Single parents are heros trying to do their best. Unfortunately it is mostly mum’s who have to do this. Putting food on the table, paying the rent/mortgage whilst trying to juggle parenting.
I grew up in a single parent family and it makes me emotional to remember what my mother did - working 2 jobs, sacrificing herself for both my sister and I to have a decent upbringing.
Most women get benefits.
Be real.
Everyone has their opinion, however anyone getting up and going to work every day, working hard, doing their best …. should be able to afford the basics - a roof, food and utilities.
What a mature young man her son is, so mature and insightful.

The government and the feminists drove men out of the households knowing full well 1 wage can't support a family so that the government could indoctrinate the kids ( schools ) and the mother kept away from the children so she doesn't interfere with the social engineering.

It is sick that children in the UK are getting asked about things like that. He shouldn't be worried about it. It is not his responsibility to pay for household expenses it's his mother's responsibility.
He should be made aware that there is less money to spend on thing's but he shouldn't be emotionally involved.
The question is why energy prices are so high yet energy companies profits are at record levels while the normal people suffer in the dark and in the cold.

It’s is the anti drilling and anti digging. Oil costs are not set by a company. Right now hostile nations decide production which determines supply and price. The west has to really think how nuts they are going to go environmentally.
Where the hell are the fathers? I have watched many videos that talk about the cost of living in England being high and the videos interview single mothers and fathers are no where in sight.

I looked after my daughter since birth as a single father as her mother had zero interest (she is a vet) but cares only about herself, sends almost no money ever. Luckily I have money and can look after my daughter alone, she is 7 now and a super happy loved kid and has no interest in her mom, she just gave birth to her... nothing really. I am the one who takes care of her everyday, I am her real MOM & DAD!
Are we a society of single mothers. Where are the father(s)? Every news story on the "cost of living crisis" focuses on struggling single mothers, and their worried/scared children... but no one asks how the father's contributing to raising their children?

The dad had to leave because, off camera, Dan was proselytising his Christian beliefs like a Jehovah's witness. Dan will be back round there next week to ask if they read the bible verses he handed out to them.

And I bet that plenty of people are unaware that if the mum is on benefits of any type, any child maintenance is ignored. IE...if "dad" pays £500 per week...that payment is totally ignored and FULL benefits are still paid!

It bothers me that a lot of parents don't make an effort to keep their money concerns away from the kids. Children don't have the capacity to understand all the ins and outs of it, and may worry about being evicted or running out of food. They cannot help anyone, and they shouldn't have to listen to their parents talking about it. I spent my entire childhood listening to my parents fight over money and the lack of it, until I was 12 and they divorced. We had no money going forward, either. Kids rely on parents to take care of them. It's their job. My mother used to pawn my beloved portable radio (it was a gift from my father). She always got it back, but I cried a lot of tears every time it happened. It was my only possession. She didn't want to work, and alimony and child support was a pittance. While none of that killed me, it gave me a bird's eye view of responsibility.
I agree, my parents openly talked about money worries even when I was little. I remember going to school scared we wouldn't have food, think was about 9-10 at the time . Their worries became my worries. I would say don't involve your young children in this if you can avoid it, life growing up in Britain now is hard enough.

My dads 70 he still does jobs on people's house like guttering, roofing etc. And still doesn't put heating on, maybe it went on today as temperatures dropped. But mostly sits in a sleeping bag. Not what I what for my parents 😕
I remember as a child/teenager in the 80's, getting out of bed in winter, and there being ice on the inside of the bedroom windows.
What ever did we do before central heating?
And now it seems it has to be on 24/7.

I can remember our heating being put in, as part of a refurbishment scheme
people died at alarmingly high rates in winter before central heating, they still do but nowhere near a severe as back then! People used to die much younger due to poverty. We're now living longer due to advancements in society.

I remember watching an old B & W film many years ago. It was about a husband and wife who were doing their best to raise a family during tough times. The parents made sure that the children understood the value of money but with each crisis the mum and dad said "if it gets much worse we will have to go to the bank and withdraw our savings". At the end of the film the adult children discovered that the "savings" never actually existed. The parents did this so that their children wouldn't be scared and worried throughout their childhood. I think it is good to educate children about money management, budgeting etc but please protect them from your fears as much as you can.
That's "I Remember Mama" and remember when the little girl was in the hospital and they couldn't visit, Mama disguised herself as a washer woman, scrubbing floors on her hands and knees, so she could sneak in to see her daughter.
Should have thought of that during C19 when my 87 y o mom was in a hospital with a urinary infection (NOT C19!!) and no family was allowed. They starved her and left her to soil herself for days. It was devastating.

