I have rewatched this video so many times but somehow have only just picked up on the fact that despite having spent several minutes railing against the misinformed liberal mindset of trying to save the world simply by altering your consumption habits, he puts the stock cubes back anyway. Having fully acknowledged his lack of personal blame for the state of things, he still makes one small gesture - to act in whatever small way he can even if at the end of the day it only serves to preserve his sanity. The world is fucked, and its easy to feel powerless in the face of everything and yet he still chooses sincerity and blind optimism over cynicism and irony in the end. Small nuances like this make this beautiful video worth coming back to time and time again.
Agreed. That energy is vital, though I'm reticent to act on it because of how angry it is. I hope for a caring energy to balance it, to center it. Changing the world is as much about creation of good as it is destruction of bad.
Really? I come away from this with a "we're all fucked and there's nothing we can individually do about it, but also, none of this really matters to the infinitely uncaring universe" kinda vibe. 😑 Not complaining tho.
I switched my sandwich spread to one with "certifiably sustainable palm oil". Who the fuck knows what that means. I hope it means something good. Because even though it's painfully, unequivocally obvious that my choice has about as much impact as one atom on a galaxy, it still means something to me.
I love the way the lyrics are mostly just spoken as opposed to having a rhythm but they hit the beat at the right moments to connect the music to the lyrics. It’s not a style enough artists do in my opinion. It adds a level of frustration and genuineness there wouldn’t otherwise be.
The Narcissist Cookbook: Valve Time, done right. Just as exhilarating as your last video. The Panama Papers *should* have been the turning point in History, but nope, swept under the carpet with a blood-stained brush.
Yeah everybody just went to Swiss banks after that. Personally wouldn’t have trusted Panamanian anyway, I’m convinced it was a honey pot to seize what should have been taxable income, personally still not paying taxes though.
I love watching music videos for the the narcissist cookbook songs because basically 100% of the time it gives me a deeper understanding of the meaning of the song and i love it so much
This was so intense and amazing. And god damn I learned A LOT, like i knew Jeff Bazos was a crooked dude with waay too much damn money but so much that it would take you 5,550 years to count that shit? This world is so crooked
Yeah I did the maths at one point. If you have 1billion at birth (no interest, no other income), and spend 10 thousand a day (a pretty lavish lifestyle by any standard) every day of your life, it'd take 250-300 years to run out of money. Human brains aren't equipped to comprehend how big a billion is, let alone 180-odd billion.
bro i can count my bank account cent by cent and it'd only take me 16 minutes, bezos' wealth, and every single other god damn insidious rich person's wealth, is fucking insane
I think they might have an issue with the sheer volume of copyrighted material I use. My justification for it is that I'm not monetizing the channel, but that probably doesn't matter in the real world. Also, well done on spotting the font. I keep scanning for new fonts I like, and then go "Oooh what's this one" and its always EB Garamond. I guess that's my font now.
@@TheNarcissistCookbook (im a graphic designer and I 10000% approve of Garamond) man. I'd maybe try and replace anything copyrighted with some CC stuff. this is truly a great work. deserving of actual film fest kinda showing. fuck dude if you need help with graphics, motion graphics or editing I'd actually be down to help pro bono. can't understate how great this is. i'm a jaded fuck and I was genuinely moved.
This video reminded me why I stopped buying oreos for a long time, and now the pack sitting on my shelf is making me feel guilty. I think we use less palm oil where I live, and I try to avoid it where I can, but consumers shouldn't need to read through every ingredient and know all the food additive codes to choose what to buy. This is why we need governments to step up and make laws for big corporations that have actual concequences. Billionare shareholders will never prioritise the planet or human lives over profits unless we make them.
Wow, this so perfectly captures my own feelings of rage, sadness, and frustration, especially over the past year. So wonderfully and powerfully put! Thank you!
this is one of the most important videos on the internet and i love it so much and have for 3 years and no matter how hard i beg i can't seem to convince people to listen. no fault of yours or mine probably, just... fucking palm oil ya know? it's frightening that nobody, even friends want to listen to a person point out how absolutely messed up the world is.
heard this for the first time today on a random spotify mix while driving a van delivering pointless bullshit packages for amazon so I can get enough overtime in this week to pay for the yearly increase in my rent. thanks for articulating that feeling over cathartic guitar chords is my point, I guess.
