Playing good music should make people happy. Otherwise, what's the point? After so many years, I still look forward to sitting down behind the drum set and having a good time. Thanks for watching.
Awesome! It's hard to have fast hands and have a light touch, but you did that nicely! This whole book is awesome by the way. I'm hoping to cover this song as well on my channel very soon
I'm a beginner in jazz... I'd like to play like that. Looks so easy but it gives me headaches and cramps!!! hahaha! I should have practice rudiments and listen to a teacher at 12 when I began to play. Now it seems I'm condemned to play square rock... Young players! Practice your rudiments a lot and use the good way!!! :)
Not sure where they got the chord changes from. This is a drumless play along track that was included with the book listed in the description. Thanks for watching!
I just got that exact ride and i thought i would always love having a 2002 but im a bit disappointed by its high sensitivity, although if my playing was more articulate than i guess it would sound a lot better.
Great man! Can you explain what you did to hit that snare at 0:34? I never seen that, hitting the stick and making the snare resonate...that's cool, but i play mostly rock! Cheers!
It was basically the right stick hitting the left stick as the left stick is sitting on the snare. It is called a stick shot. Buddy Rich used this a lot in his playing. I do it once in a while just to get a different sound at certain times during a song. Thanks for watching!
1 tip. But from your drum teacher. I did that and i got amazing deals. Also check on craigslist. Theres probably loads of good cymbals for a cheaper price
As usual I was drawn into your playing. I'm trying to learn "Santeria" by Sublime. It's swung 16th notes single handed on the hi hat. I like to play thumbs up French grip for shuffles on the ride. I noticed you kind of played French grip on the Hi hat for this tune. Do you tend to play with French grip for upbeat shuffles, jazz,,,on the hi hat?..thanks!
I've played Santeria a few times with different bands. Like you said, it's a quick shuffled 16th note pattern on the hi-hat. I play it pretty much with a french grip with the right hand. Sometimes I'll switch to a German grip and use the wrist instead of the fingers. You get a stronger sound this way. Todd Sucherman explains it well. It's like cutting motion with the right hand...go to the 39 minute mark on this video: ua-cam.com/video/YU5_NJfNunQ/v-deo.html
Is this basically moeller technique? I think this girl drummer looks so relaxed. The guy is referencing moeller technique, but looks like the motion is exaggerated and he's working a lot harder. It looks like she's playing more like American grip. I feel tension playing the upbeat (around 90BPM) shuufle on the HH playing American grip. She makes it look easy though. You would tend to keep the French on the HH? I guess there should be no tension, like Todd says? ua-cam.com/video/oYONd3X4tjIh/v-deo.htmlttps://ua-cam.com/video/JfyQbeJxmVo/v-deo.html
As a fellow jazz drummer, my only complaint is you land on the 1 alot with your bass drum. Kenny Clarke did an interview once where he said how landing on the 1 just puts you there, but landing on the 4+ launches you there. Landing on the 1 typically makes your groove clunky, and can sometimes encourage rushing or dragging. Other than that, it was great!
@Poika - When you've posted ANYTHING that even comes close to Joe's level of playing, maybe then we'll cut you some slack for trying to be the smartest guy in the room.
That 2002 ride sounds great! Does it always suit jazz this well? I hear it isn’t something commonly used for jazz but I’ve been eyeing them and I’d want them to be able to do some jazzy stuff.
I've used this ride on several jazz/swing recordings. It sounds pretty good. It's a good all around cymbal. Here's another: ua-cam.com/video/RpdILQf1CnY/v-deo.html
it’s been three years since i first discovered this video and i haven’t stopped coming back since
Feels nice to see a man be so happy just playing away

That's amazing how a single charleston can be this expressive
You are not my maestro, you are my idol. As usual...astonish performance. Bravo.
Fabio, Thanks for watching. Glad you enjoy my playing. If you have a suggestion or request, please let me know.
This is quite different than I am used to playing. I really enjoyed watching your cover and learning.
Thanks. There are many ways to play along with this. Glad it helped. I did another version on Roland vdrums..ua-cam.com/video/j0xUFoEtE_A/v-deo.html

This sounds awesome! I need to get this book.
I use this book for teaching. It has a good variety of styles for any working drummer.
Always good to hear a fellow player swing . I just posted Weckl swing drum cover and it felt good.
Nice playing man.
Thanks
Great stuff!

If you have a good sense of swing, you can learn to play this stuff. It's not that difficult. A good teacher is always a good option.
nice feeling! i like this!
Thanks!
The hi hat shuffle at 0:25 reminds me of ed edd n eddy sorta
Nice take on Confirmation, Joe. -b
Paiste !
Very fluid, articulate drumming! Are the chord changes to the Charlie Parker tune, Confirmation?
Not sure where they got the chord changes from. This is a drumless play along track that was included with the book listed in the description. Thanks for watching!
excellent! thanks for the upload
nice point of viiew
Muito bom sou baterista parabéns ❤
I’m really bad at telling which genres of jazz there are because I’ve only been playing for a year, but bebop is great!
I just got that exact ride and i thought i would always love having a 2002 but im a bit disappointed by its high sensitivity, although if my playing was more articulate than i guess it would sound a lot better.

All these shiny cymbals make me want some so bad
I’m a kid and can’t save up
1 tip. But from your drum teacher. I did that and i got amazing deals. Also check on craigslist. Theres probably loads of good cymbals for a cheaper price
A pleno... Genio
These are the changes to confirmation being played by the piano and bass
What ride is that sounds perfect
Thanks. Paiste 2002 22”. All equipment is listed in the description.

I almost fell asleep on a road trip in the car, and I don’t fall asleep in the car easily
Jim sounds great! What is your ride ? Looks like a Paiste 2002 16" crash??? Sounds very cool
Thanks. I listed all of the equipment in the description. The ride is a 22" 2002. Crashes are Paiste Signatures 16" & 18".
Thanks Joe !

Great, what’s the name of the track ?
It's in the description
Sorry but i need know the name song and sorry for my bad english.
It's a track on a drum book listed in the description.
Are those Mike portnoy signature sticks ?
Yes. Probably not the best sticks for this kind of playing. But I use whatever I have at the moment..
@King Crimson! Thanks
What is the name of the song?
There is no name. It is called "Fast BeBop" swing drumless track from Jim Riley's book listed in the description.
👍
Pressure cooker?
So well played and effortless. Congrats. Just the ride sound not my cup of teat, too bright for jazz, but that’s me.
Thanks. I used sticks that were too heavy for this type of playing. The heavy plastic tip on the ride didn't produce the sound I was looking for.
Nice! Whats the song?
This drum less track is from drum book "Survival Guide for the Modern Drummer". The book is listed in the description.
@@JoeNocella yes however I know the tune but cant think of the name... or is it a generic chord pattern?
@@wertywee There's no name other than "Fast Swing/BeBop" in Jim Riley's book.
