Shoutout to Metallica for posting this. Jason will always be a part of the band.
Yeah I barely noticed I was on Metallica’s official channel. Very cool.
Except he quit the band…
@@kingnuthin44 So? Cliff died but he's still a part of the band because his influence is still there. Same with Jason. They still consider him a part of the band...otherwise this interview wouldn't exist on this channel
He will always be a part of Metallica. He’s forever etched in music history
@@kingnuthin44 nnnooo, he leeeeeeaft the focking baaand! Period! exclamation point!
No matter how much shit he got, Jason always gave 100%. The man deserves respect.
Huge respect !!! Jason Metallica great times 👌🏻👌🏻
Good simple post. He loved that band - they took him for granted it seems.
Jason excelled in every aspect. For a period of time, he was Metallica’s 2nd front man. Not sure he gets enough credit for that.✌
Calm down. He was a pretty good bassist and backup vocalist, but I wouldn't say that he excelled at either.
@@hinjurock70 i love Jason, but the history on him has been rewritten somewhat in the last 10 years. He has become this beloved figure in the bands history to the point that a substantial number of people say that Jason is their favourite metallica bass player. He was always liked but if that was stated in 1999 you'd be laughed out of any conversation. I do miss his presence on stage though and he was a very solid bass player.
@@paulmallon9292
Exactly. I've been a Metallica fan since Kill 'Em All, so I'm definitely aware of this. No one thought he was even close to as good as Cliff back in the day. Maybe by the time the Black Album was released and Metallica got a lot of new fans some of them did, but the majority of us old school metal fans sure didn't.
@@hinjurock70 You have to realize there's a difference between "favourite Metallica bass player" and "best Metallica bass player". There's no doubt that comparing Jason to Cliff and Rob he has different style to his playing, he's not as diverse as they are. However, both Rob and Cliff (less than Rob though) miss that stage presence and backing vocals that made Jason stand out so much. That's why so many people claim he's their favourite.
@@drumbeard
Are you kidding? Cliff had an awesome stage presence - he was constantly headbanging like a wildman while shredding fingerstyle on his bass. Go watch Cliff 'Em All.
As a huge Metallica fan, Jason will always have a special place in Metallica \m/
Yes, yes he will!!
In the legend and history of Metallica, yes. He’s no longer in the band though, you know, because he quit.
@@kingnuthin44 he quit because they treated him like shit.
Same.
Same !!! Anything with Rob in it, i shut it off ... it's so odd, doesn't fit in at all
I will ALWAYS miss Jason being in Metallica.
Me to I like Rob but Jason was the one I grew up with.
Rob may have been the longest bass player in metallica but I still miss Jason and wishing he is still in metallica
@@kirkcruz9721 Jason Metallica is great times !!! I just shut off their videos with Rob ... so out of place doesn't fit in at all ...
@@babagandu Well that's just bullshit. Rob is incredible. So is Jason.
@@Memu_ nah Rob SUX !!! JASON ROCKS !!!
From a woman's perspective , I was mesmerized by Newsted. His energy and his obvious commitment from day one was totally apparent. The way he could play that bass whilst banging his head and those "tough" faces, very appealing. He really fit the band well. So very disappointing when they parted ways. But, I understand why now. Forever Newsted - forever Metallica, together or separate, always a fan here!!
Best times !!! Metallica no more without him ... I turn off all their stuff without him
Jason was the hardest worker in the room. His legacy is sealed and safe.
Not really..James is frontman and writes everything
@@andrewmcgill9544 James doesn't let anyone write anything.
@Kruegernator123 not true. Kirk has written plenty of parts, even on the early stuff. The whole band is much more involved in the songwriting process now though
Thanks Metallica for including Jason in your recent promotional materials and interviews.
I love listening to Jason interviews, he's a cool clever guy and when he gets excited telling a story it's like you were right there with him. Good on him for getting in when he did, doing what he had to do while he was there, and getting out when he needed to.
Love Jason. I know Cliff is a legend. But im sure he was looking down from heavan knowing that the band was in good hands with Mr. Newsted.
Jason's transformation into Lou Reed is almost complete.
The ritual is almost done!
Jason is more metal than anyone on this planet.
Absolutely he came from Flotsam AND jetsam thrash kings .
He is metal 😂
Lol ummm ...lemmy?
Too metal for his own good
Don’t diss dime like that
He was the soul of Metallica in their concerts, always locked in and aggressive.
He was a beast and i truly miss him but let's not go that far.
@@fabricio2467 He was the best live performer on stage. James is reserved IRL and the frontman thing was never natural for him.
@@ktw70let's not act like James was a slouch on stage, he was always getting after it hard too
It's so good to see Jason on the Metallica channel! All respect to this legend 👏🏻🤘🏻
Hard not to love this guy, such a cool cat!....miss you so much Jason
Jason newsted is the reason Metallica is so popular from the late 80's to 2000
That's ridiculous...
