- Coach Gary Hall Sr explains how to do a proper single arm backstroke drill. Two important aspects of this drill are shoulder rotation and a strong pull. #fast #swimming #backstroke #shorts

Fooken awesome, I have been getting sore from the shoulders after a mile or so, and by applying your technique I avoid that annoying itch. Cheers!
Great to hear... this should definitely help you use more of the bigger/stronger muscles!
Thank you so much for this tip - will practice this
You're so welcome!
The best
Thanks for watching Azman!
Crear explanación thank greetings frm México
You are welcome!
I am getting myself back to swimming. For the backstroke if feels like stretching exercises help to improve shoulder rotation. One thing I am questioning, whould not it be more natural for the stroke move to pull hand out of the water with pinky finger first? You do not have to rotate hand then while going through the air and it helps to pop shoulder up before pulling hand out of the water. Appreciate your thoughts on this.
Thumb first is ideal for a few reasons that come to mind. 1. It means we "finished" the pressing phase by flexing the wrist back to neutral after it (the wrist) being in extension. That means we get a little extra propulsion out of the hand that would be miss if you didn't finish the press thumb up. 2. Unless you start rotating your hand during the end of the pressing phase, the time it would take to get the pinky up after the press would limit your ability to increase stroke rate (the most important piece of being a fast backstroker). 3. The recovery phase is the perfect time to change the hands position because it's the only opportunity to do it without risking an increase in drag or a decrease in propulsion as it travels through air instead of water.

For pre senior kids which is a better recommendation for free. Straight arm swimming like wind mill with very little hip rotation or high elbow early vertical arm during the pull cycle with rotation. Distance is 50 to 100 yes. Or meters?
We like high-octane (straight arm) recovery for the 50 free sprint and medium to med-high octane level (like Dressel) for the 100. Shoulder driven for both, unless the swimmer has a monster kick like Phelps or Lezak, where a hybrid free will work.
Be good to see some backstroke catch /pull videos as it's something a lot of our kids struggle with on the stroke.
Clear discription excellent. Is same for sea swimming 750 m weak swimmer please?
It'll work regardless of pool, lake or sea!
Interesting my coach is teaching me differently to that. I have good arm flexibility and so does she. Maybe that’s why the difference.
Could be
Your coach is probably worng😂.
cant really see the arm as you pull... isn't the arm much straighter during the pull?
you want to bend the elbow as early as possible to get the palm in a position to press straight back!
@@theraceclub to what degree? certainly not 90
@@jeff-ji3kh it depends at which moment through the pull. But we like the hand to stay somewhat close to the body through the pull so at moments, its actually less than 90 (think around when the hand passes the head).
@@theraceclub in this demo from your channel 11 months ago, the athlete demonstrates bent arm pull as 100 degrees.
have you revised lower?

@@jeff-ji3kh apologies Jeff, you are correct - we can see less than 90 but that 110 ish range is where we'd like to be for most. At the end of the day the most important thing is maximizing propulsion in the right direction (aka pressing the palm straight back) ~Sincerely the new guy
