FellAzzy722 well, that happens when you don’t analyze the world and want to make your oc the protag (that doesn’t work unless it’s a parallel universe or something, and even then...).
But I’ve seen wonderful OCs that play really well with the world, maybe they are a occasional aid to the protagonist or have a cool adventure on their own outside of the plot with different motives and objectives.
Can we talk about how Greg's brother was one of the most hated characters and yet he had one of the more believable charcter arcs in the whole show.
i didn't find it any more believable than the rest of the rushed redemption arcs in the show, he turned from being a conservative racist guy to being totally understanding in a matter of hours. and nobody actually confronted him about the racism, he just felt bad because he was missing out or some shit and decided to be nice.
a lot of people hated him because of the timing of the episode too, and i know that's not the writers' fault but having a character say stuff like "illegal aliens" "martian immigrants" "you couldn't even marry an american" (and then magically turn good without ever having his worldview challenged) around the same time as trump was elected was really tasteless.
I didnt know he was hated at all... I loved Andy, he was fuckin hilarious. Even if he never did get steven that stick of pepperoni.

I mean you forget that humans outside of beach city don't know that Gems exist so of course, he's going to be defensive because in all honestly, they were squatting on his property. Also, Pearl said "I'm not even a citizen" so the term "Illegal Alien" is correct honestly he was more worried about how his cousin was and what the hell happened. You could see he somewhat was family bound and after Steven's Talk No Justu he turned around but you could see he's holding something back. But the timing of it was garbage, like what the fuck.
@John Hasben the stuff he said might make sense in-universe, but you have to remember that this was written by real people who live in america and who (i hope) are against racism. the writers decided to use words like "immigrant", "illegal", and "american" on purpose. racial allegories are pretty common in kids cartoons, you could replace the gems in gem harvest with a group of human immigrants and the episode would still make sense. (if anything i thought the metaphors for racism were too forced. like you said, people outside of beach city don't know that gems exist, i'd expect someone meeting aliens for the first time to act way differently)

They are trying to do the show from steven's point of view. It does have its problems, which have been called attention to, but at least it's an intentional choice instead of a weird thing that ended up happening. This is Steven's story after all.
The closest we have got to sting people act while Steven wasn't around was when he and Lapis were watching them from afar, which was annoying. And soundless as well.

I think CN back in its heyday of 90s-early 00s were great! It had the anime (geared for teens), heck we all know elem kids watched that, mixed in with the comedy and man of action series.
GcorpCoPrez to be fair symbiotic titan and generator Rex had to end early mainly because they didn’t generate enough revenue (aka toys) by the time they came out the main place for the creators to get money were toys and they didn’t get enough toy sells

I need help but I don't know why it seems to be the case for most shows. They were aired at the wrong year.
The thing is shows with a story are less likely to expand on their audience late in the run because episodes are connected and most kids are too lazy to go watch the show from scratch. Compare that to Teen Titans GO where you can start watching from any point and won't have missed a thing. It's sad but so long as one show has a slightly better business model as the other, CN won't feel the need to give both the same attention.
Also, even if kids DID start watching shows from episode one and not the one they air at CN, they would have to watch it someplace else which means less money for CN, and sure, they COULD make a streaming service with all episodes readily available, but that would cost even more money, and in the short term it's just more beneficial to not air that show at all. If it works, why fix it?

Yeah I agree. I don’t mind going off model, but I do mind all the fucking townie episodes. And what’s worse is that each one has some small bit of important story at the beginning or end, or important character development so you can’t just treat them as filler. If it was just some fun filler, then I’d watch it once and then do some re-watching of the important episodes whenever I need to. BUT instead Amethyst or Peridot have some mental breakdown in the last 3 seconds, and you can’t skip that or it’s context without having the next two episodes make zero sense. It really pisses me off, and I don’t see why they can’t just have filler and non filler episodes like any other show that’s part Slice of Life has.
I used to love it, then afterwards I took a good look and realized it's not that great of a show. Now I hate it, but in a way I still want to watch it

I love how Scott managed to somehow reason out the fact that it made no sense that Roses sword could shatter Pink Diamond, which ended up being one of the main plot point reveals.
The Steven NOT asking questions, was indeed a frustrating issue.
Specially for a kid that is has an innate curiosity in him. Lets see how he behaves now that is a proper teen.

rahma his character is really weird and unrealistic, he is too childish for his age, but sometimes he demonstrates a maturity that is not befitting of a teenager either, hell, even the thousand year old guardians aren’t as mature as him in some cases.

