my opinion>: the best performance to watch and listen to even as a tutorial, linear, elegant without putting accents in passages where there never were any. congratulations a pleasure to listen to you and see you play
world class level for me. Most drummers (as the drum covers exiting on youtube suggest) play to show off their skills first and foremost, but you complement the song and are not a showoff. Clearly you play extremely well, spot on!
He definitely doesn't have gene's style im sorry my dude but thats by no means a slam, its just Gene was so cool with his over exaggerated arm extensions and his flailing...he looked like a goddamn spider up there either way though great cover very upbeat version i like it
I have watched this video approximately 50 times the last 4 days. It's so respectful to the original but also feels so fresh and energetic...I am amazed!
This is the drum cover I didn't know I needed. Absolutely amazing job. You played the song the way it was intended and didn't try to showboat it up. Well done sir.
Good Job... I started learning to play by playing big band then went to small group, then country then funk then rock and now I do whatever session is needed. I actually just did a weckl Jay Oliver swing drum cover and I do miss being able to play Jazz often.
I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve come back to watch this !, I’m a big King Krupa fan !, I’m hooked!!!!! ,and to the 25 dislikes,,,, words fail !
Good job. Double stroke Tom fills are awesome. I use 4 rack toms on this number. It adds a lot of melody. You’ve good good feel that blends in well with technique. Keep playing as long as you can. I’ve been playing since ago 9 (56yrs ago). The left foot on the hi hat didn’t vary - thats key.
Thanks. I've been playing since about 8-9 yrs old also which was 52 yrs ago for me. Hi-hat is absolutely key on 2 & 4 in swing. It's a pet peeve of mine to keep that hi-hat going in everything I play - samba, rock, solo, whatever...I hate when drummers ignore the hi-hat.
@@JoeNocella I hear you. Same with me on the hi hat. Nothing really makes me say “meh” like when I see some of the metal drummers. I use a double bass - have since I started playing. But not at the expense of the hi hat. Ginger Baker is the prime example of how important the hi hat is. On the other hand, Keith Moon never or rarely used his hi hat. I thought he was a pretty sloppy player. Many disagree with me. Keep playing as long as we can!
@@JoeNocella I forgot - you might check into the Pat Travers Band doing “Sing,Sing, Sing”. They did an album called “Swing” a couple of years ago. I like their take on it.
What a great rendition, far superior to many recordings I've heard including my own,(on a now long lost LP ruined by my daughter using my records as a surface for practicing tap dancing) From the subtle left hand comping on the snare to the tension created by restraint prior to the final explosive ending. Bravo I would applaud if not for my arthritis riddled paws.
My all time favorite song. I always imagined hearing Goodman play this for the first time back then would have been akin to being at the Ed Sullivan theater in 64
Maestro you are unattainable.... every time I listen this performance i'm always gazed, I suppose (gene krupa apart ) your version of sing sing sing is within the top 5 version available on the tube. Bravo
Fabio - I wanted to play along with the original Benny Goodman / Gene Krupa version but the recording quality is not very good. I chose this version because the audio quality is very good. Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoy my playing...
Wow truly amazing. You're one hell of a gifted drummer. It's like you have four hands. I close my eyes and it was like I was back in the 40s. It made me want to put on my zoot suit and go out and dance
You could play with any band regardless of what Genre. Do you? if not, why? JUst ran accross this, what else am I missing. I hope you are making a living at this.
Thanks. Yes, I've played in various bands over the years. My first couple of bands back when I was a teen-ager were wedding bands. At 17 yrs old, I played everything from swing to disco to latin, merengue, cha-chas, tangos, rhumbas, you name it, I played it. So yes I used to play many genres of music and still do. But now it's quieted down as most musicians are not working as much. In the last few yrs, I've been subbing in some local cover bands in the Long island area. Hopefully things will improve this year. Thanks for watching.
JoNo: ABSOLUTELY your best drum cover ever... and you've done some amazing stuff! How in the hell did you synch the intro? Timing was impeccable, super clean fills, perfect accoustic kit and cymbals, great ghost notes on the snare. I think I know your secret though......... IT WAS THE PANTS! A++++++++++++++++++++++
Looking back, I should've worn jeans. I'm always wearing sweat pants around the house and when the mood strikes me, I just sit down and play. I always used to practice this tune years ago growing up. My mother really liked this tune and a few yrs before she passed away, she suggested that I post a video of this song. It's actually one of my more popular videos. I found this arrangement on youtube and used the music. The old Benny Goodman/Gene Krupa version is great but the quality of the recording is not very good. Thanks the compliments..I'm glad you enjoy my playing..
You actually pulled this off better than Krupa did man. Seriously. Heard this song enough to know the difference. You really put that old school sound in it. I actually like your version better.
Joe what a performance..I have checked out the rest and yours is the best because I can see everything your high hat and hands are doing..your foot looks like its tapping 4on the floor.obviously your sticking on the Toms can change and that's a good thing.. I did notice at the start, not sure if its the internet conection but I heard a beat before you started..only one tap..maybe that's your off start and that's cool too..like it.yeah I can fool around with lots of trips on this and can watch your high hat to keep in sync..just maybe we could see your foot pedal but that's the only thing I could find that your could improve on. your feel for this tune is very good ..btw sorry about my spacing as I write my keyboard space bar is kaputt.lol.keep up the good work and keep feeling it..cheers m8, thanks again Buddy.
Thanks for your response. I started paying the drums in Jr. High School 1963 and played in 3 different bands from 1964 to the early 1980's I stopped playing for over 30 years. In Dec. 2016 I bought a Alesis Forge drum kit and started to play again at least 5 days a week. I've been playing to Rock, Country, Latin, Big Band, Jazz, Swing, Pop, Disco, Rap and more. I will check out your drum covers. I too have published on UA-cam many drum covers. I'm not a show type drummer but I am getting better every week. When the time is right I will play professionally again. I live 20 minutes from Las Vegas. There are literally 100's of Lounges and Bars in my area with live music.
Oh Man I heard Krupa do this so many times and then I let Joe play this chart that would make Krupa come up from the Grave and shake Joes hand. Man I dig those accents and also dig the way you express your drumming. Very Cool Very Hep and Outstanding from the word go.
Joe Krupa :-) if not even better.. .thank you very much my virtual teacher ! maybe within the next 20 years I'll be able to play it almost as you... bravissimo cioa
