      @@ExploringStamps As Charles might say, "You don't look like stamp collectors." Actually I had to laugh a little when Charles said, "He looked like a stamp collector." At one time there was a stereo typical look of a stamp collect, the short sleeve dress shirt, baggy dress pants, the briefcase, little disheveled and normally an older person. I guess you just knew the look when you saw it. To the point, back to 2006 I went to Washington DC for the National Stamp Show with my kids. As a single dad, a lot of the vacations I took with them involved going to stamp shows. The kids also attended stamp meeting at our local club. So I there was in DC back in 2006 with my 11 and 13 year old children for yet other sfamp show. We decided to take the DC subway train from the hotel near Dupoint Circle to the convention center. I was wondering if we were on the right train to get to the stamp show and my kids both said, "Dad look around, who do you see riding this train?" I thought, oh my gosh, they were right, you can tell a stamp collector by their looks. But that was in 2006. I don't think this is true any more, especially because of collectors that look like you guys.

    This was a wonderful episode of #philately with Charles, Michael, and yourself. Not only was it incredibly interesting I found the passion exhibited by all three of you very emotional at times; which speaks volumes about the health of philately! When young men like yourselves (unlike myself) are so passionate about stamp collecting it is the strongest evidence yet that Philately is thriving and here to stay for well beyond my lifetime. BTW, I think the price will be $15.3 million. Thanks Graham for hosting this episode about the Magenta.

    Good morning I just finished watching your conversation about the most expensive stamp in the world with Mike and Charles I am a fan of the noble spirit and I've won several auctions they have awesome stuff so when Michael introduced himself representing Noble spirit I was even more excited to hear the conversation how stimulating it was I'm a very new stamp collector i dabbled in stamp collecting in my childhood but nothing serious so when the pandemic hit I found myself on eBay in the stamp section as I was browsing and the next thing I knew I was bidding on auctions and winning and a philatelic was born. I'm a huge fan of anything pre 1800 first day covers and searching for sock on nose I first learned about sock on nose on one of your episodes I've been a fan of your exploring stamps Channel for about a year now I have seen many of your videos and I love them all and I've learned so much from you and I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge and giving me a better understanding of what it is to be a stamp collector so don't be surprised in the future if you hear from me because I have many questions and Curiosities on the art of stamp collecting my guess for the most expensive step in the world will be nine million eight hundred thousand dollars can't wait for the big day of the auction to see what the stamp goes for keep up the excellent work and look forward to seeing more videos your stamp buddy Ralph

    Wow that’s awesome! I just started stamp collecting this month. I have around 200 which is a good start. I have a lot of J.F.K. stamps and a few books with Australian and Portuguese stamps. I tried looking all of them up but some stamps I couldn’t find online or there was very little history about them, but I enjoy them. My most rare/expensive thing is not really a stamp but the letter cover it’s on. It’s from the search for Amelia Earhart. I also have the 4 stamps of Amelia Earhart’s alleged crash in the Marshall Islands. I can’t wait to collect more stamps and to watch more of your videos! #philately

I would probably break that money up into several purchases, then go on a vacation to recover, haha. Today, I have a local auction for a Penny Black that is up to $130 that I keep looking at, but with the premium, etc. I will probably spend my money on groceries this week... • @ExploringStamps

    The stamp is dated 4th April 1856. That's 165 years ago last month. The stamp shows a figure[behind the cancelations which can't be seen] if someone could actually delete the cancelations and reveal the figure of what it is...that would be quite amazing. Can any of you with photoshop or Corel Draw ..hey Graham have a try. I think its not ugly at all due to the real stamp image being blotted out. If you reveal the true image i think the stamp would be quite nice. Its a Octagon stamp too...are there other octagon stamps out there? if this is the only one 8 sided then that adds to the value.

      When this sale was announced, I e-mailed the curator of the Queen's collection, asking if he would recommend the purchase to complete Her Majesty's collection. But he said they will not be bidding, saying "when it was last sold we very briefly considered whether a recommendation to Her Majesty might be made, but very quickly came to the view that no attempt to acquire the stamp would be feasible. We took the view then, as did anecdotally King George V when offered the stamp, that the likely cost would be prohibitive." It would certainly be an expensive space-filler ... !

    Graham, I don't know if you enjoy comic books. But you should take a look at the story "Donald Duck and The Gilded Man". The story was first published by Dell in Four Color #422 (September-October 1952). The story references the the legendary 1856 British Guiana 1c magenta where Donald Duck is a knowledgeable stamp collector. Take a look!

    What would happen if it sold for less than the Treskilling Yellow? Would that mean it wasn't the most valuable stamp any more or would it still be the most valuable stamp as it sold for $9.5 million last time?
    I think it will sell for about $12.5 million though.

    • @ExploringStamps
      @ExploringStamps  3 роки тому

      What a great question! I would think it gets demoted... it would no longer be the most valuable stamp and the Treskilling Yellow could take the title, although I think the last time it was bought the winning bid was kept confidential.

    $16.2m inclusive of buyer's premium but exclusive possible NY sales tax is my guess. That would be a $13.5m fall of the hammer price.

      @@ExploringStamps I don't think it will reach that high, but it was just easy maths based on your subscribers. But like any auction you only need two people that will pay over the odds to fight it out. You see it on ebay. Things go for well under if only 1 person is interested and people pay over the odds if they are competing with others and are desperate to win (forgetting the actual value for the item)

    The collectibles market has gone bonkers over the past year or so, so I could see this stamp equaling or exceeding the high-end estimate. But, I'll be more conservative and guess $13.5 million as the full cost of the stamp.
