One of the great things about that Ludwig Supraphonic model is that it can have that boxy 📦 sound and also produce those high frequency overtones simultaneously. As a result it blends in nicely with many songs in a mix.

Here's a guy who knows how to extract every tone, tinge and tingle from a kit suited for his style. This is 24/7/365 right here. Very few drummers get that from me. Dave Weckl, Dave Dicenso, Todd Sucherman, Steve Smith, Dave Langguth, Vinnie Colaiuta and few others. Add Carter McLean to that list. Beautiful playing and gorgeous sounding kit.

It is or was the most recorded snare drum because Hal Blaine played Ludwig drums and he is "estimated to be the most recorded studio drummer in the history of the music industry, claiming over 35,000 sessions and 6,000 singles." (Wikipedia) Hal played the Supraphonic snare drum similar to the one Carter is playing here.

I read your comment and had to respond.
I totally get what you're saying (even if it is in jest). And I would guess you're not the only one, because this guy is one amazing musician. Getting discouraged, valid as that is, is a natural tendency amongst a lot of us drummers. It's an easy trap to fall into. But try to remind yourself that each one of us has something to offer. You or I or any number of us may have something we do that Carter McLean can't do, or play a certain feel that would never sound the same if he played it. It's hard not to constantly compare and to try to measure up, but it's a lot easier to find your own voice and uniqueness. Carter McLean is just one example of that. There is a point when you start to take videos like this (and a million others) and find inspiration instead of frustration. Transitioning from "I'll never be able to do that" and "What's the point?" to "I'm gonna work on that" or "I have my own version of that" is the goal ultimately. Good luck (and sorry to preach!).

Thanks for taking the time to make and share these demos with us. The 402 sounds great! I'm still on the fence about rounded edges or 45's.

What a beautiful warm punchy sound. Great drumming too.

The style of drumming that you do is obviously much different compared to Metal drumming, but I have to say, You are the best drummer on UA-cam by far. I say this because most people who come to UA-cam to watch drummers will tell you that the best drummer on the platform would be one of maybe 4 or 5 Metal drummers (Josh Steffen, 66Samus, Jared Dines, Fernando Lemus, and others). But you have something they all lack. World class Time interpretation. Impeccable groove skills. ability to stray away from the primary beat and come back to the original beat, etc.
Thank you for being such an inspiration dude! Would love to see you playing with a popular band some day!

Tune your heads low and put a pillow inside your Bassdrum. But the pillow should not be to big.
If you are still not getting the sound you want I would suggest to get a different basedrum head. For example something like the evans EMAD2 Clear.
      This worked great for me!

Sounds like a kick with no pothole in the reso. Try the Aquarian Deep Vintage 2 with felt strip as your kick and batter

Can't see the throwoff clearly, but i think that's the snare i have ( with the old keystone badge ) as my main. Love that thing ....can't believe i rescued it from a dumpster.
Looking at the end, i think your throwoff _is_ different.

Definitely Istanbul Agop (he's endorsed). But I'm 90% positive they are the Turk line hi-hats.
