    Just did this job on my 2002 SC1 last weekend. This is an excellent video! My gasket had basically disintegrated and fell out in about 50 pieces. I am worried that some small pieces probably got sucked in. In any case, idle went from 2000 to 800, and Check Engine light went out. I did cut a few corners, however. I only removed the throttle cable mount, and the hard bracket that connects the manifold to the block. I was still able to pull it away just fine, and access all the nuts. Several really need to be accessed from below the car, and unless you remove the starter, you'll be doing it by touch without a line of sight.

    This is actually extremely common in all 2000+ SOHC models due to the gasket being installed incorrectly on the manufacturing assembly line. With the thinnest part of the gasket being on the #1 cylinder, it's the first to leak. Cheap fix, and it does a work of difference for smooth idling.

    Thank you I’ve spent to much money and was just about to give up until I found your video this will be my final Attempt Can’t pass emissions test and it was a misfire code. Also coolant disappears But I don’t see a Leak could this be Problem ? If I were to do this job I would start getting all the tools that you used and parts ahead of time that way I can go step-by-step and get the job done quicker Without a headache I pray this finally takes away the check engine light and pass Emissions test while at the same time stop the strange coolant leak that I can’t seem to find

    I want to thank you for posting this video. Im currently trying to solve the same issue. The car did need a proper tune up, but that did not cure the misfire. I was curious of the codes that your car was showing. My only hesitation on blaming the intake gasket is the one i have post the infamous p0341 code first. This is before the p0301 misfire code or p0507 high idle code. Im going to share this video with my customer and see if they are interested in me trying this repair. Thanks again.

    Great video, but can I tell you about a similar problem I had with my 1995 sl1.
    it had all the same symptoms as this one had, but without the sputtering miss. it had the high idle, hard starting, terrible fuel mileage and just ran really rough. I had it to 3 different shops and they couldn't find what the problem was, then someone said it might be a bad temperature sensor, and for some reason it doesn't show up on any code scan. To make a long story short that's what it turned out to be, its a 15.00 part that takes 10 minutes to change. one mistake I made was not knowing that there are two of them, one is for the instrument gauge, the other is for the engine control computer. The bad sensor causes the computer to think the engine is cold and makes all kinds of wrong adjustments to the fuel and ignition.

    The problem with the OEM gaskets used on 99-02 sohc engines is they are too thin. The updated gasket they eventually started using, which I believe they may have used on the older sohc engines previous to the years mentioned, is a thicker gasket. I want to say the thickness is almost double of what the paper thin one is. I don't think the paper one had the orange colored reinforcement around the intake port holes either like the replacement does. If you don't live in a salt belt area, you will probably get 20 years out of this car. Taken care of, I've seen some go 300k-400k miles, that's a lot for a four cylinder engine.

    I just did this same repair on my 2002 Saturn SL2. It is running perfectly and is so quiet at idle, I had to look at the tach to be sure that it was running. The car is no longer going slowly through coolant and the gas mileage is much better. I used a Felpro gasket and it was less than $20.

    I have a 2000 Saturn SL2 5 speed with the 1.9L L4 DOHC Vin7 engine, different engine from the one in your video. Would the same problem exist on my engine? The gasket/seal is different intake manifold on my engine. The engine is running a little rough in idle, just the same in your video. I had auto store check for any codes which popped up P0404. I did a thorough clean job on the EGR valve removing all the carbon build up and it appeared the valve was stuck. Its clean and working properly now but the same rough idle exist.
    I tried the propane and it did not seem to change the rough idle. This has been going on for 3 or 4 months now. I did not want to go to all the work if the seal on intake manifold are or more reliable on this type of gasket /seal. Your thought?? Great video!