@@nimaakhtarkhavari8766 is it ...... if I were you I would search around asking Metallica fans they would tell you the same thing
He was a driving force in their growth but the other 3 played massive parts in Metallica’s rise to the top. Metallica was at its peak with Jason on bass, and they’ve never been the same since, however they kill it with Rob now. They are incredible live at age 60
When you are loved and appreciated from everyone in the world, you are living legend.
Cliff live performance are unmatched by his bass plays, Jason was pure evil on stage and brought so much energy, Rob brought fresh air and his on stage attitude is spectacular. No one better than another just keeping Metallica alive
Even Ron Mcgovney (sp?) Is or was a good player. Dave Mustain (who did not like Ron back then) even said in an interview not too long ago that Ron was a really good player. I don't think you get that spot unless you're good, even from day one.
Why was Ron kicked out of Metallica? They should've let Jason back in that was a big mistake.
Jason was a beast on AJFA. They cheated him out of writing credits and of being able to actually hear his bass on the record. Jason was truly amazing. All of my favorite live shows had Jason playing.
Cheating him out of credits?? Which songs
Loved performance of blackened on Seattle LSBP!!
Met him in FL..great guy!🤘🎸
Props to Jason for staying true during the "hazing" or "bullying" he got specially in his early years 1986 filling in the bass role. Very stupid reason he got kicked when he tried releasing his solo material like come on he's been in the band for like 15 years of constant touring but James wont give Metallica like 1 year hiatus for Jason to focus on his side project.
Really difficult role to fill but he gave it his all especially with the great killer backup vocals he almost sounds like James at times. Wont forget Jason's iconic "DIE DIE DIE DIE" growl vocals on Creeping Death bridge.
Jason quitting was him giving that respect for himself. Metallica never gave him cause they cant move on from Cliff even after 15 years.
He quit. He wasn't kicked.
@@metalmikejr they never supported him for his request on that solo project echobrain - considering he has been a good replacement since 1986 - 2001 like thats a long time considering all the tours and shows they made all those years. i love Trujillo but Jason is a very good backup vocalist cant deny that
@@Kakashi19-69 i know that, but he still quit. It was his own decision. He was not kicked out.
@@metalmikejr How many years in Metallica would it have taken for them to respect him? Dude had a great reason for quitting. They should have relented given him the respect, let him do his side project and he would still be in the band.
@@margaritoamargo6347 it probably never would have changed. Jason leaving was a huge part of the therapy and healing. They're not normal people. They never properly grieved cliff. James never probably grieved his parents. Jason was the sacrifial lamb to turn Metallica into a real family.
Jason is awesome, glad that Metallica post this on the channel, means a lot to him and the fans !
It's painful to see our icons grow old...😔 he still looks young, but you can see how fast time travels along with a flood of memories unleashed when you look upon them. Those were the days.
Jason made Creeping Death come alive for me. Rock in forever!
Jason was the reason that i listened Metallica in the first place and his performances at seattle 89 and san diego 92 made me start my own band. I'll be always grateful for that, thx jason ❤️
What I like about Jason is he was honest and still is. Whatever ego he must have he is great at keeping a leash on it. He wasn't exaggerating when he said he was literally just like any other huge Metallica fan and he was in his dream job, he never really lost that perspective either. Even when he left he was still a fan. He comes off like I would imagine any of my friends would if they had somehow landed that job. Jason is one of the people and he was always proud of that.
Jason siempre en nuestros corazones
Met Jason at a meet and greet (he was assigned to do those as the others would do them occasionally) on the Load tour and he was as cool and down to earth as they come.
I could spend all day listening to Jason share his memories. Thank you very much sir.
This man is an inspiration for us all. He entered a corporate nightmare of egos and money and greed and all that, and showed the world that he can walk away from it despite the money and the fame.
Mad respect for Jason. What a legend
You gotta love the energy from Jason! He can charge you up by just telling stories and also blasting through live shows. Amazing
Jason, you did everything every fan expected of you and more. You are missed! I loved seeing you live on two occasions. You rocked fucking hard. No question.
Always liked Jason. Thank you for the time and love you gave us when you were a part of the band.
Metallica still strong at 40 years old, it’s amazing the impact they made along the way, but Jason had a special spotlight with his passion to metal, and I heavily respect that.
Rock on Metallica!
Yup, I just saw them headlining in the very popular Mad Cool festival, in Madrid. It's impressive how they're still on the top after all this years.
GOOOOD he's just sooooo fucking cool!!! I hope he knows how much he ment to MILLIONS of fans world wide.
One thing Jason did do ALWAYS, was give his all to the band!! And live he was the best on stage
I read somewhere once that James brought the pride to the mix, which I'm sure isn't inaccurate, but Jason, total pro. Total pro, and so proud of his work and his years spent with the Mighty MetallicA. I wish they would have worked things out with him because for a time, he was easily the "most metal" in MetallicA.
