20000 steps a day for a month

  • New year wasn’t quite the fresh start I was hoping for…
January 2021 conspired to be the perfect storm of difficult situations as I dealt with lockdown, home-schooling, work project cancellations and a heartbreaking loss that affected me deeply. This video documents my difficult month and how I was able to come out of it by moving. By literally putting one foot in front of another.
I was invited to be part of a steps challenge for the month. Little did I know just how much of a life-saver this was going to be.
The challenge came from my awesome personal trainer, Murray Macpherson, and there were four parts to it:
    1) Walk a minimum of 300,000 steps
    2) Take on a personal challenge
    3) No processed foods
    4) No alcohol
The thinking behind it is that people who incorporate good healthy habits in January tend to do much better for the rest of the year.
Never one to turn down a challenge, I launched myself head first into this. But everything came crashing down in the middle of the month and I felt completely bereft.
But pushing forward with the steps challenge was the only thing I could do. It turned everything around.
Within a couple of weeks, I was walking a ludicrous amount of steps every day. My two boys told me they wanted me to win the steps challenge, so how much more motivation did I need?
I fully appreciate that my situation in January was similar to many others (especially parents of your children) and there are people who are going through far tougher times than me. But January hit me hard. I’m just very grateful that I found a way out of it.

Wow! I did 20,000 steps outside today and I was like: can I do it at home? This is mind-blowing! Thanks for sharing.

Thank you very much! Obviously it helps if you have a large room which you can walk round in a circle. My kitchen - which has an island - was perfect for this, bit you do get dizzy going round in a circle for a long time 😂. I wish you the very best of luck with it.

Well done! Sorry to hear about Billy. Losing a pet is rough, especially when everything else is so difficult. As you know I lost my black cat recently too, so this got me.

Hi Richard, I'm so sorry to hear you lost your lovely cat. We've lost many dogs over the years and it really hits you hard. It's just awful at the time. but time really is a healer and eventually you're left with wonderful memories and the pain goes away. Although the walking challenge was very physical, it's all about the mind really and setting yourself goals & challenges like this are so helpful. Well done on an amazing effort. It's been a tough old time of late, but I'm very optimistic we'll be out with our cameras soon, enjoying life again. A beautifully shot and narrated film, I really enjoyed it. Warmest best wishes, David ps I've had a look as some of your professional work and it really is amazing. We've just got to hang in there for a few more months and you'll be wowing them again soon with all your talents :-)

Thank you so much for taking the time to comment David. It's really appreciated. Yes, January was pretty rough, but as you say time is a great healer. Thank you also for you kind comments! I hope that we can both be back doing what we love in the near future. Very best wishes to you too.

Hello sir, wonderful video, really sorry about your cat Billy, I too lost my dad to covid recently, it has been really difficult but I also decided to move, literally, pick myself up along the way, last month I completed 745,000+, out of coincidence I came across your video, was searching for people who walked a lot, just wanted to leave a comment, hope you're doing well.

Thank you so much for your comment! I'm really sorry to hear the news about your Dad. As you say, it has been a very difficult year and I'm pleased that you were able to cope with this difficult time by doing lots of walking. 745,000 steps is a lot! It really does seem to have a transformative effect. Thanks again and very best wishes to you.

I feel your pain so much! We had to let go one of our cats about 3 months ago. It still hurts badly. We also have fiv+ cats. They are often overlooked at the shelter, unfortunately. But our two are just the sweetest cuddle bugs (fate interveened and we got to adopt another fiv+ really soon after we had to let Felix go)...

Thank you very much! The step challenge was organised through the Garmin app and we all used Garmin devices to track our step count. However you can use a variety of different step counters - fit bit Apple Watch etc - to track your step count. Best of luck!
