It annoys me how this movie treats Marina, who's extremely lonely and wrecked with trauma and antagonize her. It kinda gives the message of "lonely people with mental illness are psychotic and should not be interacted with because they got evil witch powers. Let's instead sympathize with the rich priviliged popular girl"
I agree with Phelous that having 0 Friends would be a tad unrealistic, depending on the situation she would probably have Family Members that would friend her, and anyone that sees her artwork whether they are goth or not would be impressed by that and Friend her to see more, particularly people online who are in the creative online art community. Very unrealistic even for a movie.
Or how about "Original Character - Do Not Steal" The central plot of this haunting tale is about a girl who copies the protagonist's identity, wearing a differently-colored shirt and a slightly altered name.
I think the real villain of this movie was Mark Zuckerburg. His website seems to be letting people possess different accounts and making people die in the most horrendous deaths while he's probably swimming in his bathtub of money and not giving a single shit in the world about what happens when people unfriend one another.
Guessing you don't read the Terms & Agreement? It's clearly stated in there that Facebook can't be held accountable in the case of internet ghost incidents.
I never understand how these things are supposed to be karmic punishment for the main characters when they didn't actually do anything wrong to begin with? At least the idiots in Unfriended pulled a mean prank, this idiot just stopped talking to a crazy person who was harassing her.
They aren't karmic punishment it's a horror movie. The girl from the Ring wasn't Batman. Leatherface wasn't defending his home from stranger and that girl was just another person that wants to kill over slight justifications
Well sure, but there's different kinds of horror movies. In this type of movie that's specifically in a school setting and about a dead classmate, it usually because the main character(s) did something, ie in bullying in Unfriended, Tamara, Carrie, ect so when the kid snaps it ends up being karmic punishment for the bullies.
I dunno, this almost comes across like Marina did this on purpose. Remember Thinner, aka "Archetypical Gypsie Curse Movie"? Now imagine a remake where the old lady does not get run over because the protagonist is an asshole, but because she _jumps in front of the car_. Same general idea, really.
That's a good point. Maybe it could also be like the "moral" choice in something like Drag Me To Hell. The protag in that /could/ have given witch granny a loan but she'd already had 3 chances, so denying her was fair but it wasn't the kindest option. It seems asinine to the audience because it was witch granny's fault for not paying but it sort of works like old fairytales where it's necessarily being cruel that'll get you in trouble, but not choosing the kindest option (even if it's reasonable and neutral at worst). I mean both movies are shit either way but yeah
A creepy Facebook film could actually work if they ditch the supernatural stuff and have it be more realistic. Have it where the villain is a creepy hacker that becomes obsessed with a girl, finds out all the information about her on the internet he can find, stalks her in real life, and becomes possessive of her. That would actually be creepy.
yes but already done even without internet, which is usually creepier since it means the guy is close enough to break in the person's house and interrogate workers
They already did this, it's called 'The Den' (funny enough, I think Unfriended was inspired by it, and Friend Request was inspired by Unfriended, meaning Friend Request was ultimately inspired by a movie with the plot you suggested. The Den is also better than both of them because the villain is a real person (not a ghost) and he actually lures the girl out of her house, or enters her house in disguise, and kills people she knows, or in general mindfucks her, all while hacking her computer to communicate with her. Also means every person she meets or knows in real life could be the killer, which makes it more paranoid.

Except somehow, somehow it utterly and hilariously fails on every level on the execution. (Plus it forgets to make the character a horrible person whose abandonment was actually deserved... this Laura is just basically a victim of what Hollywood for some stupid reason still thinks codependency looks like.)
There's an anime called Jigoku Shoujo that does it pretty well, despite only partially involving the internet. Basically there is a website where you can enter someone's name at midnight to curse them. A girl from hell will appear to form a pact with you, if you agree, she will drag that perso n to hell. The catch is that you will go to hell too when you die. It's pretty good.
Yeah, apparently Phelous and the Movies is too high brow for title puns now. Wait until Phelan finds out that those puns were literally the only reason why people were watching him and he will now end up with 0 subscribers! SP00KY!
DISMISSING ALL CLASSES FOR THE FUCKING DAY? Fucking hell, back in High school one of my neighbors (who went to the same school) committed suicide and all we got was a 2 hour period where we were allowed to go to voluntary "grief counseling".
