work. It's looking to be well worth the wait.
It’s like a manga that’s come to life. This is gonna be fantastic.

Colin Stetson as composer is a stroke of genius, his style heavily incorporates circular breathing and lots of arpeggio patterns that perfectly fit the idea of getting pulled into a whirlpool.
Colin Stetson the goat, he makes the most beautiful, creepy, and unnerving sounding music
Genius also worked in Hereditary and Midsommar. He's so good at making unsettling and unnerving music. It's genuinely nerve wrecking and chills inducing.
isn't he the one that did the hereditary soundtrack, cause that title card sounded exactly like it came from the end of that film
If this is the level of quality we can expect throughout the entire final product, I wouldn't mind waiting to binge this in the retirement home in however many years.
Im going to look like the guy in long dream by the time its ready
Every adaptation I've seen of Junji Ito's drawings into another medium has always felt like it lost something in the translation... except for this one. This is the first time I've ever seen anyone make his art look as good in motion as it is on the still page. I'm deeply impressed
Well now we know why it got delayed for 3 entire years, they didn’t want to give us a mediocre product!
@c.a.whodat
Right. Unlike Crunchyroll and Netflix who just wanted their ROI from the clicks they got.
That's because they all cheap out on the animation. This one looks like it has an actual budget.
I also think the vibe of his works gets messed up because it isn’t in black and white like in his books
@@yallqaeda1349
Honestly, even though "Budget" sounds like an Answer, even with a high Budget the other Adaptations would've failed.
This version decides to try a different strategy, by spending less on Colourist and relying on Rotoscoping to combine 2D and Realism.
So glad Junji is starting to grow in the West. He needs to be seen by every horror fan East and West.
Wdym starting, hes BEEN grown
im just glad they finally seemed to figure out how to adapt his work affectively.
Anyone who actively reads manga knows who Junji Ito is. He just hasnt gotten any good adaptations to the screen. Just the same with Vagabond and Berserk.
I don’t even like horror and even I find his work to be quite enthralling. It just pulls you in and leaves an impact on you.
His stuff is truly chilling. Unlike horror that relies on jumpscares, his stuff sticks with you.
I can't wait to see the hospital sequence it's one of my favorite horror things ever
I am curious to see If they include the lost chapter too
@@MrNoot39449 sadly not a chance since the entire show wont cover the entire manga
@@ulysses3849- We don't know that. It's been at least four years in the making now.
@@Inconvenient_NPCFOUR YEARS
Honestly that chapter got to me the most, that's what I find so wonderful about Ito's Horror. It's so versatile, that even if your not bothered by it, you read enough and you'll eventually find something that sends that particular shiver down your spine and makes your stomach turn.
Undeniable proof that Junji Ito adaptations should be kept in black and white. A lot of what makes his work characteristic and striking is how he uses ink and shadowing, and a good chunk of that's lost when you add in solid color.
Not even just that. Just TRY to find someone who understand and loves them. Literally that simple
The director saw how literally every Junji Ito's adaptation review are "the art style stuck, they can't replicate the manga's amazing horror art" and then did the most amazing looking anime adaptation of uzumaki ever
Not just Junji Ito. Anime and horror have very rarely mixed well. Seems to me that this director has been working hard to make it work. His previous series, Flowers of Evil, was genuinely unsettling, and even the much calmer Mushishi had this certain haunting atmosphere. If there's one anime director who's qualified to make this happen, it's Hiroshi Nagahama.
Very happy of the results! It has taken forever but "Rome wasn't built in a day" 😊😂
@@cybertruckeralpha I think the art styles seen in the late 80s and early 90s lend to horror very well, and we are only just now beginning to see the digital age reach and surpass that quality. but it is very expensive, and that is why it is not often done.
I am glad they aren't taking any liberties with changing the art style and designs like they did in the previous adaptations which failed miserably. When it comes to Ito's work, just literally copy the manga as it is since it is already perfect and turn it into animation.
@@cybertruckeralpha Mushishi was so chill
Wow. A Junji Ito adaptation that actually gets it. The black and white art leaves some of the detail to your imagination, while also using blank space and sharp contrast to really pull your attention to certain areas. It makes those details seem almost hyper-real. You just can't get this atmosphere with a traditional anime style, since its as much about the artwork as it is about the stories. I was starting to think we would never see an good anime adaptation, but this looks amazing.
i agree!
I was just about to say the same thing! The black-and-white nature of it adds SO much!
I thought the Mania one was pretty good though. It took inspiration from some of the colored parts of his work. Still, nice to see this adaptation without color. Feels more like his actual work
YES! If it ain't broke, don't fix it! They did an incredible job, it also saves the animators time colouring so they can add more detail to the individual shots, which will lend such a great sense of horror that Ito is known for!
ur wording on this was amazing
I really couldn't care how long this takes to release. Literally everything I've seen of this so far tells me that it'll probably be not only the best adaptation ever, but also one of the best cinematic horror pieces ever. Please, work on this until my grandchildren can see it being released. Everything about this is pure perfection
At this rate, we'll get gta 6 before this anime.
I feel this is probably the best 1-to-1 visual translation of Junji Ito's work ever. Like it's exactly his art style come to life.
This is definitely why it took so long to make this anime.