That's what I thought so wierd
I guess they wanted people to relate to a regular family eating typical food and chatting about their experiences in a natural manner. Problem was topic was very emotional much more than one might imagine in sense grandmother was working beyond retirement and mother told interviewer she was working extra hours not for luxuries like holidays but for essentials and that she feared the boiler packing up……you could relate to her stress and concern and even her misplaced guilt that her children being affected. What felt sad and so relatable was that after all her work even when she has time off she is less cheerful and relaxed than before.
There are so many families that will relate to this families concerns. Is this modern Britain and if it is it needs to change. We all deserve a better share of apple pie than this.
I think the idea is to just hold the interview with a regular family doing what they do every day. It does seem a little odd but it also shows this is hurting the average working family.

I haven't watched the whole thing, but I noticed that everyone except the little boy (who ate his food like a champ) stopped eating early on.
It’s really important not to let adult problems become kid problems. Conversations like this about food & money is not something a child should be exposed to or worry about. Even in poverty/recession, kids should be kids. This creates trauma.

Actually this creates children who grow up to be empathetic, open minded and frugal.
My husband was laid off 2008 to 2012, 5 very long years with sporadic working. My boys were 3 and 7 in 2008 and in 2012 when the recession ended 12 and 8.
Now at 21 and 17, they save their money, both worked from 15 yrs on, and know the value of the dollar.
Trauma indeed, amazing how the Greatest Generation who survived the Great Depression and grew up during it, amazing how they just got on with things eh.

Lovely lovely people, but when they say “I am an NHS worker” it is a bit ambiguous. NHS salaries range from a Band 2 lowest banding starting on about £20,000 a year up to Band 9 on about £100,000 a year top grades, so the term NHS worker is so incredibly vague. The Gran says she is working at 70, however my sister worked until she was 70 not because she had to but because she wanted to and she worked 2 hours a day, she enjoyed it, she had friends there, plus holiday money etc.
Does the Gran actually live with them. Did I miss that bit. Gran will have a basic state pension of £740 a month plus her part time salary which could be anything, although again it doesn’t say what she does either work wise unless I missed that bit. Mum if she is working full time and on the most basic NHS Band 2 salary will bring home about £1,400 to £1500 monthly. So if Mum and Gran are living together, I would assume they are bringing in together at the very very least £2,500 possibly up to £3,000 monthly. If she is divorced I am assuming she would get maintenance monthly although maybe not or maybe widowed. Has her mortgage rate gone gone up, quite a few have if they aren’t not fixed rate.
I find these articles really interesting, but frustrating because it would be better if they were more specific and less vague about incomings and outgoings. Her mortgage could have shot up in monthly payments as mortgage rates have gone up, but again that isn’t asked.
They also could have 2 cars and put the kids in private education

The interviewer should have provided a nice take out dinner for the family while he was there being so intrusive and interviewing the family. I hope the channel provided a nice gift card to a grocery store or dept store for sharing their numerous worries in their lives.

For decades we've always worn extra jumpers and coats in our house in the winter.
That's what our parents had to do.
We heat the house up to 15C if we are very lucky.
Some folk we know have the house at 22C and wander round in boxer shorts and vests !
No wonder some are in a pickle.
We were brought up to never waste ANYTHING and to always economise

You are so right! Very important to teach children how to be frugal. Only the extremely frugal and hardworking can ever grow rich. My dad grew up poor. He was frugal and invested plus still working at 85 years old. He likes working. He is financially comfortable because of his good choices.
I know what you are saying. We live in an old house that is very drafty. We wear jumpers and have several blankets. We put the heating on 2 hrs in the evening to warm the bedroom. We sleep in Pj's, under a 15 tog quilt with hot water bottles.
I saw a young man on the TV the other day saying he didn't know how he was going to afford to heat the house for his children, as he stood there in a vest top🤣.
We also know people who have their heating on 24/7.
This is so sad. That wee boy is very articulate he is a credit to his Mum. A lovely Family just trying to get by. Yet all these people sitting on Benefits on PIP the highest rate sitting with their arses in clover while we as the working poor are struggling month to month. How is this acceptable in Britain in 2022? These lovely kids shouldn’t have to worry about wether they will lose their home. What kind of a sick society do we live in. It’s a Liberty.