JJJMadness I didn't go. Barely knew the guy. From what little interactions I had had with him he was a stand up enough guy he just wasn't in my circle of friends.
JJJMadness It's a thing people do. Kinda irrelevant to the point it was more along the lines of how ridiculous it is that a college would let classes out for the entire day for all students just because some student committed suicide.
Why do all these internet horror movies with female protagonists feel like they were written by 45-year-old virgin men whose only exposure to social networks was a BBS in 1992?
Someone outta touch I get...but virgin? Huh It's literally just a girl ghosting/blocking another mentally ill girl...I don't know how that's related...kinda seems like projection..
This movie's premise is flawed from the beginning; it would actually be pretty awesome to be pals with an internet witch/ghost. Just imagine it: with a simple word to your supernatural friend, you could give instant foamy diarrhea to any obnoxious troll. She could probably even make you internet famous. Sure, she might be a bit batty, but all of the most interesting people are at least a little off.
I knew that Facebook was evil and this movie proves it! Anything that inspires this many shitty horror films about people becoming ghosts because of how they are treated online can't be anything other than evil
This movie's message is weird, mostly because it kind of tells you don't friend those creepy loner people because they are actually as creepy and as dangerous as you think?
That movie is actually pretty morally reprehensible if you think about it. Marina is basically this emo/goth girl who just wants a friend, and it turns out that she is an evil witch. I wonder if any members of the emo/goth community have been treated like crap because they think they are witches, creeps, or whatever. It’s sickening. Edit: And it’s even more so for depressed people, or people that self harm! “Let’s make a movie that compares depressed people to witches! I’m sure that’ll be great.”
I just saw this piece of trash the other night. The only good thing about it was art style of the animations on Marina's website. The cops were so terribly written, not even bothering to look at the laptop, and Laura was a dummy for not showing the cops that she can't delete the video or her account after the film showed it to us over and over. In her shoes, I would have said "I can't delete it! Here watch!!! See? Now call in agents Mulder and Scully before this thing kills someone else!"
Seriously, I was one of the least popular people in my high school and even I had/have over a hundred friends. Unless you are actively rejecting everyone it is damn near impossible to have zero friends on facebook....
Yeah, I'm high-functioning Autistic, so...let's just say I was *well-known* in my school and town I grew up in, but *popular* was not something I would've gone with; I...still have most of those people on Facebook that I knew, and hundreds of others, too. Hell, Charles Manson would've probably blown *my* "friend" count out of the water!
Phriend Requesous. Looks like internet horror has taken a new low since Unfriended and it was a low genre to begin with. We are going to need tons of red tape and keep Wabuu away from the internet.
I would've written Laura's nightmare like this; Have a hornet appear on her window. Then have it slowly build up as more hornets come on her window and cover it up. Laura could act frightened and back away then once all the hornets fly away bam! Marina is there. Sure it still leads to a jumpscare but at least it's creative!
Why does this film even exist, did anyone honestly wanted to watch a movie like this at all? After all the garbage internet base horror movies such as Unfriended, Smiley and all the awful Pulse films, why would anyone even care to make films like this?
You know, when South Park did the episode "You have 0 friends", it was making fun of Facebook and the cult of people surrounding it, how stupid having more and more friends is in comparison with making friends in real life and it was actually funny. This is just... stupid
People are dying horrifically- but of course, the scariest thing is that they're losing their friend count and that's important because they're obsessed with the site, proven by using it...an average amount? Like they really wanted to go with the "technology bad" and "lonely people bad" themes but then failed to make stakes tie in with that
When Shock Exposes Become Film Premises! "These kids today, all they care about is their friend count! Why, I'll bet: if they had NO ONLINE friends, they'd rather be DEAD!"
I'm waiting for the vaporwave horror movie so I can see less people posting about that shitty music genre. The plot to it is that it's calm and nostalgic at first, but then the calming music gets twisted into intensely scary music with satanic chanting in the background and the neon nostalgic scenery starts turning into graphic and bloody scenes. Oh, and everyone, including the main character, ends up dying.
Internet horror movies and video game movies: The only genres of movies that have new entries continually produced despite a complete 0% quality rate! (Can't wait for all the responses saying "Hey, X video game movie is actually pretty good!")
