It's Sam Levinson and Abel Tesfaye making the script together. The Weeknd (Abel) fired the last director. Probably because there wasn't enough edgy softcore corn. They're sick. Kind of annoyed by Sam Levinson's writing and directing now. It's just porn.
I'm 100% convinced this is how 'The Idol' came to existence: TheWeeknd read many Tumblr and Wattpad dark y/n smut fanfictions and put on some freaky youtube playlists, then thought he could do it better. 'The Idol' really feels like a Tumblr smut made into a series.
So is his music. I honestly think this show was sabotaged on purpose because the original director that abandoned the project, left probably because she told Abel he couldn’t act.
The crew testimony is that the lady director had like no time or resource but tried her best but they got rid of her anyways because of "creative differences"
I think what's really sad about all of this is that given Abel's fondness for edgy artsy stuff, he probably thinks this show is the most genius avant garde work of fiction ever.

@@demi8890it's like Cuties: they tried to send a message but failed to execute it in a decent way, instead opting for clear fetishism and saying that mental illness is sexy
If the actor is adult, this is nothing new and you could pin this on many coming of age stories; it made you uncomfortable sure, but that's the point of creative works. To make you feel something.
The fact that the best revenge they could come up with for Jocelyn was her sleeping with her cheating ex... like everything she does in the show is so devoid of personhood, it's disturbing that someone with this perception of women could be in a position to produce a show of this scale. At least it's being called out, but seeing the show's cast & Hollywood continue to stand by a director that creates content this disgusting and abusive, is really telling.

Directors/Writers are some weird bunch man. Another tiny example imo was Batman's Killing Joke animated movie. Half the movie's segment felt like the director/writer wanting to fulfil his late night p0rn fantasy to bone Batgirl somehow. Once by Batman , and then this another weird scene where some random bad guy wanted a prostitute to wear a batgirl mask for the night. Completely pointless scenes.
Apparently this show originally had a woman director/showrunner and was actually going to be about the exploitation inherent in the music industry. She got like, 80% done with the show, HBO fired her, then brought in Sam "Let's Make Teenagers Fuck for 45 Minutes" Levinson and he basically scrapped everything and started over
@@Melanie-jy2nwYeah, instead they made an empty show that relies only on the shock of how bad it is to get any press, is basically a lite porn and is about a guy realizong his dream of feeling like a harem main character.
They wanted to write a show about a young woman being sexualized and manipulated in the industry to bring awareness but they ended up sexualizing Lily Rose in the end... Oh the irony
The waste of Lily rose depps potential in this show was the worst part. I genuinely feel bad she was a part of this and its failure when she’s the only one who actually made the show good.
I feel like she was blindsided by the original Director who was on her side leaving and felt pressured into following through with this disgusting role. Poor girl😢❤

But they mostly just ignored it and said that the Rolling Stones don't have as many followers as them which makes them irrelevant 😑
I literally do not care what they do with the rest of the show, nothing is going to excuse what it's been so far. Their claims that it's satire and tongue in cheek are absolutely laughable - it's like how people try to act like Cuties is a message about how sexualizing children is bad. You can't claim you're making a statement about how a thing is bad WHILE YOU ARE LITERALLY DOING THAT EXACT THING
those two areas of discussion aren't the same - the Idol is not anti-sexualization, it's anti-exploitation. There's a huge difference. Lily Rose Depp agreed to be sexualized by the show, therefore, she isn't a victim of exploitation. The same with her show's character - everything done in the show is consensual, between her and her label, the sexual encounters between her character and the Weeknd's character, etc. although you can probably strongly argue otherwise (for instance, she's a "broken" individual potentially prone to manipulation and peer pressure, her label and managers constantly pressuring her to release music she doesn't want to for example); the show in my opinion does well in provoking thought about consent and exploitation.
@@aDriveAway Do you also have an excuse for them firing the female director because they didn't want "too much of a female's perspective" or does that also not exist to you
Seems to me you need some new friends if they still can’t see what’s wrong with it now, and isn’t the director of Euphoria the same one for The Idol? Either way, both them shows are a waste of airtime.

the person they replaced the woman director with the original vision for the show was sam levinson, the guy who directs euphoria, where the teenage girls are exploited in similar fetish-y ways
7:55 They replaced their one (and only) female writer (the other was male) w/ 2 male writers because “they didn’t want too much female perspective”, and in the end they got a solely male perspective. Who would’ve thought.