    I have the exact same car. It's at the mechanic shop. They can't figure out why it will stall after you drive it for a while. I'm guessing the exhaust manifold is clogged and the air ports in the exhaust manifold. but I would hate to spend four hundred something dollars for them to clean that out and it still stalling. I'm thinking this is my problem too,
    misfire started last week with CEL code of p0304 - cyl 4 misfire..
    I have since changed plugs, wires, and both coils and no change.
    I tested compression and it's cyl 1=180, 2=180, 2=180, 3=170
    misfire goes away once car is warmed up
    I rebuilt engine 67K miles ago at 160K miles, now I'm at 227K miles
    I have a feeling this is my issue, I will try to test...
    and that's an sc1, not an sl1, but chabuduo...

    Great video! For some reason, I know 2 guys that work at different GM dealerships and all 3 of you guys look like you could be brothers...
    BTW, that's a 3 door SC1, not an SL1 (SL = 4 doors). Probably doesn't make any difference on the procedure, though...
    I got the same car (2001) in red and the only rust I just started to see is 1 quarter size spot in the hood, 2 small lines on the back of driver side window (top and bottom) and on the bottom of the back panel of the suicide door. That last spot is the only one I'm a little worried about.

      Forgot to mention that, in my opinion, the worst move GM did was to drop the Saturn line. They still offer me over 2000$ Canadian to take my car off the road and I suspect it's because it makes all their other lines look bad in comparison.

    I have a 2001 Saturn sl1 auto. It will jump forward while I am accelerating sometimes. Don't know what triggers it. This same phenomenon can kick the car out of cruise control. Could this be a misfire? I have high idle and the problem is elusive or my mechanics are being lazy. Could it be the gasket? I have not done the test with the exhaust at all. The codes currently on my car are a confirmed p0410 and occasionally an o2 sensor code.

    Pleaee help! I have a 2002 Saturn SC2, I have a high idle. When I start the car it will idle fine, but when I drive it, the idle sticks up around 1500-2000. It will go away if I turn the car off and back on. It will come back though. I have replaced the IAC, TPS, engine coolant temperature sensor, a pcv valve, patched a crack in the valve cover that was making a vacuum leak, had a flex pipe(before the catalytic converter) replaced, It doesn't throw a code. I am completely lost. It isn't a vacuum leak, I tested the system. I cleaned the throttle body a little. I haven't taken it off completely. Any help is appreciated.

    So I’m wondering if I have a bad gasket like yours bc I have high idle and it’s revs high to 2k as I shift into park having to cut the engine soon as I go into p . My car also doesn’t want to slow down and shifts rough sometimes , for example at a stop sign I went from 20 to 0 in a distance of 50 feet and it was an awful sound , like it kept feeding the engine air while I was trying to stop so it didn’t want to downshift I’m assuming .. it’s a 2002 sl1 auto so I’m guessing that’s the case that the gasket is shot due to factory fault with the gasket manufacturing . If I fix this will it most likely stop all those problems ?

      It's about 700 or 800, when I first got it it was 1,500 would drop down when it got warm but still high, above 10,000, clean out the throttle body, replace both sensors it still idle high and I got a p0410 code, ended up removing the manifold it was clogged and ever since the idle has been fine, car runs good, idle is steady, funny it didn't give me a code when the idle was high, I just knew it was high

      Then I'd change out the idle air control

    • @michaelrodriguez2082
      @michaelrodriguez2082 7 років тому

      I did that, I also changed the throttle position sensor, what I am thinking is that the previous owner had idle issues and what he did was manually adjust the idle on the throttle body

      I'm pretty sure steady idle on these is actually 900rpm... That's what the Haynes says.

    Is there two gaskets one in the front and back? For the manifold by the o2 sensor and the pvc

    • @rustythefoxcoon5143
      @rustythefoxcoon5143 3 роки тому

      Yes there is another in the front. The intake is in the back, the exhaust is in the front!
      The gaskets are not interchangeable. Just in case anyone wanted to ask.

    An easier fix, get a Toyota!
    ASE Master tech, I've found that the best way to get the nuts & bolts right when reassembling is to keep them near the part, or near where they came from, restarting them wastes time, and they may still be in the way.