I really don't understand why these movies act like they're tech-savvy and then proceed to ignore virtually everything about how technology works. Like disregarding spam, ignoring that people get hacked, and using things like Chat Roulette years after everyone's forgotten it exists. You can't take modern conveniences into account and then act like it's the fucking 90's or earlier. (They also make all the cops in these movies fucking morons.) Unfriended at least didn't pretend its main cast weren't a bunch of assholes and watching them slowly destroy each other was kind of interesting if not at least satisfying. If this movie expects us to feel bad for Marina when she acted like a fucking cyber stalker, they didn't do nearly a good enough job of making Laura 'worthy' enough of this haunting bullshit.
I think the problem is that these movies tend to be written an directed by olders guys who are apparently not very up to date or something. Or the scripts are really that old.
It's probably because these are the same fear mongering asswipes that say that violent videogames will turn your kid into an edgy 4chan school shooters when they don't know what half of those words even mean.
UltiGeek I'm actually more shocked at the correct use of hashtags than the shitty ending. I bet it had some last minute "Evil demonic face Twitter ghost screaches into camera" or some bullshit.
I once went on a date with a girl named Marina and am still friends with her today .... Does this mean she's going to reveal herself to be an overbearing Goth girl obsessed with the macabre and haunt me forever if I get scared off and unfriend her on Facebook? .... Oh, wait. Marina is just one solid name in this case; not a pretentious "Ma Rina", with the space between. I guess I'm safe.
i agree i mean there are so many other movies i would love to see his take on. such as well i mean saw which is a porbably something that has been requested from him for years!
I don't think this movie gets that it's really really easy to have thousands of friends on Facebook and no one is actually proud of how many friends they have on there
You just know someone tried to pass off the whole being stabbed thing as "It's a movie, duh. Doesn't have to be realistic. Not everyone's a medical professional, geez."
love it when movie cops are bone dead stupid... "we suspect you of uploading these videos...but were not gonna take your computer/laptop for analysis...also we can't link the uploads to you IP addresses...but we're still gonna suspect the shit out of you and blame you for all these events even though we have zero solid evidence.." Once again I feel like these movies might have had potential...hell I think a movie just about a stalker friend without the silly supernatural stuff would have been pretty good. Keep Ma Rina as an awkward social outcast, maybe even explore and give more weight to the hair pulling thing. Have her latch on to Laura, maybe because she could have been the first person outside the internet to have shown her some interest and then things start turning for the worse as Ma Rina realizes that Laura has other friends and can't monopolize her time. So as a misguided and twisted solution, she hacks Laura's facebook and starts posting disturbing videos and images to drive away her other friends, with the plan of becoming her only friend...yeah my idea is still stupid but I still think it would have been more interesting.
Hi, Phelouss, I think I just realized one more reason I get so much out of your reviews, and keep coming back. Someone with actual professional training said that lots of people find horror movies good for dealing with depression. Mine is in remission, but I still have to be careful. I never have liked being scared, but I figured out a way to experience a pretty good horror movie, the English language remake "The Grudge," with RiffTrax. And your reviews are like short subject versions, wonderful little snacks of comedy and horror. Thanks for creating so many of these, and putting so much into all of them. I can tell you're doing what you enjoy and do well, which I hope is a working recipe for success for you. :)
I loved leaving my phone under my speakers so I can hear a text or call coming in before it happened. That little "blip la blip blippty blip" was comforting.
Dang it I missed you hitting 50,000 subscribers. Well, I guess I'll say it now, I'm so happy to see you get 50,000 subs. I've been watching ever since you were still on that guy with the glasses, and I honestly preferred you over Doug anyway. Can't wait for 60,000.

If marina was more of a likable but misunderstood lonely person verses a creepy crazy stalker from the getgo this might’ve worked better. Or if she was a crazy stalker don’t treat it like the main is in the wrong or maybe have it be a stalker horror more
+Phelan Porteous Speaking of the whole "Commentary about how digital our lives are," sort of thing, it reminds me of the title sequence of Chain Letter, which you forgot to mention in your review. The title sequence acts as if it's being meaningful by having montages of various video and audio clips basically saying the exact same thing that teacher Dourif was saying.