The original director being fired on grounds of not being too much of a “female perspective” is 100% bs. She most likely actually wanted to talk about what goes on in Hollywood and someone shut it down and made softcore. Upsetting tbh
Charlie imitating The Weeknd moaning is probably the most hilarious thing I’ve heard this week

He missed the part where The Weeknd went "Haaah" during the "stretch out that tiny little p*ssy" scene. Alex Meyers pointed that out, laughing at how dumb that was, and even replayed it a couple of times at later points.
The show is the epitome how perverted whole generations have become. The hairbrush part is an effort for abusers and groomers to gaslight their victims into believing the abuse they endured is acceptable, this is coming from the top.
Yeah I live near Hollywood. It is not ‘woke’ as people claim. It is a rape/exploitation factory that tries to hide its predation under faux progressivism. All the ‘strong female characters’ are cover ups for rampant industry sexism.
Yeah, well that's what happens when everyone makes sex into their identity. From sexual orientation to fetishes, you'll see so many people nowadays who have nothing going for them except screaming at you how and who they fuck. Mix in with 3rd wave feminists saying "sex work is feminism" and you get a generation that has less healthy relationship with sex than Bill Gosby. I can't even imagine how bad it is for young kids who grow up with social media and all the OnlyFans bots...

I have a weird feeling that streaming platforms pushing the most grotesque and uncomfortable content is based on the fact that even though a large amount of people hate it, an equal amount watch it fully so they still make money from it
I have an idea for a fantasy universe where 2 elf races battle it out you have the good guy light skinned elves trying to make the elf world great again. And then there is the violent evil darker skinned elves reaking havoc.
Honestly it seems there were pieces in the show they could of been explained more of, like more about jocelyns relationship with her mom, more of a backstory of Xander, and just focus more on Jocelyn instead of The Weekends fetish obessions. So much was not talked about in the series.. it's not that great of a show but I wanna finish it and see what happens.
its the fact that even though this is supposed to be jocelyn story, its almost entirely sexual but she is the one constantly objectified and shown to be pleasurable to tedros. we never get to see what it is about this man that turns her on, but almost every inch of lily rose depps body is shown
I honestly feel bad for Lilly-Rose since she is honestly giving her all for a show that doesn't know what it wants to be. My biggest critique of the show is that it doesn't convey any information with any kind of clarity. Jocelyn finds inspiration in Tedros, but you never understand why. He is such an edgy, over-the-top character that there is no universe where anyone can take him seriously, so it's difficult to see what Jocelyn is actually getting out of the relationship. Even if you say "Well her music is better", what lesson has he taught her that has made her music better? At no point does the audience feel conflicted about their relationship. The entire time you're thinking "What does she see in him?" Like Charlie says, there are hints of a deeper meaning or at least a more interesting story, but they're completely dropped. It's the weirdest form of lamp shading. For example, in episode 4, Zander says that it's actually Jocelyn who is using Tedros. In the behind the scenes interviews, the crew kept talking about how the first scene of the show was there to show the audience how easy it is for Jocelyn to jump through emotions and that you're meant to think that you can't trust her. I was hoping that this was the moment where that would pay off, but it doesn't make any sense because all of Jocelyn's scenes with Tedros are of her submitting to whatever he wants. The only time she has had any agency was in the dressing room where she forces him to pull out. Then we have the theme of how pop idols are replaceable. You have this idea of how the record label is fed up with Jocelyn and they want to replace her with the one dancer. They even give her Jocelyn's song, because the song actually belongs to the record label. That would be an interesting theme to develop on, but do they? Nope. Instead they just use it to segue into how Tedros is the puppet master. Every time they get teed up to do something interesting, they refuse to swing. It's so weird.
Thoughts exactly! You can see where and what they were going for in a scene but they move on to something different when they felt like they achieved a point then don't carry it over leaving everything implied, More examples of this would be how they introduced Tedros. They used vampiric aesthetics for him in the first 2 episodes. The reason is simple: he's supposed to be a foreboding character that Jocelyn has a dark attraction to while she's in this rut (Weeknd awful acting aside) but. They also want him to be a joke. While playing how sinister he is kinda straight. He's not incopetent. His ego doesn't get checked til ep 4 and not even as a consequence for something we saw. Tedros is written so weirdly in genreral. How is it that the most abusive thing Tedros did on screen was pressure Jocelyn talking about her abuse (He tortured a dude but you know what I mean)? Chaimy is more emotionally abusive than Tedros. Everything else is consensual kinky shit. I'm sitting here wondering if that is a point they're trying to make by mirroring the scene of the intamacy coordinator where she wanted to show nipple with Leia being like, "she was assaulted in front of us" when it was quite clearly exhibition. Which is such a dead on arrival message. Also he's a Drug Kingpin for some reason. Jocelyn is also weird in the sense I disagree that she has a lack of agency, she's just not given much to do. She's eager to fuck Tedros. She likes being choked. They best displayed her idol responsibilities and her struggle with grief. That videoshoot had her forcing the director to retake the scene to the point of breakdown because of the pressure from others and her sense of perfection. How she handles being interviewed by the lady from Vogue. Even when Tedros starts taking over she's not fully submitting to him. She slaps him for a slight. She defends Leia consistently despite Tedros gunning for her. But all this is next to Tedros Evil and apparent naivete. It's such a weirdly constructed show. It doesn't help that most of takes place in that house. I get why people say it feels plotless or meaningless because it's just taking place in that house. It's supposed to be some type of character study but Tedros stays a mystery while with Jocelyn it isn't clear what her character is going to end up as.
Apparently in the last episode you find out that Jocelyn lied about her abuse with the hair brush, so ig that was the payoff for the “you can’t trust jocelyn” storyline? The whole show is still a mess since everything was so poorly executed