Bro said "come to life"
This is the exact style in which any animated Junji Ito adaptation ought to be made in! The horror is so inherent to the manga style, so why not just animate in a manga style?
The director knows what they're doing. This is beautiful

Do you realize this type of animation takes YEARS on top of YEARS to make the entire anime look like this? This clip alone probably took 2-3 months to complete.
This is why people say Ito’s works are unadaptable, because his artstyle is hard to make work in an animated format while staying true to the source material. This is an unprecedented project with a small staff, so be patient for just a bit longer. The end result will be well worth it.
Despera fans be like
I LOVE this animation. The fact that it’s in black and white makes it a whole other level. I feel that this captures Junji Ito’s vibe and art the best by far. Top tier.
I recall a lot of people reviewing the last anime were saying how that one B&W segment was the best and that they should try doing that for the rest of the series. I’m glad this one goes the extra mile bad tries to do the lines and shadows as well.
I wish alot more of his stories would get this treatment. And not whatever netflix did
i think im one of the few people who dont like this style, purely because its essentially a moving version of the artwork. Now i understand thats WHY people like it, and it looks cool for sure, but I tend to watch anime versions of my favourite mangas to see it in colour, with high quality, smooth animations, bringing the stories to life. I feel like this doesnt really add anything the books didnt already do well.
Yeah feel like they just brought his manga to life. In a more "literal" sense.

Getting close to half a decade of waiting. :(
I believe the producers of Uzumaki understood that the only way for a Junji Ito adaptation to have a fraction of the charm that his manga had, is to straight up bring his manga panels to life, which they did spectacularly. Hats off to the animators and everyone involved in the making of this anime, it looks truly incredible
Yeah I've never read his manga but I can imagine exactly what it would look like
I agree. The composition of the original manga is so important, that attempts to "redraw" them like they try to in previous adaptations fall flat because they don't focus on the details of the shot. While the scenes understandably don't have the raw detail and brushwork that the original has, it is more than made up for through the animations, both the very subtle ones that emulate the density of the manga, and the very noticeable ones that really feels like its bringing to live the motion conveyed by the manga. The sound design on top of this is excellent as well, and I think is probably one of the things that will make this worth watching even though the shots are basically taken directly from the manga.
I think that the fact it's in black and white also does a lot of good. The art just isn't the same in color, where the lights and the darks just aren't starkly contrasted enough to create the scenes that Junji wants.
@@TenjinZekkenAgreed! Speaking of composition specifically, Ito's manga do an incredible job of stretching out the tension and the horror of the situation -- this snippet really excites me as it seems the team behind this project get why his stories work: the pacing is great and doesn't seem as rushed as other anime adaptations of his work have been.
I started it the other day and dropped it at about chapter 9. It's just a bunch of different stories, that sometimes don't even have a proper end to them. It's ok for what it is, I guess at the time of the release of this Manga it was top notch. Nowadays, I could call it mid.
@@GrandiaForever-or1tw are there other better horror Manga out there? Junji Ito is far from mid... He's basically the Japanese HP Lovecraft
This has got to be one of the most unique adaptation. Sometimes the terror in Junji Ito's work is best seen in the manga. So by literally bringing the manga to life, the animation can keep the eerie yet intriguing vibe that Ito's work have.
I wish there would be more anime adaptations like this. It's a dream I've been holding for years.

