That's exactly the reason why really like Sony's smartphones. They put back audio jack in their phones so I can use my wired headphones, powered from my phone. I'm really glad that audio jacks on phones aren't dead.
I didn't know that, thanks for this information. I always hated that most brands removed the headphone jack. Maybe my next Smartphone will be one from Sony.
@@WeiserGold maybe a bit late here but asus phones also have headphone jacks. For example they have the zenfone 10 which is also a pretty compact phone with a 5.9 inch screen and a still decent battery life.
I misread your comment as praise for Sony's headphones, which, in my experience, have incredible battery life and audio quality, even their cheapest versions
I use bluetooth all the time. My favorite earbuds do not have a pause function so i can't just stop things. I still prefer wired tbh. The wires get in the way but they still sound better.
The thing that annoys me is the lack of choice. There are many contexts where I enjoy using wireless headphones. However, if I had to make a choice between extra waterproofing and a headphone jack, I would choose the headphone jack. Not having it makes using wired headphones worse. You can't charge the phone simultaneously and you have to fuss about with silly dongles.
I hate this problem. One thing that I think was glossed over is that the wireless earbuds are just straight up fragile. With all this talk about waterproofing, wireless earbuds can just fall on the ground or get a little wet and they will never work again, and that's 100+ dollars in the garbage. What's especially infuriating is that when I gave up and just bought a 50 dollar pair of earbuds from the local Walmart equivalent, it worked for years. Sound quality is garbage but the build is more robust, battery life is WAY longer and it doesn't break as much. Almost makes me think expensive earbuds are engineered to break quickly so the owner buys a new pair. Also, this video got me thinking, why the heck don't I just turn my wired earbuds into wireless ones? I'm on the verge of buying a 60 dollar portable bluetooth headphone amp with hours of battery life, so that I can just plug it into whatever wired earbuds I want and have it connect to my phone. All the benefits, none of the downside.
I was one of those people who stubbornly used wired earpod with my iphone. I switched to a noise cancelling bluetooth headphone a few years ago and honestly that's the best purchase I've made in the past few years. Wired earphones kept breaking for me and noise cancelling really helps reduce stress for me in public places. I am so glad I never gave apple any money for their shitty airpods tho. Cannot imagine having to live with 4-5 hour batter life.
I'll admit that ANC is pretty slick. I got a pair of over ear Bose headphones for travel that can plug into my iPod and they're fantastic. Plus, since I'm not wasting battery on bluetooth, they actually last a reasonable amount of time, and when they battery is dead, they are stuff functional headphones, which is obviously a huge perk for me. Eventually when battery gets cooked, I'll also still have a nice pair of headphones.
something so insidious i rarely see people mention or remember is how when the airpods were first released, there was so many memes about how ridiculous they were. and then i think about a year later there was a bunch of memes about how airpods were a symbol of wealth, such as insinuating people without airpods were broke. and it wouldn't surprise me if that was a covert marketing technique apple did that people took and ran with, without realising.
For some reason I would always TRASH my wired earbuds. Usually right below where it plugs in, the plastic would degrade and shred eventually exposing the wiring inside and destroying it. I probably went through 3 pairs every year. I dont think I was unusually hard on them? I also often would forget that I was attached to my phone or forget it wasn't in my pocket, jump up from my desk and walk away, only for my phone and earbuds to get yoinked away and go crashing to the floor Because of that, overall I prefer wireless earbuds for general use. However.... I'm still upset they got rid of the jack. Its really nice to have sometimes, even if its not your preference! Like, who would complain about having the ability to use both kinds of earbuds? There is no reason for it except greed Edit: and i dont even have an apple phone anymore! Ive had samsung galaxy phones since probably 2016? And yet they forced that change too
I use overear headphones, as apposed to in-ear buds, so this was the first time hearing what the battery life on airpods actually is for me. 4-5 hours is insanely short. I run my ANC on my headphones constantly when i am out of the house, and am playing music whenever i am not in class. af home, i am often listening to a video or music in the background of what i am doing. putting aside the issues with my phone time, what i am saying is i use my headphones near constantly when i am awake. I have had this pair for around 3 years now, and i still go ~5 *days* before having to charge them. Airpod customers deserve better. i am sorry that you are all being ripped off like this.