What I get so far from the show is that since Jocelyn is an abuse victim and her abuse has suddenly stopped because of the death of her mother, she struggles to cope with the fact that the abuse has stopped which is common in abuse victims, someone who has been abused their whole life learns to live that way, this is why she finds comfort in Tedros (the weekend) because he is a narcissist and willing to control her, she felt this with her mother so she feels comfortable with him, abuse victims tend to recreate abuse in the future by either finding someone to abuse them or them abusing someone else like they were abused, Tedros is clearly made out to be a horrible guy and everyone sees it besides Jocelyn and the weekends crew, this is what a manipulative narcissist does to people, in her eyes he’s helping her but we all know that’s not true, I think that’s why they didn’t want to put the show in her perspective because we as an audience need to see what she can’t, she herself has to learn what Tedros is doing is not okay but I get the feeling she’s not going to since episode 4 dropped, this show could’ve been great and interesting but it seems like they focused too much on aesthetics and sex, so stupid
That is what I've gathered pretty much also. Jocelyn also have already shown sign of her being abusive like with the step-brother. I said like already at the start that Tedros is a pimp aka one of the most highest forms of control and I have a feeling that Jocelyn does understand the downsides but I don't think we have yet seen how bad she can be and turn the tables. I think it's going into that direction ultimatelly. She just needs the controlling to not spun out. Just for the real indrusty itself and then telling a story of a broken person in it which sometimes is very much so the case irl (and in that life there absolutely there is full on hedonistic lifestyles). So I'm quite wearded out of adults being like this about the sex scenes, muchmuch more happens in real life. I have a feeling that people don't get that these kinda hollywood orgie parties etc. are like a stable thing happening all the time, verified by so many celebs. Saying there is happening things beyond they can even talk about. Also like the throwing on table of killing Tedros to Chaim, when there is put hundreds of millions behind someones marketing and all else, yes I absolutely beleave that in entertainment indrusty it's not something new or unseen. There is weard cases pointing to that direction also in real life. So it's really not even that Out There way Overdone show. Ofc it's just put into a plot-form in a differend way, by introduzing Tedros as the distruptor that you wouldn't just see in those places running the show. Labels run the show.
I'm pretty sure that no matter the perspective the audience will be able to see the piece of shit that Tedros is, because the actual victim of abuse was her, not us. So we don't be coping or abuse with Tedros, it woul d have been more interesting seeing her point of view, as we knoe Tedros is just a manipulative narcissist but we see it through the lenses of someone needing that kind of abuse. But they just wanted a quick buck making every sex scene possible and hiding behind the flag of "we are spreading awareness on abuse and victims and shit"
Yeah it's watered down and shallow AF. If they were tired of female perspectives, fine. Then make Tedros the main character and SAY SOMETHING. I'm not even mad, just disappointed.
That scene with Jocelyn filming a music video and she’s bruised and crying made me so emotional and it was so beautifully acted. Then the most horrible sex scene I’ve ever witnessed followed.
Episode One The Weekends gave off major Human Trafficking vibes. I seriously thought that's what was going to happen to Lilly's character when they went to his club.
I have an idea for a fantasy universe where 2 elf races battle it out you have the good guy light skinned elves trying to make the elf world great again. And then there is the violent evil darker skinned elves reaking havoc.
I've just started to assume that every director has a fetish they're trying to insert into their movie / show, and most are just doing it subtly enough that we can't see it.
A show that was originally going to be made showing how bad idols and actresses get abused in the industry ended up having the writers and director replaced and turned into a softcore porno that exploited the idol and actresses in it IRL, got it.
Heres my tinfoil theory. The original idea of The Idol flew too close to the sun, so the powers that be put the kabosh on it. Instead, they pushed out this softcore porn. The original idea was too real and they couldn't have that.
I mean, isn’t that what Charlie said? The original person was fired because they didn’t want to bring too much of a “””female perspective””” aka one that thinks that exploitation is bad?
the only thing I can think of is this was made as a narrative to somehow discredit all the child stars that are coming out about the exploitation and abuse they suffered. the case this reminds me of is the girl who played the best friend from iCarly (I don't remember the name) who wrote a book about her abusive mother.
Yeah they got the mom from i-carly girl. The medical wristband from Selena Gomez, 14 year old fanbase from Ariana grande. Jocelyn is based on Britney Spears they said. I guess this is the weekend shitting on all the popstars.
Oh yeah, the "I'm glad my mom died" book. I'll be honest when I first heard of that title I was shocked and a bit offended but once I hear what it was about I was like "oh yeah, I'd be happy too if I were in her shoes"
It sounds like this show does that big pet peeve of mine where they make it seem like good art can only come from trauma. Every mentally scarred artist i know wishes they could overcome their demons, lots of them have issues making their stuff because of them too. Trauma can give you a story but it can't make you a great artist or whatever, you need skill and dedication. It seems like this show was just fetish fuel anyway so I guess they just wanted to move past the story into the fun bits, I wouldnot be surprised if the sex scenes "took the most reshoots" if you know what I mean
Agreed, its similar to the utter bs of thinking drugs and alcohol make good art. Substance abuse, trauma and mental illness completely destroy productivity and creativity.
I agree. Found it annoying that the show was painting itself as revolutionary while relying on super common tropes and ideas that you hear all the time.
The original director had a very interesting vision for this show before Levinson and Abel got her booted off the project for not fanning their egos. I'd be interested in a season two if hbo gave the show back to her. But tedros needs to go. I can't take any more of his "acting" lmaooo.
Funny how the show that is originally about the exploitation of people in hollywood was turned into softcore porn after a writer refused to go along with the egos of people in hollywood.
I’ll say this, Lily Rose-Depp’s performance as Jocelyn was pretty decent, but for the love of God and all things holy, The Weeknd couldn’t even act to save his life.
It would be so amazing if the remainder of the show just took a crazy left and Tedros has like superpowers like The Purple Man. Just a complete turn. Instant classic.
@@k.c.simonsen2I think no, since they promised 6 episodes at the beginning. Later they announced that 5th is the last one, but looks like this episode was just spitted into two parts, so that makes 6 episodes in general