@carterjeremy89 Indeed. It's one thing to be faithful to the story, but to painstakingly recreate a style as intricate as Ito's? We've been waiting years for this but it honestly looks like it's going to be worth the wait, I'm so stoked!
Ur mom been waitin years 4 u to get a job 2 lil bro make her happy for 1ce
@@cggc5871I’m in your walls
The first Junji adaptation that ACTUALLY does his work justice!!!
Can't wait, this looks fantastic!!!
I actually liked the other stuff too but I agree this looks great
Oh my GOD it looks so good, please please please take your time and make it all of this quality.
Would love an update on the release date! Y’all said late 2023, and there’s literally only 6 weeks left in the year.
Im curious to know this as well. I keep hearing late 2023. There isnt much later left in 2023. But id rather wait with another delay if thats what it takes for them to deliver with this amount of artistic integrity.
Yeah I just googled and can’t find any updates besides July. I don’t mind waiting till after the holidays.
man it's been in the works since like 5 years and they keep delaying it. They should take their time and I understand that there's been a pandemic in the middle of their work, but I would like some more communication
As of a few days ago, it's officially been delayed indefinitely :(
@@akkoyu123 oh my God
This looks better than I could’ve imagined. If the rest of the show holds up to this quality it’ll be history in the making.
Yeah this will be a total game changer
If you notice, there’s this jarring essence of stop-motion almost and it’s like I’m actually flipping through the pages of the manga. It helps bring it alive and adds to the sharpness of the horror that Ito brings to his stories. It’s so compelling and beautiful.
THIS is the kind of adaptation i've been waiting for. This animation style perfectly captures the unsettling atmosphere of Junji Ito's work the same way it does in the manga. I can't wait to watch this.
I agree , one of his best works!!
SAME ❤
I’m not mad about the delays, but rather the lack of communication. I don’t care whether it’s nearly finished or perhaps even cancelled - but if you have any semblance of self-respect you should share those details with your audience, or people are gonna stop caring and move on. Adult Swim themselves said it’d be coming in 2023. That time has come on and gone.
At this point it might be better to assume it’s never coming out. Both Adult Swim and the studio clearly have issues communicating with their fans, even when the news is yet another delay. They just can’t be bothered.
Cancelled
@@J1nxPowder your mom should have canceled you at an abortion clinic
It has not been cancelled. All 4 episodes were completed a few weeks ago.
@@jerry1006really if it's done already why not release it?
No kidding! I've been waiting since the announcement and was checking every time they announced new details. But nothing... and now that it's been a full year I'm beginning to lose complete interest.
I don't care how long I may have to wait, so long as the rest of the show is the same quality of this sneak peek... ITS GONNA BE FIRE!!!!!!!!
It's a great decision to do it in black & white. It makes it feel more like an animated manga, which fits this type of horror well because a lot of the scares come from sudden page turns, and it's hard to replicate that on screen. Really looking forward to this version of Ito's classic
This is gorgeous! They're doing their best to retain all the details that make Junji Ito's style so distinctive and the choice to keep it grayscale really let's the audience take in all those details without distracting colours or being too visually stimulating!
It's genius too because they can use it to save budget
The lack of communication from the studio and it's audience is really annoying,If your gonna leave us waiting at least give us an update😭
This will never come out
The way she was trying to move her eyes independently was honestly adorable 😭 I can't wait for this and completely understand why it's taking long. The details!!!
Right! In the manga she seemed dull to me. But, based off the trailer, the anime gives the characters a distinct personality.
@@kpopfan246I mean Its supposed to be dull, to focus less on charaters and more in the horror
@@flyingorange2482 I get that, and Ito is a genius when it comes to inescapable monstrosities. But, it makes me care a little less about the characters when something happens to them. The monsters and horrors are impactful, but something happens to a character themselves it not as gruesome to me. Now when some of his works have characters with some personality, like Souichi and his folks, Michio, Ms. Fuchi, and Remina, the story is 10 times scarier to me.
this looks so much better than the previous adaptations of his work. I'm so happy they've found a way to bring Junji Ito's work to life.
Maybe they can do another one of his mangas later if this turns out as nicely as this teaser looks. (Hellstar Remina would be awesome, and, of course, Tomie).
PLEASE CHRIST take as much time as needed, the art looks stunning,
That eerie saxophone soundtrack playing over the title card sounds a lot like Colin Stetson, who did the soundtrack for Hereditary. That would be a sick musical choice for this show.
It sounds like Colin Stetson because it is Colin Stetson
I love how smooth the animation is. Captures all the ordinary details we take for granted, while accentuating what stands remarkably stands out, before everything goes above and beyond impossibly grotesque and in your face about it. The normalcy becomes so much more endearing somehow, like the girl trying to understand the dad's eye thing by blinking her eyes.
it's smooth because it's all 3D CGI trying to pass as 2D animation...
@@Mtaalas stop commenting this literally everywhere
@@Mtaalasso?
@@Mtaalaslol no, it's rotoscoped
This is probably the best usage of rotoscoping I’ve seen in an anime, all the benefits without it’s negatives. Bravo to the animation team for making that work out.
Not rotoscoped, it's cgi
@@7elevenhomelessman310rotoscoping is the technique silly
@@7elevenhomelessman310It isn't CGI, this is all hand-drawn 2d animation. They just use live footage as reference for the movements characters make.
@@7elevenhomelessman310 Get your eyes checked
Almost all of this is CGI. The slight variation in the line weights and animation looks too perfectly distributed to be rotoscoped. I imagine they used a simple noise modifier for most of the effects. At 0:29 the line overlapping the nose is exactly how a cel shader behaves and looks unintentionally ugly. Also, Kirie's hair at 0:32 appears to be intersecting with itself.
One aspect that throws me off is at 0:30 when her eyes adjust to match the perspective which isn't typical with 3d animation. However, I have seen tools that change the shape of the face based on camera angles such as Cam-Shape-Matic.
Indefinitely delayed with no official release date makes me sad
let's hope for this autumn
I'm excited to see where this ends up. The attention to detail is very impressive, each shot here correlates to a panel in the manga. The animators did an amazing job as well. Ito's work is notoriously hard to translate to animation, but here it is done to (near) perfection.
Oh my goodness. I had completely written this project off. But seeing it in action, more importantly, hearing that exquisite soundtrack, this is truly a shot of adrenaline for all Ito fans. Thank you very much to animation studio Drive for their hard work.
You can really feel the sound design twisting your mind into an unending spiral of unknown horrors
So, I looked into the composer, Colin Stetson. He uses a method called circular breathing when playing woodwind instruments in which someone doesn’t have to pause their playing to take breaths of air. Theoretically, someone using this method of breathing could continuously play, nonstop. Where this gets existential is when you realize that the music itself, is a spiral.
@@Bro-BLZIT I haven't red uzumaki but that would be a very interesting scene that I hope they put in the series, like imagine the son coming to his house only to hear a repeating melody or song sang in a wind instrument over and over until he reaches it's source in his father's room as he sings over and over again surrounded by spirals while he does the weird eye thing
you'd written it off?? after the first teaser i knew this would be a masterpiece from the animation alone
Pretty incredible that this is like watching manga come to life. It seems so unique and well made. ❤
my god, the animation is so fluid and smooth… the attention to detail is outstanding! I was so worried that Uzumaki got silently canceled, but now I can be relieved knowing it’s still being worked on, take your time Adult Swim! 💕