I find that my cheap (35 dollar usd) earbuds have good battery life and can maintain charge until the next morning (so at least 8 hours after removing them from the case). The issues I've found aren't the earbuds themselves (usually) but the case itself. Often the battery in the case that charges the earbuds deteriorates quickly, especially after a few drops and from just owning them for an extended period of time, and has recently started bugging out, with the case just refusing to charge the earbuds on occasion even when at near full battery, requiring a good smack or bang against my desk to get working again. Again, these are cheap earbuds, but they have good software that is pretty fun to mess with and had genuinely good audio quality. The build quality, ultimately, is what ruined them, in both hardware and the shell. My apologies for the rather long comment about my stuff, just figured I'd give my two cents on the matter.
The only point of airpods is portability. Other than that will be always inferior, batteries eventually die, for gaming the latency will always be there, and it becomes kind of an hassle to charge one more device X’D
I agree with everything in the video but one thing to add is when exercising or running the wires can be really uncomfortable so I still think wireless headphones are great for running.
@@requestnearby They are great for walking commuters too, but once the commute is over there are tons of situations where the headphone jack is useful. I don’t think wireless shouldn’t exist, there’s just zero reason wired shouldn’t co-exist with it.
With my Iphone I use wireless headphones and this video is correct about the batteries. On my iPod I still use my wired Bose in ear headphones from 2012 and they still work like new even though I left them in my pockets and they went through the washing machine 4-5 times lol.
I got the 'offical' headphone jack adapter from samsung for my phone, and i still avoid using it as much as possible because the reduction in audio quailty compared to the bluetooth connect, let alone a proper audio jack, is so annoying
what do you mean we? i've never bought any apple product, and i've only used wireless earbuds once (which i then gave away as a gift because i didn't like them)😎 (i still like the video btw)
I calculated my costs before buying my first pair. I am currently simultaneously using my 2nd (5yo) and 3rd pair (3yo) old. I was using apples regular wired headphones as the comparison as I had been using them for ages and their wires always broke in regular intervals (same happened with other brands headphones) due to the way I was using (and abusing) them all the time. The AirPods made more financial sense in that setting and also provided the convenience of not being tethered all the time.
i had haylou gt 1 pro (21.00 usd) which lasted only 3 yrs... now only plays for 30 mins :( now im back to wired earphones (7.00 usd) which gives me excellent sound and battery lasts longer on my iphone 6
My bluetooth headphones have outlived almost all of my wired headphones. Don't know why but my wired headphones just start to lose connection on one side. Also, I've found that QCY earphones work quite well and they cost 1/3 of the price of the Airpods.
Now that you mention it, I do recall having a similar left side issue with some headphones I got a few years ago, but they were like $4 at a gas station, so that was probably why for me. And to your point, there are probably lots of fantastic alternatives to the AirPods that only exist because of the AirPods, and those alternatives might be built far better for far less. That said, though, the stuff that Apple hooks most people in with, the "ecosystem", is why AirPods are still the most popular earbuds by a wide margin. That's kind of the point, it's Apple convincing most people that their solution is the best one, when it's clearly not when you think about it. Other solutions have come out to resolve the problem that Apple ultimately invented for most smartphones these days, and they are likely much better, but most people just don't think about it.
