5:18 so real. i am a man who does crochet, something that is stereotypically a woman activity and i've been told that before by people when i say i like doing crotchet. its baffling how all these things are stereotypically for men or for women even though really it doesnt matter and anyone can do it. like its an activity, who cares, I'm enjoying it, sorry i dont want to be covered in saw dust and wood stain making a fancy chair... darn it now i want to make a fancy chair for some reason... anyway still point is if someone likes it who cares if they're male or female or whatever. ok I'm done rambling now, i hope your spleen has a wonderful day... what does that mean? idk :3
@@garbanzo6867 the funniest shit is that most activities nowadays that are stereotypically "for women" were either mainly performed by men back in the day, are being dominated by men in the industry, and worst case scenario, it's both. Like people gender certain activities as feminine, but when you look at history, men have been far more known for doing it, making gendering activities even dumber and is just a way to demotivate people from doing what they wanna do. Gender stereotypes change and evolve with time, so who gives a damn, if you think you can do it and find it fun, do it anyway. Crochet is fun and relaxing as fuck, I'm happy you're engaging in it! Keep at it fam :)
Yes! It’s also strange to me because it’s historically a craft invented by men, literally it was a thing mostly male shepherds did to keep busy, and just… it’s a good way to stim, it can be used to make things, it’s slightly more accessible for someone clumsy with anxiety than knitting because the tension required doesn’t have to stay as constant as in knitting.
I've been getting back into art lately, sharing my stuff with others, and letting any encouragement they offer me fuel further antics. Lemme tell ya, _it works wonders._ So for you, the person reading this, strive to be part of the support network for those around you that you care about. And to those receiving that encouragement, listen to your friends and family - take those kind words to heart! Really helps with the impostor syndrome if you struggle with that. Thanks for the dose of encouragement, too! Gonna work on more art when I get home from work.
my mantra for myself is kinda similar and it's "do it scared." i'm learning to not talk down to myself thinking "ah i can't do this thing" so now i try and do whatever i want despite the fear instead of immediately shutting down whatever new idea or project i have in mind we don't really need to box ourselves into a specific label to do stuff. we can do whatever we'd like to do, start experimenting with whatever projects we want, try whatever we find enjoyable or interesting. and if you're scared you'll fail or that you'll be pretty bad at it, it's okay! just do it anyway ^^
Love the attitude! I spent the latter half of my 20s slowly figuring this out. It felt like unlocking a superpower. Turns out if you are not scared of trying to do something you have never done before, you are able to do surprisingly much. And if you still are scared of it, do it scared! Fear is useless and temporary, glory is forever! Just make sure whatever you do is actually safe, and if in doubt ask for help.
i feel like its actually kinda genius to teach kids that lots of objects can have the same side dimensions, but i feel like it needs to have more examples of it where some objects have different side profiles instead of THATS RIGHT, THE SQUARE HOLE!
this is so real. biggest revelation of my life was realizing that you actually can just Do Stuff. Yeah sure in some cases there will be "consequences" but even when there are, it's just things that happen. It doesn't mean whatever you're thinking of can't be done. It's easy to subconsciously discard ideas because "you're not supposed to do that" or "it's weird" but screw that, doesn't mean it can't be done, some people giving weird looks isnt as strong a barrier as the laws of physics. Just do it.
you're so right. I always keep doubting myself whereas my fellows take on interships and projects they don't even have enough qualification for but they just reach for it and there i am, feeling like a loser. It's very hard to trust yourself or to have the audacity to make a bold claim about your goal. But nowadays i am trying to be more confident in my abilities and hope i make it in the real world.