I’ve said this before but… if you aren’t old enough to have seen the “Justice” tour? You don’t know what you missed. Words can’t describe the energy. Jim Root once said in an interview “closest thing to a religious experience” and I can’t argue that logic. The absolute best and I haven’t seen anything close 33 years later.
Jason was the soul of the band on stage
He’s got such a strong and positive spirit. Jason has always inspired me to be positive and grateful. Such resilience and tenacity. He never blasts the others members of the band. He just appreciates the amazing life experience he has been offered. I love this guy. Makes me a better man to learn off of him. You are my Bob Rock Jason.
AMAZING JASON!!👏🏻👏🏻 👏🏻
ALL RESPECT !!!
🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
Jason is the Man!!
Very wise man, I miss his contribution to heavy metal music tremendously, Jason you rock 🤘🏻
They need to have him back
Never going to happen - Rob is their guy now for nearly 20 years. Rob an awesome guy and a monster on bass but his backing vocals are truely awful. Jason is also an awesome guy and a monster on bass and his backing vocals are awesome. But he will never be back in Metallica.
Jason can’t play bass like he used to unfortunately. He’s had a lot of shoulder issues. I think now he only plays bluegrass type style of guitar. Physically he isn’t the same after all that thrashing
Jason the ultimate team player. I love that guy. Don’t get me wrong, I love Rob too and truth to be told he’s a better bass player, but I miss Jason
I don't think one is better than the other, I think they are both masters of their crafts but in different styles
I love Rob, but man Jason's backing vocals went so well with James.
@@davidpearson6346 well, I'm actually a bass player. Rob's definitely a better player in terms of technique and musicianship. His lines, are more interesting than Jason's and more challenging. Jason was really solid but his style just went along the riffs, Rob makes things a little bit more interesting. In terms of musicianship it's Cliff, then Rob, then Jason. In terms of how they fit the band image wise and on stage it's Cliff then Jason then Rob.
I do not think Rob is better,
@@davidpearson6346 I don't get it, either.
Growing up in Jason's era of Metallica, my mental image of the band is always with James, Lars, Kirk and Jason in it.
When I think of Metallica he is the first person I think of! His energy can’t be matched! I love this man for all the inspiration and spirit he put out!
I love Metallica, but there will always be a part missing that will always belong to Jason. He left his soul in the band! All my respects to Jason 🤘🏻
he was the powerhouse of metallica, period.
Jason is giving me Sociology/Psychology professor zoom lecture vibes breaking down the concepts of ego and "posturing" with his OWN experience in Metallica as the case study and I absolutely love it. Awesome that he's still so beloved and respected by the band and fans that both his memories and critiques of his time with the band are fully welcome on their own channel, front and center. Fuck yeah. BASS 'EM ALL, my guy!
You’re a badass Jason! We miss ya man 🤘
Metallica no more without Jason ...
Jason was the perfect man after cliff loss. He can keep them alive in all the ways.
I miss him from 2001.
TV Que....your backdrop of Hawkwind....is awesome! They last guy on the left is "DEL DETMAR" , he was the keyboardist. In 1974 they toured through Canada and between Calgary AB and Vancouver BC is an amazing part of the world that used to be a magical secret. Del fell in love with this magical place. And decided to stay. He's been here ever since. Del is a grumpy yet entertaining old man now in his latter days. But....he was genuinely devastated when his best friend Lemmy passed away. They always stayed in contact.
Miss seeing Jason.... Great man.
Jason your an absolute Legend, love your contribution, and your time in Metallica. Your a strong person to come in after such a tragedy (RIP Cliff). You fitted so well, Cliff would have been happy with the choice. \m/ Metallica Forever
The most thrash bloke Metallica ever had \m/
i disagree. Hetfield is more thrashy than him.
Thank you Jason for all the greatest memory’s in my Metallica life!!
Jason was fantastic in Metallica. I hope he's very happy with his chophouse band. Legend!
Rob is absolutely amazing and the perfect fit , but Jason is still part of the band for me.
those backing vocals and the attitude on stage oh we miss the guy..
Cliff, Jason, and Rob all brought something to the table.
Thanks for posting this. Watching Jason and Kirk play Bass/Guitar Doodle on the Cunning Stunts tape is what inspired me to start playing bass. Life changing stuff for me.
Thank you to both Metallica and Jason for this...Jason had some of the biggest shoes in the music world ever to step in. He did his thing and I loved and still love him for that. Lucky to say I saw him live with the band several times and he was awesome!!
I'm so grateful that I got to experience Metallica w Jason in 1999 just 1½ year before he quit!
He was such a big part of their sound and stage energy/presence.