And just from how the Diamonds have continued to treat his family-Yellow Diamond splashed and flicked her tears on the Gems, both have refused to acknowledge the Crystal Gems in any way, and in the most recent promo, they continue to treat Pearl as a slave, and Blue Diamond utterly laughs and refuses to acknowledge Garnet as her own individual. . ."Oh. . ."IT" wants to be called a Garnet. . ." Just from that behavior ALONE should give Steven a fucking clue that the Diamonds are not going to cooperate and do what he wants and it is likely by forcing his family to stay here until he sulks and cries at White Diamond enough to cure the corrupted Gems, they run the risk of being taken away from him and killed (or worse. . .)

As much as I love Steven universe, what you said about Steven not asking questions was true. Sometimes I hear something that NEEDS an answer and any logical person would question that if they were in that situation, but instead we have to wait 70 episodes just to get an answer to something that should’ve been answered in the episode it was brought up in. Cool vid dude.

Which I always found odd because that's the exact same problem people had with adventure time that made them drop it for Steven universe. People complaining they want to see the original story finish and not the side stories or "filler" stuff. SU is arguably worse since like was mentioned in this video you have multiple 5 episode mini arcs where 1 or 2 episodes are just straight up filler. SU has filler episodes in its filler arcs that are filler for the actual plot but then go on to say how long it takes for AT to address older plot points.
And dont forget that half of those episodes are boring pieces of shite like the ones with Sadie's fucking band.

Oh fun fact, the episode where pearl trains connie/stephonnie is actually animated by studio Trigger. That's why it looks objectively better than most, if not all of the episodes.
@I have an incredibly small penis, but My bad. You're correct on that! I actually talked with a friend and he corrected me some time ago. Trigger actually helped with the boards and the animation went overseas to the Korean studio. Visuals look insanely better than what they normally look like but the story is still somewhat lacking nonetheless.
If the whole show was animated by Trigger, th the show wouldve achieved God status animation-wise but hella lacking in story

That's right. A good chunk of episodes have been outsourced to several different animation studios. In another video I watched on it, all these studios have to go by is the storyboards. At least as far as how the characters look.

I'm glad that SU: Future has started to address some of these issues, with a regular weekly air schedule and characters growing off screen. Now I just hope that they'll actually show all the characters in the intro on screen with lines and everything
The ending was slightly disappointing. Corrupted(??) Steven took about thirty seconds to take down, when it was the highlight of the series and the build-up of pretty much the whole series.
The characters Pearl, Bismuth, Amethyst, Lapis, Peridot, Spinel and Greg just got an episode each and were shown a little in other episodes. The whole Corrupted Steven thing didn't do anything, it didn't give Steven any lasting memories, like maybe a scar from the corruption, or not being fully uncorrupted. Steven just got off scot-free with 'the power of love' which happened too much in this show.
We finally see that all these things HAVE affected Steven, and all the trauma, being so close to death multiple times, watching his loved ones get hurt and poofed, even shattering someone, did something. And 'being there for Steven' just made it all go away.

i honestly want to get into the show, but... i'm someone who will leave if there's too much filler, and i will also not bother if the protagonist is too insufferable, which Steven in episode 1 is, the conflicts in that episode is either too poorly explained, not given proper attention by the protagonist, or just completely lame
i keep asking when Steven stops being insufferable, and starts to resemble a real character instead of just a bare-bones baby tantrum trope character, and everytime i'm met with absolute silence, so i'd like to ask, genuinely...
when do i start to get an actually good protagonist and is there a "Watch, Skip, or Skim" list of all the episodes that i can use as a guide?
I don't see how he was very annoying really. Just...kid like. and I thought the conflict in episode 1 was established quite well. Show gets better as things go along but maybe a good episode to start would be 'a giant women'

Every single bomb has more and more filler episodes.
I think at this point most people are heavily disenchanted with the series, are so tired of how long it takes any plot point to get resolved, how much filler there is, and the sharp dips in animation quality, so I'd imagine most people actually share your opinions at this point.
It seems like you're the only one here who knows his opinions aren't unique.

