    Great review Darren Miles. I've been interested in purchasing one myself and I think your review will go a long way towards helping me out with the Phantom 2 Vision. With all the new additions at CES I think there will be a lot to chose from in the next couple of months.

    WRONG INFORMATION ALERT:
    The drone DOES NOT after 10% fall and crash. If you have GPS on it will come back to you and hover over you.

      Mobilitytoday - This point has come up in several other comments on the thread. If you play back the review, you'll note that I was quoting another reviewer, though I haven't experienced this issue myself.

      Darren Miles
      When you do a review of a product don't quote other reviewer, TRY IT OUT or search for quality sources, especially with a widely known information like the emergency landing.

    • @DarrenMiles
      @DarrenMiles  10 років тому +2

      Fergesslich Thanks for the feedback. Keep in mind that at the time of this review, the phantom 2 Vision + had literally been released 5 days earlier and there wasn't a ton of information available.
      However, an earlier reviewer had commented that on 2 occasions the drone just shut down completely at about 15% power - though I hadn't experienced that myself, I felt it was important to mention.

      Good day. But that is wrong as well with how it response to low battery. It will not fly back and land. It will land where it's at. The only time it will fly back to home location is when you lose connection to the receiver.

    Great review Darren. Too bad about the long delay with the camera, I'm not experiencing this at all on mine. As you suggest, this might be a firmware upgrade issue.

    • @DarrenMiles
      @DarrenMiles  10 років тому

      Thanks Patrice, let me ask you a question, are you shooting in RAW or JPG? I *think* the delay may be happening because I'm shooting in RAW - haven't tested JPG as I use the lens profile correction - which requires RAW (for auto detection) so I switched to RAW before I ever took the first photo...

    • @pgaucher
      @pgaucher 10 років тому

      Hi Darren, I've been shooting RAW as well and haven't noticed a lag at all. I've updated to the latest firmware so maybe this helped. Cheers.

    I noticed the horizons are tilting in the review videos. This means you've got FPV mode on. Switch FPV off in the app and the gimble will mimic the horizon.

    Impressive review. Well done. One question: I've heard a lot of regarding the sensitivity of the gimbal and the camera being too delicate that a minor crash will destroy the camera and gimbal mechanism. Is this true? Thanks.

    • @DarrenMiles
      @DarrenMiles  10 років тому

      I've crashed the Phantom 2 once, and it came away OK. However, I don't have a ton of faith in the overall construction, not quite professional grade, but it's certainly adequate.

    Darren I agree with you 100%. I've spent 40 years as a professional pilot & most of my life I've lived here in Florida was born and raised over in Boynton Beach. During those years and while flying professionally I have scratch my head at the FAA's thinking over the last four decades countless times. I have a friend who works for the FAA out of California he's been assigned the task to look at UA-cam and other sites where people are posting commercial work using drones just in order to create a backlog of fines and discomfort for the average guy. He personally thinks it's the most ridiculous job he's ever done in his last 20 years! Since the advent of the quadcopter drone and using cameras to do minor commercial work another issue has arisen and that has been with skydivers who video you during your free fall. While they've been doing this for decades all of a sudden theres now this issue of doing commercial aerial work for profit and/or compensation even though your lift is far less then your drag so you're not really an airplane but a falling rock. It's crazy isn't it? By the way I'm not far from you I live over in Central Florida in the town of Winter Haven. Regards

    Nice review.
    I've owned the Phantom 2 w/ Zenmuse H3-2D for about 7 months and love it, but am thinking about swapping over to the Vision2+ for the additional gimbal plane and simplification of use. Only concern is losing the GoPro's 2.7K & 4K video ability. The V2+ does 1080p max.
    Not sure about your "crashing at 10 minutes batt life" comment. I think all Phantom Quadcopters have a safety "return home" feature. I've run mine down to the wire a few times and it simply made a soft landing straight down. Thankfully it wasn't over water. Sounds like you've made a nice business helping Thurston and Lovie sell houses down there. :-)

    Darren, have you had much flight experience prior to this? Wondering how is the learning curve for a brand new pilot. Also, do you find value in the prop guards? I know probably not needed for experienced. But just in case :) also, can it be programmed to return home in case the distance travelled may exceed the battery power needed?

