Being a Cuban American gal, I must say these were delicious! Reminded me so much of the ones that I ate in a Miami bakery when I would visit my Cuban grandparents. I used 2 boxes of the puff pastries and cut them into squares as opposed to the circles, because it's easier to cut. I used a HEAPING tb of picadillo, I also preheated the oven to 400 and cooked for 25 minutes. Thanks for sharing!
I have made these about a dozen times. They always came out great as if I got them from a bakery in Hialeah. My compliments to the Chef. For those of you that don't know, if you want good Cuban food in the Miami Florida area the City of Hialeah is the place to go.
I love these I am Colombian but lived in Miami for many years and always loved them now live in California and thanks to your recipe I am able to make them, great video and so easy to follow. Thank you.
OMG thank you so much! I was born and raised in Miami Florida and have been living in Oregon for about 15 Years and this is what I miss most about Florida. My Cuban food. I went on vacation about a month ago and had all types of pastelito's and can't get over of how much I've missed this. Thank you for posting this, I'm gonna try my hardest to follow every single step you posted this weekend and hopefully they'll come out as good as they look on your video :)
I know this is 5 years ago, but I lived in Miami for about 16 or 17 years but I am back in Illinois now (funny thing is I work for U of Oregon!). Just had to say awesome connection. I miss Cuban food more than anything!!! I used to go to Chiqis a lot and a few places in Hialeah. Do you remember Andalusia Bakery?
I had to come back to comment Julie I made these today and they were a hit with my husband and family. Thank you sooo much !! This recipe is a keeper. 😊😊delicious!!!!
Thank you for these! I moved from Tampa to Chicago 8 years ago and there is no Cuban anything out here. It’s brutal. I’ve mastered Cappuchino Cubano and Panatela Boracha and now I’m going to take this on this weekend! Thank you ❤️
Perfect in every way. Great food, Very well presented, Recipe prints out perfectly, Easy to duplicate a beautiful product, This beautiful young chef really has it going for her, she cooks food a Cuban grandma would love. I predict you are going see her really go far in the food business.
Thanks so much for the recipe, I made these and they came out amazing. To make it easier I just used taco meat for the filling and I cut them square to make it easier and to have no wasted puff pastry. Also these are good served either hot or cold.
Omg, I always wanted to know how to make these, these were one of my favorites as a kid, thank you so much! There was a Cuban bakery I used to go in Union City, New Jersey as a kid, and they made them without the olives and raisins..Yours looks delicious I can't wait to try this!...:)
I made these for my sons 18th birthday party. I had my own picadillo recipe already prepared then I found your pastellito photo on pintrest. Your video was outstanding, explaining the process for the puff pastry and simple syrup. All the Cubans including myself were super impressed with the pastellitos! So fantastic!! Thank you, Julie!! I look forward to many more of your videos!! P.s. I will make these for every gathering from now on!! :)
lmi747 Thank You so much! I'm so glad your family enjoyed them. Maybe if I lived in Florida, I would never make these but since I don't I make these often cause good Cuban pastelitos are really hard to find.
Hey Julie, once the raisins went in, I was like.... yessssss! In our kurdish cuisine raisins are often in salty and hearty dishes. We have something called Kubba (or Kibbeh) which is basically potato and rice "dough" filled with ground meat, raisins, sautéed onions and almonds. You deep-fry them until they become golden brown. We have the same one with a bulgur/semolina dough/coat aswell... I know it sounds weird, I can't really describe it. Kurdish/middle eastern food is amazing and your video is too! :*
Once the raisins and olives went in, I was like...NO!!! I know it is common and standard to put them in but I would be happier without them. Begrudgingly, I have always had the olives in there when having picadillo in Miami, but raisins once in a blue. Still it is amazing!
This is my first time watching you and your voice is so soothing. I instantly subscribed because I can listen totally while you provide "how-to" cook and bake instructions. Look forward to more delicious recipes from you.🙏😇👏
Man those so golden. I like the look of these a lot and I've never even heard of them before. I'm going to give these a shot for sure. They really do look great Julie. :)
I only eat meat pastelitos & buy them at the store. Lately they’re being made with less meat. (Stores always trying to spend less & charge more for the same item) lol lol. But now, thanks to your recipe, I can make my own. THANK YOU!!!
I can't handle the raisins. Never put in picadillo either. Just don't like the taste. I'm down with these. Used to buy them in a Cuban bakery often. Never knew how easy it was to make. Thanks, I'm a long time in Missouri, no Cuban bakery in my world. I'm making for Christmas brunch. I know they will be going fast Thanks for the recipe and the memories. My family loves my Cuban dishes
I am from miami and now live in south Carolina. You should of seen my eyes when I seen this video. I am making them as we speak. I hope you can teach me how to make pastelillos de guava. :) btw your spicy chicken is amazing.
If I lived in Miami I wouldn't even bother making these at home, they sell them everywhere. I love Miami! I really hope you enjoy these and I will be making the guava ones really soon :)
Hi Julie, great to find your recipe for pastelitos de carne, but I'd like to know the temperature of the oven and how long I should bake them. Thank you in advance.
Cookedbyjulie do you recommend freezing before baking them for travels and baking them when we want them or you think fresh is better? also can I do the meat the day before making them?
GRACIAS GRACIAS GRACIAS!!! Finally, a recipe for pastelillos the way I remember them as a child. Every time I've attempted to find them (in Cuchifritos or Latin Bakeries) I've always gotten what I call "empanadas". I got so tired of explaining "no, they are small round and flaky" and being answered by blank stares that I pretty much gave up...then "VOILA" here you are..EXACTLY what I wanted..y tan simple la receta..wepa!! So from a Boricua sister..QUE VIVA CUBA!! Btw..my neighbor going to Cuba this week..left 40 years ago..so very happy for him and very happy for Cuba..Que Dios la bendiga. ❤
+mayailiana53 haha thanks so much for your sweet comment!! I have the same problem it's very hard to find authentic pastelitos de carne here in NJ. I love going to Miami because they sell these in almost every corner. Give this recipe a try, hopefully you'll love it :)
Hi Julie. You can find the pastelitos in Elizabeth, New Jersey. The bakery is situated at the corner of 5th st and Fulton st. It"s called Clara Bakery. There is another one in Elizabeth ave and 5th st. I believe that one is Mara Bakery. Also you have Cuba Bakery also Known as Las Palmitas in Elizabeth ave and Smith st. They all sell pastelitos de carne. I am assuming that you may find them also all over Bergen County where C Cuban community is still strong.
omgaaaah!@.@ so amazing. Can you make a video on pastelitos de guayaba y queso? I've always wanted to make these at home and I'm never too sure what cheese to use. Awesome video btw!
Guayaba y queso pastelitos are my ultimate favorite, especially when they're warm. I wish I lived in Miami, so I could have one right now :( I def want to make those but I'll make those from scratch. I would feel guilty if I just showed how to place guayaba and a piece of cheese on store bought puff pastry lol
Cookedbyjulie Nothing wrong with simple videos Julie. Maybe some people don't know it could be that simple. This same video gave me the idea of changing how I make my Puerto Rican Quesitos, I tend to roll the cheese in the puff pastry, I may try to just make some of these things but with a cream cheese mixture inside instead and see if they come out good. :)
I have lived in Miami all my life, and one of my favorite pastellitos is the pastellito de pizza. I can't seem to find a recipe for those anywhere, and some of the bakeries are so secretive, it's like they're run by the C.I.A. Any ideas?
+Cookedbyjulie They are. I mean, wow, every time I eat one, I want more. If you do find a recipe, you should do a vid on it. I'd absolutely LOVE that!! :)
+Cl Freire Yes, I remember having one of those when I was a kid. It was so good. I live in California so you can't pastries like that around where I live but, yes, good memories. I'm going to youtube or google a recipe to see how they're done.
+Cl Freire I know exactly which ones you're talking about! I've never made them before myself but I'm 90% sure the basic filling is a layer of ground-up ham, a layer of cream cheese, and then a layer of seasoned pizza-style tomato sauce. Baked between layers of pastry crust. It's pizza-ish more than actually pizza, but so delicious and nostalgic.
Hi Julie, I've been wanting to buy a Kitchenaid mixer which is better? The Kitchenaid Artisan or the Kitchenaid heavy duty? Please reply. Thank you. Love your videos by the way!
I've had the kitchen aid artisan for about 4 years now and it's wonderful. I bake very often, but I don't make large batches. It would depend on what you'll be using it for. If you want to sell cakes and etc. I would go with the heavy duty one. If you just want to bake for the family go with the artisan. This is just my personal opinion.