I have an idea for a fantasy universe where 2 elf races battle it out you have the good guy light skinned elves trying to make the elf world great again. And then there is the violent evil darker skinned elves reaking havoc.
Ironic that the original theme was the abuse of idols. Then they kicked the original visionary to erase the female perspective and all that was left was softcore fetish porn that treats the female cast as toys. The reason it’s so bad instead of a masterpiece is that nobody in charge is self-aware.
I know there is a lot of sexual abuse happening but I found it particularly personally triggering that they didnt talk about her not wanting him to come inside her before they had unprotected sex, that's absolutely terrifying to me that he might have just done that without asking and guilted her for stopping him.
I think the show was doomed to fail from the beginning. From what I read, it was basically in production hell, with writing being done during filming and then directors changed and it was totally rewritten and reshot. I think there must've been a huge amount of miscommunication with Abel as well, because, oddly, the current version of The Idol is something that I would indeed expect him to sign up for but apparently it's also nothing like the original shoot. It's basically the television version of the character that is The Weeknd's early work; but supposedly the original shooting/writing had far less focus on his character and I doubt he would've signed on unless he was in the leading role. Meanwhile, the writing and direction are so fucking weird because Lily Rose Depp's character is actually the more interesting one, despite having all the focus on Abel's character. The message was also supposed to be that it is drawing attention to the copious levels of exploitation in the idol industry, but it does this by... exploiting Lily Rose Depp? I don't know. It's definitely cringy, and wacky, but its also got people talking about it, which I guess is more important than producing an actual good show these days.
Even though I know absolutely nothing about this show, as of learning about its existence just 3 minutes ago, I can confirm that anything in this show is way better than colleens apology video.
Alex Meyers does a really good review of the show and shows a lot of clips and a great summary of how horrible and cringe everything is. His videos are hilarious!