    Darren, Great review. I have been flying the Phantom 2 Vision and unhappy, well pissed, about video quality. Watching this convinced me to go with the vision Plus.
    Very happy with the video quality now. So I can shoot better video (just for fun) from the east side of Alligator alley. Your right about taking photos and the shutter response.
    Would be nice if that was fixed.

    I have HEARD (but not verified) that an option to reduce moire is to shoot at 720P and 60fps rather than 1080P and 30fps. The recommendations I have read recommend AGAINST using 1080i to do 60fps.

    Very professional review Darren. I have the Vision 2 and am considering upgrading to the +. Is that an ipad you are using? I looked for the DJI app but couldn't find one for the ipad. FYI the Phantom uses lipo's and it's common knowledge that they shouldn't be drained below 20% of their capacity. Thanks, Scott

    • @DarrenMiles
      @DarrenMiles  10 років тому

      Thank you sir! I did a battery test and ran it until the drone stopped. DJI has built in some safe guards where you can't go that high when the battery capacity dips too low, it'll only allow you to hover a few feet off the ground... I managed to get the app on the iPad, I forget how, but it let me sync the app with the iPad and it works just fine, but better because you can actually see the shot before you take it :-)

    After you have used this vision + for awhile, how do you like it? Did you ever get the camera delay figured out? It seems strange that it takes your camera that long to take a picture. I have the vision + as well and it maybe a bit long to snap a picture but it's still under a second.

    Hi Darren Miles, Thank you kindly for your thorough review and also the nice scenery actually! Picked up a few good tips. Just a quick question. I just recieved my device PV2+ and have flown in only a couple of times. I came across something about the camera tilt that raised my concern. I noticed when I tilt the camera via the app (smartphone soft/touch buttons), it tilts quite crisply responding to every click precisely on the gimbal, however when I use the metallic looking dial on the top left hand corner on the Remote Control (just above the S2 switch), the gimbal wobbles the camera before actually tilting it up and down, sort of like a very fast nod up/down before actually tilting in the direction that I want it to go so it makes it difficult to do as smooth of a tilt or like step by step tilt as it does through the app. Almost looking like it's a bit confused before responding... Like a wobble or shake, sorry I don't know how to describe it any better.. Is this normal or is my RC dial faulty? Thanks in advance for your help. Cheers q[^_^]p

    Very well done Darren! Your overall professionalism shines thru brightly. The composition of your presentation, style, etc. My P2V+ arrived 2 weeks ago and I'm still on cloud nine. I love it. QUESTION for the expert tho: As an avid photog I can see the value in a UV or polarizing filter on the P2V+. It's available for the Phantom Vision, but not for the PLUS. Anything fashioned right on the lens may effect the gimbal. Any ideas Darren? Have you tried any filters?

    • @DarrenMiles

    Great review Darren, thanks! My wife is a realtor and I'm a home inspector so one of these will work for us both. My question is regarding wi-fi. I have read on other sites that maintaining the signal in populated areas is a challenge as other routers etc. interfere. I am sure you take your RE photos in suburbs etc. Any issues with the phantom not communicating or doing the dreaded flyaway?

    • @DarrenMiles
      @DarrenMiles  10 років тому

      So far no issues at all, whenever it disconnects it'll attempt to return to where it took off and 1 of 2 things will happen, it'll either reconnect with the remote or it'll descend and land where it took off and land. However, If you're in a dense area and you've flown overt a few buildings or trees and it disconnects, it may fly into something upon its return :-)

    Very good review. You didn't mention anything about audio. I'm guessing audio is not possible during the video filming process, due to the motor and prop noise. Is that correct?