OMG thank you so much! I was born and raised in Miami Florida and have been living in Oregon for about 15 Years and this is what I miss most about Florida. My Cuban food. Omg my mouth salivated
Looks amazing also you have the perfect voice for this lol hope that doesnt sound weird !😝
Nice recipe - I've made them using Grands (biscuits).
they are similar to pastel de pollo, o de carne here in colombia :)
Gosh both are fantastic!
These look amazing!!!😉
Julie, what's the difference between these and Empanadas that you made previously? They look similar and both easy to make. Do they taste different?
This is made with puff pastry, the other one is made with a quick flour dough. Also, the outside of these are sweet.
And yes, they taste very different.
Cookedbyjulie thanks. Much appreciated.
Cookedbyjulie This would be called an empanada down here in Argentina. We do call anything wrapped around some dough or pastry an empanada though.
I have lived in Miami all my life, and one of my favorite pastellitos is the pastellito de pizza. I can't seem to find a recipe for those anywhere, and some of the bakeries are so secretive, it's like they're run by the C.I.A. Any ideas?
+Cl Freire lol I've never tried or even heard of those, but I will do my research cause they sound delicious :)

Omg can u please make the guayaba pastelitos pretty please with sugar on top lol ...😀😀😀

How about some Paleo recipes... Please...
Like that sweet salty combo here
Where you place them to bake?? Baking sheet??
The thumbnail made it look like you were making biscuits from Popeyes. Lol. But, in all serious this is a very tasty dish. Yummy!
