Roger Joseph Manning Jr. is an American power pop and electronic rock musician, singer, and songwriter with a prolific career in the industry. Roger’s career began as early as 1989, when he began arranging string, brass, wind, and vocal ensembles for Jellyfish, the first band he co-founded.
As his time with Jellyfish came to an end, he began his second co-founded band, Imperial Drag. Imperial Drag was together from 1994-1997 and saw overwhelming overseas success, particularly in England and Japan. At the same time, Roger co-founded The Moog Cookbook, which was started solely as a means to have a forum to express his and his partner’s love for the bygone era of vintage synthesizers and exotic keyboards. It was this duo that lead to his longtime relationship with Beck Hansen.

Spilt milk is an absolute masterpiece
Hi Rees Broomfield it certainly is! I love Bellybutton so much as well!
Produce Like A Pro indeed! Thanks for all the great videos. Listening to Jack Douglas talk about the Lennon sessions has been really inspiring.
Hi Rees Broomfield Thanks ever so much my friend!! Yes, Jack is incredible!!
Yeah, and I loved Monsterpiece Theater too, hosted by Oscar.
Jellyfish is one of the most underrated bands of all time. Their albums are close to perfect.
Completely agree.
I agree 100% Dre Batist!
@@kevincornell9027 agreed 100%!!
@Blood Curdling Yes!!
One of the first four CDs i ever owned. The eponymous album’s first note takes me back to being Twenty in a fraction of a second. People compare Russian Hill to Nick Drake’s Riverman. To me, Jellyfish sounds like July 1990,. Oooh, Roger just mentioned Jan Hammer (Checkout “oh Yeah”). I’m going to stop gushing now!
I nominate Roger Joseph Manning Jr. for best T-Shirt ever on Produce Like A Pro!
Haha yes, he may have won!
He's got my vote !
@@nonolaporte3195 Woot! Woot!
Wilma and Betty, oooh yeah 😃
Jellyfish, ftw. Those two studio records still stand up strong. Roger's music has been the soundtrack of my life
Michael Battista yes!! I’m a huge fan!! I’m that was pretty obvious! Haha
@@ajconstantine3593 I LOVE that album. I was crushed when Jellyfish broke up and couldn't get enough of their individual parts. Imperial Drag was amazing. Spyder and Overnight Sensation and of course Man in the Moon.....okay okay all of it. But I'm a fanboy for a that stuff
@@ajconstantine3593 Yeh ,that imperial drag LP ....wow ..they made retro rock sound futuristic !
Hows that for a contradiction in terms ! lol. .....what a fantastic LP huh ? i agree. Problem with getting jellyfish reunion with jason , would be they would have to allow jason as much writing time as roger and andy ....as he is at LEAST the equal of them ....cant imagine he would play 2nd fiddle again .
This guy's a legend.
Yes, he certainly is!!
“ ok we’ve arrived at the chorus, Am I going to cry out in sorrow or Am I going to cry out in joy...the point is I better cry out” ...thanks Roger...probably most succinct and best description of great songwriting I’ve ever heard!
The Posies! My god... Frosting on the Beater, what an album. Please Warren if can pin down Jason Faulkner you'd make my year. Great interview, awesome insight. Thanks Roger.
yep..Jason Faulkner.. his albums are superb.. a chat with him would be great to hear.
@@rhyscgd i think "Author unknown " is so superb ....its a rare feat that a writer can make pop music sound profound . Pop is inherently disposable , but when done well ...its the classical music of our time !!!
Yeh ...jason faulkner , i thought he topped BOTH the jellyfish Lps with "author unknown " personally .
The Posies Dear 23 is a perfect record. Dear 23 and Bellybutton were life changing for me in high school.
@@TheMichaelseymour Good album ... but, na ... not nearly on the level with Jellyfish. I still think they should've given him more input and it's too bad they didn't make more music with the guy... wish we could've had more from Jellyfish ... Faulkner is a great musician .. love his pop feel
@@Fiveash-Art well....its all subjective...as much as i loved jellyfish ...i find them to be a bit like the beatles ....more craft than inspiration ...its a hell of a craft ..but crafted nevertheless .
Faulkner had more heart in his recordings ...and less ostentatious ,self conscious displays .
I limit my intake of jellyfish these days ....as i have overplayed those LPs and might have killed my enjoyment a little .....i even thought the Imperial drag Lp was better than jellyfish ...but once again , wholly subjective analysis by me ...we like what we like !
Roger’s brain is a national treasure
He’ll give you a catchy hook
with an even catchier countermelody
not to mention his chops on a keyboard that’s a whole other beast