The pacing of the show has just slowed down a lot in recent seasons. Before season 5 or so, the pacing was much more snappy, yet it wasn't too fast to the point of being rushed. There was more build up and it made the reveals more exciting. The pacing has slowed down a lot since then due to recent episodes being more filler-ish, as well as Cartoon Network's awful scheduling for the show. I haven't watched some of the recent episodes because of how slowed down it got. I mean, the show did start out with filler, but upped the ante after several episodes. I don't think the show is trash now, but it's seeing a slow decline, and if the Crewniverse don't pull together, the show could tank pretty hard pretty soon.
Jaey Lopidas Exactly though I think the show always had this problem. Things happening now should have happened in the past. They always stall some events or find a way to put it off. Sometimes they don't explore something that could have led to huge character development. This goes for beach city and gem episodes.
Cartoon Network's Executives seem to think that Kids Shows=Simple which is why they are pushing for more Teen Titans Go and the shitty Ben 10 and making Steven Universe into filler

It'd be easier for them to explore other characters without trying to shoehorn in Steven. Though that episode kinda does have the issue of them not being themselves and it also goes into them being careless. It definitely could have been better.
I love this show because of its themes for children. Teaching children about love, anxiety, healthy relationships, compassion is really important. I do think this show could have benefitted a lot from being independent from CN and handled with more care in the art direction.
I also like propaganda aimed at children.

It was such a shit show and then they botched that mental health message so badly. Defeating Corrupted Steven with a hug? In 30 seconds? How about addressing that Steven was preaching about change and how good it was in the movie then refusing to let people leave. But when he leaves everyone's gotta be okay with that. Or when he treats everyone like shit and then everyone excuses it because he was sad. I just sat there saying: "holy shit Sugar, don't cut yourself with that edge" the entire time.

Cola Laser Nothing was botched though. The mental health message was done well. The corrupted steven confliched was sort of rushed when it was resolved. But compare it to the white diamond convlict resolution. It's certainly not that bad really, especially in comparison. People with steven's issues may ignore advice, including in steven's case his own past advice. Teenagers say a lot of stuff they don't mean. There emotional like that you know. Seriously it took a while for the others to pick up on the fact that something was wrong with steven.

I liked Steven Universe when the plot was happening, but that wasn't often enough. The pacing was terrible, some characters really needed more time in the spotlight to develop, and there were potentially great stories or important plot points that were either glossed over (like Lars in space) or finished quickly and anticlimactically. I still watched the whole thing. Still enjoyed it, too. But it's thereabouts a 6.5/10.
I honestly didnt like most if the straight couple relationships, I felt like rebecca shamed men, and basically destroyed any straight relationship.....

Dunno if you've seen it, but I think Amphibia (created by Matt Braly, who was a storyboard artist on SU in the first season) actually managed to do its thing of having mundane episodes centered around townspeople problems as well as worldbuilding and plot in a much more harmonious balance that actually lead into each other.
While with SU it felt like more of the side episodes were disposable than they should have been, in Amphibia, even the more OK side episodes genuinely add something to the character arcs, world or plot buildup. It's still mostly on one main character, but shifts the perspective more often.
Man watching Steven universe after it came out fully makes it way better, I binged it and loved it all the way through

I love this show, and at the moment I would call it hands down my favorite show, but god damn did you nail every little frustration I have with it perfectly.
The off-model moments never offended me as much only because those aren't the kinds of things I pay as much attention to. However the pacing, Steven's idiotic aversion to follow up questions and the amount of side-story "filler" (I feel like calling it that is too derogatory as the characters and their development is what I engage with the most but I don't have a better word to use) in combination with the GOD DAMN DIARRHEA-BOMB RELEASE SCHEDULE make me want to tear my hair out lately. I understand not having episodes without Steven is part of it all being from his perspective, rather than a third person perspective, but I wholeheartedly agree that it could be better executed.
If cartoon network could get off their fucking ass and stop shooting up teen-titans-go this show would be so much closer to perfect. I love these videos because you approach your topics with genuine objectivity and appreciation. Thank you very much for all the work you put into this series.

I don't believe criticising Steven Universe is particularly brave, at least not right now. Over the last months there were dozens of videos doing exactly what Scott did, including adressing the same points - which, to be fair, are the major flaws of the show, but it does feel repetitive when your timeline is flooded with "The problem with Steven Universe" videos that are mostly the same. None of thos videos got that much shit, at least not more than usual.
Maybe if this criticism was in 2014-2015, when the show was at its most relevant, it would be different. But nowadays the SU fandom has grown stale, probably moved out to something like Doki Doki Literature Club. All of the horror stories that I see people talking about, like the girl who tried to kill herself, happened years ago.
People have to stop paiting the SU fandom like some sort of dangerous monster. It used to be. Now that monster is fat, old and dying.
I face with anxiety and depression but this show just gives me more of it.