I can work on them however much I want for however long I want. And the only person they need to satisfy is me. It doesn't matter if other people think whatever I'm doing is bad or good, because I'm doing it for myself, not them. Also nice pfp, TOH is cool
This applies greatly when studying math. I've always been someone who had a bad foundation for math which therefore makes my performance on more advance math much worse than the average. I definitely agree with how you should just do something confidently, and act like you're already an expert in that field. The more you act that way, the more you realize how you're becoming that way!
"Don't kill the part of you that's cringe; kill the part that cringes" reminds me of "the only way to stop caring about if other ppl r judging u is to stop judging them urself"
I was in engineering school many years ago and I was trying to explain to my mother what engineering was, she said, “why would you want to do that?” No support what so ever. I’m a nurse now, long story short. It was a means to a quick end. Been one for 15 years now and I’ve hated every second of it.
That's actually amazing advice. It's not just "do it" but it's also the mentality of how to go about doing it, and why you're doing it in the first place. Love it ❤
I needed this video. I've wrestled with limiting beliefs since... Forever. I am often in awe and envy of my friend who just has a hodge podge of random skills and is unafraid to try things and I learnt that in her childhood her parents encouraged her to sign up for classes every year and they always fostered a very proactive learning environment. So what you said about having a supportive network is very true. I can say my parents did encourage me, but only my strengths. The wider society did not help either. My weaknesses were mocked or made fun of and if they did want me to learn it was through shaming and bullying. So I learnt to only double down on what I was good at and avoid doing anything else that might reveal my ineptitude. Cue: - A lifetime of persistent performance anxiety - An attachment to passive learning (I'll just read this article about a skill but never DO the thing) - A reluctance to try anything new or that seemed "challenging" - Doing all that I could to avoid the hard task What funny is the same friend I mentioned envied my ability to rely on others for help (I guess I have the AUDACITY to lol) but I said well, its because I literally don't believe in my own competency lol. Learned helplessness is very easy to achieve if you assume everyone else is smarter/better/more capable than you and if you've been convinced certain things are just naturally harder (like math, science, etc) . But it's a frustrating and limiting life to live. And I just wanna have fun damnit. And not live in fear of, well, everything. Might be time to get a little sassy with myself and start having some more audacity. Pretend I have a cheeky British cat yelling in my ear 😅
I love looking things up. I love figuring things out. It drives me nuts how some people my age seem to just make no effort on their own to learn things when they say they want to learn it. So many people dont seem to want to start something unless they know everything or theyre scared of failure(or cringe as you mentioned). I have a lack of confidence in some areas, but I know that i could learn to do many things because im not afraid of failure therefore im not afraid of trying. Also i just agree with this whole video, it matches my philosophy pretty well
I wish I could become one with my cringe. It’s the only way I’m ever going to finish my silly little novels about bipedal space wolves with god powers.
You got this. I'm writing some light novels with my anthro animal OCs as well! Just remember that there is a market for EVERYONE! ^^ The hard part I think is marketing [and of course finidng beta readers]
Audacity and support - two things I was lacking when I was younger. Now I am in a better situation, have supportive people around, working on self confidence and as an adult i do basicly what I want (when I am not at work of course), but still a bit bitter of all that wasted time Im glad that I found your channel. It helps me a lot with my insecurities and inspires to do my own projects. Funny that one of the last things you mentioned is making a video game, because i have plans to do it someday ^^
"Not having to use your full potential if you want to" That's a pretty awesome quote, just because you're good at something it doesn't mean that you need to force yourself to keep up with it if its not something you enjoy.
I agree. I think it's also hard to always want to comparing yourself to others. I stopped posting my drawings online for years because not getting much feedback or likes meant I was rubbish, even though I love drawing and people liked what I was doing. Not being recognised by everyone doesn't mean you're bad, don't hold yourself back because of that, try to love yourself before others love you.
4:45 That's something I've been thinking about ever since I was young! Good to know people also think that as long as you have an objective you're inclined to do it! Even if bit by bit
This video legit made me feel a bit better. I've struggled as an artist with massive imposter syndrome and used to not care at all to the point through school I posted over 400 drawings to an Insta account. Now I have the massive fear of posting due to seeing all the skill/talent of others, especially those younger than me being better than my skill level. I'm trying to get better at not letting it stop myself. I've really stunted over myself over the years and halted my progress in art due to stopping for long periods of time because I felt so terrible about my art. But now I'm trying to finally just shove through all that and continue doing it more consistently and compare my art with my old artwork to look at improvement rather then comparing myself to others. And learning it's okay to not like every drawing, because even with the drawings I don't like... I'm still learning something new. Sorry, long word ramble but thought I might as well talk about it in case there's anyone who relates
that's the spirit! I too noticed that posting art constantly on instagram was damaging my mental health, so I stopped and mainly shared photography & videos (primarily via stories, because that was easy to do). The fear of loosing followers or rather the pressure I put on myself to only post great works was gone and I was able to hone my skills at my own pace, until I was somewhat happy with it ✨ Now I have a bunch of artworks ready and plan on publishing them 😁 But yeah there were time where I did not learn anything new at all, because idk, most educational content is so damn boring or just not for my and my style. It took me a long time until I found a very good guy on yt who teaches art I wanna make in a very easy to understand way. Aaand having no digital art tools helped me getting into traditional art 🎨
@@Haunted_Dreamer hey!! i felt the same way u were feeling but instead of artists online, i compared myself to my classmates in my art class. it made me dread to even draw and i became a major perfectionist bc i thought that my art was inadequate and amateurish compared to theirs. i’m trying to just enjoy art again and draw anything even if i end up hating it cuz i know it doesnt need to be perfect. i hope your journey goes well, i’m rooting for you!
Thank you Random Lady on the Internet, I needed to hear that today. Really forgot how powerful "Well, how hard could it be?" Is compared to "What's the point in trying?". So thanks again, and have a good day
I fully believe one of the key functions of spite is self-actualisation. When used right, it takes away so much of the planning and the min-maxing that has far too much say over my day to day - and I say this as someone with all of the executive dysfunction. "Why am I doing this? Bestie BECAUSE" needs to be on my wall or something. Also the thing about acting as if people are already interested in what you're doing also works with friendship, apparently - i.e. (respectfully) acting like the friend you want to have.
bold of the TIME GODS to make youtubers release videos on tough life situations ONLY after I've gone through them myself, rendering the videos half-useless... BOLD OF THEM!
I was going to take this video as a sign to start working on game dev again on my week off from work, but didn't know if I actually would get to it, but since you specifically called out "start making that video game you want to make" I kinda have to now, that's how that works I think.
As another person with high-functioning autism, I think something about the way you put things really helps me more than most other supportive kind of content does. Hearing "Do not kill the part of you that is cringe, kill the part of you that cringes" hit me hard.
My dad and I used the same method to rebuild my Jeep. It was hard and a long project, but with our audacity and many youtube videos, it was achievable. Thank you for making this video in supporting others to just try it, just do it. For if you never try, you will never get to do anything
5:48 I never knew I needed to hear that.. gonna hop on over to that video next. FINALLY someone says that you don't need to "fulfill your potential or it will be wasted"
In reality it won't work out. You'll get stuck in a labyrinth of a 100 taks with a 100 sub-tasks each and never get anywhere as your work slowly destroys you. Every little success will be insignificant once you realise that it was just 1% of the 1% you need to actually get done. Days, weeks, years of work will ultimately surmount to nothing as you realize the scale of what's actually expected of you. Everyone around you will cheat and skip off edges but demand you don't. And at the end you'll just be broken, burnt out and alone. So just don't bother.
The FAA told me I’m not allowed to get my pilots license due to medical issues I don’t have anymore. Been waiting almost 4 months for them to “reevaluate my case.”
when you're trying to do something new, putting out a finished product is more important than putting out a perfect product. managing to publish a decent story is a lot more successful than never finishing a perfect story
Huh, never really thought of it that way. I've always wondered why I struggle to actually put things out there despite always "doing" stuff, but I've just lacked The Audacity.
I have had a saying for awhile now, "If it can be understood by a human, it can be understood by me", which I think harbors the same spirit as the, "a man has done this before" but it feels more open. This is also why I feel like my problem is less that I don't think I can because I am incapable, but rather I don't think I can because there is never any time to.
I needed this cause i procrastinate like half of my hours and dream, im very shy when talking to people so i open my camera and record myself and i look back i remember how i was so little and scared i was now i feel happy and confident to talk to people even if i still hide 😂

