The Sapphire was like a whole new lease of life and model for the sierra over here in Ireland. Have no figures but they seemed to outsell the hatchback one by some margin- it was regarded as a much smarter and appealing version of the Sierra
Great video as always. I had an Xr4x4 back in 2000/2001 and it was an amazing handling vehicle. My brother had a Vauxhall Vectra 2.5 v6 at the time and the Sierra could easily out perform it yet was 10 years older. The GLS was available at the Sierras launch but wasn't marketed as a sporting type model until later on. I do like the late Mk1 Sierra models like this.
A vast range there, the GLS launched in June 86. It was a sporty GL where as the S was more sporty but with less equipment. They definitely had all bases covered fir fleets at this point.
My dad had a 1987 metallic burgundy 2.0i Ghia automatic around 1991 for a few years. He traded-in a beige 1983 base model Ford Escort 3-door. Stepping into the Ghia was like stepping into a spaceshp back then. I loved that car! At that time I was in high school and my friends were always so jealous whenever they were given a lift anywhere in it. The 'graphic warning module' in particular was always so cool back then. He later also owned a late '92 2.0i Ghia in black. This one had the headlight wipers and the sunroof was now electric, but the earlier model was definitely my favourite. Thanks for the upload!
Wow, you surely managed to wet my appetite for past Sierra's. "40:30" I was waiting for the 4x4 five door variant that appeared downunder in my native New Zealand 🇳🇿 😄 Remour has it that in South Africa 🇿🇦 a V8 Sierra existed, however that was 30 years ago 😮 and I never pursued that claim ❤ Thanks for the marathon effort 👌 in your presentation 👍🍻
No flies on you for spotting the suspicious number plate on the estate😄 I just checked my April '86 edition and there is a basically identical page for the Sierra LX, but the '86 is C825JHJ - so the crafty Ford publicity dept had 'photshopped' the plate, merely changing the 'C' to a 'D'. - thanks for posting!
Really interesting to see the Sierra range right before the 1987 facelift. I seem to have a vague recollection of the GLS but they can't have been around for long. There were so many spec changes in the first five years of the Sierra. I'm surprised they bothered with the base model at this stage, especially as it's the only one that still has the single headlight design and the hanging door mirrors.
Thank you.🙂 Earlier this year in a comment I suggested that it would be good to see one of the last brochures featuring the phase 1 Sierra. XR4x4 in red would be my choice. However, if there was a tighter budget then the 2.0 L would have sufficed. Quite like the idea of a bigger engine and a baser specced car. The 2.0i GLS was a surprise to me. I think the cheaper 2.0iS looks a bit better but I agree that having both in the range was odd.
I owned the 4x4 ghia estate exactly same spec and year and colour as the one in the thumb nail and at the start of the vid, but….. it was an ultra rare turbo technics 2.8 tt280, what a car!
I remember when these came out in the early 1980s and a friend worked at the local Ford main dealer and was using a green 1.6L demonstrator which I recall felt a massive step up over the cortina in terms of ride comfort and handling and just the whole design even on such a low model. I recall the 2.0iS but not the GLS so was definitely rare. With the facelift Sierra, I think there was a 2.9i V6 GLS 4x4 as a trim level down from the XR 4x4. Wait and see!
On the Sierra Base and L, Ford appears to have dropped the short-lived 1.3 Pinto by that point. I've also noted the disappearance of the 2.3 Cologne V6, I suppose the 2.0 EFi replaced it. The GLSi is a new one on me as well. I actually really like it, and it would be my choice, especially in that Paris Blue.
A pre facelift Sierra 2.0i GLS and 2.0iS in the same brochure is bizarre to say the least. I'd be curious to know the price and spec difference between the two. Don't forget on the facelift in the next brochure the 2.0iS was dropped. The facelift GLS was very popular and seen all over the place back in the day. I purchased a silver 1987 E reg GLS in 1991 😁
You talk about the base/poverty spec cars. I think very few sold because they were so terribly decontented. Three things….. 1. By then a fleet manager would not only be considering purchase cost, they works be factoring in resale value when they came off and the L probably retained more value that it’s higher purchase price when it came to resale 2. If you were a private buyer I bet the L was probably only a few hundred more than the base so, again, because you got the extra goodies, a majority of punters ticked the “L” trim box in the showroom. 3. Finally, marketing. The low rent model allowed the advertisers to lead with a line something like “Sierra! From only £4995!” or some such whereas, in reality most buyers spent at least 5250 on the L. Basically, the base really only existed to upsell the better trim level. Whaddyareckon?
Absolutely and also i do believe they rarely had the base model at the dealership - the salesman’s would say yea we could get you the base model but we have this L model now for only…
The pre-facelift 2.0i GLS, and earlier 2.0iS were extremely rare. Facelift 2.0i GLS versions were much more common

Yes the Sapphire was a long awaited model for sure 👍
just noticed you little kitty pass by, love the Sierra it is so special to me
Yes indeed she is cute
In Europe , they also had the 2.0 and 2.3 cologne engines . These were not offered in the Sapphire .

Yes indeed me too
I forgot they did a 4x4 ghia estate

Yes indeed great suggestion- I do get around to suggestions eventually 😂
Thank you Quarter Light I love watching you from NZ , the Sierra Ghia Station Wagon or Estate was very popular here
Thank you
I have often thought that V6 4 x4 Ghia Estate was a bit much to have in a Sierra. It is a bit like a Jaguar diesel automatic estate sport.
I owned the 4x4 ghia estate exactly same spec and year and colour as the one in the thumb nail and at the start of the vid, but….. it was an ultra rare turbo technics 2.8 tt280, what a car!
Very unusual
Massive range for the Sierra at that time. Surely at least one maybe two too many

I bought a Jan 1987 sierra 1.8 GL. Wish it had a 2 litre engine as the 1.8 was northern quick or economical
My dad had the 2.0is in rosso red. 1987
Lovely car in its day

Despite appearing quite a lavish car by that point, power-assisted steering was still only optional on the 2.0 EFi Ghia.
Heavy cars to park too without power steering if I remember correctly
That's a bit mean of Ford to say you don't get a rev counter on your GL, if you decide on the 2.3 diesel.
Too many models in the Sierra range? Hey, no! Let's add a few booted four door saloons as well just to satisfy the old Cortina fanciers.
