I'd love to hear the people who criticize Pat try to play this tune with the amount of originality Pat put in to his solo, and also, I'd like to see all these people try to make the same amount of money, and get the same amount of gigs all around the world playing Jazz music as Pat. Don't criticize someone unless you think YOU can do it better. It has nothing to do with another guitarist that you prefer over Pat, it has to do with the fact that you chose the video to listen to this music. Don't like Pat, don't listen to him! He has nothing to lose!
Ondraus Cissell I’ve been studying Jazz four a little over 4 years from high school and today as a junior in music school, and I’ve learned that it’s those nasty attitudes where people are constantly criticizing people who are very good, saying that they absolutely suck and that some other musician is way better than them by miles, are the people killing the artform. This artform is so close to being extinct, why can’t we just support each other and help each other survive. There’s a lot people can learn from Metheny, they just need to make the choice to learn it.
you guys don't know anything about Pat Metheny or haven't lsitened to him at all then. That solo was brilliant, and it wasn't necessary to go outside that much either. Metheny was teaching classes at Berklee at 18, I'm pretty sure he knows A LOT about harmony and going outside. Just a reference, watch All the Things You are with him and Brad Mehldau in duet. It is orgasmic. Btw, kenny garrett is the best alto player in the world at the moment in my opinion. Fantastic solo.
I came here for my monthly dose of Kenny Garrett but became mesmerized by the synergy of these four guys. Pats comping and soloing with this rythmn section is brilliant.
Garrett is the man but so is Metheny. Both have chops, but even guys with blazin chops can play with musical taste. Garrets solo slow builds into it. Metheny doesn't build his solo which isn't a bad thing, he just left off where Kenny stopped. That's the beauty of jazz.
Metheny is ridiculous on the entire Pursuance album. The solo on Lonnie's Lament is ridiculous. The real Kenny G is seen on this video not that other dude from Washington but the brother from Detroit, MI. Jazz at it's best!
Pat Metheny is a "legend." He's no Johnny come lately. Dude has been playing guitar as a youngster and he's like what? Maybe 40 plus or 50's if that? Guy is a prodigy! Reading such comments about who's better is totally ridiculous! This isn't a contest. This is jazz! People who listen to jazz and like jazz have a "respect" and understanding for music. At least I hope we all do.
It just occured to me that Blade always feel like applauding, when listening and enjoying guys like garret, metheny meldhau, redman or mc bride... he can't, cause he's got to hold the sticks... So he just gives the best response they can ever, ever get... and they play even better... and the response gets even more powerful... and I just sit here and cry tears of joy...
Nat Reeves is on the bass. This was from the album Pursuance The Music of John Coltrane. Great album Pat Metheny is just dumb nice on the guitar. Kenny Garrett is polished.
If Pat Matheny is reeaaallllyyy enjoying Kenny's solo, then there also may be something there.... I am a big fan of both, but this comment just seems thoughtless itself somehow
@TheBreckerish - I am so sick of the fact that people call Kenny Garrett Kenny G. They are just completely two very very different people. I don't generally judge people but considering their ability to play the saxophone Kenny Garrett is like god and Kenny G (whose real name is Kenny Gorelick - FYI) is a demon - a very corny one too.
This is a tune where Metheney does not come out well, too much of playing the same riffs at high speed irrespective of what anyone is playing or the nature of the tune, which demanded a slower and more considered response. He is a great player, everyone has faults, and that is his. He should be more flexible. Makes many of his tunes sound the same.
this is just great! insane solo by metheny !!
Pat & Kenny together are pure dynamite...
Great Coltrane song played by a great Alto Sax player. He's one of the best today...bar none.
love their nice and mellow rendition of "like sonny!"
Really AMAZING!!!
NO WORDS!!
Kenny and Pat Are the bests together
Two of the most respected straight ahead jazz artist out here! Pat and Kenny are awesome!
2017 and still enjoying it

CT Rail Videos Well said sir!! I don't think I could have said it better!!

🙄tell that to pat who has ALOT to say about KENNY G.

I'm sorry, but what language is your native?

! Oh, PAT ! Will Not Mess with YOU!
my favorite kenny garrett album
Metheny's rhythm playing is off the scale on this piece. Just amazing improvisational use of substitutions and harmonic sophistication.
Ignore the thumbs down sad folks.
Brian Blade's face is priceless. That stage is overflowing with talent
Pat is locking it down nice inconjunction with the other instruments. Nice collaboration. Very nice indeed :)

Pat, save some notes for the rest of us! Smokin!!!
So true!

I don't think Kenny can compare with Pat here. Metheny kills it in this set!
These guys nailed this tune..Nice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wonderful!
Loving his sound. Picked a small vintage mouthpiece last year: more focussed sound I'm happy with.
Impresionante!!!
I think Monk still had the best hats, but Kenny Garrett's in the running. He's got the advantage of being alive.
Peço mais trabalhos deste estilo . Abraço
f..king awesome
MESMERIZING )))))))))))))))))))))))))))

Why so much criticism? what is there here to criticize?
I feel grateful if that makes semse...it does for me actually 🙏
Pat Metheny nailed his solo! Holy smokes that man can play! ( ^ _ ^ )
The start of this tune is so delicious!
( ^ _ ^ ) Just yummy for us jazz types!
and Saxyman...
Creativity is as infinite as Creation...
So I theel (think and feel) we'll never run out...

Alot of criticism. Personally, this put me in the mood to shed on this song for a few.
guys guys.... I'm sure Pat knew what he was doing, if any one made a mistake, it was the sound guy. Stop being so cynical! The volume is fine!
3:55 to 4:10 good stuff.. keep posting this please.
@Passion613 hahahaha maaan you've made my day hahaha
Chalmant song
6:53 tupapa tapa csss...nice:D
After hearing Pat's solo, I'm was a little scared.
Let's just say that Sonny Simmons could paint the walls with these cats.
hahaha ya!
È show.Sax alto de ptimeira.
Is that Brian on drums?
now
So much lick.
5:23
I kind of agree... I would say he is a bit too present, and some of his licks come a bit too often... But then his solo is so great.....
Is that Brian Blade on the skins?
Brian Blade on drums. Who's the bass player?
Quienes son esos tres q bajaron el pulgar? se abran equivocado!
I wish Pat would play more outside stuff
It sounds like you haven't listened to much in the way of Pat Metheny...
@TheBreckerish lol
maybe its Rodney Whitaker, cause hes the one playing on kennys album : Persuance.
dont quote me on that thought
Its Nat Reeves
LMAO ZING!

L HingHan - But even Kenny Garrett called himself the Real Kenny G. I wish I could remember the UA-cam video he said it in.
Except when he crushes with JEFF LORBER FUSION back in the late 70's pre-Kenny G stuff!!
well he has command over whether he uses these licks... I mean listen to any of his album charlie haden and you really won't hear much of this stuff
@TheBreckerish You'd best be trolling
Taking another look ... I would just lay out all together while Garrett plays. Could be the mix though.
@BrannonMcConkey - Mate, that was funny as hell. No offense to Pat, but he should have a haircut sometime. Notwithstanding his awesome musical skills.
Pat please change your stripes tshirt sometimes...wonderful vid btw..

Metheny over played the accompaniment. but I think he learned something playing with Garett.
RUBBISH CLEAN YOUR EARS OUT
i think he just wears the hat because he's bald