On illustrating the manga I'm writing, there we loads of people telling me I should illustrate it myself.
My wife. Best friend. Family. Online friends who follow what I do. Other IRL friends. They could all see it.
*ONLY ONE PERSON* was telling me I couldn't do it; that I wasn't good enough.
And for the longest time, that was enough to stop me.
*.... IT WAS ME.*
That's the person you have to convince/shrug off/DEFEAT to get up and do the thing. And it's going to be the battle of your life.
*But it's SOOO worth it.*
this is so true, that was similar to my experience with starting my own youtube channel

I loved your comment so much I wanna be your friend hehe
yoo fellow non-female crocheter! i've always found it odd that comfy string and funny sticks are gendered, but here we are ig 😔
Yes! It’s also strange to me because it’s historically a craft invented by men, literally it was a thing mostly male shepherds did to keep busy, and just… it’s a good way to stim, it can be used to make things, it’s slightly more accessible for someone clumsy with anxiety than knitting because the tension required doesn’t have to stay as constant as in knitting.
thankyou for wishing my spleen well, I hope the same for yours, fellow nongal crocheter! ^-^

my mantra for myself is kinda similar and it's "do it scared." i'm learning to not talk down to myself thinking "ah i can't do this thing" so now i try and do whatever i want despite the fear instead of immediately shutting down whatever new idea or project i have in mind
we don't really need to box ourselves into a specific label to do stuff. we can do whatever we'd like to do, start experimenting with whatever projects we want, try whatever we find enjoyable or interesting. and if you're scared you'll fail or that you'll be pretty bad at it, it's okay! just do it anyway ^^
If you do something you know nothing about you'll fail. It's that simple.
“That’s right! The square hole.”

this is so real. biggest revelation of my life was realizing that you actually can just Do Stuff. Just do it.

Cue:
- A lifetime of persistent performance anxiety
- An attachment to passive learning (I'll just read this article about a skill but never DO the thing)
- A reluctance to try anything new or that seemed "challenging"
- Doing all that I could to avoid the hard task
What funny is the same friend I mentioned envied my ability to rely on others for help (I guess I have the AUDACITY to lol) but I said well, its because I literally don't believe in my own competency lol.

“Do not let the fear of being cringe stop you.” Seriously considering using this as my senior quote.
The fear of loosing followers or rather the pressure I put on myself to only post great works was gone and I was able to hone my skills at my own pace, until I was somewhat happy with it ✨ Now I have a bunch of artworks ready and plan on publishing them 😁
But yeah there were time where I did not learn anything new at all, because idk, most educational content is so damn boring or just not for my and my style.

"Why am I doing this? Bestie BECAUSE" needs to be on my wall or something.
Also the thing about acting as if people are already interested in what you're doing also works with friendship, apparently - i.e. (respectfully) acting like the friend you want to have.