Every time the true suffering of women in certain fields is brought up in Hollywood or similar, it gets cancelled. The first thing that comes to my head is Moral Orel's episode where it follows three female characters and their torment in the Evangelical Southern part of the US, and the second it aired the show was cancelled. First, that show was awesome anyways and demonstrated some serious topics. Second, the show dared to go where no one else still doesn't. I'm sure this will start a war in the replies if people see this. I know Women have the same rights as men in the US, and I know Women are perfectly capable of things Men do, just as Men are just as capable of things Women do. This does not stop the fact that in many places, no exceptions, women are mistreated or put in a place more than men. It's just lingering habits of social and biological history. I also know there are many exceptions to said mistreatments, in science and statistics that is called "margin of error". Sorry about the paragraphs, I just hate people who think they are smarter than they actually are. I know you know some obscure fact that makes one sex inferior to the other, Jared. You're not cool.
And the shows that present women (or even minorities) in a bad light are green lit for multiple seasons and have their creators trying to gaslight and bully the audience into thinking it’s a good show. I’m no conspiracy theorist, but if it came out one day that this was all done just to undermine those people and make them look bad for someone or something else’s benefit, I wouldn’t be surprised.
Charlie, it's totally the twilight zone. Like that first half of episode 2 is so good when she's shooting the music video, and then you get to that second half which has "The worst sex scene of all time" (Which, there's definitely an argument to be made there). Haven't watched Idol, but I have noticed what I call a "Succession Trend". Basically, instead of a story, they just have little scenes that are loosely, or not at all connected. Generally they all have the feel of someone saying, "I have a good idea for a funny one-liner" or "I have a good idea for a shock moment" or "I have a really witty/cutting remark I want to insert". Then a scene is written to make it happen but there is no rhyme or reason to it all. No story. No compelling drama. Nothing to make me care. Maybe it's just me, I do a bit of writing, so I tend to notice things like this.
Ah, the ever-frustrating experience of having cool scene/concept in your head, but then struggling to write around so it doesn't fall flat on its face in execution.
the only reason why i love this show is because it truly reflects a corrupts mans fantasy. The weeknd literally plays himself that's y to me, the role seems so natural for him. Its a show where he scapes out his dreams, but can mask it with "bringing awareness to the situation."
you people trying to hate on the weeknd will say the stupidest shit and contradict yourself constantly just to make a bullshit point. i thought it was bad acting and unnatural ? so now he looks comfortable in the role? which means it’s good acting? like pick a side. the weeknd had been unproblematic his entire career and has never been talked about in this manner but when he acts a role y’all say it is his real personality and then say some bullshit like this.
OMG! Your recap of the idol is spot on and brought me to tears! I can't stop watching it--there were times that I thought I was watching True Blood, with Tedros the Vampire in trench coat. The best part for me was when the maids were taking a break and discussing the crazy shit going on in the house. There were many times when I thought i was watching parody-the Weekend was so creepy in a cringy kind of way. With so many cast members with their roots in comedy, it could have been taken in a truly hilarious direction.

