Dover has alot of history that is worth exploring and some natural beauty spots. We have one of the best castles in the country that have links to WW2 and medievil history etc. There are also tunnels which people love exploring on the hills. The Grand shaft is closed to the public but they do have open days. We also have some beautiful cliff walks. The council has made some improvements to the town and the community is trying to make things better. We also have a lovely beach where you can see France from, which can be busy on sunny days. Wd also have some beautiful parks Kersney Abbey and Russell Gardens for example. Yes the town has its problems and not a great number of shops but what town is perfect? You missed most of Dover! I love my town despite its reputation. Next time ask a local who loves Dover and they will show you the best places. This negative reputation is not helping our town. You can tell that I am passionate about Dover, its because I grew up here and have a input into making Dover better in some ways. I think Dover is unfairly judged most of the time. As I said the negativity doesnt help. Its not just about the boats..

Nice one. I do wonder where the media gets these "worst in UK" lists from! I've lived in nearby Maidstone since 2001, so Dover is an easy visit for me.
I've visited all the coastline between Dungeness and Dartford, and Dover Seafront is my favorite now. Never too packed out, and nice to see the Channel swimmers setting off here too. And the little kiosk on the front, used to be called Pebbles, is a lovely little refreshment stop. Western Docks has been redeveloped since the Seacats and, before them, the Hovercraft packed up. Very nice it is too.
Dont forget, its the Gateway to Europe, and was, until the P&O debacle, a major local employer. The town centre has had some revamp, and that Wetherspoons, The Eight Bells, is not a bad one. Yes. A thumbs up to Dover for a visit, 👍✔💯🇬🇧😉

      How does Maidstone compare?

    • @InvictaView
      @InvictaView 14 днів тому

@@EdBrinton A $64,000 question! You'll just have to visit the County Town one day and see for yourself.
For people that live and/or work in these so call crap towns, we do not see it how these reporters and vloggers report it.
I've lived in Maidstone since 2001, as I came here for a job, which I'm still doing today. If it was as grim as nearby central Chatham, where I lived for 18 months before Maidstone, I'd have moved away, but it suits me fine. (Chatham has very slowly recovered from the Naval Dockyard closure, which was forty years ago this year!).
As with all these videos you're doing, I consider myself qualified to comment, as I only comment on the places I know and have visited or lived and worked in.
Barring some hamlets and tiny villages in Kent, there's no where hereI don't know or haven't visited, eaten or drank in.
I'm guessing your an outsider looking in, and, it appears you're doing a good job reporting what you find on your visits. As with all my travelling in the UK/Europe for the past 22 years, its all about those finds, good, bad or indifferent on your visit, and what impression that town or city leaves on you!
Believe you me, and I'm qualified to speak, and I'll be shot down for it no doubt, the North/South divide in the UK is very real. For many people returning to there hometowns or city's in the North, they're now unrecognisable compared to 20-25+ years ago. But its our corrupt governments own doing, with so many people having had to move away for work, this leaves deserted towns/cities and many vacant properties and run down areas. But slowly but surely, with the opening of the EU borders in 2003, and the migrant crisis because of our involvement in the Middle East, and then it was Brexit and then Covid. Its all been brewing up for many years, to a point where they've all been 're-populated'. Yes, it's good and bad, and there's no going back now with what's happened to our country. Its all happened in one generation, right under our noses, and its way too late do anything about it.
I think you'll be making videos full time on the demise of our UK towns and cities lol! Maybe you should change your format and go and find the best towns and cities in the UK! Does such a thing exist anymore?
Anyway, do come to visit Maidstone. There are two Wetherspoons here as well, which is the only place you'll get half decent fish & chips in the town, as the no.1 chippie here shut down last year!
And if you visit on a day that I'm about, I'll buy you a drink in my favorite coffee shop! 👍🇬🇧✔💯😉

Your just looking at the town centre, just off there is St. James shopping complex which most of the town shops relocated, also too to Whitfield.
Dover has some excellent parks..Wetherspoons is not what you discribed, I was there this afternoon, I don't do pubs, but it was very friendly...
Sadly the weather was not good in July, August was good, the seafront was bustling with tourist, watersports, walkers and cyclist...The white cliffs what missed off is teeming with tourist taking in the famous cliffs and countryside...
As to littler, I personally think our local council do a good job in keeping the town clean.

I finished my A' levels at DGBS in the early 1990s and could not wait to leave to attend university. Never a Dover resident per se as my family lived in one of the pretty villages on the White Cliffs but the town's folks were always poor (you did not visit Tower Hamlets, Buckland, Aycliffe residential estates etc, it's shocking.). Dover itself was terrible back then and sadly has not improved. I can see they have invested a lot on the market square (new paving etc.) but there is nothing you can do. I also noticed all the retail banks have now closed (Barclays, Lloyds, NatWest, HSBC). First work experience was with Barclays Bank in 1989! This is not unexpected with online services but wow! The high street is dead and it's not coming back. In Dover or elsewhere. Back in the early 1990s, locals blamed it on the opening of the Channel Tunnel for the loss of business activity and the great recession but this was a poor excuse. Tourists have never visited Dover (despite the Castle) but always travelled on to Canterbury and London via the 1978 Jubilee way bypass in the eastern Docks. Moreover, during the 1980s, locals always went shopping to Canterbury during weekends with many others from towns and villages in Kent doing likewise. Dover town centre was (and is) of little interest. It's cut-off and totally isolated from the port. There has never been much industry either. Not the worst of places in the UK though. River, to the north and Kearsney Abbey gardens, for example, are nice, green areas. The girl's grammar school is highly rated. Nice properties along Connaught avenue. The sea front is Ok. There is a Castle. Try places up north! Rotherham comes to mind.

omg you were so paranoid lol, you went to Dover already with the mindset of that list, which was made in 2017! Like all the other seaside towns it has it's problems, but quite a few of the shops moved to the new shopping centres, one in town, one on the outskirts. You missed some beautiful historical buildings in the town as well as a lovely park and river walks. On the whole people in Dover are very friendly and kind. There's probably some of the quiet villages like Chartham and Minster-in-Thanet - but the rest of is pretty rundown. For supposedly "the garden of England" - it's getting built upon with major housing projects for new builds. There's little job opportunities for young people - hence why they tend to move away. It's pretty grim in certain places : Medway towns, Isle of Sheppey, Ramsgate, Margate and Dover.