@@DefeatLust I thought the manga was great, this trailer showed basically nothing. Everything goes of the deep end the further in it gets so I'm glad they showed restraint I the trailer

@@DefeatLust just read it if u want to know. All of itos work is worth a read cuz bassicly every story is scary in some manner (there are a few exceptions but only like 4 of his stories arent scary)
@@DefeatLust It's a story about going down a literal spiral of dread. This clip is only the foreshadow to the entire series. The start of the spiral when you start it from the outside going in. Without spoiling anything, Shuichi's father's obsession with spirals goes too far and creates a domino effect.
Oh my god. Are we actually getting an animated junji ito project that properly reflects his art? This looks incredible.
IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ONE
Take your time [AS] been watching your channels since I was a teen, I know youll put in the right love and work into this iconic project!
This is how you show respect to junji’s work. Look at that quality of animation! Netflix needs to take some notes. THIS is what we want. Very good work to everyone working on this show. I can’t wait, but I will
Yep, you nailed it!
I'm not even a horror fan but I'm absolutely stoked for this. The animation is incredible and perfectly captures Junji Ito's style.
Still waiting in 2024
This looks much better than adaptations on Netflix.
I can feel the bleeding passion from the animation team in this entire project just from the first few seconds this starts playing 😢😢😢 I love it. Thank you everyone this is so good!!!
this looked like the characters just jumped out from the manga panels and started moving, its breathtaking
Keeping it in black and white is one of the best choices I think they could have made
This is gorgeous and it captures the atmosphere and feel of Ito’s art greater than most anime or live adaptations
I'm so excited for this, the art the music even the concept is cool asf it's all so good
SO GOOD OMG
This might just be the greatest anime adaptation of a manga
The hype is real.
No kidding. With how poor the last anime adaptations of Junji Ito's work were, I feel like they really wanted to knock it out of the park with this one.
if this does good i hope they come back and make more of ito's stuff
Both Berserk and Junji Ito's works are difficult to adapt because they both are mastercrafts of the manga/ B&W comic medium.