I grew up in the bay area. everyone musician was trying to be a star in music. They all sounded like they were trying. Along came jellyfish. With all the thousands of musicians, many very good, these guys were an inspiration to local music. Also a nod to primus and metallica, the other bay area bands that succeeded just doing their thing.
those Jellyfish albums are masterpieces, still listen to them all the time, thanks for the interview. Such a great conversation
Thanks ever so much my friend!! Yes, I'm a huge fan of Roger's work! Particularly Jellyfish!
I'm having a serious attack of euphoria. Besides seeing and hearing Roger for an hour, you guys are dropping names of all of my favorite bands - XTC, Crowded House, Blur, Beck, on and on and on. And a new RJM, Jr. project too???? Brilliant! Thank you!
Spilt Milk probably my favourite album of all time! A masterpiece.
It's a Masterpiece! I have a massive soft spot for Bellybutton!
@@Producelikeapro Get with the program Mr Huart, Spilt Milk is wayyyy better.
Roger said _"I can talk here for four hours"_
I could have easily listened to that. I love his mindset and outlook on music and being a creative musician.
Oh, and Roger is right; Steely Dan are par excellence.
We ALL took it for granted....never in a million years did any of us think it would turn out like this!
I can see him voicing foxy! I think he's going to do a great job
I am a dedicated Jellyfish fan. I searched for YEARS and found a rare single about 12 yrs ago. Thats how big a fan I am. RELEASE ANYTHING!!! I am onboard! And if Eric Dover (is involved) double my LOVE!!!
an album with Roger, Eric Dover and Tim Smith?
certainly will anticipate (although the Jellyfish fan in me of course longs for Andy to be involved, but I suspect I would have a better chance being in the band, lol).
This has to be the best interview I've ever seen on this channel. I loved every second of it. Every second. I need MOAR!!!
Hi Bobby Kane Thanks ever so much my friend!! I really enjoyed doing this interview! Roger Rocks!!
Bobby Kane I totally agree.
For great lovers of music interviews like this are like fine wine.
Roger, thanks for stopping by to chat with Warren and our Produce Like a Pro Academy. A truly wonderful interview. Warren has done so many of these interviews, but there is something truly special about this interview. Maybe it's the love of music that you both share. Maybe it's the fact that you both grew up in a certain era, listening and being influenced by certain genres and bands. Not sure. But thanks for sharing so much with us. It was a truly delightful 2 hours + spent. (Had to rewind several times to pick up a reference that I missed!) It was THAT good. Cheers!
Lem Meador wow! Thanks ever so much for the amazing comment my friend! Lem, you are an amazing asset to our musician community! You share so much and are so supportive of everyone! Thanks for all you do!!
One of the most intelligent and inspiring conversations regarding music I have witnessed in a while. Thank you. Rummaging through my record collection to find the Spilt Milk disk.
Hi Henri Brandt that’s very cool of you to say! I loved taking with Roger! He’s an lazing talent!
I came into the Jellyfish game late. By late I mean 4 weeks ago is the first time I listened to both albums. I’m 45 years old. It’s a story in itself as to why it happened.
Needless to say, I’ve become a Jellyfish family addict over the last month. Just gorging on your videos, albums on repeat, Lickerish Quartet, Glamping, more more more. Putting 2 albums together on a playlist and falling asleep…every night for the last month. Telling all my friends from high school we were so foolish to ignore these guys.
I’m so happy that RogerJoseph Manning Jr. was born. He’s my new music crush, 30 years later.
Wow! Thanks ever so much for sharing! Yes, I’m a huge fan
I've been waiting for this interview since the 90s
Hi 1canuck wow! Thanks ever so much! I hear you!!
RJM Jr is a rare golden egg of a man.
Also hint that we need more Andy Sturmer on this channel.
1canuck that would be amazing!!
Roger is the ultimate pop master, this was a very enjoyable interview and a real treat for a Jellyfish fanatic like myself.
I could listen to Roger for ages...
I watched a live jellyfish show from Germany 🇩🇪 after watching this and it was great. The whole time I’m thinking Bebop Deluxe. Now I want Warren to interview Bill Nelson!
UGH so happy to see this video - long time fan of RJM and it warms my heart to hear him name-check The Damned and John McGeogh (RIP). Great chat!
I could listen to you and Roger all day long.
This is inspiring the hell out of me !