Jason is such a cool cat 😎
So many lessons to be learned from Jason. Such an inspiration.
What an awesome interview, really humble dude. You can tell he's thankful for that chapter of his life. We will always love you Jason! Thank you man
Newstead was and is a beast! Crucial member of the band.
Miss you Jason.. glad I got to see you several time on every tour you did.. Milton Keynes Bowl was a blast
Jason was just a beast on stage. I've seen these guys 4 times, Jason stole the show every time.
man, watching Jason here made my whole year.
I’m 25 years old. The first Metallica song that I can remember hearing was a live version of Creeping Death that my Uncle had showed me when I was 9 or 10 years old I can’t remember which exactly, but I know Jason was on bass cause of the backing vocals. My Uncle also showed me Duality by Slipknot and Waffle by Sevendust. I remember this much and the fact that it was all being played from his ZUNE. That was my introduction to heavy metal. A year or two later my cousin who was an avid metalhead noticed my interests and showed me “Metallica: Live Shit Binge & Purge” and it further cemented my interest. I can remember putting a lot of focus on Jason cause of his backing vocals and his running around the stage plus that weird haircut. All that being said, I don’t know if it would’ve stuck as much had Jason not been the bassist at the time. Forever grateful.
I was a teenager, full of energy, back during the Justice tour. I couldn't believe the energy Jason brought to the stage. If someone asked me, as a fan, describe the performance you want to see out of your favorite band? I would use two words..."Jason Newsted". Worth the price of admission alone. Back then you bought a ticket and got Kirk, James and Lars as a bonus to that. :)
I don't always listen to Metallica but when I do, so do my neighbors.
Such an original comment
@@nairamdiam Exactly what I thought. People should stop writing these comments.
@@nairamdiam Yes, it's really great.
man, that 2008 facebook old format meme has to die. This is on the same cringe level as stating a starwars line in real life.
Sigh lol
Real Metalhead he is! I am a fan of Tallica since 30 Years now, but without Jason it is not the same experience now.
I agree it's like there have been 3 separate iterations of the band to me. Like what you see in A Day on the Green, Moscow, and Currently, are like 3 different bands in my mind. Kinda like how Green Day is 2 different bands before and after American Idiot. At least to me anyway.
ABSOLUTELY MISS YOU JASON 👊🏼🤘🏼
Thank you for posting this Metallica. We love Jason!
The biggest loss for them is Jason.. He was the fuel for the band
Jason kept Lars in time
6:30 onwards was one of the most interesting bits from a Metallica interviews I've ever heard! Love to hear Jason's "unbiased" perspective on the glory days as "the outsider".
Jason always in our heart, always and always🫶🏼
Jason the best member of Metallica!!!!
One thing that blows my mind about Newsted besides his talent and commitment is the fact that out of all the members of Metallica, both past and present, Jason is the only one who willingly quit the band. He was never fired, he wasn't kicked out, he didn't pass away, he left. He quit the band on his own will. That's something that I think stuck into the sides of Hetfield and Ulrich; being a member of their band was a privilege. Being part of Metallica is something everyone wanted to do, and if Hetfield and Ulrich let you be part of it, you'd better be kissing their asses. But Jason wouldn't do that. He told them no, I don't want this anymore. That was probably the biggest shock that Hetfield and Ulrich ever faced in their entire career. I think it took them years to even come to terms with what Newsted did. I think Hetfields head is still spinning from that day. Last I knew, he still doesn't fully understand why Newsted quit.
That shows how much integrity Newsted has. He'll give his all if you give him a chance, but he wont be your door mat.
jason era, the best metallica❤
All became friends again before its too late. Life is good. Family indeed.
His eyes at 11:47!!! Still a kid who can't wait to play. And he is the wisest of them all.
I love Rob and I miss Jason RIP Cliff.
Bro, IT'S FUCKING JASON NEWSTED!!!!
I miss Jason :(
he's such a great bloke !!!
Jason, the Metallica Family love you so much!
It makes me incredibly happy to see Jason on Metallica's channel again. James. Lars. Kirk. Rob. And Cliff and Dave too. This sort of transparency and opening makes for happiness. After all of these years.
I was mad when Jason left but I love the guy. Stand up dude and super talented.
Memories 💜💜💜
Always loved Jason and his overall love of music
Wiser man than myself once said "Jason, you're too f*cking metal, man. Too metal for your own good." Always a pleasure seeing new stuff from our boy.
I would have preferred an interview with the whole band and jason rather than listening him separatly but still... jason is the best
I simply adore you Jason.
Jason is my favorite Metallica bassist
Jason IS Metallica!
Respect for Jason Newsted. He picked up and carried the banner of heavy metal on stage after Cliff.
Always nice to new videos of Jason. 🔥🔥🔥🔥
And Justice for Jason.
Jason's transition from heavy metal bassist to word work teacher is going nicely I see 👍