(Plus it forgets to make the character a horrible person whose abandonment was actually deserved... this Laura is just basically a victim of what Hollywood for some stupid reason still thinks codependency looks like.)
nnnnot really, tho. instead we get another stupid jumpscare and then she's possessed or something.
Can't believe she didn't delete her account.
They should just leave the supernatural Internet horror movies to the Japanese. I've seen a few and they're quite good.
This movie could benefit from Sadako making an appearance.. lol.
Schala Magus Cue the death rattle.
That's Kayako, but yes.
Gregory House And now I feel dumb...

That must of a been awkward 2 hours for you.
JJJMadness
I didn't go. Barely knew the guy. From what little interactions I had had with him he was a stand up enough guy he just wasn't in my circle of friends.
I see, still it is sad that somebody committed suicide.
JJJMadness
It's a thing people do. Kinda irrelevant to the point it was more along the lines of how ridiculous it is that a college would let classes out for the entire day for all students just because some student committed suicide.
Agree but then again this is stupid movie that think the internet is scary and will kill you.
This was a major film release? it looks like a TLC original tv movie for October.
Or a special Lifetime movie.
+Schala Magus doesn't have enough badly acted crying tbh
souperman72 OMG souperman
TLC does their own movies? Or are you talking TNT?
It just came out in American theaters this week!
Why do all these internet horror movies with female protagonists feel like they were written by 45-year-old virgin men whose only exposure to social networks was a BBS in 1992?
The director is 40-something or so I believe.
Someone outta touch I get...but virgin? Huh
It's literally just a girl ghosting/blocking another mentally ill girl...I don't know how that's related...kinda seems like projection..
The next movie with Un in it should be called "Unwatchable".
That jump scare at 2:52 actually got me. lol
Megavidaeos ms too. (Dammit kitten)
MegavidÆos The poptarts? 😋
fuck that jumpscare XD got me too.
Agreed^^ Also they should have made a movie about this instead...
MegavidÆos I had a feeling it was coming but jumped as well.
Watching Phelous is the best start to friday evening.
oh crap that's exactly what I'm doing
*SPOOPY CONSPIRACY MUSIC PLAYS*
Is your profile picture the Snake Girl from Monster Musume?
(Also I totally agree with you)
I knew that Facebook was evil and this movie proves it! Anything that inspires this many shitty horror films about people becoming ghosts because of how they are treated online can't be anything other than evil
Just Another Guy at least there isn't a shitty movie about Google+. (I hope)
The Ultimate Sagavan To be fair, that's only because no one uses Google+
Just Another Guy I uses Google+.
I hope you had the decency to hang out with each and every one of those in RL. That's the _rules_, man.
Yeah, I'm high-functioning Autistic, so...let's just say I was *well-known* in my school and town I grew up in, but *popular* was not something I would've gone with; I...still have most of those people on Facebook that I knew, and hundreds of others, too. Hell, Charles Manson would've probably blown *my* "friend" count out of the water!
pft, why'd she jump at that cat? My cat does that all the time. That poptart tho...I peed my pants man.
Phriend Requesous. Looks like internet horror has taken a new low since Unfriended and it was a low genre to begin with. We are going to need tons of red tape and keep Wabuu away from the internet.
Most of the ghosts on the internet are so stupid...
**Moves head frame up and down**
Wabuu's Internet ghost would be a message popping up and telling you most of your activity is soooooo stupid.
I guess they took notes from the Persona 4 school of how to react to a student on campus dying.
"I've never made any cyber-mistakes! Well, except for everything I done---damn it."
- Ma Rina, 2016
It took me four years but I finally got that Twin Peaks reference
Good show
"HOW COULD THIS HAPPEN TO ME! I NEVER MADE NO CYBER MISTAKES!"I'm dead xD
WHOO! More Phelous! Lets get it.
The Ponderer And it's a Horror movie for once... then again there's only so much you can say about stupid horror movies...
Especially copycat ones.
"That's odd, usually the blood gets off at the second floor" Man perfect timing for that joke.
You know, when South Park did the episode "You have 0 friends", it was making fun of Facebook and the cult of people surrounding it, how stupid having more and more friends is in comparison with making friends in real life and it was actually funny.
This is just... stupid
You're losing friends on facebook? Who gives a crap? Isn't facebook just a way to stalk people? Just delete your account!