Good to hear from a regular little family about their experiences of life at the moment. Times are hard but this government needs to get its act together and do the decent thing and make certain public sector workers are paid the appropriate wage for their work ….a living wage that is increased inline with inflation. This is not a third world country and it is inexcusable that multi nationals are getting some of the largest profits in their history and pushing up inflation while ordinary workers and their families are suffering because they are effectively getting a pay drop .
I relate to the lady in the program and her mum working beyond retirement in order to make ends meet not for luxuries but simply to pay bills. Enough is enough people deserve a fairer share of the apple pie

Sadly so do I. When my boys were young I had 5 jobs and a wonderful mum who helped as much as she could. 1 ft job and 4 p/t an hour at a time to raise my family because I couldn't take any more violence . He of course refused to pay maintance and played the system by giving incorrect info or waiting for last day to reply to csa letters. Result he paid 30 pounds for about 2 months then stopped and the whole dance started again. The csa were hopeless. My family is grown now but I remember crying myself to sleep as I was determined my boys wouldn't suffer . That hollow pit in your stomach when an unexpected bill arrive or bigger bill than expected meant taking an extra shift. Friday night was treat night once a week. Wwe wrestling and a bag of sweets with a sandwich snacks supper. Nothing extravagant as the best thing I could give them was my time. That was priceless. It was hard really hard as I had 5 sons to look after and every penny counted. I micro managed my money and budgeted everything. Putting money away all year for the following Christmas or bdays and making our time count. Now I'm back to doing the same thing for myself as fuelbis beyond affordable. I use prepayment meters as I did when the boys were young to budget now its the bain of my life. I got to the shop to feed my meters and not myself. More than doubled for exactly the same service. Shameful. I don't put the heating on more than 2hrs a day. I fear using the electricity and every cost saving idea that is possible I do. I'm now in a downward spiral with the meters eating up my fixed income. That's not went up but everything else has. A heated throw I got after my stroke has been my lifesaver but my standard of living is barely existing. I have a roof over my head abet it's a flat concrete roof and concrete floor that holds zero heat and no amount of wishing I had a pitched roof that I could insulate will ever happen so I'm just hemorrhaging money . When he had that cold snap of Minus 17 during night I really didn't think I would make it . 15 pounds a day on meters to be barely warm. That included the money I had for food. Postal strike held up my prepayment vouchers or so they said so had to borrow money until it came but only lasted just over 8 days. Doesn't touch the sides. So extra money for heating and lights comes out of food budget as its the only thing I can use. Its not home cooking I have the problem with its how long I can afford to cook something. It cuts into heating allotments time. So I can budget like a wizard when it's needed but I can't turn an empty bank account into a full on. This government is making Thatcher look like a beginner. Take from the poor to give to the rich has always been the Tory way but this is worse than the Thatcher years.

I live in a Kibbutz in Israel, where everyone is looked after. Maybe communities-should set up a communal kitchen in every street . Also there are organizations in towns where one person contributes transport , another would give some lessons to children etc.

I've told them Christmas might be a little lean this year becaue money is tight and they said, that's ok, Santa will bring us presents. And I just felt like throwing up at that moment. And I said, that's right, because you've been really good girls, I am sure Santa will bring you some presents. Oh man, I am getting depressed just thinking about it.
30 years ago I had to tell my 2 young children that Christmas was going to be very different because I didn't have enough money. I allowed them to pick something out of a mail order catalogue to the value of £30 each, which I could pay for monthly.

I work at 70 out of choice. If you’re healthy it’s no big deal. Many teachers work into their 80s. They just sit and collect a check and a fat pension. Going to work one more year. I saved every penny of my checks for a retirement fund cushion. Will pay off mortgage then too.
@@lesliemcclinton7844 I was lucky enough to have paid off my mortgage and be 80% retired by 47. I have saved for 20 years for my life savings, in case of emergencies. I suppose some people like bring kept busy. I don't like the responsibility and commitment of work. I prefer being fancy free and leisurely. Because I don't know when it will be my turn to depart and I want to see the world and indulge my every passion before I either kick the bucket or am no longer able bodied or able minded. Old age scares me ...

Really no different to many families I used to work overtime as a hgv driver hen EU said no more 48hrs is it any overtime is repaid as average hrs, then you cried out because of lack of drivers 120£week I lost overtime didn't hear many cries out for us..
I would like someone to actually sit down with a family and give a full breakdown of income v expenditure. To get a true picture of the difficulties people are facing, rather than "your average family".
To show how the cost of living crisis is actually impacting them.
As for showing the boy having to wash the pots for the sympathy vote, my 2 sisters and I had a rota for wash, wipe, put away. We also had a list of jobs we had to do each week, including cleaning bathrooms, helping with meal preparation, and helping mum do the washing with the twin tub.

