This movie totally changed my life... it's such crazy timing that it's being re-released right now... My Dad made me watch this film with him when it came out. It was one of the few times I ever saw him cry. I think he related to it because I WAS Emilio's character at the time, and he was like Martin's. After watching The Way, his ultimate dream was to walk the Camino once he retired. He died of cancer just 8 months before he could fulfill his dream. I ended up walking the Camino the year after my Dad died. I walked the 800km and got his name on the Compostela. It was a pretty miserable trip because of how deep in grief I was... but it helped me process in a way I wouldn't have been able to otherwise. I decided to walk the Camino again last year (2022), now that I'm in a better place. It was hands down the best experience of my life. I now recommend it to everyone I know. It really is a magical journey 💖
You video about the Camino is the best one I ever seen. You catch all the real feeling about this route. I just want to sey about you in my previous comment, but I don't want to push to many buttons and here you are!!! 💞
So very sorry about your Dad. I am glad you did it again with a new mindset. Buen Camino Pilgrim🤗 I walked my first Camino last year (Sept/Oct), see my post above.
Stephanie, I loved your documentary on your pilgrimage! I'm preparing/psyching myself up to do my third Camino (I'm pushing 70), and I've been watching UA-cam videos. Most of them are inadequate, because the narrator is so wrapped up in filmmaking that they aren't really there. Perhaps because this was your second camino, and because you're an experienced filmmaker, yours is the only documentary I've seen thus far that captures the beauty and essence of the walk. I would encourage everyone to look up Stephanie Hurtado and watch her video. I actually think it hits the core even better than "The Way".
Back in 2011 I was at home in the UK waiting for my Taxi at 3am to take me to the airport for a 6am flight to Spain to walk my first Camino. I had only heard about the Camino weeks before and decided on a whim to just go for it and see how far I'd get, I literally knew nothing about it . Flicking through the 24 hour news channels I stopped on CNN , they were interviewing Martin Sheene and his son about the movie " The Way" ! I couldn't believe what I was seeing, weeks before I'd never heard of the Camino and here I was watching the trailer for a movie about the Camino whilst waiting to go on Camino myself. It was a hairs on the back of the neck moment and for me something I'll never forget. I walked my first Camino and eventually saw the movie about 6 months later, they did a good job, it's a very watchable movie and for whatever reason always brings me to tears. I've walked many Caminos since, but will never forget the first or that coincidence . Buen Camino
Thank you Emilio for making this movie. It changed my life. I walked my first Camino in September 2021 and then was lucky enough to walk my second Camino with our youngest daughter through Portugal in 2022. I am convinced the world would be a better place, if all of the world leaders were required to walk the El Camino de Santiago de Compostela.
I told a friend of mine about this movie. He said, "The Way? I don't like religious stuff." I said, "It's not about religion; it's about life and living."
Its about religion too actually... It is afterall The Way of St. James, this two are walking. I did the Camino, and I am not religious, but I am open to religion, so I am pretty sure that the two characters depend, on the way of St. James to find themself. Emilio even says it on minutes 8:09
@@DavidHRyall It is, watch the Producers Emilio even say it on the interview... And yeah I own the movie and watched it like 6 times now. El Camino is pretty religious by itself yes to even though its been more comercial latest years. I even have family at Galicia and have been weatching the local politician and experts talk about el Camino for plenty of years..
“To each their own.” When he’s ready he’ll watch it. Have you heard about The Pilgrimage by Coelho? That ways the first thing that made me want to walk El Camino. I am finally doing it in about 2 weeks. 🎒
Just saw the movie today. August 7, 2024. I went by myself in 2019 to get rid of some ptsd regarding terrorist attacks. I did the Camino Portugues. My kids were sp impressed that they all wanted to join. So, 2023 I walked it with a 15, 13, 11 and 9 year old. I was the 'guy from Holland with his 4 kids' on the way. It was such a great experience for all of us. Rhey even awaited us at the place to get out compostella. You talk about community, well, that is what my kids still talk about. We are all on this journey, but we are all helping eachother. That was so awesome. Seeing this movie today made me happy and cry at the same time. You grow from this, and definitely not to what you think in advance. And, if you can do this with those you love it is even better. Next week this Dutchman is 'forced' to go on a small pelgrimage from Tuscany to Rome by the same kids. And I already know we're all going to love it (and still wear our Sanriago shells).
The Way motivated me to walk the Camino, and it was a life-changing experience. It also pushed me to tell my own stories and make my own film about he Camino and how it changes people and shows us what's really important in life. Thank you Emilio.
Having just walked the Camino Aug 2022, we being 60 and 67, walked for 70 days, from Le Puy to Santiago, the movie The Way is so often referenced by the Pilgrams and a revival will be celebrated yet again. If you need any extras, we are here for you. Keep inspiring.
So glad to hear the film is being released again. I know from my own experience on the Camino that the film motivated so many people to walk and it changed their lives. I had the miraculous chance to meet the Estevez family at one of the albergues. Wonderful; loving hospitable people like so many of the hosteliers in Spain.
I have this movie on DVD. It is a well made, well written, well acted movie. I plan on walking the Camino Frances this Aug/Sep and “The Way” has made a significant impact on my desire to do the Camino. Thank you Emilio for making this movie. Thank your father for giving me more inspiration to make this journey.
I saw this movie in 2015, and 3 years later to the day, I announced on facebook I was making the pilgrimage and walked the Camino in 2018. I'm leaving for my second Camino in 78 days. Such an incredible experience. You miss it for a long time afterwards. The simplicity of life on the Camino is addictive. It will be my second Camino, but I don't plan on it being my last. Thank you for bringing light to this experience.
I watched this movie a couple of times before the pandemic and I loved it to its core, as it means to much to have the caliber of Martin and Emilio on it. It is beautifully written and acted and the message is unforgettable.
yo soy de España y me encantó la película, con qué mimo se hizo, con qué detalle. Yo recomiendo esta película cuando alguien tiene dudas de hacer el camino de Santiago y están encantados cuando la ven. Gracias Emilio Estévez
Hi I'm from Penang, Malaysia and I watched this movie on UA-cam in 2020 during the Covid lockdown. Love this movie very much. Was so inspirational. Did my 1st Camino by cycling from St. Jean Pied de Port back in late April 2023. Was a good 2 weeks of riding. I hope to do it again in a couple of years and this time I hope to walk it.
I have walked the Camino de Santiago seven times, different routes. I have three different men to thank for my discovery of the Camino and for inspiring me to walk it and helping me to walk it. The first one is Rick Steves because I stumbled across his PBS travel show about the Camino and northern Spain one afternoon whilst channel surfing. I was captivated by the prospect of walking the Camino and vowed to walk it ASAP. The Camino is my spiritual, religious and physical jump start every time I walk it.