    As for the issue you talked about not being able to keep oriented. You can with the computer software enable the ICU on the S2 switch of the Phantom Controller. Then you can enter Home Lock mode with the S2 switch and the phantom will remain oriented with the home takeoff location no matter what direction the phantom is pointed. While in home lock pulling back on right flight stick will always bring the phantom back towards the home takeoff location.
    Also keep in mind that according to the FCC you cannot use the phantom 2 Vision+ for commercial use. We should get some actual regulations hopefully sometime this year and hopefully have an options for commercial use. People seem to be claiming they can get around this by saying they cannot charge for the photo's, however they are charging for editing the photo's from the P2V+ that they deliver to their clients.

    • @DarrenMiles
      @DarrenMiles  10 років тому

      Thanks for the orientation tip!
      It's still grey - i.e. the regulations - the FCC brought a suit to the supreme court about commercial usage - but the supremes shot it down. It is in limbo, but seriously, what is the issue with using a drone to take photos for commercial purposes? I'm just taking photos from a different perspective.
      I think the bigger issue is potential misuse and flying these things into commercial airliners - which has already ALMOST happened. But banning them for commercial use to take photos seems very odd to me as I have a hard time understanding the why behind that one...

      Thanks Dave, really appreciate that. I think there's a module to plug in way points, you may want to check DJI's website. As for what to charge agents, all I'll say is tread carefully until the FAA writes their regulations on the commercial use of drones. Local markets determine pricing conditions.

    Would you say that the Phantom 2 plus video quality is significantly better than say the original Phantom Vision 2 camera (using an aftermarket Gimbal) such as a RotorPixel ?

    • @DarrenMiles
      @DarrenMiles  10 років тому

      Probably not, especially if you attach a higher quality video camera like the go pro 3 black with its higher resolution and bit rate. What's so appealing about the Phantom 2 Vision + is that it's an all in one package and the video and image quality are good enough.

    • @DarrenMiles

      Gromov,
      Low light shooting is NOT a strong suit of the Phantom Vision 2 + - the sensor is really small and noise will rear it's ugly head very quickly in low light. If you need a low light solution - you may have to spend a lot more money that can handle a larger camera with a larger sensor...

    great review, very professional. I own a vision + and was thinking of going into the restate market giving sellers an added advantage over the competition being able to get perspectives you can get any other way. Frankly the DJI is such a great deal for the money, it can't be beat.
    again great review, i thought i was watching an edmunds car review on my drone. LOL Keep it up,

    Thanks Darren for a great review which helped me make the decision to buy one : ) You don't seem to have any qualms about flying near power lines, I've heard they can cause interference but maybe I don't need to worry so much.

    • @DarrenMiles
      @DarrenMiles  10 років тому

      As far as I know the power lines only cut down on the range, but if you're close by, you're unlikely to notice anything.

    can you make a video showing that it can fly more than 250 meter range? Cause i saw a video with phantom 2+ that could barely fly 100 meter on a footboll fiield, so please make a video for your statement i would be very surprised if it could fly 300 meter

    Hi Darren, thx a lot for this review. As a professional photographer, based in Germany, I asked myself, if this drone matches my demands, especially in still photography. I have a favour to ask you - is it possible for you to provide some unmodified raw-images?

    Darren
    I was thinking of getting one but now changing my mind due to all the fly away stories!
    Have you had any fly aways?

    • @DarrenMiles
      @DarrenMiles  10 років тому

      No. In fact, just the opposite. If the drone gets disconnected, it'll actually come back to where it took off and descend. When the battery gets low, the Phantom automatically cuts the power to just above hover meaning you can't fly it away when the battery's low even if you wanted to. Anyway, the short answer is NO :-)

    • @vracan
      @vracan 10 років тому

      thanks but from what I hear from the stories is that it can fly away and never come back no matter what they do even turning the tx off unfortunately! but glad to hear it didnt happen to you. How long have you had it?

    I'm curious, the video quality you see during the 1 minute clip he shows you is it literally that good on the screen you're holding? What about if you buy googles instead? Does the imagine quality get reduced or is it still the same as on the screen?