Least the black cop wasn't Keith David, damn nearly won at phelous Internet horror movie bingo.
he was the best thing *about* the movie.
People are dying horrifically- but of course, the scariest thing is that they're losing their friend count and that's important because they're obsessed with the site, proven by using it...an average amount? Like they really wanted to go with the "technology bad" and "lonely people bad" themes but then failed to make stakes tie in with that
that kitten jumpscare got me good.
Wonder if his next review will be Halloween 8? It's technically an Internet horror movie.
ua-cam.com/video/UkQ-mpVN1CQ/v-deo.html
Phelan Porteous Oh yeah... Thanks.

-10? Why can't she be 12 away from double digits?
BBBHuey type in Halloween resurrection phelous he did it last year I think.
When Shock Exposes Become Film Premises!
"These kids today, all they care about is their friend count! Why, I'll bet: if they had NO ONLINE friends, they'd rather be DEAD!"
Based on this trend. I can infer that there is gonna be a movie about a serial killer executing anybody who downvotes a comment on youtube.
Lol
The film is finally being released...more than 10 months after this review. Gee the film studio must have had a ton faith in this film.
It also has the Tagline "Evil is Trending" which is just the best/worst.
Dang, how many more internet ghost films are there?
Hopefully enough to entertain us in perpetuity!
Get the red tape.
I'm waiting for a movie about a haunted "Enlarge your penis!" mail.
EvilDoresh I'd watch that.
8:54
I don't care if it's haunted, I want that fucking mirror lol
Hollywood, do us all a favor, no more Facebook movies.
Internet horror movies and video game movies: The only genres of movies that have new entries continually produced despite a complete 0% quality rate!
(Can't wait for all the responses saying "Hey, X video game movie is actually pretty good!")
LivingCorpseX I was about to question your sanity until I saw the capcom part.
But they _have_ to make them because bideo james and cyberspace are the hip and kewl thing to make movies about!
I heard the Ratchet and Clank movie was okay.
The Sonic movie was really good.
(They also make all the cops in these movies fucking morons.)
Unfriended at least didn't pretend its main cast weren't a bunch of assholes and watching them slowly destroy each other was kind of interesting if not at least satisfying.
Facebook horror movies are a thing now ?
Any hopes that movie actually knows how to do hashtags? Or do we get a #HashTagKillDotCom#
UltiGeek
I'm actually more shocked at the correct use of hashtags than the shitty ending. I bet it had some last minute "Evil demonic face Twitter ghost screaches into camera" or some bullshit.
UltiGeek So they're now even starting to fail at shitty horror movie endings? This world is doomed.
Imagine if they did a MySpace movie...I mean it's scary because the site is dead. Spooky.
Yup, and they are as cheesy as their jokes.
You know that in real life, if shit like this was going down, she'd be getting MORE friends who just wanna watch the world burn.
Maybe the implication is that Marina posessed Laura.
Ma Rina is a social-media-transmitted disease. Don't catch Ma Rina.
Or your new Name might be Li Sa or Rich Ard.
Grace Kelley That still doesn't really make any sense and fails the 'no friends' punishment they were going for.
EvilDoresh That makes every other friend of mine Ma Rina'd! I should stand back, my friends are contaminated.
That on-screen friend counter fucking broke me. :D Almost passed out from laughter.
Phelous is back!!
YAAAAA
This status is wet. It's completely useless now!
sweetcinnamonpnchkin hhhhheeeeee
I once went on a date with a girl named Marina and am still friends with her today .... Does this mean she's going to reveal herself to be an overbearing Goth girl obsessed with the macabre and haunt me forever if I get scared off and unfriend her on Facebook?
.... Oh, wait. Marina is just one solid name in this case; not a pretentious "Ma Rina", with the space between. I guess I'm safe.
Man, I was starting to miss these. But you know what? These are worth the wait. You're among my favourite reviewers.
😊thats relief. Wish more people were like you
and I thought the way to clear up Cyberdemons was either 45 Rocket Launcher missiles and/or 3-4 BFG shots. the Plasma Gun also works as well.
Don't underestimate the power of a pop tart jumpscare. It made me drop a plate once.
Please review Megan Is Missing Phelous, my god it will be beautiful
Bridie Shaw check out your movie sucks, his review was pretty awesome.