Wonderful movie. Wonderful story. A story about the importance of family and friends.... In this movie 4 strangers become a family. "Friends are the family we choose!"
This movie is fantastic. I remember thinking I know a lot of people who should have this experience but didn't need to myself. I loved my career helping people/families, but their problems are so dark, I didn't see how it affected me. After a 9-month sabbatical I realized how soul crushing it was. I could have used the experience of the Camino, back in 2011. I've retired early and am moving to Spain. Perhaps I will end up doing the Camino.
Oh my gosh Emilio, you just said exactly what I said , the camino changed my attitude to social media completely, the only photo I took in the cathedral at Santiago was of my feet , it reminds me of how long I sat there in contemplation of my journey , it made me so mad watching everyone else talking a selfie in front of the alter, without actually looking at it and soaking it up. And I say the same thing now ' who are you taking that photo for?' I just returned from my second camino yesterday. Last summer I did the Camino Frances from St Jean Pied du Porte and this time I did the Caminho Portuguese from Lisbon to Santiago. My two events that motivated me to walk my camino were Paulo Coelho's book "The Pilgrimage," and The Movie "The Way." The movie is really inspiring. I can't say how many times I have watched it and told others about it. Buen Camino.
Si, hasta Leonor de Aquitania, Ricardo Corazón de León, etc realizaron el Camino de Santiago en el S.XIII. Gracias Emilio por llevar la bandera de España, la de tus abuelos, paternos.
Read about the Camino back in college in 1972 . Was at the Heartland Film Festival in Indianapolis at the Indiana Museum of Art at its first showing. Wife and I walked the pilgrimage in fall 2015 Your story of the last day of shooting at the Cathedral was amazing
What i like about the Camino. It feels safe, whether talking about the actual walking part or the hostels and albergues. The accommodation are relatively inexpensive. You get to meet some great people. I guess it was about 6 years ago, a friend mentioned the Camino after watching The Way. Maybe it was the next year, I told him, I'd be interested in doing the Camino with him. Three years ago, our Camino got canceled. Two years ago, i heard Spain was opening up and within 3 weeks, we were starting the Del Norte Camino. Last summer, i rented the movie so my mom and I could watch it, so she could see what it was about. I did the Portuguese route in April and am going back to walk the Ingles in September. I have an extra 2 to 3 weeks and may end up walking the last part of the CF?
Life changing? Yes. Have walked it three times. Walking alone is a chance to reflect; walking with others is a chance to share. Wholeheartedly agree that if more people were to walk it then there would be less political angst and sense of separation.
Great movie, great adventure. The host has to tell us that she hasn't been in the office for three years because of covid, So typical of someone from Salon!
I have walked multiple caminos starting years before the film was made. I would be very surprised if Mr Estivez knows anything about the real history of the Camino Frances. I bet he, like the majority of people, doesn't even know why it's called the Frances....(not because it "starts" in St Jean Pied de Port.)
He is so right!! A lot of americans going to the Camino, for the last 100 km, for the Compostela and Instagram photos. We dont want this! We want the Camino to remain a real Camino, not with luggage services and hostel reservations, and no Buenas in the road. They are arogant and stupid. Stay home, please, if you don't want to walk properly for your inside grow.
At the very end when Martin sheen is at the ocean he dumps the ashes. And the way he did it I thought so disrespectful the whole trail it was so important to him and so respectful to the ashes but at the end he just dumps the rest. Just like it was trash. I did not like the way he did this. Didn’t like the ending. But loved the show and inspired me.
I'd like to presume both sides, since both sides are rife with corruption and their allegiance is primarily to campaign donors instead of their constituents. Since Christianity does not answer to a political affiliation -- only truth -- our politicians would be better guided by truth as opposed to their malleable and ever-changing culturally-influenced views.