It took me a month to get my internet back but boy am I glad, now I can binge this until I’ve memorized it by heart just like “Absolute State Of The Union”
you know, i come back to this work a lot nowadays. it gives me hope. hope for our future. its hard not to succumb to the nihilism of my generation, and god do i get it, things are so bad that i cant even begin to describe it. and because of this the majority of people my age i encounter dont plan for their future. they dont expect to have one. but thigs like this, for me, are evidence that there still is something out there thats worth fighting for. something like this that can remind me of the good in our world, that is still waiting to be discovered, because this, is so beyond valuable. so, thank you, so much for making this, it means so much to me, and people like me than you might think. thank you
as TNC says here, humanity is fundamentally good at its root. as a species, we will always have flaws, but I believe we will always keep fighting to create beauty where we can.
been listening for years, i think over 5 years, because i'm mid 20s now and i found you when i was just turning an adult i think. i saw myself in a lot of your songs, and as i grow and learn even in my 20s, i find something more to love and learn, i listen to a song that caught my eye this time that didn't before, who knows why, and i fall further in love with your art. also bug hunter and cookbook tour!? you're two artists i found independently of each other and i never could have imagined you'd tour together - that you even knew each other. incredible. i'm determined to be in Manchester to see the two of you perform live.
Matt, you are a man and a stoic with stories to tell that embody all that is human. I thank God you are one of the few so endowed with the skill and grace to do so. I only wish more could hear your beautiful hymns that capture humanity so well. Never stop.
I've been so excited for this quite a while I was not disappointed- this is amazing! I absolutely love all your music and this one is just as good if not better than the rest of your incredible creations.
Cognitive dissonance blues... Here it is! 💛 Another brilliant story, I love that you keep pulling away the facades of the bigger picture with your recent stuff🙌🏻
It is also used to organize mass protests. And unions. And inform about misconduct. And cancel people. It's not about getting rid of the internet completely, it's about getting rid of anything but the parts that keep us quiet. Only mindnumbing content is the goal.
I would have preferred a mention of the velvet underground in 1967 rather than mid 90's green day (I'm literally clutching at straws here) excellent, truly. cap doffed. Lets hope this inspires change. You did beyond good here.
This is the kind of stuff that gives me hope for humanity. Being able to recognize this, turn it into art, and also not leave out that the human race at it's core is fundamentally good. 💜 For who ever needs to read this. I do not know you, but I love you. Hang in there.
Was the “when we mighty look upon our works” a nod to the poem ozzymandias? Cause if so you just solidified your position as my favourite artist for the next twenty years
Cried watching this. I'm so tired of it all to. Tired of feeling like my only worth is to consume consume consume. So much greed in this world. And once you wake up to this, you can never really go back.
Im sure someone has said this already, but I really like the fact you put the stock cubes back. Perhaps we can barely do anything, but damnit, its still something
I say this genuinely and unironically but you are my single favorite artist ever. Please keep up the good work, man! I listen to your stuff on a daily basis and I make no plan on stopping anytime soon.
I need you to read academic articles/audiobooks! how you deliver lines is just so engaging! I absolutely love the mix of styles in all of your tracks!!!
The splendid poet Jenni Pascoe turned me on to your stuff the other day by sending me a link to "Courtney". I found it a bit to ranty for my tastes but liked it enough to go looking for other stuff. Everything I found so far is a bit too ranty for my tastes. Then I stumbled on this. This is a bit too ranty for my tastes: but - oh my fucking god - if it isn't just fucking perfect. It's everything I've been grappling with as well for the last 30 years, stated clearly and concisely, (yup - given the breadth and depth of content - 9'24" is concise,) and I also love the tune. The title is perfect too, (and I'm annoyed I didn't think of it first.) So it's not too ranty for my tastes. Well, it is: but rightly so. Ths is the dog's bollocks: it's Joe Strummer over John Lydon; and it's Gordon Gano over Henry Rollins, (I could make other comparisons but this comment is already too long, (even ranty.)) I wish I'd written it. In fact, it's just shot to the top of the list of songs I wish I'd written, (toppling "Arnold My Frog" from first place and knocking "I Will Survive" out of the top three.)
absolutely, the target audience for my music is 'people who like the sound of my voice almost as much as I do'. I'm glad this track resonated with you though 💜 maybe allow yourself to rant more, see what comes out!