      I really can't say as I haven't used the goggles. But I will say the image is very clear on the iPad.

    Nice review, tho as a quick FYI it's a Phantom 2 not a Vision 2. First there was a Phantom then Phantom 2 Vision then Phantom 2 without the "vision" wifi camera then Phantom 2 Vision Plus. They are all the same Phantom 2 only difference is the camera platform and the Vision series uses 5.8ghz for control

    Darren - in your review it appears you're using a tablet instead of a smartphone to control the DJI Phantom 2 Vision Plus. How was this possible?
    Thanks for taking the time to do such a nice review.
    Jerry

    • @DarrenMiles
      @DarrenMiles  10 років тому

      Thanks Jerry! The Phantom 2 Vision+ is compatible with iOS, but I'm pretty sure it has to be a newer model of iPad in order to work - retina display or iPad air. I like it better because the screen is a lot bigger and it's easier to navigate, compose and take photos. It works GREAT!

    When you learn how to fly go to next level NAZA Mode. Use CL on mose on switch S2. Sl stands for Course Lock so if you point you drone one way its going to be front you can turn you drone any way you like you will always go forward as you started. I am going to make videos all tricks you can do with it. Sorry my Croatian English spelling :D

    Because of your review I bought one. After 1 week+ I've only had one good flight and one crash out of about 10 attempts. I don't trust this thing yet it doesn't want to hold gps lock. I might have been wrong about buying this. DJI seems like they have better things to do than help. Still trying to debug it but it's not RTF out of the box.

    Excellent review! However, it seems you have FPV mode turned on for the gimbal. Is this intentional? It ruins the on board videos for me. Apart from that though, I loved it and am currently saving for this Phantom :)

    • @DarrenMiles
      @DarrenMiles  10 років тому +2

      As you probably know, DJI isn't renowned for their excellent documentation in their packaging. I literally found out about the FPV mode switching after I completed the review - it's much better now :-) It's a great drone!!!

    • @Tomdomification
      @Tomdomification 10 років тому

    • @BF1GUN
      @BF1GUN 10 років тому

      Hi. Could you please explain the effect of FPV mode when switched On/Off? Thanks.

    • @Tomdomification
      @Tomdomification 10 років тому

      Bazza Hi. I don't own the Phantom (yet!), but I believe that with FPV mode turned on, the gimbal allows some horizontal movement. This is helpful if you're not flying by line-of-sight as it helps you judge the position of the Phantom, especially in turns. The video is still stabilized though, as you can see in this review. Turned off, the gimbal acts as a regular 3-axis gimbal, with full stabilization in all of those axis. Hope this helps :)

    The best independent review so far I've seen for the Vision plus! So good that i downloaded this video on full hd for review. :)
    But now im very confused. I was aiming for the Phantom 2 + gopro hero + black, but this review has reset me back. :(
    My intention is just for aerial surveys for viable location for Radio Towers, determining CLOS between them. Can the Vision Plus fulfill the same task as the Phantom 2 + gopro hero + black for this application?

    • @DarrenMiles
      @DarrenMiles  10 років тому

      Thank you for the kind words! Truth be told, the Go Pro Hero 3 Black has better video quality - especially at 2.7K, however, is it the kind of thing that the average client will notice as much as we as photogs/videogs will notice? Probably not. I'm not sure what CLOS is or how far apart they are.
      I know that the range of the Phanton 2 Vision + is about 1,500 feet, but that's in an open area without power lines - so that - I presume - has to factor into your decision making...

    • @darkanyons
      @darkanyons 10 років тому +1

      Darren Miles Thanks Darren for taking time to respond and clearing it up. Sorry for including some of our jargon here. CLOS just means Clear Line of Sight. Usually a helicopter is used for determining if a location is viable for a wireless back-haul link, a CLOS is required between radio towers. Since these drones are more cost effective compared to renting choppers, we are now considering purchasing this for the project. Aerial pictures and videos with sharp details are quite important for the assessment locations.