Roger is just a great songwriter and arranger. I loved Jellyfish, and I love his solo work.

Hi Josh Young indeed! The whole first album is one of my favourite albums ever!
Jellyfish at The Waterfront Norwich Uk 1990 ! Amazing Gig! . Thanks for this interview!
WOW! One of my favorite interviews ever.... THANK you Warren and RJMJ! Can't wait to hear the new project, RJMJ!
Hi Jim Hicks yanks ever so much my friend!!
Love it! The song is everything, no matter the genre, length of song, complexity, simplicity or whatever. A great song is a great song, regardless of what you try to do with it. Now I think I'll go try yet again to see if I can write one of those things...
Roger is a great guy :) Had the pleasure to have him on my last record.
DANZBERG-OFFICIAL yes, Roger is wonderful!
I love the t-shirt Roger is wearing. Betty and Wilma.
Loved his music!! I saw Jellyfish on MTV back in early 90's and ran out and bought the album. Just recently discovered Imperial Drag and I love that album too. I would love to hear anything Roger is involved in.
55:00 "It's like the perfect pinnacle of musicianship, production and the fact that it's just close enough to the Beatles that everybody still wanted to write an amazing song." And that my friends is what music is all about. Are you sure we aren't brothers separated at birth....?
I had to pause and check out The Dukes of Stratosphear 25 o'clock. I will go check out the rest after this. I love these stories.
Vanishing Girl ....Your my Drug.....great songs.
I did not see this one coming! Thank you ! Great discussion, I was a teenager in the 60s and hearing you younger cats lamenting the lack of good songs coming out these days makes me sad but glad two guys in the upper reaches of the business at least have good taste and are striving to make good music.
Fabulous. The depth, the breadth, the sheer knowledge of many genres of music!
Beyond genius. Beyond valuable !!!!!!ty
I loved being a "fly on the wall" listening to this conversation. All my favorite bands, all the same ideas and ideals, I was right there with you two. How great to hear your discussion, thanks so much! I played keyboards in a local jazz/rock band in the 70's, progressed into Steely Dan, XTC and new wave, all the while recording music and studying audio engineering. When I first heard Jellyfish I was so inspired. It is great to see that RJMjr is as entertaining a conversationalist as he is a keyboard player and composer. Wonderful to hear you two espouse on all the very best bands and producers.
Thanks Warren! Great job!
Knew nothing about the man, but catching up. What a great personality and musician. Watched 3 videos of you together back to back. Awesome stuff to see these 2 minds discussing music. Could listen to this for days
Thanks for much for watching!

Hi Simone white we both absolutely love XTC!!
Jellyfish is discussed at 6:35......at last some discussion of this EPIC band.

Wonderful to hear!
@@Producelikeapro so when do we get Spilt milk?
Great hearing the genuine passion from both of you.
Hi Mark Holden thanks ever so much my friend!
Good stuff, Warren. Watched all three Roger Manning Jr interviews now; all excellent. By the way, The Armoury Show included Richard Jobson from The Skids not Stuart Adamson who went on to form Big Country. I was lucky enough to see Jellyfish on both UK tours and also John McGeoch with Magazine. I totally agree, he was a fantastic and much overlooked guitarist. Siouxsie undoubtedly made a mistake dispensing with his services. Keep up the good work.
This is a brilliant conversation - thanks Roger and Warren
fascinating conversation about music. agree re-mid70s to mid80s discussion.
Great conversation! Thank you for inviting Roger - one of my absolute favorites.
Neil Finn and Crowded House is one of the most underrated bands on the planet. Woodface is one of my favorite albums.

Warren, whenever i watch your videos i keep a notepad and pen close by to take note of all the gear, music and other influences you reference in your videos.
this time i've noted so many albums and band names by the 13th minute, i'll have to go listen to all of them before i can continue watching the video.
thank you for giving us this marvelous peek into the treasure chest of influences that sculpted Manning and yourself!
Hi almog bianchi wow! Thanks ever so much for that truly amazing comment!!
Warren, thank you for this wonderful interview with Roger. I thoroughly enjoyed the ample discussion on developing originality, artistry, and bringing that uniqueness to writing great, catchy pop songs. If you do interview Roger again, I would love to hear about his experience working with Jerry Finn, since there's such little information on Jerry, and Roger worked with him on many albums.

Hi mdtys yes, he does!!
You're covering so many artists I love. World Party's tour for "Private Revolution" is still on the top of my lists of best concerts I've ever seen.
Hi Mark Beeson I love World Party!! Karl Wallinger is amazing!!
So happy to see the XTC love! Can you give some videos mixing those sounds? Esp guitars? I know I’m asking a LOT. Another fantastic video Warren & co, thanks!

These Manning interviews are the highlight of my lockdown in San Diego
Warren !! This solidifies it ! I’m going to financially contribute to your channel. This was amazing. I am a HUGE jellyfish fan and roger fan. This is the kind of thorough conversation with Roger that fans have been waiting for. Please do more with him. Ask about Jack Joseph Puig and Alby Gulateen - did Aby share any Bee Gee tracking stories ? Please ask technical stuff about JJP recording the Jellyfish stuff ... etc - your content has gotten better and better. I’m almost ready to forgive u for the drum sounds on the last few ACE records ! Lol ! Thanks Warren ! Cheers

This made my day. I'm pushing 70 now so my 'ground' was the 60s and it was interesting to hear you two enthusing about the mid 70s - 80s as I felt back then, hearing so much new stuff 66-69. I have a notepad full of people to check now. It was only ten years back I got to hear and love Wondermints and from there discover Jellyfish and can you believe only two years ago I checked into XTC after Roger or Andy S name-checked them somewhere. BTW Solid State Warrior is sumptuous. Thanks for sharing the passion.

A lovely and inspiring interview - thank you!
This is an absolute treat. Even for those of us who are just admirers of good music, and might lack the technical knowledge, this is so valuable and deeply fun.
Jellyfish and Beck are my two all time favorites. What a treat to me when I saw Beck at Ohana music festival in Dana Point a few years ago. And there’s like half of Jellyfish in Beck’s band.

An excellent interview which touches so many aspects but centres on the love of music and the beauty and strength of a great song.
Both of Jellyfish's albums are the very epitome of that thoughts. And Roger Manning Jr is such a talent and been so creative in his very diverse projects.