@@rejectconvenience Yeah, I mean I still think that the exclusion of 3.5mm jack was a horrible decision. And I hate that (most) other companies blindly followed. Also the fact that you cannot upgrade SSD or RAM on new Macs is really frustrating. (I get that M1/M2 processors have integrated memory so that's what makes it impossible but still)
@rejectconvenience While I'm by no means a fan of apple, I will say that they didn't invent the concept of wireless headphones. They just forced everyone to adopt them. Semi-wireless earbuds with only a wire connecting each side had been around for a bit before then, they just weren't as popular since wired alternatives were so much cheaper and worked just fine Personally, I can't do wired headphones as, despite my best efforts, I always seem to destroy the wire at the connection point, even when using them with a computer. I just move way too much, I guess. Usually I just use a set of actual headphones with bluetooth. But when I need something more portable I also have a pair of semi-wireless earbuds from a resale shop that cost me $5, still sound decent, and still hold at least 8 hours of charge after 3 years. Underpriced for sure, but new ones would still be far cheaper than airpods considering they've got an ugly boxy look and still technically have a bit of wire While wireless headphones are the best option for me, though, I'm still not a fan of apple removing the headphone port and everyone else following their lead. They did the same with laptops, taking away USB ports before phasing them out entirely on cheaper models in the interest of forcing people to spend more, be it on a pricier laptop or Bluetooth accessories
A full sound system or wired headphones (not the ones you shove in your ears) sounds much better than the risk of a battery exploding in your ears or a speaker *shoved* into your ears.
Never owned a set of airpods. Still think they look dumb. I also feel like earbuds (wired and wireless) over all have lasted less time for me than over the head headphones. The annoyance of the lack of headphone jack is also that you can’t easily connect to most AUX options without converter cables. The headphone jack can also universally quickly connect to mixers and speaker systems and whee you are trying to set up a new or temporary bluetooth connection its just over all more annoying then simply quickly plugging in via a headphone jack.
I got given AirPods in 2019 which lasted MAYBE a year. They had to be charged super often (both the AirPods and the case) and then the left one became super quiet a few months. I’m not even kidding I but I get annoyed brought these knockoff AirPods for like $30 and they’ve lasted 3 years with zero issues. Never had them die in one use, case charge lasts 2-4 weeks with daily use. Literally amazing
My 1st gen airpods died in just 4 years despite doing my best to take care of them. When I brought them to Best Buy for repairs, I was told that Apple straight up tosses them and sends back new replacements instead. Apple's c-suite must be ticked pink that people will drop hundreds on a product they think is so garbage it's not even worth repairing.
That's a fair point, it's only 2-3 years on average, so some pairs are bound to last longer, and given how many Apple has sold, it's certainly going to be a large pool.
To preface: I currently use a set of wireless over-ear headphones with my desktop PC and the built-in speakers with my phone. I don't currently use any Apple products, though I have a set of AirPods I used with my iPhone XS until the left one stopped working. I can imagine wired earbuds or headphones being better than wireless for a phone or music player you can put in your pocket (especially if you're an audiophile) because you're not restricted movement-wise. However, wired headphones sound uncomfortable to use with a computer-you'd basically need to choose between having audio or being able to step away from your computer. AirPods will work with any Bluetooth-enabled device, but are designed for use with Apple Watch, iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple TV, and can seamlessly switch between them. Wired earbuds work fine with iPhone, the iPod nano 6 proves smart watches can have headphone jacks (but I haven't used it and so can't say anything about the ergonomics, a headphone jack is proportionally huge in a smart watch, and the Apple Watch has never had any ports so you don't have a choice anyway), with iPad and MacBook you can move around but you won't have hands free, with a desktop Mac you're chained to it, and I'm not entirely sure how wired headphones would work with an Apple TV. So if you have any Apple product other than an iPhone, it absolutely makes sense to get AirPods over EarPods. In general, if you're using them for anything other than a phone or music player, you should get wireless headphones/earbuds.
I don’t know how many times I’ve been at a a group event (such as a dinner party) and the easy option for sharing music via a speaker system would have been a wired AUX connection easily achievable through a headphone jack. And not requiring figuring out how to connect to the bluetooth of a system you don’t own for a temporary situation involving your portable device. Like you are at your friends house and want to play your playlist and instead of being able to quickly plug into a jack you waste time fooling around with a bluetooth connection. I do sometimes wear headphones at my desk at work, but if I get up from my desk I am usually taking them off. In a vehicle, I usually use the car’s speaker system and a quick easy way to tap into that, headphone jack! The only situation I see wireless headphones useful (I don’t use any in-ear earbuds cause I hate them in general…all brands) is walking or exercising outside where I can’t just use a speaker (or won’t to be respectful of folks who don’t want to hear my music/audio book/podcast). At home I just use speakers at the appropriate volume as its usually better than the phones or device’s native speakers and the headphone jack allows a quick connect/disconnect in those situations.
