For people playing solo, then yeah it probably was a chore.
But my friend brought his Switch to campus and we all had an absolute blast unlocking characters (and laughing at each other when we were killed by the nutty AI). I think that's what Sakurai intended: for some characters to be unlocked in your down time alone, and for others to be unlocked while just having a good time with friends. After all, isn't that what Smash is all about?

The thing about the "put this character in the game Sakurai REEEEEE" issue you were talking about, with everyone in that character's category being fair game, is that that ship has already sailed. Ice Climbers appeared in a game Nintendo made in 1985 that people hadn't even played in 2001 when Melee came out. To top it off, they announced fucking Piranha Plant. If PP, literally just a random mob, is able to be put into Smash, the argument is there for pretty much everything.

Isn’t that kinda weird? I mean, it was released around the same time as Metroid II: Return of Samus (also for the Game Boy), yet _that_ game isn’t just acknowledged by later entries but is actually integral to the plots of Super Metroid, Metroid Fusion, and Metroid: Other M (sorry for reminding you of that game’s existence). It even got a remake for the 3DS not that long ago. And yet, outside of being released for the 3DS Virtual Console, Of Myths and Monsters never gets mentioned or referred to anywhere official. Maybe it’s because it kinda had a throwaway plot? I can’t even remember much about the plot. Some random being from the underworld tries to repeat what Medusa did, I think, but I can’t remember anything else about it.

So she has him fight the Fortress Guardians, who she had protect the Treasures, to retrieve them and fight off Orcos.
But yeah...,strange it's only been acknowledged a month before KIU's release by being released on the Virtual Console.

But from what I've read online, it isn't a bad game at all. Quite good for Game Boy standards.
But oh man, what I wouldn't give for a port of Uprising on the Switch. I mean, the Switch has the Joy Sticks to compensate. Personally I had no problem with the way it controls on the 3DS, as I used buttons for camera control, but it would be a lot better if they took advantage of the Switch's graphical and gameplay fidelity.
Too bad Sakurai's answer to a port or sequel was a big fat NO.

The idea with the warp star is that it can warp through space time if it reaches it's maximum speed. The battleship thing happened because it didn't have enough time to build up speed.

Ridley was also a main series villain and had a following since melee. Waluigi is recent and temporary.
I wouldn't really call waluigi "recent". He is a pretty silly character choice all things considered but that doesn't rule him out completely

Ridley's the primary recurring villain of an entire B-list Nintendo franchise that only had one other representative at the time. He's appeared in every single Metroid game bar weird spin-offs like Hunters and Federation Force, and has been an iconic Nintendo villain for over 40 years, to the point of appearing in multiple Smash Bros opening cutscenes.
Waluigi made his debut as a minor character in Mario Tennis, and has solely appeared in spin-off games for the Mario franchise since. He has never been the star of his own game as an antagonist or protagonist, has very little in the way of history or moveset inspiration, and doesn't bring anything new to the table for a franchise that already had ten representatives before DLC.
Piranha Plant (the most recognizable non-Bowser Mario villain, unique moveset options), Captain Toad (own game series, represents iconic Toads), Paper Mario (own game series, obvious moveset/gimmicks), Cappy Mario (recent star in a successful game, obvious moveset/gimmicks), King Boo (Luigi's nemesis, represents iconic Boo enemies), or Echo Fighter Birdo (easy addition) would ALL be more logical Mario additions than Waluigi.

I have to respectfully disagree about the “appeared only in one game” argument, and the dismissiveness in regard to Waluigi. Waluigi only appears in party games, so being a playable character would make sense. It comes down to Sakurai not wanting to do it, and I’m fine with that because the guy works hard and if he’d rather have fun making Piranha plant, I can’t be mad at him because he’s the one bringing us this game, and it’s a good game.

Fire Emblem characters are game-original characters. Marth had that OVA once upon a time, but just because they have an anime-esque character design doesn't mean they are anime characters anymore than Snake having realistic graphics in his game makes him a live-action actor.
Goku is a manga-original character, who happened to get an anime, movies, and fighting games based on him. If they add Goku into Smash, they're opening an eternal, agony-filled gateway of "WHERE'S NARUTO/ICHIGO/JOJO 4 SMASH GOKU'S THERE" and then Smash, which was exclusively a crossover party game consisting of gaming icons, will more or less lose its identity. Heck if yer gonna add Goku, might as well add Spongebob he has a game too.

So, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS is _technically_ just a port of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U (or vice versa). There _are_ some observable differences, such as StreetSmash in the 3DS version and Master Fortress in the Wii U version. There are even some ways the 3DS version is superior. These include Rainbow Road, the Pac-Man stage (which is vastly superior to the Pac Land stage in the Wii U version and in Ultimate), and Smash Run (which is vastly superior to Smash Tour in the Wii U version). However, the Wii U version also has some improvements over the 3DS version. They are collectively referred to by fans as Smash 4. So Smash Ultimate _is_ officially considered the fifth game in the series, not the sixth.
This is consistent with how other series are numbered even when including ports, handheld versions, updated versions, collections, rereleases, remakes, or emulated versions.

I just wanted Ashley to be a playble character not only because I like her, but mostly because I wanted more Wario characters in the game. And of all of them, she seemed to be the one with the best chances. I would've been equally happy if Jimmy T or Mona or someone else from WarioWare were in the game... Heck, even Captain Syrup would of been cool and I barely know her! But judging that they barely added anything from the Wario series in general... Yeah, that's just not what they were looking for.
Agreed, Wario is shockingly underrepresented considering how long his various series have existed entirely independent of Mario.
Me personally, my Wario pick would definitely be 9 volt. His whole moveset would just be references to a bunch of different Nintendo franchises and I feel like he'd be the most unique one to pick from the WarioWare series. But I'd be fine with anyone honestly.

Honestly I wanted Waluigi in smash not for memes, but because he has so little. Only showing up in sports, spinoffs and party games. I love Waluigi as a character like Luigi he's an underdog character, but he's got this "Bitch I'm fabulous and I do what I want" attitude that we see in the games that give him some spotlight that I adore. I'm just sad the memers and complainers had to ruin any chance of him showing up as a character for everyone.
Also my DLC guess is Travis Touchdown from No More Heroes he's had 2 games and a new one coming out (I forget when exactly) so it would be a good idea to drum up intrest in him and not a lot of people would expect it.

literally the gripe with online is fixed by setting it to a 2 person limit. Then there is no waiting in line and you can swap your character whenever you want. It's.. not rocket science.

You have to remember. This is a animation. Once something has been put in the video it would take either animating a whole new scene, which would probably take more time than it's worth.
I just want to say that I genuinely love Waluigi. He started as a meme for me, but nearly 10 years ago and had it nothing to do with smash. His gangly-ass limbs and over the top acting are enjoyable and I relate his oddness to the way I entertain my friends. I'd love to see him in the game, even if I never mesh with how he plays because honestly, he's just a fun boy.
That being said, I'm fine either way, it's always fun to see him pop out of a trophy and reflexively shout "My boy! My beautiful boy!"