I am unable to get this movie in Region 1 on DVD. I hope they will start to produce it with subtitles/CC in Region 1.

Yes!!!!!
My favorite movie
Just completed the Camino Frances and people speak about "The Way" a lot.
🙌🙌🙌
I wonder where Emilio sees characters post 2020?
Life changing? Yes. Have walked it three times. Walking alone is a chance to reflect; walking with others is a chance to share. Wholeheartedly agree that if more people were to walk it then there would be less political angst and sense of separation.

Great movie, great adventure. The host has to tell us that she hasn't been in the office for three years because of covid, So typical of someone from Salon!
This is actually a really good movie and not about religion.
no offense, but the hostess should edit out the 'ums' and 'uh's, as they recur every nano second, and it detracts from the interview.
Sounds like you know better than all. I guess the camino is just for you. Buenas!
Why would an interviewer feel so compelled to talk so much about herself?
Just need to put the phones and technology away and go on different hikes and adventures
Maybe at the end he realised it didn't matter - the ashes were not his son
Emilo Estevez is great. Shame about the presenter

This movie had an amazing impact on my life. However I was not impressed with the Host. Sorry
The fact she had to read from the script, is disappointing. Learn your stuff m'am before an interview.
Which side of politics is he talking about I wonder
I'd like to presume both sides, since both sides are rife with corruption and their allegiance is primarily to campaign donors instead of their constituents. Since Christianity does not answer to a political affiliation -- only truth -- our politicians would be better guided by truth as opposed to their malleable and ever-changing culturally-influenced views.
Both sides