I love wireless headphones, especially true wireless, but I would never, ever buy airpods. I bought a pair for $15 at the dollar store and they are perfectly functional at
The lifespan I describe in the video is certainly an average, some pairs are bound to be doing relatively better than useless after 3 years, but I’m sure they’re not lasting as long as when you got them out of the box.
And so I got one of the last phones on the market with a standard headphone jack when I got my latest a couple years ago. And it wasn't Apple, and it wasn't Samsung. It still works fine, as well as with bluetooth headphones. Got some for £40 2-3 years ago. Still working well! Apple is a money grab. Never owned a single item from them and probably never will.
While I agree that removing the headphone port was, in general, a bad idea, the AirPods are an increasingly convenience when wires would be difficult, such as chasing around a child. Not to mention a technical marvel. Wireless headphones pre-AirPods were always bulky and heavy (remember those shoulder things!?). AirPods meanwhile can be warn all day, every day, just like EarPods. I’d also keep in mind that after removing the headphone jack, Apple shipped lightning earbuds with phones for a generation or two. You can still buy those for the same price as 3.5mm EarPods. I personally use the $9 adapter and some $5 Sony earbuds. You’re 100% right, Apple is a profit monger. Just look at how they charge the same for a phone, but now it doesn’t come with headphones or a charging brick. I agree with most of what you said, though from a slightly different light: Apple also make some pretty awesome products.
That's true, I did miss that! I forgot about that. But they don't include any wired solution anymore, so it was probably just to get people to chill out (which worked). My issue with the adapter is you can't charge at the same time as listening to music. It's less on an issue for me now, since I ditched my smartphone a year ago, but that was a big frustration for me. I do agree, with your point about Apple making some awesome products. The M1 MacBook Air is still the best laptop anyone makes, period.
Oh no doubt. I love my Macbook, I'm still baffled with how good the M1 air is. Also the fact that they support iPod syncing still just shows that they normally care about longevity... normally
Maybe I am just lucky, but I own a pair of AirPods Pro and have never had a battery problem. I have only ever had them run out of power twice, and I have owned them for a year and a half. In general, I enjoy not having the wires in the way since they do not get in the way while working. I do use transparency mode 80% of the time, so maybe that is less battery-intensive but I do not know how that works. I also use an older model iPhone, but I do not know if that would have any effect on the earbuds. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Anyhow appreciate the video, love your content!
I think it’s very likely you have a common experience. I don’t think I gave the research in this video enough due diligence compared to the my personal data video or the one I’m working on now, but hey, that’s part of the learning process! Glad you like the content :)
First gen had quality problems. But other than that I find they last just about as long as wired ones. Just more expensive and more features. I live in mine for between 6 and 10 hours per day.
not to be an airpods shill (because my $30 soundcores with ANC sound better imo) but i bought these guys in 2019--they've gone through the wash 2 times and they're still going. what are y'all doing to yours?!
The 2-3 year battery lifespan is certainly an average, so if you don't use them all the time, or you just got lucky with the battery gods, that could explain it. But there is no doubt that a large amount of people need to replace these ever 2-3 years just because that battery isn't of any use.

Excellent video
I prefer Bluetooth for running tbh
Nice ❤️
Thanks 🤗
I have never used wireless earphones, because I find them easy to lose. I don't plan on starting any time soon lol.
I love wireless headphones, especially true wireless, but I would never, ever buy airpods. I bought a pair for $15 at the dollar store and they are perfectly functional at
i just like headphones lol
I’ve had my AirPods Pro for 3 years now no problem
While I don't agree with Apple's business practices, they sure make some great products.
Anyhow appreciate the video, love your content!
There are still phones with headphone jacks. no one buys them.
Airpods for $20 has awful sound, better to find some Sony model or Samsung perhaps
I've been using the same pair of wired earbuds since 2016, I got them for free with an IPad and they still work like new