I still believe

1940s: we’ll have flying cars by the 2020s
2023: “yeah spread that tiny little 🐱for me”
its the fact that even though this is supposed to be jocelyn story, its almost entirely sexual but she is the one constantly objectified and shown to be pleasurable to tedros. we never get to see what it is about this man that turns her on, but almost every inch of lily rose depps body is shown
I haven’t seen you in years omg😭
Male gaze at its worst
Marks face and red eyes while listening too Charlie talk was one of the most immersive moments
The entire time you're thinking "What does she see in him?"
Like Charlie says, there are hints of a deeper meaning or at least a more interesting story, but they're completely dropped.
You can see where and what they were going for in a scene but they move on to something different when they felt like they achieved a point then don't carry it over leaving everything implied,
More examples of this would be how they introduced Tedros.
It's supposed to be some type of character study but Tedros stays a mystery while with Jocelyn it isn't clear what her character is going to end up as.
i really don't feel very sorry for this rich, adult woman who chose to be on the show and was paid for it. if she needs therapy she can afford it.
Dont feel too bad. Shes the kind of person who thinks her dad being who he is, has nothing to do with her model career. Shes 1,60 smt tall....

Interesting
I mean, isn’t that what Charlie said? The original person was fired because they didn’t want to bring too much of a “””female perspective””” aka one that thinks that exploitation is bad?
@@justasmltwngir1732 that sounds weird
the only thing I can think of is this was made as a narrative to somehow discredit all the child stars that are coming out about the exploitation and abuse they suffered. the case this reminds me of is the girl who played the best friend from iCarly (I don't remember the name) who wrote a book about her abusive mother.
Jennette McCurdy Author - I'm glad my mom died. 100% agree.

This reminds me of Cuties. A show that was supposed to portray a major problem with show business, but ends up contributing to it instead.
The original director had a very interesting vision for this show before Levinson and Abel got her booted off the project for not fanning their egos. I'd be interested in a season two if hbo gave the show back to her. But tedros needs to go. I can't take any more of his "acting" lmaooo.
Wasn't Abel involved right from the beginning before they changed the director to Levinson?
By any stream platform logic they would fund whatever is it that makes the show worse so yeah they won't be calling her back any time soon
Funny how the show that is originally about the exploitation of people in hollywood was turned into softcore porn after a writer refused to go along with the egos of people in hollywood.
Give it back to her AND make a public apology.
You can’t take it? Then don’t watch it? And don’t keep watching videos about it. You can’t take it but you surround yourself with it.
Them ending it after 5 episodes is warranted but the fact that it went 5 at all is hilarious to me

Is jesus and john wick put together.
I took the fact that he lives willingly in Florida as evidence to my claims.
Ironic that the original theme was the abuse of idols. Then they kicked the original visionary to erase the female perspective and all that was left was softcore fetish porn that treats the female cast as toys.
The reason it’s so bad instead of a masterpiece is that nobody in charge is self-aware.
given that this show takes place in the same universe as euphoria, its not surprising how this is being recieved
The part where she invites her ex to fuck her and Ted Rose stands outside the door crying literally sounds like something straight out of the Sims lol
Sneako moment
I know there is a lot of sexual abuse happening but I found it particularly personally triggering that they didnt talk about her not wanting him to come inside her before they had unprotected sex, that's absolutely terrifying to me that he might have just done that without asking and guilted her for stopping him.
?

It's like, they had a good show, and they scrapped it, and made a softcore p0rn0 instead ..
It's just the most fascinating and mind boggling decision ever.

Wait are u implying succession doesnt have a compelling story or the “succession trend” just happens to be a term u coined

the only reason why i love this show is because it truly reflects a corrupts mans fantasy. The weeknd literally plays himself that's y to me, the role seems so natural for him. Its a show where he scapes out his dreams, but can mask it with "bringing awareness to the situation."