Larry Iyiola Yeah he did a great review I did see that, I'd just love to see Phelous' take on it :)
Bridie Shaw I concur 👏
i agree i mean there are so many other movies i would love to see his take on. such as well i mean saw which is a porbably something that has been requested from him for years!
Eve a la Renaissance I'd love to see Phelous' reaction to the "I can't get the cap off," scene.
I feel as if Marina should just get into making UA-cam Poops. I think she’d be pretty good at it. Ok, maybe not good, but at least... “passable”?
Im gonna go write a sequel called Link'd In: This Time its Personal. You think Blumhouse would buy it?
I don't think this movie gets that it's really really easy to have thousands of friends on Facebook and no one is actually proud of how many friends they have on there
You just know someone tried to pass off the whole being stabbed thing as "It's a movie, duh. Doesn't have to be realistic. Not everyone's a medical professional, geez."
love it when movie cops are bone dead stupid... "we suspect you of uploading these videos...but were not gonna take your computer/laptop for analysis...also we can't link the uploads to you IP addresses...but we're still gonna suspect the shit out of you and blame you for all these events even though we have zero solid evidence.."
Once again I feel like these movies might have had potential...hell I think a movie just about a stalker friend without the silly supernatural stuff would have been pretty good.
Like your idea. Also, she could be killling her friends in real life in some sick twisted way to remain Laura's only "friend".
Hi, Phelouss,
I think I just realized one more reason I get so much out of your reviews, and keep coming back. :)
"Unfriend that dead bitch!"
Quote of our generation.
He'll never get 60,000 now because he unfriended an internet ghost.
He actually used to have 70,000...
enjoy him while you can before his inevitable transformation into Phe Lan...
I was sitting here wondering if facebook would have just taken down the suicide videos, but then I remember some extremely grotesque things on facebook
If marina was more of a likable but misunderstood lonely person verses a creepy crazy stalker from the getgo this might’ve worked better. Or if she was a crazy stalker don’t treat it like the main is in the wrong or maybe have it be a stalker horror more
Such a nice surprise every time there's a new Phelous horror movie review, and this one definitely didn't disappoint. Thanks, Phelous.
aww man I though when I got notified about this I thought it was an ACTUAL friend request from phelous himself =(
+Phelan Porteous Speaking of the whole "Commentary about how digital our lives are," sort of thing, it reminds me of the title sequence of Chain Letter, which you forgot to mention in your review. The title sequence acts as if it's being meaningful by having montages of various video and audio clips basically saying the exact same thing that teacher Dourif was saying.
"Unfriend that dead b****!"
Me: Wasn't that what caused this whole mess in the first place?
"How could this happen to me?? I've never made any cyber mistake. Well except for everything I've done." The fucking best.
Alright! New Phelous! My night is complete!
People who dress slightly differently from you and clearly have severe mental health problems are evil:The Movie #356
Thanks Mark Zuckerburg.
You made a website where people antagonize random people to the point where they kill themselves
Truly you have made the greatest website ever
Also, where they can annoy people with spamming and the famous phrase
"I need help with my crops on FarmVille!!!!"
I always loved the horror reviews best over the last 8 years. Congratulations on 50,000 subs.
I love the way he says 'AND HE DIIIEEES' 😃
Thanks for doing more horror. That's why I started watching your channel years ago, and what I continuously look for. The other stuff is good, but the horror is where you really shine.
Um all of his content is cool, mate
Doug is the new Marina
unknown pokemon code
unown.
These movies really are targeted towards the most vapid and narcissistic members of society. It reminds me of Wednesday Adams' ghost story: "when they woke up all of their original noses had grown back"
M. A. Packer I forgot about that scene 😄
I just came across you a few weeks from now and binge-watched basically everything. Seeing your current stuff now, I have to say you mighty improved. Keep up the good work! ^^
Wow when I was in high school, a teacher passed away from cancer ( I think it was a long time ago) we still had to go to school. What's so damn special about this girl?
PhantomDragon3 She's emo...and has 0 friends
That clip he showed was from Twin Peaks xD It was a small town and everyone loved Laura Palmer, that was what the scene was showing in Twin Peaks.
The Headmaster seems to be wildly sensitive.
YES! I was missing these, although your analysis of 80s cartoons has been pretty damn good so I guess I didn't miss these as much as I would expect.