That’s HIS salary that he legally earned through years of hard work work. He is not obliged to dole out money to those who didn’t try as hard. The world is a competitive place.

High performers work themselves to illness through their school years, meaning by the time they are adults they have accumulated far more work than most of these people who dossed around at school and then started working hard at 18. Dan probably killed himself from 5 years old - all the way through school and uni and does the same in his job to rise through the ranks.

Reality is the majority on universal credit working many fulltime. Wages need to relate to the actual cost of living. How much is decent accommodation ? Food? Bills ? And the occasional luxury……are British workers not entitled to enjoy the fruits of their labour? Or is that only the preserve of the multi nationals with obscene profits.

It's such a shame that this is discussed in front of the children. I grew up with my dad working as a bricklayer, no proper work or wages over the bad winter months we got back then. My parents really struggled, with no help at all, I never knew this until I was a grown up. Me myself, ended up a single working parent, who struggled, had to balance when I had the heating on, who went without so my daughter had what she needed. My daughter never knew that we struggled, as I never did. That was for me to worry about and my parents to worry about. Children should be children for as long as possible, without worry about bills being paid.
So glad I never had kids!

The problem in this country, people are not used to cutting there cloth. Sensible budgeting is key. Stop wasting money unnecessary buy food that requires a bit of cooking instead of convince food. Don't buy branded goods when much cheaper alternatives are available.

Having kids is a very expensive lifestyle choice. There is so much pressure for people who have kids, but they are not necessary at all. Being childfree is great as you can choose a smaller house, have no car to waste money on and generally have less costs. Cost of living is expensive for all but having kids is so stressful and poor for mental health and financial health.

How are people like us supposed to manage? Low earners and parents of young children? the new rates of fuel at £33.20 per week (summer usage rate includes no heating) when I get under £90 per week ESA? Too sick to work last decade (worked my whole life since 16 yrs old) I’m attached to tubes to keep me alive and can’t layer up as I need frequent access to them for feeds, fluids, medications and toileting, I also have to pay rent & all bills there will be nothing left for food & my heating isn’t even on, I use medical pumps 24hrs a day too.. I can’t even afford to put the heating on this year at all, I’m freezing and it’s causing me issues with my feeds going into my jejunum too cold 😕 i’m malabsorbing the feed as it’s too cold in temperature it’s Meant to be administered warm room temperature and i’m not allowed to heat it..

Pitch a tent inside your home. Your body heat will help keep the tent warm. Also use an electric heating pad or electric blanket inside the tent. If bed bound, get a frame around bed to hang curtains and a curtain canopy. Keeps heat in.

She’s got a roof over her head, a mum to help her, a job and two healthy kids. So what’s the problem. She’s not living in a inhabitable home with no food, most people have to do overtime to make ends meet, she’s in a good position compared to a lot of people
It’s always relative isn’t it. She works 7 days a week and it isn’t enough, she has a 2nd job. She even take leave to work her 2nd job. Her mom is definitely a blessing. With 2 jobs working 60+ hours each week and as prices continue to rise they may lose their home. Oh course she should be grateful she isn’t on the street with a mom and 2 kids. 😮😢
Unfortunately, this usually many hours leads to a compromised immune system. That leads to illness. It takes one illness to screw someone on the edge financially. As it gets colder the heating bill will go up.

Do people in Britain not know their history anymore? I use to think they were very knowledgeable. It really is not that long ago when the majority of people in Britain were far worse off then now. My mother said if it wasn't for her uncle we wouldn't have had much of a Christmas when it came around. Those people didn't own homes or cars and knew how to buy good food they could afford. The money went on food, rent and heat. Saved to buy essential like clothing and shoes and if they could afford it a holiday by the seaside. It was a great day when you got an ice cream on holiday. PS: Kids knew all of this and didn't regard themselves as poor. They appreciated everything they got. They also knew not to ask for things because they weren't going to get it. There were two probable days you would get something, maybe on your birthday and for most a sensible Christmas that included Jesus and thanking God for your blessings. We enjoyed ourselves!

Working in the nhs is accepting been abused by patient because the service and wait time is to high -> this than reduce moral and due to the pay less staff -> increase wait time more abuse….
Last year I was able to money on side this year that isn’t gone to happen ….
